i walk down the street. yeah. >> a rude awakening for one east bay store owner and his neighbors. the questions that surround an early morning fire. >> he's armed and dangerous and on most wanted list. but law enforcement says he's committed crimes up north as far as sonoma county. what the sheriff's department plans on revealing today. mornings on 2 starts now. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it is thursday may 2nd. happening now two wildfires continue to burn. the biggest of the two the yellow fire burned 125 acres north of calestoga. claudine wong is live. >> reporter: good morning.

we're on sota canyon springs road. up here i want to show you what's happening now. the fire crews that have been here all night long making sure the fire doesn't spread. behind the trucks you can see more crews. they have the day shift coming in and about to switch out. this is where the fire stopped last night. they were able to get it to stop from crossing much further over this hill. up that road, there is more damage because the fire stretches 800 or so feet there. i want to show you something. this gives you a good indication. it is dangerous out here. when you talk about this grove of trees. if you pan up, you can see another tree that has fallen into it and lodged its way through here. that's the situation this entire grove of trees and did not want to send anyone through that overnight. we talked to the incident

commander a short time ago about the dangers and why this may be a long day. >> when the fires come through them, they become dangerous because of their -- >> it's a stability issue right? >> stability issue. and the limbs can break. >> you don't want anyone in the dark going down there. >> exactly. >> reporter: now, you are taking a look at new video some of the damage. this is kind of a remote area when you talk about coming off sota canyon road that's led us to where we are. this used to be a result. you are taking a look at the caretaker trailer. obviously in charge of keeping an eye on everything. the trailer was destroyed. the caretaker is okay. they've been in contact with him. but there is a lot of damage in and around the ruins of this resort. we do know it was spotted

about 6:30 last night. they believed it was caused by downed power lines knocked down. made its way up the hills in this area in pretty rough terrain. >> reporter: we've zoomed in down the hillside where you can see some crews working down. they are on the opposite end of this grove. a little tough to see. they are putting water down on some of the hot spots. doesn't appear they are going to come up into the tree line. some of these trees need to be knocked down before they can make sure they are secure. we're going to keep an eye on the situation. keep you updated. ktvu channel 2 news. >> north bay unit is starting fire season two weeks early because of the record dry conditions causing increased

fire danger. about 65 men and women will complete training tomorrow. usually seen in june. also considering extra staffing at some stations. firefighters in southern california are getting an early start to fire season. a wildfire is raging in riverside county outside of los angeles. coming up at 7:09, we will go live to that scene where almost 3,000 acres have burned and more homes are being threatened. >> 7:05. san francisco police busy searching for a suspect in an early morning shooting. happened about 2:00 a.m. at 19th and mission. police chased the suspects to candle stick park. three suspects then ran away. two of them were captured. there's a third one still on the loose. the victim is being treated for a leg wound. sheriff's deputies plan to tell us new information about the search for a wanted man on

the loose for a month. police are calling dimitri storm a violent fugitive. tell us what storm is accused of doing. >> reporter: we're here at the sheriff's department in the valley. flz been many sightings here. they plan on telling us what they are doing to track him down. not just committed crimes here but as far north as san mateo county. take a look at dimitri storm. he is on the most wanted list. they are calling him a violent serial thief. blond hair and blue eyes. law enforcement says he's been on a crime rampage stealing vehicles and breaking into homes. there's video showing him on the prowl. storm is also wanted for assaulting police officers. he's also known to pull out weapons on his victims. police have connected him to

the breeze seems to have died down for some but picking up for others. today will be the warmest day. sinking air high pressure and component of north or easterly breeze. fog is well-off the coast. played into the morning forecast and disappeared. 70s, 80s and 80s to 90s. heat advisory is out. some are 20 degrees cooler. but impossible record breaking highs. it will still be well above average this time of year. san francisco is a tricky forecast going 80 almost 85. looked at ocean beach and san francisco state and there's a northeast breeze. everybody in the city will be on the warm category. that's just a given. the coast yesterday was a sound wind. if you don't have a breeze at all areas not far away can be 15 to 20. it will be warm and sunny on the coast today. this looks like the best beach day. 40s for some. 50s for others. this is higher elevation

