of the nba playoffs. there was a big surprise along with the thrills. mornings on 2 begins right now. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it is friday, may 3rd. happening now, the search for a teenager and ramping back up in danville: ktvu is at the command post. she spoke with the mother of the missing girl just a few minutes ago. what did she tell you, claudine. >> reporter: i spoke with her at her house which is five minutes from where she is. she is just saying she wants to urge anyone with information to call police. she has been talking police all night and into the morning about all possible scenarios where her mother might be. pleading with anyone with

information to come forward. as you can see, they have opened up the trailer. we were talking about the search that would ramp back up. the crews that were told to come out here to set this back up for the full team to arrive were told to be here at 7:00 and they have arrived in the last couple of minutes. they will set everything up. when the team arrives, they can be dispatched to any areas that they think she might be. let me show you a picture of maddie. she is 15 years old with reddish brown hair. she was last seen about 5:30 leaving her house. she was wearing a black nirvana t-shirt. she is considered at risk because they're not sure of her emotional state. we talked to the sheriff about what the plan for the morning would be. >> in the morning there will be a second operational period at which point a different search manager will show up and

support people. another full team callout will go out and we will resume our areas. we will go back and research the areas that we have already searched. and depending on the amount of information that we get or clues, we discover, we may expand the search area. >> let's take you back through what happened. 5:30, she was last seen at her house. she was leaving in what they call unknown emotional state. by 6:00, her family and parents were concerned enough to call police. danville police were called in. by 9:00, danville police decided it was time to call for extra help. they called the county search and rescue team. and then volunteers radio out overnight combing the area, looking anywhere that they think she might be. back out here live at the command post as they continue to set up tables, they will get their maps out and flyers out. once the full teams arrive in the next hour or so, they will dispatch them to various

locations. we have been told that an automated call will go out to danville residents letting them know about the search, trying to get as much information as they can out there in hopes of tracking her down as soon as possible. live in danville, ktvu news. >> we will check back for an update. 7:03, a potential witness in the murder of layla fowler is recounting her statement. yellow crime tape still surrounds the home. a sketch artist met with a witness to develop a composite sketch. she reported seeing an intruder running from the crime scene last saturday. the woman is no longer a credible witness. >> the witness recounted her previous statements and identification of the man she saw running away. she also refused to provide a description to the sketch artist so a composite could be

completed. >> two other potential leads did not pan out either. a kidnapping suspect has been ruled out of the stabbing and a hitch hiker in the area has also been eliminated. what is interesting, though, and seems contradictory is that detectives believe layla's killer is still in the gold country but they do not believe the public is at risk. a news briefing is scheduled for 1:30 this afternoon. >> the bay area could clench the battle for super bowl 50 as early as today. nfl owners will decide whether the 2016 super bowl will be held at the new 49ers stadium or in miami. today florida lawmakers are due to vote on the nfl's demand to spend $350 million to fix up the aging home of the dolphins. santa clara would be a shoe in to host the super bowl if the plan is rejected. the stadium is scheduled to

open next year. >> 7:05. want to check in with sal and the roads. >> it looks good out there. we are looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's not as crowded as it would be approximate on a regular -- on a regular day. as you can see, it's maybe a five-minute delay. you don't have to worry about it. the morning commute looks good. if you are driving in san francisco and the 80 freeway. 80 and 101 are both looking good. if you're driving on the hayward freeway, we usually have slow traffic. it has been better than it normally. >> good morning on this friday. clear skies, no fog. it's well off the central california coast. we don't have to deal with that. we have a westerly breeze. not strong or anything, but compared to east when it was east or northeast, things are turning on shore. yesterday was the hottest day for sure.

temperatures way above average. we had a wind from the higher elevations all the way to the coast and out to sea. one low spinning off of southern california will backtrack and head right over the bay area. boy, will that send our temperatures dropping over the weekend. today though, one more day of 80s near 90. some of these locations yesterday were about 68 or 70 degrees because of that north wind. things have changed. still a north wind at napa. almost a sea breeze. sfo has been flirting with a west wind all morning. 30s with an unbelievable amount of snow anywhere from about a foot to 18 inches of snow in minnesota and wisconsin. all-time records shattered. that goes into the plains where highs were in the 30s yesterday. 39 degrees in kansas city. higher clouds in southern california, that is a change

foreour pattern. today we have clear skies but we get the west breeze. still hot inland. not as hot as yesterday, but close. taking temperatures down a few degrees for some. upper 70s to 80 for the coast and bay. and 80s and 90s inland. after today, the temperatures take a drop. cloudy to partly cloudy and maybe scattered showers monday and tuesday. >> better than expected news this morning in the unemployment numbers for april. according to that report, it came out just 30 minutes ago, u.s. employers added 165,000 jobs in april, lowering the unemployment rate to a four- year low of 7.5%. come up at 7:15 how wall street is reacting to the new numbers this morning. >> gunshots inside an airport. what prompted this terrifying incident in houston and what was found in the gunman's suitcase. >> why gun control supporters are planning to be at the nr a

