ossible. >> reporter: we're coming to you live from the fireline here in sonoma county. take a look. this is where a fire continues to burn. hundreds of acres on fire right now. we'll talk live with assistant fire chief of sonoma county to tell you what's happening next in their fight. "mornings on 2" starts now.

well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's wednesday, may 1st. we begin with a weather alert as a red flag warning is in alert for multiple parts of the bay area. right now, the hot weather and high winds are fueling four separate fires in napa and sonoma counties. this is video of one fire burning in napa near the silverado trail and right now, none of the fires are under control. we have live team coverage. tara moriarty is live in the east bay where fire stations are in alert. steve paulson is in the weather center. first, let's go to claudine wong in knights valley, where firefighters are trying to get control of three fires. claudine? >> reporter: they are all in this direct area from where we're standing. you can see fire burning right now. we're along the fireline, just

over the ridge. they are trying to create a fireline with bulldozers and rocky and goes down into a drainage area. they are trying to get in front of it. i want to take you live now to the assistant fire chief of sonoma county. do you have any idea how things are going? certainly, it's been a long morning for you guys. >> fires are pretty much in a containment mode now. the first two fires are the one that you -- the one you are at right now is the largest. it has isolated pockets that we're having trouble getting to. >> reporter: behind us, we can see the smoke coming from there. that's the second one. tell me about that one. >> that one -- we had two fires. one that involved a structure and this fire that you are looking at right now, it just started for no apparent reason. there it was. >> reporter: you've got gusty winds. i know we talked about calfire gearing up for the season but they didn't have everything scheduled to get into place.

tell me about the challenges. >> calfire, they have three dozers here. they had to put their equipment up from a distance. they were not set up for the fire season. but they -- they are in charge of the fire. it's a state responsibility area. so they have a good amount of overhead an personnel here. >> reporter: and we expect to see the aircraft coming up and that's when we'll get a real idea of what you are dealing with. >> right. the incident commander is getting on the ship right now. he's gonna fly all of the areas to get an idea of what the area looks like and how much overhaul will be involved. >> reporter: thank you for the update. he's making his way up the road to get a better idea of this fire. again, you take a look at this area here. we know bulldozers are the other side where we're standing. to give you a look at some of the area, though, you can see the vineyards here. these are kendall jackson

grapes and vines. there are some on the other end of the ridge. we'll keep an eye on this on "mornings on 2." live in knights valley, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> claudine, it looks like a lot of smoke. it looks like we lost claudine. we'll get back to her. the fire danger is high in contra costa county. relief will come for those in brentwood. 7:04. debate over immigration reform takes center stage nationwide today. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live from san jose to talk about may day rallies and why they are especially significant this year. janine? >> reporter: dave, we're here. >> east san jose in a -- here's here in east san jose in a shopping center. this is where parking lot was full of people. there was a large may day back

in 2006. the crowds are not expected to be as large this year but it will still be significant. now, here you can see just how massive the crowds were seven years ago in san jose, as all of these immigrant advocates and immigrants called for action. immigrants and advocates will be marching and holding a rally calling for immigration reform. for the past couple of months, various immigration groups have been writing to congress and lobbying them. there is a sense of arisengy. because two weeks ago, a group of bipartisan senators introduced a bill that strengthens border security, allows for high and low-skilled workers in the country and it will allow sit accidentship for the 11 miami -- citizenship for the 11 million living here. >> we need them here. they need to make a life for themselves. that's the way i feel about it.

>> reporter: recent stats show, 5 million in the u.s. have one undocumented parent. but 80% are citizens. this bill would allow deported parents to return to the u.s. and enter the applicable way to citizenship. the bill doubles the number of these. now, there will be a march held today at 4:30. they are at our lady of guadalupe church. in the next hour, we'll bring you reaction of some of the people we're talking to, if they think the march will make a difference or if they care. back to you. >> last night we caught up with oakland immigrant rights groups making their signs for their march today. the march begins at 3:00 this afternoon at the fruitvale

b.a.r.t. station. last year on may day, a separate protest in downtown oakland led to violence and damage. you are looking at video of the protesters clashing with oakland police. oakland police say they've heard a protest is planned today in oakland as well. police say they've relayed that information to business owners and that officers will be out in force. city officials are urging businesses don't close but be prepared in case something does happen. big immigration reform rallies are scheduled all over the country today. this comes as congress continues working on new immigration reform legislation. coming up for you at 7:15. the new issue that has democrats and republicans at a standoff. 7:07. we want to check in with sal. more trouble in the north bay, sal? >> yeah, highway 37 pam and dave. we've been talking about it all morning long. 37 still, they have the lanes blocked near 121 because of a truck accident. the vehicles are gone. but there was a bunch of debris