really warmup. cooler saturday and a low drops in. what? yeah, a low drops in partly to mostly cloudy. scattered showers on monday. >> okay. time now 7:10. backyard fire in san jose overnight released dangerous smoke and almost burned down a house. take a look at the scene. the fire started about 11:20 last night. firefighters were worried about smoke with sulfuric acid. he was charging a battery and heard explosion. came outside and saw the fire and got out of control quick. >> the fire captain said a garage, sheds, tools and other equipment all were burned. the main house was not damaged. and luckily no one was hurt. >> it is 7:11. today is the deadline for governor brown to announce prison reform plan. the governor and department of

corrections must spell out how they will comply with a court order to reduce the prison population. they have to file the plan in federal court in san francisco by midnight. the goal is torcroing yarly 10,000 inmates this year. >> all right. 7:11. finally a break. the new development in the investigation of the u.s. consulate attack in ben gazy and -- benghazi and why the timing is raising questions. >> what prompted this violent clash that left 8 officers injured and over a dozen arrested.

>> all right, thank you, steve. 8 seattle police officers were injured during clashers with may day protestors. >> police used flash bangs and pepper spray to breakup the crowd. some demonstrators smashed store windows and hurled bottles, rocks and metal pipes. most of the injured officers suffered scrapes and bruises, one was hit in the knee with a piece of asphalt. about 17 protestors were arrested. seattle police promised a heavy presence this year after violence broke out after last year's may day protest. yesterday may day protests were not violent like the recent past. >> the largest bay area rally in san jose drew about 10,000 people calling for immigration reform. organizers say people are motivated and hopeful this

immigration reform fight right here in the u.s. >> reporter: president obama is counting on the u.s./mexico relationship to appeal to congress to move on immigration legislation. president obama and mexican president are on the same page with immigration reform. both support a path to citizenship for the 11 million people in the u.s. illegally. and both to establish a temporary seasonal work program for people from mexico and other parts of latin america. against a proposed boarder fence and moving in that direction could damage the commerce and trade relations. the struggling u.s. economy counts on mexico. in the top 3 for buying american goods. and 6 million american jobs rely directly on trade with mexico. president obama also wants to tackle the topic of drug trafficking and organized crime spilling over

into the u.s. why mexico is restricting u.s. involvement in that task when i see you next. live in washington, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:18. the obama administration is stepping into the growing contro verse ree over the so-called morning after pill. the whites house is appealing a judge's order to lift all age limits on who can buy the pills without a prescription. decision came a day after the fda lowered that age to 15 years old. >> 7:19. there are some security concerns today because today is the second anniversary of the death of osama bin laden. raided in the early hours of may 2nd, 2011. back in washington, president obama announced bin laden was killed in that raid. security experts say the white house is not trying to raise any special attention to this anniversary because there are

turn in the investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tori. right now as we speak, those three suspects are behind bars. their attorneys say they did nothing wrong but investigators say they tried to cover up the trail of one of the suspected boston bombers. they are not accused in the attack itself but dias kadyrbayev azamat tazhayakov and robel phillipos are charged with taking and disposing of key pieces of evidence. photos of the bombing suspect went public sent a text asking if he was involved. an fbi affidavit said later told him to take whatever he wanted from his room. the three men agreed to meet at dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room. took them along with a laptop.