>> 40s and 50s, some areas on the mild side. the wind is turning westerly on the coast. cooler there. still 80s to low 90s. >> the time is turning 7:11. many firefighters heading to ventura county to help battle the wildfire threatening thousands of homes. the fire has spread to the pacific coast highway. it's been shut down twice in less than 24 hours because of the heavy smoke. about 10,000 acres have burned already. 2,000 homes are threatened. about a hundred businesses are affected. later on today, hazardous materials teams will focus on a store that contains toxic

pesticides that caught fire. classes were canceled today. the bay area strike teams have been sent to another major wildfire burning east of chico. it's known as beute meadows. the strong winds out there made it hard for firefighters to put it out. it's only 10% contained. no structures are threatened right now. >> it is 7:12 back here in the bay area, firefighters in the north bay made a lot of progress overnight on a fire burning northwest of calstoga. firefighters were able to bring the containment up to 97%. it burned 125 acres, including some grapevines owned by kendall jackson. meanwhile crews are keeping a close high on several fires that started in the wine country in the past 48 hours that we have been covering at you. one started at a smaller vineyard and a third happened

west of silverado country club. all those fires are fully contained. but firefighters want to make sure there's no flare-ups throughout the day. >> the national weather service says federal budget cuts could affect its ability to give firefighters accurate forecasts just as the fire season gets under way. they are furloughed four days out of each four-month period starting about the fourth of july. the weather service says the cut backs will make it hard to give firefighters updated forecasts that they need. >> 7:13. there is a developing story in central asia where an american military plane has crashed. a kc135 tanker went down near the border. the aircraft refuels american warplanes in afghanistan. an emergency official says five people were on board but there's no word on whether there are any survivors. the plane had just taken off

from an u.s. air base when it crashed in a mountainous area. three ambulances have responded but the terrain is rugged and isolated. an autopsy is scheduled today on the gunman who opened fire at the bush intercontinental airport in houston, texas. the man went to a terminal yesterday and began firing into the ceiling. the shooting sent passengers scrambling for cover. it happened 150 feet from a homeland security office. when agents confronted the individual, he shot and skilled himself. he has been identified as 29- year-old moore of beaumont, texas. >> it's sad. it brings tears to your eyes because of the way i knew him. it's a sad thing. i wondered where he had been, i haven't seen him, but it's horrible. >> airport security recovered

moore's suitcase. inside was a fully loaded magazine clip. earlier in the day he posted that he intended to commit a mass shooting. a handwritten note found on his body said that he changed his mind and wanted to only kill himself. >> the national rifle association is gathering in houston for the annual convention. more than 70 people are expected at this 3-day convention. the theme, stand and fight. gun control supporters are planning a vigil for victims outside of the convention hall. the number of jobs added last month topped the expectations and the national unemployment rate hit a four- year low. the shruggish economy may be picking up steam. >> reporter: the unemployment rate is the lowest that we have

seen since december of 2008. it is now at 7.5%. this comes after 165,000 jobs were added last month. almost half of those jobs were created in professional services, including management positions. restaurants and bars added 38,000 jobs. the retail street created 29,000 jobs. while 19,000 positions were added in health care. there's better news coming out of the report. the labor department revised jobs added in february and march and they're much higher than previously reported. plus, 210,000 people reentered the workforce. the number of people who stopped looking for work held steady, meaning this unemployment rate is a more accurate reflection of just how many americans are out of work. all of this has been fantastic news for wall street this morning. just in the past 30 minutes alone, the dow has been closing in on a record high of 15,000. we will keep a close eye on that and check back in with you

the next hour. >> 7:16. cnn is reporting that three men from yemen members of al-qaeda took part on the attack on the u.s. console at in libya. according to the report, it's not clear if the men were sent to libya specifically to carry out the attack or if they were already there and decided to take part in the attack. reportedly the men were tracked where it is believed they joined groups fighting there but authorities were never able to find them. the attack on the consoleate killed four americans. >> the preliminary hearing is set to begin in san francisco's so-called bound and gagged murder case. six defendants are charged with killing a man who was found bound and gagged on the streets in the visitation valley in december. police say the homicide victim was found with a woman who was seriously hurt.