and also fuel in the roadway. they are waiting for caltrans to pick that up. if you are leaving from vallejo to novato, you need to give yourself extra time and think of an alternate route especially if you are only going a short distance. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic here is backed up for about a 25-minute delay. no major problems on the bridge itself getting into the city. we're also looking at the south bay which is has recovered. we had a couple of earlier problems. now things are kind of normal. you see westbound 237, it's slow here at zanker road. 7:08. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. there's a lot going on. some locations have hardly any breeze. i think it's already peaked. higher elevation has surged. fog is moving up the coast. i mean it's started around santa cruz. now it's about halfway up the coast. red flag warning advisory. warm to hot for most but i already dropped temperatures on

the coast. it's not happening. red flag warning above 1,000 feet until 6:00 tonight. low humidity all the way up into lake county. calm conditions up in men deso knee county. win -- mendocino county. windy up in the hills, yes. mount deeing a blow, 68 -- mt. diablo, 68. it's pretty windy around port chicago, pittsburg, brentwood, antioch and high pressure is here but it's not blasting out the fog. mid-60s for others. 54 novato. 58 napa. napa is the -- the wind has tailed off considerably. there's some of that fog moving up the coast. not down the coast. up the coast of. with that in place -- coat e with that in place, the coast

will not get into a warmer pattern. minneapolis, the dakotas, it's turning to snow here and it's snowing in denver again. incredible snow. two weeks from now, they will probably have tornado warnings. 43 ukiah, 41 tahoe. 60 sacramento. 45 monterey. already 70 in palm springs. very foggy along the coast in southern california. it will be sunny for most except the fog moving up the santa cruz coast. moving up to san mateo. i would think it would hit the brakes here. it's still there, 60s, 70s, and 80s. all of -- all of these temperatures are dependent on the wind. if it does, it will be very mild to warm. i saw a 10-degree difference. it was a really tough call. it was look warm to hot and then a big cooldown. a judge has ruled two young daughters of a suspected prostitute have a valid claim to the eskate of a -- eskate of

a million -- estate of a millionaire. the judge says there's clear evidence that the daughters are the father of kumra and are entitled to some of his money. investigators say his death happened when suspected gang members with alleged ties to some of his rather prostitute girlfriends broke into his home, bound and gagged him and ransackled the house. 7:11. that is that -- that is that red line been crossed? the big step the obama administration is considering to get involved in the syrian civil war. a big show of support for jason collins and the special significance of the number on his jersey this past season.

but the wind has kind of collapsed for many at the surface. anywhere from 60 to 90 on the highs today. >> thank you, steve. there have been plenty of overnight power problems in the bay area on this very windy morning. one of the biggest trouble spots is in the pleasanton area. nearly 6,000 homes and businesses have been without electricity for several hours. there's still no word on when the power will be restored. there are new reports that the u.s. is preparing to send weapons to syrian rebels. top obama administration officials quoted in the washington post say the administration is moving to send weapons to the syrian opposition while at the same time pursuing a political solution to the conflict. the officials say president obama will probably make a final decision on giving weapons to the opposition within weeks. 7:14. immigration reform is hitting a roadblock on capitol hill one week before the debate starts in congress. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom,

senators can't agree when it comes to same-sex couples and citizenship? >> reporter: dave, california dianne feinstein sponsors the act that would change the federal government's definition of only being between a man and a woman. republicans vow to fight this. republicans who cowrote the bill say the gop already gave on the pass to citizenship. if democrats push for same-sex couple, immigration reform could die before it goes to a vote. congress is in recess but hearings on immigration take center stage next weck. what's expected in the days -- next week. what's aexpected in the days --

waters plans to open both the cafe and restaurant on june 10th. 7:18. a new study is raising health concerns about eating ground turkey. consumer reports tested ground turkey from stores in 21 states. mort than half of the 257 samples were contam plated -- contaminated with fecal bacteria. that can cause food poisoning and infect fictions. but a -- infections. but a spokesperson for the group calls this alarmist saying it was based on a small sample size. a jury will soon decide if the lawrence lab should pay five former workers at least $6 million each. the workers say they were singled out because of their age. the lab blamed those job cuts on the recession and a change in defense policy away from

in southern california a construction worker is recovering this morning after spending more than an hour trapped under slabs of granite. the incident happened yesterday afternoon in fontana. the 20-year-old workering erg was unloading a shipping container when the granite came crashing down on top of his legs. cal/osha is now investigating the incident.

7:23. now we're hearing from family members of seven americans killed in a cargo plane crash in afghanistan. it happened monday shortly after the plane took off from the air base. watch this. we're not shing showing the crack. >> brad, the pilot, was a wonderful family man. we love him very much. the family is very saddened. >> that 747 was on its way to dubai. it's possible the cargo on board shifted causing the crash. 77:24. we want -- 7:24. we want to check in on the roads with sal. >> we had the earlier crash on northbound 17. traffic there was busy. some people may have been using 280 as an alternate. 17 is better than it was.

