good evening everyone. i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. protesters have spent the day on the streets of oakland, san francisco and san jose. they are marching, chanting and taking over business districts. we have live team coverage tonight. our crews have spent the day fanned out speaking to protesters and police who are locked in a delicate balance of free speech and public safety. we begin with roberter handa in san jose. >> reporter: we are live at san jose city hall. you can see thousands of people have filled the plaza from two separate marchs and joined together for one big rally. all to support immigration reform. the crowd is made up of all ages and have filled a good portion of this plaza. chanting, singing, as well as circulating around petitions. urging to paz a comprehensive reform bill. the speakers addressing the crowd took part earlier today.

community leaders emphasized the need to pass a bill now before more families are broken apart by deportation. >> for all the people that live in fear of being deported. or of their parents being deported. it is intolerable. >> it's important to think about the humane reasons that we want to keep families together. we want every student to succeed. >> reporter: a key player in the immigration reform bill says the marchs are effective. acknowledges craft ago bipartisan bill in the house is not easy. >> the bill if we are able to reach a conclusion will not be everything i want. but that's the nature of compromise. >> reporter: back live at san jose city hall. you can see the loud but very peaceful rally is well

underway. along with the emotional support, volunteers are gathering signatures to see if they can get to that conclusion that she is working toward. we'll have an update on our 10:00 news. we want to take you to another mayday rally. eric rasmussen is in oakland now. crowds are gathering at this hour. eric. what can you tell us? >> reporter: i'm back pedaling a little bit. the march has just started down 14th street here in oakland. you can see the crowd just filling the street at this point. you might not be able to see all of them. there is also a significant police presence. the real focus says the protesters, one of the main messages has to do with the minimum wage in oakland which is $8 an hour. the slogan is the fight for is a sa. there have been similar protests in new york and chicago. as you get a better look at

marchers coming their way towards you, you see they're talking about employers demanding more for them. today we spoke to a woman who just came from the demonstrations in chicago to be part of this activity. she insists demanding $15 as a minimum wage is not unrealistic. >> if you go to get a burger, fries and a drink, that's going to be about between $6 to $8. that's one hour's worth of work for not even that great of a meal. you can't live off of that. we know it's not going to be a fast fight. >> reporter: as we continue here back live with the protest that has just begun as they begin to march down 14th street. you might be able to catch a glimpse of officers on the sidewalk here. talked to police, heard from a sergeant who insists their duty is just to keep the peace. protesters exercise their right to free speech. we'll stay with this march and bring you live developments throughout the evening.

of course, here at 10. we are live in oakland, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. paul chambers is live in oakland where thousands of immigrant families are marching for reform. >> reporter: we're live at the park. people are a couple inches away from us. there are police behind us. they're also taking part in the march. i talked to several police officers. there are tons of police officers who have been marching with them and also here at the park. everything has been peaceful. they were supposed to come to the park to take part in a part of the celebration. they did explain they think they have too many people to fit inside this park. so what they're going to do is go past the park and head all wait down back to the station where they will have their rally. we're trying to show you pictures of them right now but they are stopping just inches from where we are. so far police say it's been a

peaceful routine here. there are officers here in case everything happens. they don't want to cause problems and have a big crowd in the park. they'll continue and head to the bart station to have their peaceful rally ending right there. now we're live in oakland. i'll stay on top of this. if anything drops we'll bring it strait to you. so we've shown you the situation in oakland and san jose. now to rob roth who is live in san francisco where there was also a large mayday rally. >> reporter: that is pretty much winding down. about an hour ago we saw at least a thousand people here at civic center plaza. all demanding immigration reform. the day began with a massive march from 24th street in the mission district this afternoon. the crowd took up several blocks. people want chantors immigration policy. we met an east bay man who has

