still above average temps. a big change on the weekend. steve, highway 24 looks good between walnut creek and oakland. the traffic is moving along pretty nicely as you drive up to the caldecott tunnel. it happened around 1:30 this morning. investigators say a 20-year-old brentwood woman was going the wrong way once she slammed into two other cars. one man in his 50s was killed. another person was hurt. the suspected wrongway driver suffered minor injuries. chp believes she was drunk at the time of the crash. let's go back to the desk. developing news. search continues for a missing teenager in danville. claudine wong is on the story. you know about this teenager and why there is concerns for her. >> reporter: that is right. we are at the command post what has been set up as the command

post all night long. i want to show you pictures right away of madeline langill. danville police looking for her. she last left her house about 5:30 last night and asked for her help to look for her. we did talk to the search team manager this morning about why she is considered at risk. >> for the most part she is a 15-year-old girl. her emotional state is undetermined at this time. it is at night, early morning hours and there is always the potential for something going wrong. >> reporter: let's take you through the timeline of what happened out here. 5:30 she goes missing.

6:00 danville police are called. 9:00 search and rescue team is called out and they begin their overnight search. about 45 different folks volunteers with the search and rescue team came out. they have been searching areas. suburban areas. >> we refer to it as suspension at this point. i don't have any other personnel to put in the field. >> reporter: back out here live at the command post they are doing a suspension of the search but as you can see the vehicles are still out here. over the next couple of hours we do expect more activity. first what is going to happen around 7:00 or 7:30 they will put out a robo call that which is an automated phone call that goes out to residents in the area. asking them to keep an eye out. call them with information. then this new search team will come on in here. they are going to and this.

time now 6:03. happening new several bay area firefighters on their way to ventura county. they will help fight a major wild fire. it's called the spring fire. it has spread to the pacific coast highway which has been shut down twice in less than 24 hours because of all the heavy smoke. we want to show you live pictures. look at how this fire is burning. about 8,000-acres have burned already. 2,000 homes are threatened. about 100 businesses are also effected. later on today hazardous material teams will focus on a store containing toxic pesticides that caught fire. several schools in the area including cal state channel islands canceled classes today. now bay area strike teams have been sent to another major wild fire burning east of chico in a

rural area. it has burned at least 10,000 acres and the strong winds have made it hard for firefighters to put it out. it's only 10% contained. so far no stretchers are threatened. federal budget cuts could impact its ability to provide firefighters with accurate forecast just as the fire season is getting under way. national weather service employees are being furloughed four days out of each four month period starting around the fourth of july. the agency says the cut backs could make it difficult to provide firefighters on the front lines with the updated weather forecast that they need. better than expected news this morning in the unemployment numbers for april. according to the report that came out just about 30 minutes ago u.s. employers added 165,000 jobs in april. that is lowering the unemployment rate to a four- year low of 7.5%. coming up at 6:15 we'll get reaction to the numbers this

morning. time now 6:05. investigators from the agencies that credit health facilities all over the nation made an unannounced visit to the nevada sakerettic hospital. it could determine whether it could keep its federal funding and gold star accreditation status. reportedly since 2008 the hospital allegedly paid fees to put 1500 patients on buses and send them to cities and towns all over the country. 500 of those patients reportedly were sent here to california. the city of san jose has proposed a financial settlement in the case of a small child killed three years ago by a falling tree. two-year-old mateo ortiz died after a tree fell on his family truck. the san jose mercury news reports that they are recommending a $325,000 settlement to his parents who were hurt but survived the

accident. the family has made no accident comet. the city council will be asked to approve that settlement on may 14th. people in the bay area are not the only ones waiting for the test results of the faulty bay bridge bolts. engineers around the world are interested in this story. how california deals with the issue, could help others states and countries avoid similar and potentially deadly mistakes. cal tran is wondering why a third of the 96 bolts snapped. nfl owners will decide whether the big game will be held in the new 49ers stadium in santa clara or in miami. and today florida lawmakers are set to vote on the nfl's demand to spend $350 million to fix up the aging home of the miami dolphins. santa clara would pretty much be set to host the super bowl if florida lawmakers kill that