280 is still pretty slow getting up to highway 17 as it normally is. bay bridge toll plaza still backed up for a steady 25 to 30- minute delay. it does seem to be improving a little bit with no major problems. no problems on 24 between walnut creek and oakland. i want to mention highway 37. they still have this crash and the traffic is just awful leaving vallejo for novato. if you want to use the richmond bridge for an alternate, that would be much better as they are looking to clean up spimed fuel from an earlier accident -- spilled fuel from an earlier accident. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. we have continuing fog. half moon bay, montera. red flag warning continues above 1,000 feet until 6:00. i think the strongest gust peaked overnight. wind advisory until 11k --

are under control. we'll go live to sonoma county where three fires have burned more than a hundred acres. >> reporter: high winds fuel a red flag warning. we'll tell you where it is in effect today. and we'll tell you how the reopening of one fire station has may -- may have helped things when "mornings on 2" continues. look at them kids. [ sigh ] they have no idea what it was like before u-verse high speedt. yeah, uldn't just stream movies to a device like that. one time, i had to wait half a day to watch a movie. you watched movies?! i was lucky if i could watch a show. show?! man, i was happy to see a sneezing panda clip!

right now, four wildfires are burning in the north bay. this is video of one of them that's at 50 acres burning in napa just outside of yountville. high winds and a lack of resources is creating a challenge for calfire. we have team coverage of the weather fueling these flames. steve pawlson is in the weather area. tara moriarty is in the east bay where red flag warnings are in effect. let's go to claudine wong first in knights valley in sonoma county where a helicopter is in the area. i tried to ask you earlier about the conditions out there. is it kind of hard to breathe with all of the smoke? >> reporter: it's more hard to see. the wind shifts. it gets in your eyes. it's a burning sensation. we're lucky ray now. it's died down for a moment -- right now. it's died down for a moment. what you are looking at, one

part of this bigger fire that's 200 acres now being called the why low fire. i just talked to calfire. so i have new information. they are saying this fire 0% contained right now. they have dozers around it. they've got the chopper in the air. they are hoping to be able to map out a better plan. but with 0% containment, they can't tell us when they think they will get ahead of it. i want to show you the other part. these are kendall jackson vineyards. you can see the smoke blowing up there. that's the other part of the yellow fire. that's burning that ridge there. they have crews trying to get in there as well. there was a third fire there that they know was caused by a fallen tree that fell onto power lines, damaged part of a home. that fire is out and contained. but these are the three fires they've been working all morning long in knights valley in sonoma county. you hear from the sonoma county fire chief.

we talked about some of the challenges they are facing. he certainly says this is going to be a long morning. >> it's drying out the fuels right now. the wind does not help. the fact that we had just a big wind event was pretty unusual. and no one was really talking about that yesterday. when you get the heat and the wind that's difficult. >> reporter: they came out here to knights valley for the first fire, the oak tree caused a down power line. started a little bit of a house fire. they got control of that. then they had other fire burning, a short distance away, the one we're looking at and you had another fire that showed they are connected to the same fire. yellow fire, 0% containment. they have several resources, they have 15 bulldozers, 15 engines. 16-person hand crews doing work out here, just trying to put

out the hot spots and make sure this doesn't spread further. it will be a long day. they will be out here most of the day. we're hoping to get a report from the chopper to give us a better idea of what they are dealing with. live in sonoma county, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:32. at the same time, crews are working to get ahead of another fire burning in napa near the silverado trail. it's burned 50 acres and is 40% contained. coming up at 7:45, pam cook will have more on this fire includes the latest information from calfire. just in time, a fire station is opening up in contra costa county. tara moriarty is live at fire station 54 in brentwood. it's been closed for almost a year, tara. >> reporter: yeah, it's pretty coincidental it will be reopeningen a red -- reopening on a fled flag warning day. now it gets a second chance.

these crews may not have a chance to sit down today. high winds and low relative humidity have created wipe conditions for the -- ripe conditions for the fire. the warning will be extended until 6:00 tonight. firefighters at station 54 in brentwood will be back in business at about 8:00 this morning, thanks to a two-year federal grant. specifically, there is a higher risk for fire danger and more potential for larger fires in parts of alameda and contra costa counties above 1,000 feet. >> we have four crews on with a total of 12 firefighters and we'll have at 8 -- at 8:00 this morning, we'll increase that by 20% and have five stationed opened. >> reporter: you will meet all of those -- you are gonna need all of those people? >> we very well could. >> reporter: fire officials say it's unusual, of course, because fire season really has

