a red flag warning for the bay area and this is one reason why. bay area wildfires are the top story. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell with the threat of high winds and hot weather, firefighters in the north bay battle a grass fire this afternoon. with continuing coverage and new developments of a story we first brought you this morning, ktvu's brian brings us the

report this morning. >> reporter: firefighters have made significant progress. this is the scene of the yellow fire. considering california fire won't be significantly staffed until next week, they've made progress, at least with this fire. cal fire crews are busy with dozers throughout the day. here's where we stand right now. the fire at 2:00 this morning was originally two separate fires but merged into one earlier this morning. so far, it's burned about 125 acres. this is along yellow jacket road. according to cal fire, it's about 50% contained and should be fully contained by sometime

tomorrow morning. cal fire say the winds came relatively early considering it's not fire season just yet. >> we are about two weeks ahead of schedule with the lack of rainfall that we had this winter. our fuels are much drier than normal times of year. so we plan accordingly to bring on additional staffing a little earlier than normal. >> now, the cause of this fire is currently under investigation and no structures have been damaged, at least at this fire. cal fire, again, says this has been a very dry and very dry season so far, but there are a lot of resources being used including two helicopters, fifteen fire engines, four hand crews, and four water tenders. this is one of the crews used about an hour ago. you can see cal fire crews doing maintenance on the helicopter. they also say to expect more crews to come to the fires.

right now, cal fire said there's about three fires in the vicinity. we're live here in so sonoma county, i'm brian flores. back to you. >> in na pa, the fire burned 75 acres along the silverado trail along okay kill. winds were blowing at 44 miles per hour. investigators are looking for the cause of the fire. i was watching brian's live shot and the wind shock behind him getting a workout, so still wind out there, but the good news, it's backing off and the wind advisory has expired across the bay area but fire danger is quite high.

as a result, the red flag warning in place until 6:00 this evening. warm and dry, still northerly winds, especially up above the 1500 at 2,000 feet winds around 20 to a 30 miles per hour. as far as conditions around the fires, as you can see here, a little bit tighter and temperatures probably updated for the 12:00 hour, but these are automatic sensors about the region of fire. temperatures generally right now are in the 70s and the key here, look at the humidity levels. very low. 8% to 10% in the north bay towards wine country. here's a look at some of the other numbers across the region in the 80s towards santa rosa, the sonoma county airport. the bay area, fog is keeping cool near parts of the shoreline but things really change for tomorrow with the graphic on the heat advisory. we'll have more on thursday forecast in just a few minutes. >> thank you, mark. an east bay fire station that closed last year is

case. mourners tied the ribbons to a school fence. its grateful for the support and comfort of total strangers. >> i want to thank the entire community and all of our family and friends. >> investigators work more than 16 hour days tracking down more than 215 tips that have been coming in to a hotline. authorities this morning said they arrested three more suspects in connection with the bombing at the boston marathon two weeks ago. two of them are from kazakhstan. this is video of federal agents

detaining them. all three are students at the university of massachusetts dartmouth where bombing defendant, dzhokhar tsarnaev, attended. they're accused of making false statements to investigators and obstruction of justice. they removed tsarnaev's backpack from the dorm room and agreed to get rid of it after they concluded he was involved in the bombing. the martinez boy injured in the boston bombings got his wish. he celebrates his 12th birthday today at home. his parents returned to the bay area yesterday afternoon. his parents tell us he's recovering well despite his injuries. the next step is getting aaron back to school and his parents say they'll likely work with teachers and counselors to help with the transition. ktvu obtained the fbi photo showing aaron herren a few feet. he's on the left side of the street. his picture is not circled, but

the highway patrol investigating a high speed crash that happened in san lorenzo before the morning commute. the driver of a toyota corolla lost control and slammed into the highway overpass. >> this was not a chase. we had several reports from witnesses of a wreckless vehicle at a high speed and put the vehicle at approximately 100 miles per hour. >> the driver was taken to eden hospital, but no word yet on the extent of injuries. the chp officer on scene said it's fortunate no one else was

and they have a lot of folks driving by and, of course, they will honk and lots of cheers and support. we have folks from labor unions, community-based organizations, and environmental groups. basically, they say they're here to support san francisco's hard working families and one of the supervisors is going to come and speak here shortly. we have a lot of events going on for the may day and four different cities here. we can take a look at different events and san francisco, from 3:00 until 5:00, we have a march that starts at 24th and mitch and then they head over to the civic center. there's another rally in fruitville plaza and ending at de la cruze park and international march for lady of

guadalupe hall. and then a rally. we expect folks out here for another hour or so, and we will, of course, be talking to you and bring news at 5:00 tonight. i'm tara moriarty. channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. last year, a separate protest led to violence and damage. this is protesters clashing with police. they heard they're planning a protest in downtown oakland today and relayed that to business owners and officers will be out in force. city officials are urging businesses not to close, but be prepared in case something happens. on hold because of the bolt problem. they're trying to determine why 32 giant bolts use earthquake stabilizers suddenly snapped.