phillipos said the men realized dzhokhar tsarnaev was a bombing suspect after seeing a report and decided to dump the backpack. >> they were engaging in will full blindness. not prevented themselves from learning. you don't just throw away a computer after a bombing like this when you see other kind of evidence. >> phillipos is a u.s. citizen. the other two are kazak nationals. the attorney for one of the suspects says his client is not involved and working with investigators. >> dias kadyrbayev cooperated with all law enforcement without the benefit of counsel to assist them. >> reporter: if these three suspects are found guilty they could face from up to 5 to 8 years in prison. and this morning, evidence that this investigation is nowhere near

the end, we know that investigators, once again this morning, met with the widow of the second bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev. back to you. >> thank you. it is 7:31. now to a developing story in oakland. right now there is a large police presence at 20th and broadway. ktvu brian flores just arrived on the scene. >> reporter: we have details on what's going on here. we are here on 20th and broadway. as you can see behind me a heavy police presence. again, we are in oakland but looks like this is hayward police department deal going on here. you see the police officers are in heavy tactical gear. entered into a business called the hat library. i don't know what that business is. but several police officers in heavy tactical gear. also looks like they are trying to

wedge some type of door open from what we are seeing from our vantage point. we don't know this operation or what's going on. at least two large trucks from hayward police department are here on scene in oakland at a business here. not exactly sure why but here with heavy gear. at least a couple dogs we've seen as well. they have shut down the area between 19th and 20th here in oakland for the time being. still unclear how long they are going to be here. we will stay on top of this and give you latest developments on mornings on 2. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> time is 7:33. the smell of heavy smoke is still lingering from a convenience store that caught fire this morning. firefighters arrived at the market on foothill boulevard and mitchell street around 4:30 this morning. while they

extinguished the fire, there was smoke. the owner of the store lives above the market. he was awakened by the security alarm. it's unclear because the alarm went off from a break in or firefighters. no reports of any injuries. it is too early to determine how the fire started. >> time is 7:33. new this morning san jose police say they captured a suspect in a burglary case. news chopper 2 took these pictures you are looking at of the arrest. police say they got a report of a burglary in progress in the 100 block of south 28 street about 5:30 this morning. when police arrived, they spotted the suspect in a vehicle. that's when the chase started. the pursuit ended when the suspect jumped out of the car. in other news, new trouble for one of the hikers who was rescued last month from a southern california forest. 19-year-old nicholaus is now being charged with a felony drug possession.

investigators say they found methamphetamines in his car when they were searching the mountains for him. got lost up in the wilderness on a hike. that search for the two cost about $160,000. sheriffs deputies still searching the area where leila fowler was killed. they have collected dna evidence from the little girl's homes. the knives are being tested to see if maybe one of them was used to kill her. the roadblocks are still up in the area. hotline has generated more than 300 tips but no break in the case. neighbors there are living in fear. >> honestly, we're thinking about getting home protection like a rifle. i'm locking the doors when he's not at home. i never did that before. >> the investigators say they don't believe that homicide was connected to a man who was

accused of kidnapping a child. wayrynen is being held. >> 7:35. a five year old boy in kentucky accidentally shot and killed his 2 year old sister. police say the gun was a 22 caliber rifle. the corner said the boy was playing with the rifle when it went off. the children's mother was home at the time but stepped outside. the shooting has been ruled accidental. a mother who was fatly shot in front of her four year old son will be laid to rest. 21-year-old donitra henderson was shot in her car on 54th street last week. her son was in the backseat and was not hurt. henderson's funeral begins at 11:00 a.m. at the morgan green and jackson funeral home. so far there are no arrests in the case. >> 7:36.

california federation of teaches is joining the fight to help city college of san francisco. the college could possibly lose accreditation this summer. the teacher's union says it has been secretive and violating the law. saying her husband was involved in an evaluation of city college. construction of a new ferry terminal has been approved. have five births and include benches, parking lot and new lights. designed to make it easier for people to connect with the vallejo terminal. and also atrablth more people and businesses to the island's water front. that construction is due to begin later this year. >> 7:37. check in with tara for update on traffic and word on back up in the south bay. >> 280 near the 880 split.