not started. this is the first time they've seen something like this so early. two ways you can protect yourself, cut and clear dry vegetation from your home and completely douse barbecue fires when you are done. we're gonna stick around here until 8:00. the mayor is supposed to be here and the fire chiefs. we'll keep you posted. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. investigators in calaveras county are trying to determine if the man accused of kidnapping a toddler also killed 8-year-old leila fouler. placerville police arrested 42- year-old jason wryrynen yesterday morning. officers say he broke into a home and tried to grab a 15- month-old girl. but the child tale mother was able to fight off the intruder until police arrived. this all happened in front. mother's other children. >> we ran in the room. >> you hid in the room? >> yes. i push the door. >> so you pushed the door

closed? >> yeah. >> reporter: calaveras county sherr had is say this kidnapping -- sheriffs say this kidnapping does not appear to be connected to the leila fowler murder. however they've taken a dna sample from the suspect. mourners tied purple and pink ribbons, her favorite colors, to a school fence at the candlelight vigil last night at jenny lind school. they are grateful for the comfort. >> i just want to thank the entire community and all of our family and friends for the overwhelming amount of support that you've given my family. it will never be forgotten. >> leila was stabbed to death last saturday. sheriff's deputies say there were no signs of a robbery or burglary. 7:36. reports of that attempted kidnapping in placerville sounds a lot like the kidnapping in pittsburg. that's whennage man grabbed a 2-

expected to be built. it's just a matter of when. there are reports of the bridge's safety, fund-raising and possible conflicts of interest. some state legislators are alarmed because they say it defeats the transparency process and gives caltrans better chances for getting approvals. one senator is surprised and says there's no sense in paying 100,000 grand to approve things that caltrans has done. funding has been put on hold. the reason, faulty bolts. they are put behind the decision of closing the bay bridge. today akronicle says the --

today's chronic says the fund- raising for the funds has been put on hold. as we take it back out here live, officials hope to raise at least $3.5 million for the festivities for the opening of the bay bridge. we're live here in treasure island. i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:39. let's bring sal back. this has been a very busy commute, sal. >> fortunately, it's settled down a little dave and tori. >> yeah. >> finally. we had kind of a busy start to be sure. let's take a look at some of these commutes. 80 westbound is moderately heavy, heading out to the macarthur maze. you will see slow traffic on 580 as you come from the lakeshore curve. other than that, it's not out of the ordinary. when up get over to the bay bridge toll plaza, it's backed up for about a 20-minute delay.

we're looking at the nimitz freeway between 238 and union city. we have a little bit of slow traffic and also some slow traffic approach egg the toll plaza. let's go to -- approaching the toll plaza. there can be a ten-degree difference in areas that are not that far apart today. the fog is halfway up the san mateo coast. you would have thought by now, it would get blown out. for some, it will be a cool, cold, foggy day. you don't have to worry about any high or mid-level clouds. they will out of the picture. wind advisory goes until 11:00. warm to hot for most, for most. generally above a thousand feet. all morning long we've been watching claudine sea report. her hair has been going in the wind or nothing at all. there's still gusts of 74 at

mt. diablo. anywhere from 50s 60s to almost 70. san jose airport, 62. san jose state's meteorology department is 68 degrees. oakland downtown, 57. the airport is 65. big difference in those temperatures. a whopper of a system in the rockies producing snow. it was 70 degrees in boulder yesterday. it's snowing this morning. that's spring time in the rockies. a week from now, they will probably have severe weather. but fog near santa cruz coast and part, of the santa cruz coast. well-above average temperatures. if you are not on the coast. 60s to 90s. just incredible and, you think this is hard to forecast? it's not. if that north wind turns westerly, all bets are off. breezy, warm to hot. certainly thursday into friday. it looks like a significant cooldown over the weekend. 19 minutes before 8:00. the warriors hope to wrap up their playoff series now tomorrow in oakland.

but some are wondering if the nuggets played dirty in their win last night, taking one player in particular. we'll -- particularly one player in particular. we'll talk to fred ingles next. and reports indicate the labor market may not be as strong as previousably shout. -- previously thought.

7:44. we continue now our coverage of developing news. wildfires fueled by high winds. pam cook is in our newsroom with an update on one fire that's burning right now in napa. good morning, pam. >> good morning. we just spoke with calfire a few minutes ago. that fire has now burned 75 acres. but the good news, it's 60% contained. they expect full containment by

noon. now, the fire is near the -- a vineyard right outside of yountville in the area of the silverado trail and oakville cross road, not clear which vineyard this is near but the vines are not threatened. no homes were threatened either in the fire. calfire says it's a grass fire. you can see, though, our news crew got this video at 1:00 a.m. you can see it's pretty big. they were right there at the scene at 4:30. we understand the winds at the napa airport came in at about 44 miles an hour early this morning. but the wind isn't the only thing firefighters are dealing with. >> they had some access issues. it is a fairly steep terrain and obviously the high winds are a big challenge for us right now. >> now, at this point, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. it is near a road, though. we're getting reports this

morning that people around sonoma and marin counties are smelling smoke. called a couple of fire departments in central marin a moment ago. so far they are not getting any calls. if you are smelling any smoke in the area near you. send me a tweet. i would like to know how the effects of these fires are. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. u.s. factory activity expanded at a slower pace in april compared with march as manufactures pulled back sharply on hiring and cut their stockpiles. the dow currently down 57. the nasdaq is down 13. s&p down 6. also influencing investors today, the federal reserve wraps up it's two day policy meeting today. and feted chief berbernanke -- and fed chief ben bernanke will hold a news conference at about

