conditions in the north bay. as the heat intensified today firefighters have been on the lines battling wildfires in the wine country. this map shows the location of three fires that kept crews busy over the past 24 hours. this fire decide barn and 75 acres -- destroyed a barn and 75 acres. another fire tore through the soda springs resort. burning 20 acres of grass and trees and abandon trailer was also destroyed. the biggest fire is in sonoma county. . >> patti lee is live where crews are battling the yellow fire. >> rerter: highway 218, you can see the command center that was established yesterday morning. you can't tell -- [no audio] >> reporter: look at the view from chopper two.

the crews, 120 people battling the fires. they are putting out hot spots in rugged terrain. this fire is burning on lands that lost 200 vines. they had hoped to have this fire 100% contained by 6:00 p.m. tonight but now say it won't be till noon tomorrow. >> reporter: in the next 45 minutes crews will try contain this fire. >> fire is 125 acres. and by 6:00 p.m. tonight we are hoping to have it 80% contained. >> reporter: it broke out wednesday morning and success in beating it out has been hindered by winds. >> our big problems are the heat, very low humidity and the heavy fuel. >> reporter: he says fuels include heavy brush and undergrowth are a signal of trouble ahead. >> we are well, well ahead of

our normal fire season activity. those fuels will be a problem by next month. >> two other wildfires that broke out are now out but crews will mop out hot spots yet they say crews are still in a race against time. >> making a big push to get this contained to be available for any other fires that might break out. >> reporter: i called the spokeswoman and she said at this point this fire is between 60-80% contained. she would have specifics by 6:00 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. the people fighting this fire here will go home to sleep and 20 people will stay to maintain and keep an eye on problems. patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose firefighters were busy this afternoon with a grass fire burning close to

homes. started at 12:30 p.m. between south king road and stallion way. flames burned up to back yards and where a radio tower sits. they knocked down the fire within an hour. firefighters in southern california continue to battle a couple of wildfires there. the bigicist the spring fire -- biggest is the spring fire, 6500 acres, threatening hundreds of homes. mobile homes have already been destroyed. evacuations have been orded and another fire in riverside -- orded and another fire in riverside county. the fire is 40% contained. >> reporter: officials completed the last snow survey today. no snow in the regular areas where they conduct the survey. they said the snow pack has a

water content of 17%. all of this comes after low amounts of snow in january and february. water officials aren't declaring it a drought yet but if we have a second connective year like this one they might have to do that. coming up at 6:00 p.m., the heat and fires in the north bay is making for nasty air quality in the bay area. why it is also led to a spike in 911 calls. parents say it is disturbing that leaders waited weeks before telling them about reports that led to a teacher being arrested on dozens of counts of criminal acts against children. ktvu's lorraine blanco is live with where the teacher is right now. >> reporter: parents here just got this notice today about the teacher's arrest. some say they are very angry they didn't know about this situation weeks ago when the

crime was reported. >> reporter: it looks and sounds like your typical school day pick up in union city. but today parents say they are more unnerved than ever. >> disturbing. it is scary. 7-year-old daughter is here. >> reporter: this letter notifies them a teacher was arrested for inappropriate contact with students. police arrested a third grade teacher. >> the investigation is continuing because there are still some children that are going to go through the interview process. so at this point there is potential for additional charges. >> reporter: police believe there are multiple victims. the investigation started april 12 when another employee saw him touching a little girl in

police raided a business in downtown oakland today looking for a man who has been missing for a month. ktvu's john sasaki tells us why they chose that business to search, john? >> reporter: if you look inside the window you could see a pool table. whatever this business is, police came to oakland to raid it because nigel jay was last seen here. >> reporter: police were armed in s.w.a.t. gear and brought dogs to search for signs of nigel jay this morning. police were concerned about associates of the business known as custom ink. >> there were a lot of people in here that we couldn't, you

possibly only for the time being. >> reporter: the jail facility is where the 50-year-old has been in custody since her arrest monday night. ramineh behbehanian was booked on charges of attempted murder and poisoning after she tried to switch two bottles of orange juice with rubbing alcohol but they couldn't make a decision on charges within 72 hours so ramineh behbehanian was released. people were upset till they learned she should still be charged later. >> she was a chemist. she went to college. she is educated and we should stick with the law, you done something wrong, let's go to the court process. >> reporter: the district attorney is waiting for lab tests. analysts say it is a logical step for a possible attempted

is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. heat and sun combining for a summer like day but it is the reason much of the bay area is under a weather warning. i am julie haener. >> and i am frank somerville. >> we will get to the weather in a moment. but we begin with breaking news. a police shooting has killed a young man who pointed a gun at officers. it began at 5:00 p.m. tonight. witnesses tell ktvu an intoxicated man was riding on a bicycle yelling and waving a gun. the witnesses say officers arrive and told him to put down the weapon but he did not do that and pointed the gun at the officers. the police fired, the man is now dead. the situation is still developing. we are working to get more information from police. as soon as we do we will bring them to you. the bay area is trying to beat the heat tonight. a live look outside downtown