prosecutors still have not revealed the possible motive, but they stress the defendants and the victims all knew each other. they say this is not a random crime. another court hearing set today for the man accused of killing five people in san francisco last year. ben luke is charged with five counts of murder for the killings of three women and two men. a preliminary hearing will be set in the case. a former bart police officer involved in the confrontation that led to the shooting of oscar grant is being charged with unemployment fraud. he was blamed for escalating tensions between police and bart passengers before the man opened fire. he later joined the u.s. army. state officials say he still collected unemployment checks even though he had a job. he was supposed to appear in court this week, but he is serving in afghanistan. his case has been postponed

until next year. >> it is 7:18. if you're looking for something to do with the family this weekend, you could get into some bay area museums for free. bank of america and merrill lynch are kicking off national museum month by allowing card holders access to 150 museums in 94 cities. this saturday and sunday, card holders get in free at participating bay area museums, including the san jose museum of art and the tech museum of innovation. one of the most talked about shows on broadway is returning to the bay area. the book of mormon will come back in late november. it played to record-breaking crowds in san francisco last year. tickets were selling for a thousand dollars each from scalpers. >> the time is 7:19. kohls will have to pay up for

overcharging customers. they were paid to pay $500,000 fine to settle a complaint that it made customers pay too much for some items. district attorneys in santa clara, santa cruz and fresno counties fooled a lawsuit after an investigation found that hundreds of incorrect prices at the checkout scanners. the store has switched over to electronic price tags where it's easier to update prices. this is a big night for the newest class of recruits at the san francisco police academy. the 46 members graduate and they will start 16 weeks of field training at district stations around the city. this year's class is more diverse. more than half the members have college degrees. there are five females. and the recruits range in age from 22 to 49 years old. >> all right. it is 7:20. tired of the hot weather? up next, meteorologist steve paulson will tell us about a

>> it is 7:23. actress lindsey lohan rehab troubles appear to have leveled off. tmz reports that she has checked into the betty ford center. she walked out of a different rehab center yesterday to start her 90-day rehab stint. that center was apparently not licensed for rehab. late last night, she went back to betty ford, the same place she fought with a staffer in 2010. >> the time is 7:23.

according to a real estate website, oakland is the most exciting city in america. it ranked oakland as number one ahead of other cities including new york and san francisco which by the way came in third. the website determined a list based on ten factors including the number of bars, big box stores, fast food restaurants, museums, and park acreage per person. now, while san francisco ranked high on music venues and bars, the city of oakland faired better on population diversity and museums per square mile. there's a new place where you can pick up a zip car. zip car is opening operations to many airports around the nation. san jose is one of the first places zip car is moving into. the company says they are targeting a different type of renter. it will rent to drivers as

>> it is coming up on 7:30. we continue to follow the latest development surrounding the massive wildfire burning in southern california. this is a live look at the spring fire which is burning in camarillo. bay area crews arrived this morning to help the 900 firefighters who are currently battling this 10,000 acre which is only 10% contained. you can see in the live picture the smoke very close to a home there. santa ana winds are a big concern this morning, said to be blowing at 35 miles per hour. there's also single digit humidity and temperatures climbing into the 90s. this home is just one of about 2,000 homes that are

threatened. 15 are already damaged. and parts of the pacific coast highway are shut down. again, we are continuing to monitor the situation in ventura county and we will bring you more updates during mornings on 2. meanwhile the forest service has lit a major fire hypothetically speaking in congress. the u.s. forest service is demanding that states give back nearly $18 million in federal subsidies saying that taxpayer cash is subject to automatic spending cuts. but both republicans and democrats are saying no way. they say the money was given to the states before cuts went into effect. the forest service has cut 5% of its budget. happening right now, president obama is speaking to a group of mexican students during his visit to mexico city. let's listen in.

>> we spoke words. this place that celebrates. >> it's hard to hear the president with the translator speaking over him, unless you speak spanish. he is making his remarks at the museum. after his talk with the students, the president has a meeting scheduled with mexican entrepreneurs to stress the ties between the two countries. mess co-is the second largest export market for u.s. goods and services. the president met with the president of mexico yesterday. later today he heads to costa rica with talks with central american leaders. >> we're following a new development in an early morning fatal crash on highway 24. it happened about 1:30 this morning. the chp says it involved a wrong-way driver. the ktvu news is at the county jail. the suspect just arrived there. tara. >> reporter: that's right. just minutes ago, the squad car pulled into the garage and we

noticed the suspect getting out. we were only able to see the back of her head because they shut the garage door. if we roll the video, we can show you that it happened just minutes ago when she was released from the hospital. she did not suffer any injuries we're told and now she will be booked on felony dui here at the martinez detention facility. the chp says the 20-year-old brentwood woman was driving the wrong way on highway 24 at 1:30 this morning when she slammed her silver toyota head on into this red geo metro. the damage to the victim's car was horrific, the engine completely separated from the car. the fire department had to take off the top to get the victim out. but it was too late. he died. it was near the la fayette exit. >> it took a full impact. it hit another vehicle. fortunately the other gentleman