11:00 our time. they could start to strange its strategy has inflation stays low. and there's reports that the labor market may not be as strong as thought. adp said 119,000 private sector conditions were created in april. that's considerably fewer than what was expected. this will give an insight into the federal jobs on friday. it includes both private and public jobs and federal spending cuts may have eliminated some government jobs. returning now to the nba playoffs. tomorrow night the warriors will be back in oakland playing the denver nuggets at home. that follows a rough night last night for the warriors in denver in more ways than one. ktvu sport's reporter fred inglis joins us from snowy denver. i understand it's snowing there

welcome back. we are still following developing news. a red flag warning is in effect for parts of the bay area. the heat, the high winds, triggering several fires in napa, sonoma county. this is video of a fire in napa burning near the silverado trail. right now, it's 60% contained. we have team coverage for you. ktvu's tara moriarty is in the east bay where firefighters were on alert. of course, steve paulson is in our weather center monitoring the strong winds all over the bay area. but first, let's go to ktvu's claudine wong in the knights valley area in sonoma county. those firefighters are really trying to get control of a fire that's 0% contained. claudine? >> reporter: that's right, dave. 0% containment.

they are just trying to get around it, get a handle on it. this area has been smoldering and burning all morning line and really we're told over this hill and down there is kind of a drainage type area and that's where the bulldozers are really trying to create a fireline to make sure this fire doesn't stretch any further than where we are. i can hear the chopper. i know it's above. we've seen it flying back and forth. they've been fighting this all morning long. in the dark it's been hard to determine how widespread it is because the terrain is very buried. if we can walk you over in this area here so we can show you the over the ridge, the other part of this fire, both of these fires considered the yellow fire. but they are in two different locations. they are not really sure how they started. ther was a fire, a -- there was a fire, a third one, where an oak tree fell on power lines. they are not sure if that's how this tread.

these are kendall jackson grapes. if you pan up the road, all the way up that road stretches up to what's called yellow jacket ranch a 1500-acre ranch at the top of the hill. the fire is burning right in between. we just talked to the caretaker of the yellow jacket ranch and he talked about keeping this off the land. >> i got my water truck going. i started to get around the property. it's been so wind why i. like 80-mile-an-hour winds. >> you had no idea until called you? >> no. and then i was like what? and then i got up. >> reporter: he's going right up to his land and he's gonna try to make sure it doesn't spread. calfire and local agencies trying to do the same thing. we're hoping to get a new report from calfire very shortly about what their chopper is seeing in terms of how many acres. we're told when the chopper goes up. a lot of the numbers can change as they get a full mapping of the area and that's affected.

this is a charred area right in front of us. this area again has been burning most of the morning. they came out here a short time ago and put some water on it to try to dampen the fire. there have been times where we thought we might need to move but it dies down again. still, this is gonna be the situation they say all morning long and throughout the day. small fires popping up as they try to get around this and find some sort of containment. live in sonoma county, ktvu channel 2 news, claudine wong. may day rallies are planned around the country today to call for immigration reform. ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose and has been talking to people about today's planned day of action. good morning, claudine -- sorry, tara. that midas was about imgreat lakes reform. not everyone was -- that may day was about immigration reform. not everyone wasle comfortable talking about it -- was comfortable talking about it. immigrants say numbers are held by strength. they are targeting specific lawmakers. it's especially significant because there's a bill written wipe four democrats and four republicans calls for strengthening border security allowing thousands of skilled workers in the country and providing a path to -- to citizenship for the 11 million living here illegally. there is strong hope for the bill because it is winning some republican support. >> because i think everybody deserves a fair shot, you know, at the american dream. that's why we all came here. i came here for that reason and i made it. so why not everybody else? >> reporter: various churches

and immigrant rights groups will be holding rallies in the south bay. a large march begins around 4:30 at our lady of guadalupe church. that crowd will march on to city hall for a rally that's supposed to be held at 5:30 this afternoon. we will bring you all of that on our later evening newscast. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:05. we caught up with an oakland immigrants rights group last night making signs for their march today. the oakland march starts at 3:00 this afternoon at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. last year on may day, a separate protest in downtown oakland resulted in some violence and damage. this is video of protesters clashing with police. oakland police say they've heard of plans for a protest downtown. police say they have shared what they know with business owners and officers will be out in force. city officials are urging

businesses not to close but to be prepared in case something does happen. 8:05. new this morning, may day marches turn violent overseas in turkey. here's new video in. protesters clash with police this morning. police dae claired the main -- declared the main square in istanbul off limits. they smashed through barricades and the police responded with tear gas and water cannons. now we're told the entire city of istanbul is shut down. buses and ferry service into the city have all been suspended. back here in the bay area, sentencing it scheduled today for the man accused of throwing things at police during a may day protest a year ago. you remember this, 34-year-old jessie netbit is expected to get a two-year sentence.