renovation plan. we are watching live as it happens. we want to take you down to moffett field right now. the world's most advanced solar plane is taking off. over the last few minutes the plane has been powering up its engine. solar impulse will fly to phoenix, arizona for the first leg of its cross country trip. going all the way to new york. the plane is expected to arrive in phoenix at 1:00 tomorrow morning. so it's not really a quick traveling plane but the solar impulse is the first that can fly during the day and night without fuel. the plane is expected to take off in just the next few minutes. we are keeping an eye on. you can see a few other solar enthusiast down there watching this. we'll dip back in there live to watch it as it happens.

happy friday. we do have -- i'm looking at all the observation. it's turning westerly. it's trying to. sfo is up to ten. travis last hour i looked from san pablo bay. travis went from nine to two. cooler coast and bay. but still warm to hot inland. fog is not there. it's down off the central california coast. first week of may has been hot. i told you. it was hot. ten degrees cooler by the bay. around the coast i should say. a little cooler around the bay. still hot inland unless that breeze really decides to get its act together. i think one more day of 90s here. i don't see much changing yet. although mt. diablo will have a northwest breeze. today will still be warm. we had offshore wind east, northeast. all the way to the coast. i was checking ocean beach yesterday. it was just due east. today it has turned a little southerly and trying to turn southerly. coastal cooling today. still warm to hot inland.

way above average for this time of year. surprising the record high for sfo in san francisco today is only 79 degrees. 40s and 50s. hayward has a little easterly breeze. north at napa. southwest at fairfield. west 10 at sfo. unbelievable snow continues. the system is stalled out. yesterday burlington, vermont was 84 degrees. 39 in kansas in may. and it's still getting snow on the backside of kansas city. we sit here baking but there are changes brewing. system is going to move back from inland and park itself right off the bay area by probably sunday, monday. sunny and warm to hot inland. it's always a tough, tough call when that sea breeze kicks in but it will be one more day with way above average temps.

it crashed near the border of kyrgyzstan. the american official there says five people were on board. there is no word yet whether or not there is any survivors. the plane had just taken off from a u.s. air base when it went down in a remote mountainous area. a fire crew and three ambulances have responded but the train is very rugged and

isolated. we will stay here ktvu channel 2 news for continuing updates on this developing story. time now 6:15. cnn now reporting three men from yemen who were members of al qaeda took part on that attack at the u.s. consulate in benghazi. it's not clear if they were sent to libya specifically to carry out the attack or if they were already in benghazi and just decided to take part in it. reportedly the men were tracked to mali where it's believed they joined islamic groups there but authorities were never able to find them. the labor department says enough jobs were added last month to help the unemployment rate here a four-year low. as ktvu kyla campbell reports economists say the sluggish economy is picking up pace again. >> reporter: this report

appears stock. more jobs added than anticipated. take a look at the numbers the labor department says 165,000 jobs were added in april. that is strong enough for the unemployment rate to tick down to 7.5%. that is the lowest since december of 2008. more positive points the labor department. both are much stronger than previously reported and 210,000 people reentered the labor market last month. economists predict a good day on wall street. opening bell is in 15 minutes. stock futures jumped over the last 45 minutes and the world market immediately saw positive numbers. we will continue digging through this jobs report to see which sector saw the most growth in april and we'll have the details next hour. live in washington kyla campbell. we just received new video this morning taken by firefighter helmet cam.