now the woman spearheading the drive to raise $3.5 million in private money for the grand opening party on labor day weekend is putting her efforts on hold. the event will include a public walk. it's become a bit of a grudge match. the nuggets escaped the elimination beating the warriors. the finger pointing started after the game. warriors coach mark jackson said denver sent hit men after seth curry. >> they tried to send hit men. give them credit. it wasn't cocky basketball. they outplayed it. >> in response, the warriors

say the nuggets play dirty every night. they look to win the series tomorrow night at oracle arena. in east county, the fire station reopened today on the first red flag day of the year. in brentwood, they were goring up for what could be a busy day with overnight winds up to 40 miles per hour and low humidity. the fire danger is extremely high. chief henderson said it was just coincidence and good fortune that the station reopened today. >> in my criticism, one of the earlier times i can remember being out for the first of may, it's been a very dry winter and we're going to see the consequences of it all summer. >> station 54 closed ten months ago because of budget problems and reopened with the help of a grant, but said a long-term solution is needed since the grant runs out in november of

2014. >> the heat will continue to top bay area weather headlines. the fire danger remains high with the red flag warning in place until 6:00 this evening. outside, here's our roof camera out towards the oakland estuary. mostly clear skies. we have been tracking patchy fog near the shoreline. but that's clearing out as well. you can see on the satellite, patchy fog is showing up. it's not extensive, but patches by parts of the marine county coastline and san mateo county coastline. half of the bay is expected to reach the 60s this afternoon. as far as the current temperatures, they are warming up as you would expect. it's 75 degrees that's in san francisco and the actual downtown san francisco reading at 72. a lot of 80s for the 12:00 hour by santa rosa and upper 70s in san jose and winds a big deal overnight. they've been trending down, but

still gusty winds. out of the north towards fairfield, 23 miles per changes. we cool off the numbers and bring in extra clouds that will be by sunday. high pressure continues to build with sunshine and warm temperatures for today. tomorrow, the hottest day of the week, that means at least mid 90s inland to 96 degrees but what's interesting here, the warmth will actually extend back out towards the west. this is a strange occurrence. the beach is back up to the low to mid 80s for your thursday. with that, even the beach is on the hot side as well. here we go with the heat advisory, not today, but for tomorrow. a good bet, drink lots of water and stay out of the sun if you can tomorrow. look at the temperature distribution for tomorrow. 80s, low 90s, up towards the mid 90s by thursday afternoon. today, we're heading in that direction, but not talking

about the excessive heat just yet. san francisco, upper 70s. santa rosa, 93 degrees and then a forecast high of 88 and san mateo, 84 degrees. here's a look at your five-day forecast with the weekend always in view. the key headline for thursday, we scale back on heat for friday. especially coast side and then cool things off by saturday and sunday. tori, this is recent development. we could have sprinkles sunday night. so go from record heat, at least for thursday, down to a big cooldown by sunday with chance of a few sprinkles. >> a little unusual. thank you, mark. ahead, what the fed just said and how wall street is reacting and a video game company based in the bay area is moving towards online gambling.

worries about a slowing economy are pulling stocks lower. one report out today showed u.s. factory activity fell in april to its lowest pace of the year. another reported that companies added 119,000 jobs in april, the fewest in seven months. taking a live look at the big board, the dower down 30 and nasdaq down 28 and s&p 500 closing at a record high down 13. one hour ago, the federal reserve said it will maintain the plan to keep short-term interest rates at record lows. the rate is expected to stay near zero as long as

unemployment remains above 6.5%. the fed also said it will continue to buy $85 billion a month in treasury bonds and mortgage backed securities. the purchases are intended to keep long-term borrowing costs down and encourage more borrowing and spending. tech analysts say zynga may get a boost if it's offered to allow online gambling with real money. they have a texas hold em poker game with more than 30 million active users a month. but players earn points, not money. the company filed for a license with the nevada gaming control board. tonight on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00, we're monitoring the weather conditions as well as the fires in the north bay as the red flag warning is remaining in effect until 6:00 tonight. also, we are keeping an eye on the various may day protests planned for today. thank you for trusting ktvu, channel 2 news, we'll see you the next time news breaks and we're always here for you on