he was videoed throwing pipes and bricks off a building. no one on the ground was hurt. a car slammed into the interstate 880 underpass in san low ren so. sal -- san low ren so -- san lorenzo. sal's been following this. other drivers on the road first called the chp, told them about a reckless driver going northbounded on hesperian. police found a white toyota corolla crashed in the underpass. the driver was trapped in the wreckage and had to be rescued. he's was rushed to eden medical center. no word on his condition. we want to check in with sal. he's keeping a close eye on contra costa county. >> that's right. we have traffic that's still slow on highway 4. from baypoint over the hill to concord. if you are in -- if you are in

4:00 this morning. pg&e is blaming the equipment failure possibly due to those winds. no word when the power will be back on. we have new information on the boston marathon bombings. the fbi is investigating several persons of interest in the boston area who may have had direct contact with the two suspects in the months before the bombings. agents also want to talk to two suspected russian militants believed to have come in contact with tamerlan tsarnaev during his seven-month trip to russia in 2011. in the meantime, today's boston herald reports the two suspects and their parents benefited from more than $100,000 in tax payer assistance. that includes cash, food stamps, and government help to pay for their housing. also the father of the boston bombing suspects says he's indefinitely put off returning to the u.s. because he's too sick to make the trip from russia. he says he's suffering from bad

county the right now, calfire is trying to control two fires burning at least 200 acres near highway 128 in knights valley in sonoma county. these fires are 0% contained. they make up what's being referred to as the yellow fire. this fire near napa is bumping near the silverado trail. it started before midnight. it's 60% contained. it's burned 75 acres. it's 8:16. just this morning, the white house sent out a notice that president obama will make a "personnel announcement" at 11:15 this morning. that's white house speak for another nomination for president obama's-term admin stration. here are the three -- administration. here are the three possibilities --

senators are on recess this week but the topic of immigration reform is not. as kyla campbell reports, the debate centers on how same-sex couples are affected by the immigration bill. kyla? >> reporter: california senators feinstein and barbara bockers and other democrats -- bockers and other -- boxer and other democrats are disappointed by this reform bill. it does not include any provisions for same-sex partners. the plan introduced a couple of weeks ago, aims to make illegal immigration easier for highly- skilled immigrants, migrant farm workers and those living in the u.s. illegally. but in the bill, there's no mention of helping foreign and same-sex partners of u.s. citizens become legal, permanent residents. democrats want to offer an amendment to the gang of 8's proposal to give green cards. republicans who co-wrote the bill made it clear early on -- members of their party would not support that sort of

provision. they say it was difficult enough to get gop support for a pass to citizenship. immigration reform will come up for debate next week with the judiciary committee hearing. even if it comes up with a vote and passes through the senate, it will still have to get through the republican- controlled house. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning, a 7-year-old girl from dublin is listed in critical condition after falling out of a third-ner window last night at 7:30. police stay the girl was out the window talking to kids below when she leaned into the screen and fell out. she was rushed to the hospital and continues to be treated for life-threatening injuries. police in union city investigating racist graffiti as a hate crime. the restaurant toppers 2 and fill low pea knows for justice

the red frag warning covering -- flag warning covering parts of the bay area. the high wind, heat, fueling flames like this, burning at least 200 acres in sonoma county. it's 0% contained. now, that fire is made up of several smaller fires. it's burning near highway 128. we're bringing you live pictures right now. we're panning up because helicopters are coming in. water-dropping helicopters are just starting to fly over the area. the area that claudine wong is at right now. the camera is panning around. claw dean is gonna give you a live update.

we're watching for the choppers coming in. there's another fire burning in napa near the silverado trail. that particular fire is 60% contained. we're all over this. we're continuing our team coverage on today's red flag warning. tara moriarty, live in contra costa county, she's standing by. but first, let's go to meteorologist steve paulson. he is checking everyone and this is a -- quite a forecast, steve. >> we'll focus mainly on the north bay and east bay, that's where the red flag warning continues until 6:00 tonight. the wind gusts seems to have tailed off a little bit. the red flag warning, generally above 1,000 feet. you are seeing humidity anywhere from 10% to 24%. not only is the ground -- the fuel level is extremely high. humidity is low. temperatures within in the -- latino in the 80s and 90s. the wind advisory goes until 11:00. not everyone is in on this. speaking of the breeze, i believe tara moriarty is out in