take a look. you can see footage shows late last night's fire fight at a brentwood catering business. firefighters from the newly reopened station kept that fire. oakland mayor -- she proposed more training and updated computer system, and independent police auditor like the one in san jose. the civilian auditor would review complaints against officers. since the year 2000 the oakland tribune says there has been at least 117 police shootings. 39 were fatal. time now 6:18. one of the most popular broadway shows is returning to the bay area. it's the smash hit the book of mormon. it's coming back to san

francisco and late november. scalpers were selling tickets for almost $5 how long a piece. let's check in with sal. how does it look? >> it looks pretty good. starting out on 237 get into the valley there are no major traffic jams here. usually by now we see something. highway 101 and 280 are cooperating. also the morning commute at the bay bridge toll plaza backed up for a five minute delay. maybe ten minutes if you're on the longest lines here. it's not all that bad. the metering lights are indeed on. looking at marin county southbound 101 between novato and san rafael that traffic looks good. and 101 stays good all the way through peninsula. no problems on the dumbarton or san mateo bridge. either way really. from hayward to the peninsula it does look good. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very good morning. skies are clear. no fog. we do direction of that wind

we have to take a look at this video. two thieves stealing gas almost ended in disaster in australia. it started with a gas attendant filling up a car without paying. that's what happened. when the worker approached the getaway driver took off hill his accomplice was still feeling the tank. the woman got caught up in the host. tort gnatly though it did not ignite. the woman somehow managed to get away but the driver was later arrested. a former bart police officer involved in a confrontation that led to the shooting of oscar grant is now being charged with unemployment fraud. bart fired anthony peronie after the shooting. he was believed for escalating tensions between police and bart passengers before johannes mehserle opened fire. he still collected unemployment checks even though he had a job. pirone was supposed to appear

separated from the car. the fire department had to sheer off the top to get the victim out. but it was too late. he had died. the accident happened at 1:30 this morning on highway 24 westbound near happy valley road in lafayette. that is right after the moraga exit. the chp shut down the freeway this that direction for three hours. a source tells us that a man around 50 years old from brentwood possibly on his way to work was driving that geowill metro heading westbound when he was struck by a drunk driver going the wrong way. >> it does look like alcohol did play a role in this. drunk driving is the worst. to go out there and drink and drive and be irresponsible and injure other people by your actions. >> reporter: and she probably didn't have any idea of what happened. >> at this point i don't think she did. >> reporter: we are told that suspect is a 20-year-old woman

about a fire burning northwest of calistoga. we just learned that fire is now 97% contained. it has burned 125 acres. the fire is effecting the kendall jackson winery which did lose grapevines in that wire. san jose firefighters are still at a paper recycling plant fire more than 12 hours after it started. the fire crews are out there breaking apart bails of recycled paper just making sure they are not still smoldering. this fire started about 6:00 last night. it took firefighters four hours to get it under control. luckily no one was hurt. the crews will stay out there for the next half hour or so. still no word on how the fire started. dozens of police officers and sheriffs deputies will continue to search for a missing teenager in danville this morning. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong is out there in danville covering the

disappearance of madeline. >> reporter: the command post is expected to get busier in the next half hour. they do have the sheriffs vehicles set up and some people are beginning to arrive. we pan over to the right you can see the first crews beginning to arrive. they were given a 7:00 call out for the next crew to come set this place back up. at 8:00 the full team will arrive. i want to show you a picture of her. she is 5'5" tall, 130 pounds. 15 years old. she was seen leaving her house. she was wearing a blackener van that t-shirt. they have had dozens of people over night but suspended the search for a short time this morning. i talked with a search team manager about what the plan for this morning will be. >> in the morning there will be a second operational period at

disappearance. at 8:00 the full tome will ahere. live in danville claudine wong. a potential witness in the murder of eight-year-old leila fowler is recanting her statement. yellow crime tape still surrounds the fowler home. yesterday a sketch artist met with the witness to develop a sketch. she said she saw an intruder running from the crime spree last saturday. without going into specifics that woman is no longer a credible witness. >> the witnesses description of the running man was an important lead as investigators. but it has come clear that this witness is no longer credible. >> two other leads debt not pull off as well. and a hitchhiker in the area

