what happened here. we will go to tara if a moment. it happened around 1:30 this morning. investigators say 20-year-old woman was going the wrong way when she slammed into two other cars. one man in his 50s was killed. the deadly crash shut down all westbound lanes of the highway for several hours. chp is now trying to determine if alcohol was involved. ktvu tara moriarty will have more from the crash in just a few moments. at 4:30 let's go back to the desk. hank for that update. meantime we have developing news. right now a search is under way for a missing teenager in danville. police and sheriffs deputies believe she could be in danger. claudine wong is live in danville where the search is in full swing this morning. >> reporter: good morning. take a look behind me and you have the command center that has been set up all night here. this is the sheriffs search and rescue team that was called out at 9:00 last night. they've had vans and tables set up. this has been the starting

point for dozens of search and rescue folks as they looked for madeline and they have been searching for her since about 6:00 last night. they are telling us she is an at risk teenager and they are hoping to find her but they have not been able to find her now. they are going to suspend the search for a couple of hours. they are not stopping the search but they will take a break because of essentially resources are stretched thin. and they are worn out. we did just talk to the search manager about the overnight search and here's what he had to say. >> i had perhaps 45-50 searchers out in the field tonight on various assignments and locations. both urban and suburban out in the fields. high probability locations. >> but no sign of her? >> no. not at this point. >> reporter: so what happens now? >> what happens now is we are

going to search and rescue side of it is going to suspend our search right at the moment. my personnel are burned out. they have jobs they have to get to in the morning. for the next couple of hours we are going to stand down. >> reporter: we will give you a look at madeline lang l. she is 5'5" tall, 130 pounds. 15 years old she has reddish brown hear. she went missing last night at 6:00. we don't know the exact details of the circumstances only to tell you they are not sure about her emotional state and that her parents did call police immediately. again, back out here live in danville this is what has served as the command post. we can tell you in the next couple of hours they will send out telephone calls kind of a community alert to let you know they are searching for her. they will fire this area back up in a couple of hours.

we'll keep an eye on things and keep you updated. live in danville i'm claudine wong. we want to go back to our breaking news effecting traffic today. the chp says a wrong way driver is responsible for a fatal crash on highway 24. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is out there on the scene with an update. tara. >> the damage to this geometro is like anything i have seen. the top of it completely shorn off. it's just mangled. if you come over to the back this is engine and it's completely separate from the car. the chp just cleared the roadway and brought this wreckage to the parking lot. the accident happened on highway 24 westbound. that is right after the central lafayette moraga exit. here's what a source close to the investigation tells us. a man around 50 years old

driving the red geometro was struck by a car going the wrong way. a 20-year-old woman most likely intoxicated was driving a silver toyota. >> all right so we will check back in with tara moriarty in just a little bit. we also have breaking news of an american military plane crashing this morning. a tanker plane crashed after taking off from a u.s. air base in the central asian country of kyrgyzstan which is located west of china. the the plane disappeared off the radar near a remote mountainous area. the tanker broke into three pieces. there is no word yet on the number of people on board the plane or if there are any survivors. we are following the story in the newsroom. in over night news firefighters from a newly reopened station kept a strip mall fire from spreading.

firefighters sent this helmet cam video for us of their fire fight on sand creek road late last night. the flames damaged a lot of kitchen equipment there. this engine 54 put out the fire before it spread to neighboring businesses. station 54 just reopened on wednesday. it had been closed because of bucket cuts. in southern california a major wild fire continues to threaten homes and highways. the wild fire has burned about 8,000 acres and is threatening 2,000 homes. about 100 businesses are also effected. today hazardous teams will deal with the storm that deals with highly toxic pesticides. meantime firefighters continue to keep an eye on a fire that

is burning northwest of calistoga. that fire is effecting kendall jackson winery. so far it has burned 120 acres. entrench a bo -- a potential witness in the murder of eight-year-old lei la fowler is recanting her statement. investigators say the woman is now refusing to cooperate. >> the transcription of the running man was an important lead for investigators but as of now it has become clear that this witness is no longer credible. >> two other potential leads did not pan out as well. a hitchhiker seen in the area has also been eliminated. what is interesting and seems

contradictory detectives believe leila's killer is still in the gold country but they do not believe the public is at risk. a news briefing is scheduled for 1:30 this afternoon. oakland mayor jean quan is reviewing her numbers of officer involved shootings. she believes more training and updated computer system and independent police auditor like the one in san jose. the auditor would review complaints against officers. there have been 117 police shootings. 39 of those were fatal. the bay area could clinch the battle for super bowl 50 as early as today. nfl owners will decide whether the big game will be held in the new 49ers stadium or in miami. but they all vote on the nfl demand to spend $350 million to fix up the aging home of the miami dolphins. santa clara would be a hewn to

freeway the traffic is moving allock very well. also mismorning we're looking at -- this morning we are looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic here looks pretty good. and no problems by the way in the south bay. 280 or 101 let's go to steve. sal, thank you. subtle changes already. yesterday every wind direction was north or east. today there is a little bit not strong but a couple of the wind bashes from ocean beach to half- moon bay they are turning westerly to north westerly. that is a sign the coast will cool down. there is not much of a breeziest. a couple really interesting things are happening over the weekend. the low will retro grade back. so on monday when we meet again i might be saying scattered showers. 50s and 60s. just incredible lows again. 40s and 50s and 60s. the winds is really tailing off. there is a little westerly component at fairfield.