brentwood. i know it's been breezy to windy out there. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, the doors -- you can see the wind just picked up as you were saying that, steve. we've seen gusts up to 40 miles an hour overnight in brentwood. right now, very important moment here for fire station 54, the doors just opened. the engines and 54 had shut down last summer because of dwindling revenues from property taxes. now it gets a temporarily second chance and crews are already kirking into high gear. >> reporter: firefighters load the gear into the rig this morning. high wind and low relative humidity kicked in last night at 6:00 creates these ripe conditions for fire. the warning as steve mentioned will extend until 6:00 tonight. firefighters at 54 in brentwood now back in business thanks to a two-year federal grant. specifically there's a higher

risk for fire danger and more potential for larger fires in parts of alameda and contra costa counties above 1,000 feet. we spoke to the mayor. he said this is perfect timing because of this red flag warning and today these crews going to be very alert. we hope it's not a record- setting time but opening today. obviously, very coincidental and appropriate. firefighters say it's official. the season has not started. this is the first time they can remember a red flag warning in may. two ways to protect yourself, cut and clear dry veg takes from your -- vegetation from your house and completely douse barbecue fires when you are done. and there was a call that came in to pittsburg just a couple of minutes ago. they are just sort of standing by and waiting and they are very anxious and sort of excited that they get to be back on the job. we're live in brentwood, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:33. a san francisco man is being

treated for life-threatening injuries after a violent confrontation in a fast-food parking lot. this happened monday at the mcdonald's on third street. police say the 74-year-old victim was punched by a younger man man after a fender-bender. the victim was punched in the head. >> you respect elders and don't do that. i don't know what's wrong with the youngsters today. but that's a bad thing. >> the suspect is described as 25 years old, 224 pound with dreadlocks. he was wearing a gray knit cap, black sunglasses, a black t- shirt and blue jeans. he drove away in a dark two- door sedan. investigators in marin county are checking to see if a car-jacking suspect arrested in greenbrae is connected to a homicide in oregon. 30-year-old jeffrey boise is currently being held without bail in the marin county jail. he's accused of carjacking a man in rohnert park yesterday

and then trying to carjack a woman in greenbrae. >> he was coming up on me. i thought he's gonna knock on the window. instead, he pulled out a gun and told me to get over to the passenger seat. >> the victim talked to the suspect for 15 minutes trying to make a connection and calm him down. she was payable to get someone's attention who called for help. boise ran when he heard police sirens. officers say they later caught him trying to break into a nearby home. police say boise had more than 200 pound of ammunition and a loaded rifle in a car. a carjacking victim says boise told her he had already killed someone and now police in oregon want to question boise about the homicide of a woman found dead on sunday. the woman accused of a poisoning attempt at a san jose starbucks is being held without bail this morning. now, police arrested. ramineh behbehanian at her home in home in san jose monday night. the news says she's a chemist

raising has stopped. there's possible conflicts of interest. the bee has not covered the experts that were asked to review this. this will give caltrans projects a better chance of giving green lights for approvals. a state senator was quoted as saying he was surprised and there was no sense someone paying 100,000 to summarily approve something already done. meantime, funding for the bay bridge has been put on hold. the reason, the concern over faulty bolts. they are reportedly behind the decision loved in the plan for the celebration when opening the bridge. the fund-raising for that has been put on hold at least for now. caltrans is still running safeties tests on.

on the span. traffic in san jose has improved a little bit on 280 northbound. still pretty busy coming up to highway 17. at 8:38, here's steve. gabriella asked if it was okay to go to baker beach. there's a 16-degree difference in san francisco. big difference in just the city alone and occasionally you're getting this northeast wind yet fog continues to come up the coast, taking the turn. it's very shallow. it's taking the turn, past montera. it's down here. you go a block or two away and it's sunny. fog is not disappearing on the coast. it that makes it -- that makes it difficult. if you are marin or sonoma fine -- you are fine. for others, windy and very, very warm. there's temperatures coming in at here at 8:00 at 70 degrees. the wind seems to tail off for most but it's still there.

very, very low humidity. 10 to 25% for some. the wind advisory goes until 11:00. it seems like things e decreasing at the surface. it's a north-northeast wind and that means that temperatures are mild. i'm saying strange, crazy weather. wind advisory, red flag, high fire danger and foggy and cold along the coastline. some areas may not get out of the upper 50s. had really cold lows on the coast. low 40s. amazing for may 1st. other areas are in the 70s. 50 half moon bay bay. i went -- half moon bay there's the fog continuing to work its way off the coast. there's plenty there. it will not be a very warm day in santa cruz and it will be a snowy day on the northern plains from minneapolis all the way back into denver and boulder where the snow continues to pile up. and there's a lot there. it will be a snowy day. hope flip you don't have a

we are continuing to follow developing news in the north bay right now a large fire is burning near highway 128 in knights valley. that's in sonoma county. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong is there where calfire, they are now dropping water on the flames.