a latino husband who may have to leave the u.s. >> trying to deport him because the federal government won't recognize our marriage. denied me a green card for my husband because i'm gay. >> reporter: the mayday rally comes at a time when the senate is debating an immigration bill. the bill needs to be changed to allow families to stay together and eliminate long waiting periods. >> it's a historic moment. a real opportunity for us to fix a broken immigration system and promote for equitable situation for immigrants and workers in this country. i think that's why there was such a big turnout for this action today. >> reporter: we're back live. organizers say depending on what happens in washington, more marchs could be on the way. reporting live in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. a man arrested for throwing bricks and a metal pipe at

police last year was sentenced to two years in prison today. jesse nesbitt pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon. a year ago our news crew captured these images. police were removing protesters who had taken over a vacant building. more details on the history of mayday. back in 1890 workers in the united states and britain first held mass demonstrations to push for an 8 hour workday. it was meant to be a one time event. as trade union membership grew, the mayday protests continued and eventually spread worldwide. a pair of bills to help protect undocumented immigrant workers are moving through the state senate. one bill would man employers from threatening to use workers immigration status against them. the other bill would bar

employers from hiring workers brought to the u.s. by unregistered labor contractors. both easily passed. you can follow us on twitter for updates on all of the protests going on throughout the bay area. ktvu crews are on the scene and producers are tweeting out information about the protests and the neighborhoods they're impacting. fire crews are waging a fierce fire fight after gusty winds sparked several fires overnight in the north bay. we want to show you live picture now. this is a live look of sonoma county. you can see right now a smoky haze in the air. the yellow fire has been burning near highway 128 and yellow jacket ranch road. it was a different scene this morning. the fire started just before 1:00 this morning. hundreds of firefighters have been busy all day trying to

contain that wildfire. the flames burned dangerously close to a couple of vineyards. no homes are threatened. right now the fire is 50% contained. it expects to have the fire fully contained by this time tomorrow night. about a half mile up the road there another fire started near the rural home where nick and holy trulia live. this was sparked by downed power lines. their home was severely damaged by the fire. >> i've never had an experience like this. i wouldn't wish this on anybody. but i do feel blessed. >> he says most of what they lost can be replaced with the exception of two family photos. bill martin is live in the weather center where he's tracking the dangerous conditions in the north bay. >> that's right. the national weather service has reissued or extended the

red flag warnings. that's because conditions in the fire zone and around the bay area are still ripe for fire production. we have temperatures in the fire zone in the mid80s, upper 80s. look at winds. northeast at 6. northeast at 5. when these got going it was northwest at 7. when they got going they were gusting 35, 40. red flag warning has been extended until 12:00 tomorrow. so we'll continue not only with the red flag warning in the hills. we'll have the heat advisory. i'll be back with the impact forecast. on what you can expect on what will be the warmest day of the week. fire training was actually underway just yards away today from one of the fire fights in napa county. new at 6, law rain blanco is live where dozens who wanted to help couldn't. >> reporter: we're standing on

the drill grounds. you can see that building behind me. that's where they train on structure fires. they also pull hoses up that dry brush and the hills. it's also to get ready for fires as close as across the street. these firefighters training for fire season are booking up steep, dry brush. even while hauling hoses and 40 pounds of gear. this week long cal fire returning academy includes training for wildland fires, emergency medical services, hazmat, learning how to respond to a blackout situation when there's zero visibility. >> have to perform a task of putting a new air cylinder on his partners back without using his eyes. just the sense of touch. >> we are seasonal. a lot of us aren't fighting fire during the wintertime. getting back in the swing of things. >> reporter: these 65 men and

women are getting ready earlier than normal. >> conditions are extremely dry. conditions we're seeing thee now are generally more what we see for june. >> reporter: overnight the 75- acre silverado fire burned right next to them. >> right on the right flank. >> reporter: so close it made these trainees even hungrier. >> this morning we were talking about the different fires that were going on and everyone is excited to be back at work. >> reporter: these firefighters start monday. it'll have 160 seasonal firefighters on duty. reporting live, lorrain explain co. more details on what you can do to keep your home and family safe this fire season. cal fire recommends removing all dead vegetation within 30 feet of a building. cutting or mowing down grass to 4-inches. plus removing all tree branch at least 6 feet from the ground.