the stocks are opening higher on wall street a day after the marring et's biggest fall. general motors and other companies have announced higher profits. the dow is up 68. 14,769. the nasdaq up 65. just checking facebook stock is up almost 3% so far this morning. wall street was reassured facebook is keeping up with consumer shift from pcs to mobile devices when they announced first quarter earnings yesterday. facebook reported it sold more ads aimed at smart phone and tablet users and user traffic remains strong. also moving the markets this morning, the labor department announced the number of americans filing unemployment claims dropped to a five year low. 324,000 people filed for

meters plan to protest at city hall today. the board of supervisors will hold a hearing to install additional meters in neighborhoods including mission bay, the university of san francisco, patrero hill, the mission district. want to know how much revenue will be generated and whether there are plans for even more parking meters in other residential areas. supporters of the extra parking meters say they approve traffic flow and reduce congestion. >> trying to improve service for commuters. cal train plans to upgrade a bike storage facility at 4th and king station in san francisco. some of the passengers will be riding bikes to the station. they can leave them there for the day. right now the facility holds up to 100 bikes. but if the expansion project goes through, that number could nearly double. this will cost more than a half million dollars and also include new security systems.

you can see some of the crew off in the lower right hand corner. and the spire is being hoisted up the side of the tower. the sections of the 408 foot spire were supposed to be hoisted on monday but the work was delayed because of high winds. this is risky business at this height. once the final pieces are installed, one world trade center will become the tallest building in the western hemisphere at the height of 1776 feet. once again, live pictures right now from downtown new york city with the spire one of the final pieces being put into place. really impressive picture there as we bring it to you live from a news chopper in lower manhattan. there are security concerns nationwide today. today marks the second anniversary of the death of osama bin laden. a navy seals team raided his

stocks are higher in early trading on wall street. general motors and other companies have announced higher. taking a live look at the big board. the dow up 110. back up 14,800. the nasdaq is up 37. 1% jump there and s&p is up 13. >> time is 8:46. up to date on the other top stories. a popular oakland convenience store caught fire early this morning suffered heavy damage. happened on foothill boulevard and mitchell. alarms went off waking up the store's owner who happens to live above the store. luckily, no one was hurt. but investigators say still too early to know how the fire started. thousands of acres are burning in riverside county in southern california about 20 minutes outside of palm springs.

the summit fire started yesterday afternoon about 12:30. some homes in the area have been destroyed. people have been evacuated. the fire is only 40% contained. back here in the bay area, cal fire crews are still working in the north bay. the yellow fire is burning just north of calestoga. and another fire flared up in napa. what are they saying about the conditions? >> reporter: well, they are saying it's going to be a long day. they have to make their way around the fire. it's contained. they've got it under control but mop it up and make sure it doesn't flare up again. we had a branch that came down. i went to pick it up cause i wanted to show you what fell. this branch is about 11 feet long. not a huge -- wouldn't have felt good if it hit you in the head. i want you to imagine

now one of these larger tree branches and logs that we see have fallen. and you get a better idea of why they are so concerned about putting any crews down into this particular area of the fire. they certainly don't want anyone to be hurt. they are worried about what's above them and worried about what's below them. i want to show you video earlier this morning. we're told there are about 40 firefighters who are around the perimeter of this fire. 15 to 20 acres in size. it started last night when a power line came down and the high winds we certainly all felt. and that sparked the fire and they got around it pretty quickly. it was in difficult terrain as many fires have been over the last few days here. what they did is watched it and the hand crews are making their way around the fire. they have

a fire line established. and how to make sure it doesn't spread. looks like maybe all day today and in tomorrow. if we come back out here live i want to show you a little about what's happening here. it's been burning a long time. that smoke is being smelled across the bay area. but you talk about this property. very interesting property. this is off sota canyon road. you can't be up here without really being fascinated about what's happening up here. this is an old resort built in the 1850s. saw hey day in 1870s to 1930s. playground for the rich and famous when the hot springs were a hot item. there's a lot of these stone ruins and these actually helped stopped the fire. and then just couldn't