suspended search for a missing teenager in danville this morning. 15-year-old maddie was last seen around 6:00 last night. the search is based in the sycamore valley road. and about 30 minutes ago the world's most advanced solar plane took off from moffett field on the first trip around across the country. now the plane's first stop will be phoenix, arizona. it will then continue its journey to new york. san jose police are trying to make sure that this weekend's cinco de mayo celebration does not get out of control. brian flores is in san jose with how police plan to keep the festivities in check. >> officially the cinco de mayo parade was canceled a few years ago because organizers could not pay for police but large crowds converge here to celebrate. police officials expect the same thing this weekend for the

largest celebration. let's go to video from last years celebration. most people celebrate peacefully. last year there were instances. they arrested 21 people for things like narcotics possession, public intoxication, and assault with a deadly weapon. businesses around here will be celebrating. in 2011 only seven arrests but there were many instances of scattered violence throughout the night including a stabbing and bottle. now along with regular patrol officers this weekend san jose police will deploy officers from their metro and merge units. it's also being reported the gang investigation unit will be on duty helping with gang -- let's take you back out here live. the roads look pretty good. some roads will be closed and traffic will be diverted. certain parts including east san jose and area around king

road. coming up we will tell you about another event that is going on this weekend that may make the roads even more hectic. we are live in san jose i'm brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. >> there will be extra police patrols out on bay area roads this weekend. they will be especially looking for drunk drivers. if you do plan to drink this weekend, the police advise plan ahead. pick a sober driver. some other good options call a friend or take a cab or ride public transit. we do have new information this morning in the investigation into the boston marathon bombings. cnn reports the bombs used in the deadly attack were built in the apartment that suspect tamerlan tsarnaev shared with his wife and child. investigators stress it's unclear if tsarnaev's widow played any role in the bombings. there is now word the fourth of july was the original target date for the boston bombings. investigators say the two suspects had first planned to carry out a suicide attack on

let's face it this has been one hot couple of days here in may. it's all about to change. that west breeze is showing itself just not that strong yet. although at sfo it's ten miles an hour. a little cooler around the bay. we'll still say 80s and 90s inland. a low is going to backtrack and merge with another one off southern california. combination of those two mean a huge drop in our temps over the weekend. today 60s to 90s. this will be begin one more day of above average temps. the cooling kicks in on saturday. much more on sunday. thank you, steve. happening right now we are following the wild fires burning in southern california this morning. thousands of homes we understand are still threatened. a highway is shut down. several bay area firefighters are now there to help. reporter bob joins us now in cam rio with the latest. good morning, bob. >> reporter: we just got an

update from cal fire. this is 10% contained. this has burned 10,000 acres. behind me this is the southern and western flank of the fire. you talk about a major freeway being shut down. we're talking about highway 1 the specific coast highway. part of that shut down over night and into this morning because of this fire. this is continuing to march toward the malibu area. we're actually in an area called point la guy right next to the ocean. the fire burned all the way down to the pacific coast highway. the concern is that this fire could continue to move southward and westward toward the malibu area. there are homes there. we are in an evacuation area. hundreds of homes have been evacuated in this area. firefighters have been doing a great job of containing this fire and keeping them away from those homes. no structures in terms of homes have been burned.

it was a rare sight in truckee. >> a bear got stuck in a pickup truck. >> this is amazing. i think it's pretty awesome this happened. >> that black bear somehow opened the door to the truck. but when he got in the door closed behind him he got stuck. the owner caught the whole thing on cell phone while the bear was trying everything possible to get out. >> he was later freed by the police. they think he was just looking for food. luckily no one was hurt but the man's pickup truck it was pretty torn up. getting closer to 7:00. let's check in with sal. how is the commute? >> it looks pretty good. traffic moving pretty well. let's go to 880 and fremont.