that is a huge difference. yesterday was north. west at sfo. east at oakland. there is still that fight going on. it looks like eventually that west wind will kick in. it just needs a little bit of high pressure. 30s to 70s on the temps right now. 36 up in tahoe. reno 47. 57 sacramento. not too bad for them. overall a hot day inland but a little cooler by the coast. it's there but it's not making much progress as you go inland. 60s to 80s to low 90s. but after today temperatures begin to plummet. we will drop into the upper 60s and possibility of cloudy to mostly cloudy skies on monday. big cool down will be on sunday. it starts tomorrow. >> we could use a little bit of cool down. just as the fire season gets under way the helpful tool that could hinder fire fighting efforts because of federal budget cuts. the steps san jose police are taking to keep things peaceful and the other big

skies are clear if a little bit of a westerly breeze. nothing strong. it's a sign of a little cool pattern near the coast. firefighters still on the scene of a fire in san jose. bails of paper an card cardboard caught fire. the fire started as families arrived at hockey practice. >> as we were driving in, we saw a wall of flames. it looked like all the paper was going up. >> firefighters worked for nearly four hours lugging 50- 100 pounds of gear into hot temperatures to bring that fire under control. they did stay over night spraying the smoldering bails with water trying to save the

metal structure of the building. time is 4:45. the national weather service says federal budget cuts could impact its ability to provide firefighters with accurate forecasts just as fire season gets under way. the national weather service employees are being furloughed four days out of the four day period. it could make it difficult to provide firefighters on the front lines with the updated weather conditions they need. most experts say that more than 100,000 new jobs were created but no one thinks the number will be a huge jump from the 88,000 new jobs in march. this report could be an indicator whether weak hiring in march marked a temporary lull. governor brown met a court ordered mitt night deadline -- midnight deadline to relieve over crowding in prisons.

and slowing the return of thousands of inmates who are being held in other states. california is under court order to reduce its prison population by another 9300 inmates this year. this morning president obama will speak to a group of mexican students does his visit to mexico city. president obama and mexican president enrique pena met yesterday. the two leaders discussed security, economic cooperation, and immigration. later today the president heads to costa rica with talks with central leaders. we have new developments. several in the investigation into the boston marathon bombings. cnn reports that the bombs used in the deadly attack were built in the apartment that suspect tamerlan tsarnaev shared with his wife and child. however, investigators stress that it is still unclear if tsarnaev's widow played a role in the bombing plot. no, ma'am word of the fourth of july was the original

target date of the boston bombings. the two suspects planned to carry out a suicide attack two months from now but the date was moved up because they were able to build their bombs faster than expected. they then reportedly changed the target to boston marathon. several people cheering as the hurste carrying tamerlan tsarnaev. the body of the bombing suspect is at a funeral home in new jersey. still not clear where it will go next. san jose police are adding extra patrols for cinco de mayo celebrations. two years ago there was scattered violence through the night including a stabbing and vandalism. to prevent a repeat, there will be more officers on the streets. if you are driving in the area on sunday, expect big delays as well. many streets will be closed down. the san jose sharks are also playing game three of their playoff series at hp pavilion

that night also. 4:48 is the time. it's a horrible scene on highway 24 but sal has the update. >> they are just now leaving. all the trucks and cars have been removed. let's go to the final scene as the trucks the flat bed tow trucks are pulling away with the badly damaged vehicles that were involved in the fatal crash. they were off to a parking lot. highway 24 has been reopened and now these vehicles are going to an evidence lot where the investigation will continue and chp is just about to clear the scene completely here in lafayette. highway 24 by the way has been reopened but it was closed from about 1:30 in the morning until about 4:30 and at 4:30 in the morning we have that first live report there that lets you know that 24 has been reopened here. you can see the traffic is moving through right through where the accident was. it's now open between walnut creek and oakland. moving along and taking a look at the bay bridge.

westbound. it's a light commute. until major problems getting -- no major problems getting into san francisco. if you are driving in 280 that traffic does look good. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. well record setting day yesterday. it might be close to a few today. the record high until sfo in san francisco is only 79. for inland areas it will. there is a little change i will tell you the first week of may here has been a scorcher. it looks like some cooling take place today. go about ten degrees on the coast because there is no fog there yet. the wind is turning a little more southerly to south to northwest. a little cooler around the bay. i think one more day of hot inland. maybe down one to two. instead of 90 maybe 89. tomorrow everything will start to drop dramatically. today we are waiting for one system to the north and another one to the south. it looks like they will merge but not until sunday or monday. 40s and 50s and 60s.

the topic of a school board meeting. the school has been closed since a gunman opened fire and killed 20 children and six adults. there are two options for what to do with the school either renovate it or build a new school next to the existing building. a union city teacher has been arrested accused of molesting his elementary school students. he is a third grade teacher. police believe he victimized several eight and nine-year-old girls. he was arrested on wednesday on 17 counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child plus 23 counts of annoying and molesting a child. the investigation started three weeks ago when a school worker said she saw howie touching a girl in his classroom. police still need to interview a number of children. some employees at the oakland coliseum and arena are warning their bosses about a rat problem. the workers say they have seen rats in the ivy around two buildings. they have never seen rats inside the complex but they don't think the rats help the

image of the facility. the coliseum authority says it comes from the nearby creek. the creek is federally protected so it might be difficult to set rat traps there. there is a rare site in truck key after a bear got stuck in a pickup truck. the black bear somehow opened the door but when he got in it closed behind him and he got stuck. the owner of the truck started filming the whole thing on his cell phone. the bear tried everything possible to get out. he was later freed by wildlife officials. they think he was looking for food. destroyed the man's backseat. as you can see there. >> maybe he should have called the authorities quickly instead of filming for awhile. 4:55 is time. let's check in with sal for a look at traffic. >> pam, what is film? >> film. sorry. okay. what do you call it when you