good morning, claudine. >> reporter: we know there's still fire burning. the last numbers we were -- we had were 200 acres. we're told there's difficult terrain for the firefighters to reach. so certainly they are hoping the chopper can make things better for them. i want to bring in captain head. i know we're still waiting on what the chopper saw when they went up there but trying to get an idea of how big the fire is? >> that's right. they flew the copter to get a better idea of the acre age. we're still waiting on that information. >> reporter: there's the chopper coming back over. tell me what they are kind of dealing with in terms of terrain. >> it's deep terrain. as we head to the southeast. last word was -- >> reporter: last word was 0%

containment. what are the best hopes to get around it? you have bulldozers up there as well? >> we have 15 fire engine, four hand crews, four bulldozers and a helicopter with another one on order. we have additional resources also coming in and with the red flag warnings through 6:00 tonight we're just gonna have to wait and see what the winds bring for us. >> you have the winds and the heat which should make it a very long day for you guys. >> that's true, yes. >> with these north winds that we're getting generally, the temperatures are much higher. we've got lower relative humidities which dry the fuels out quicker and now the increase in wind. >> reporter: does it feel like this caught everyone offguard? this fire season started really early. >> we're definitely prepared for it. we keep track of what the moisture is, we knew they were

low. we planned for this on monday, we augmented our staffing with additional personnel, engines and overhead. so we're tapping into the whole north region. >> okay. thank you for joining us. we appreciate it. certainly. you saw the helicopter making a pass. it's been a steady run to the pond. vineyards down below, we have this area and at the top of thisment that you can't see it -- of this ranch that you can't see, this area stretching to another ridge. they are keeping a close eye on all of it. live in sonoma county, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. the first fire rewere on was overnight in -- we were on was knight in napa. pam cook is in the newsroom with good news. >> we do have good news. we've been getting updates from calfire. they tell us that the fire in napa has burned about 75 acres.

it's 60% contained and firefighters do expect full containment on that fire by noon. it's right outside yountville. we've been trying to find out which winery or grower owns the vineyard. but it's still not clear at this point. now, we do know that the vines are not threatened nor are any homes or buildings out there. take a look at the video. our news crew got this video at 1:00 this morning. >> you can see it started as a pretty big fire. a lot of big trees on fire. this was fueled by high wind overnight. during tower news at 4:30, we got reports that the winds at the napa airport were about 44 miles an hour. we'll check in with steve. the wind is just one thing the firefighters have been dealing with in these grass fires in the wine country. as as we just heard, they are dealing with steep, hilly terrain, a lot of hillsides

without easy access. at this point, the cause of the fire is still under investigation in napa. just wanted to give you an update on some of the smoke. we've gotten a lot of calls in the newsroom overnight and then this morning, i just got a bunch of tweets from people in san francisco. they definitely smelled smoke from this fire all the way into san francisco and one of our viewers is in el sobrante. feeling the effects there as well. we'll have updates throughout the day on the news at noon. back to you. >> thank you. let's bring you up to date on some of the other top stories -- investigators in calaveras county have obtained a dna sample from a manicked a of trying to -- from a man accused of trying to kidnap a girl in placerville. police want to know if he was involved in the stabbing death of leila fowler. on this may day, marches and rallies are planned in the bay area and around the country calling for immigration reform. congress considering immigration reform legislation

supporters are hoping for good turnouts for today's marches. and we have breaking news just in in the boston marathon bombing case. boston police are reporting three more suspects have now been taken into custody. they are being questioned by the fbi. one boston radio station reports those three suspects are due in court later today. still not clear how the suspects are believed to be tied to the bombings. word of the additional suspects comes after authorities said they expanded their investigation and that they were looking at a dozen persons of interest. ten minutes before 9:00. family and friends are raising money to help a boston marathon bombing victim with bay area ties. this is a picture of 29-year- old lisa sherney in the hospital with members. boston red sox who came to visit her. she graduated from san rafael's marin academy high school. she's now attending boston college. she was cheering on at fellow student when the bombs went off. she underwent four surgeries

for shrapnel wound and is now out of the hospital. the martinez boy injured in the boston bombings got his wish. he gets to celebrate his 12th birthday today at home. aaron hern and his parents returned back to the bay area yesterday afternoon. his parents tell us he's recovering well despite his injuries. the next stem is getting aaron back to school. his parents say they will likely work with teachers and counselors to help with the transition. >> there's some steps we have to take before he goes back to school. >> aaron still has 85 staples in his leg and a lot of physical therapy ahead. he will be spending his birthday sat a doctor's office for another checkup. the family plans to hold a press conference tomorrow morning. ktvu has obtained an fbi know toe showing aaron hern a few feet from the bombing suspect. he's on the left-hand side of