hall. they've gathered for a rally in support of comprehensive immigration reform. this is just one of many mayday protests going on around the bay area. we have crews in oakland, san francisco. and here in san jose watching these demonstrations tonight. if we get more information on what's happening we will be sure to let you know. it's being call add major step to get guns out of the hands of criminals. governor brown signed a bill that will provide $24 million to law enforcement. that will allow police to do a job that until now they said they didn't have the money to do. new at 6:00, ken pritchett is here to explain how that is going to be spent. >> reporter: california has a list of people prohibited from owning firearms. primarily felonies. tens of thousands of people on the list are actually known to have guns but there just hasn't been enough money to go after them. with a table full of high

powered weapons on display, attorney general harris called the signs of the bill. >> we have over 20,000 people on the streets of california right now who are known to be in violation of the law. are known to be in possession of firearms. >> reporter: this extra funding to crack down on persons, mostly felons prohibited from owning guns can be traced to the shooting at sandy hook elementary last year. state lawmakers were trying to find a solution to gun violence here. one being to fund law enforcement to get guns out of the hands of those who legally can't have them. >> over the course of last year we seized 1889 firearms. over 110,000 rounds of ammunition. >> reporter: those numbers could have been higher if not for a lack of funding. the number of felonies known to have firearms have outpaced arrests. the money approved today is

intended to address the problem. >> we contacted an armed and fro hinted person that had moved to another county. this person when contacted had 71 guns and he wasn't supposed to have any. >> reporter: law enforcement estimates the 20,000 people on the prohibited list own 40,000 handguns and assault weapons. the funding announced today will last for three years. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. new at 6, for a bay area girl today is like a second birthday. one year ago she had a life saving bone marrow transplant. rob roth talked with the 13- year-old who is hoping others will have the chance to do the same. >> reporter: vicky tran had something important to say to a man she met for the first time. >> i just wanted to say thank you for saving my life. >> reporter: the south san francisco girl had leukemia. she needed a bone marrow transplant and nobody in her family was a good match.

>> she would have died eventually. >> reporter: doctors say because vicky is part chinese, part vietnamese, finding a donor was especially hard. after a six month search they found a donor in san francisco. vincent pan. doctors performed the transplant a year ago today. >> it's heart warming to put a face to the donation process after a year. and most importantly to know she's doing well. >> i feel very lucky. it's very hard to find a donor. >> reporter: 10,000 people in the united states need bone marrow transplants every year according to the asian-american donor program. only half find matches. that's why vicky's family are calling attention for the need for people to register. >> maybe becan raise more awareness for the thousands of children and also adults who still need help. >> reporter: doctors say vicky's prognosis looks good and vicky says she feels good.

>> i feel pretty normal. i'm back to school and doing activities that i like to do. >> reporter: what's your favorite thing to do? >> i like to do ice skating. >> reporter: everyone is a possible match for someone. in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. that red flag warning extended until noon tomorrow. daytime highs today. it was hot out there. going to be warmer or hotter tomorrow. that's today. we'll see mid90s in the areas tomorrow. one of the warmest days we've seen. what will be the warmest day this week. heat advisory is going to go into effect tomorrow. temperatures to be well above average again tomorrow. tomorrow may be the hottest day of the week. high pressure building. air sinking. it warms, when it compresses it creates high fire danger. i'm sure this is why they have extended the red flag warning and issued the heat advisory.

fog and low clouds, i don't think we'll see those. the coast is going to be very warm tomorrow. upper 70s in the warmest coastal low cases. forecast highs tomorrow, reds are 90s. we're looking at 70s along the coast. maybe some low 80s as you get into golden gate park in the inner sunset district. around 19th avenue. 90s in downtown san jose. that's hot. i mentioned it earlier. a lot of concrete around there and get a temperature up to say 90 degrees in places like santa rosa or san jose. concrete heats up, get this ambient heat. makes that 90 feel like 100. in those urban areas, especially san jose. 92 degrees for daytime high. a lot of heat coming off the buildings. 92 goes up to maybe 98, maybe 100. that's why the national weather service has issued that heat