in the other vehicle was not injured. >> reporter: a source tells us that the victim was a man around 50 years old from brentwood who could have been driving into work this morning. the chp says the female driver was spotted at the saint stevens exit driving the wrong way and it's possible that she actually drove the wrong way through the tunnel. the chp will not release the victim's name until his family has been notified. >> time now 7:34. firefighters are finally able to leave the scene of a san jose fire that started more than 13 hours ago. we want to show you video of the work that they were doing before sunrise. the crews broke apart those bails of recycled paper making sure that they were not still smoldering. families arrived for hockey practice at the nearby sharks ice. >> first i seen that it was more of a brownish red smoke. and when i seen that, i knew it

was a big fire and it was coming up over the skate stadium here. >> the firefighters worked in hot temperatures last night to get that fire under control. and the hard work paid off. it looks like they have saved the metal structure of that building. also video taken by firefighter helmet cameras late last night gives us right now an up close look at a fire fight at a catering business in brentwood. the firefighters in the newly reopened station 54 kept this fire from spreading to nearby businesses. station 54 reopened wednesday. it had been closed down because of budget cuts. >> it is 7:35. police in the south bay are trying to make sure this weekend's cinco de mayo celebrations do not get out of control. how do police plan to keep the festivities in check while letting people have a good time. >> reporter: good morning.

many people recall that the official cinco de mayo parade was canceled a few years ago because organizers couldn't pay for police. crowds are expected this weekend for the largest cinco de mayo festivities in northern california. if we go to video of last year's celebration, they celebrated peacefully. they arrested 21 people for narcotics possession, public intoxication and assault with a deadly weapon. businesses around here will be preparing for the big day and expecting cleanup afterwards as well. 2011, only 7 arrests but scattered violence throughout the night, including a stabbing, vandalism and a fight with police. police are trying to prevent repeats for that. residents hoping for the same thing. police will deploy officers from the metro unit. it is being reported that the gangs investigation unit will

be around as well as the california department of corrections and rehabilitation. keep in mind as well that some roads will be closed, including king road and also roads in east san jose. there is a hockey playoff game, the sharks are playing in a playoff game so the streets will be busy this weekend. i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> police in other bay area cities are gearing up for the cinco de mayo weekend. they will be setting up check points to make sure that drivers stay sober behind the wheel. if you plan to drink, plan ahead and designate a sober driver. public transit and cabs are also good options. >> the golden state warriors won last night and their fans are celebrating the first playoff victory in 6 years. >> wow. last night in front of 20,000

fans, the warriors beat the denver nuggets 92-88. they won the series four games to two. seth curry was just ridiculous. like watch this. so easy. led the way with 22 points. and then david lee gave the inspiration. he shocked the fans and everyone. he actually played a minute and a half. he was supposed to be out for the rest of the season with the bad hip injury. >> for me, my first playoff series win and first for the organization. so everybody is relieved to finally get it done. >> the warriors now play the san antonio spurs on monday in the second round of the playoffs. coming up for you, clay thompson and the young guy, the warriors hosted a special guest at last night's game. we will tell you how a victim of the boston marathon bombings was honored at last night's game. >> a special story. >> yeah.

>> it is 7:38. we want to check in with sal and the roads this morning. >> right now, things are actually doing well on this friday. we would hope -- we were hoping that friday would be a little lighter. it's actually doing pretty well right now on 80 westbound. 24 westbound. moderately heavy traffic coming through the tunnel into oakland. we're off to a decent start. at the bay bridge toll plaza, obviously we watch this a lot. it's one of the most important commutes. all of a sudden we filled in. last time we showed you the traffic was doing well. now it's come to a complete -- not a complete stop, but it seems to have lowed down there westbound. i'm looking on to see if there is a crash reported on the bridge somewhere. i don't see anything, but we will see. maybe at the -- it looks like westbound 80 at the s curve there is something going on. we will let you know more about that. let's move on to the south bay and the traffic here is moving along pretty well if you are driving on most bay area freeways, traffic moving along well. i looked at the bridge at the s

curve. there was a stall. that may be one of the reasons why we have slow traffic at the metering lights. 7:39. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. good. month, everybody. a little change by the coast. there was a little sea breeze but it looks like it's collapsing. a couple people tweeting. 42. nice. calm conditions. that's true. the wind is turning southwest. but it's less than 2 miles per hour over ocean beach. yesterday was north and northeast. not the case today. yesterday was the hottest day. today will be warm to hot inland. we had the downslope wind easterly breeze. warm to hot today and coastal cooling should be around 10 degrees. half moon bay shot up to 75 degrees. today they're still in the 40s. this will be the last day of the 90s for a while.

this is rare for may. there's rare weather all over the country for may. by monday, we might be talking about scattered showers in the forecast. 40s and 50s on the low. right now 50s. low 60s though. very mild from hayward over to redwood city. it's been that way for a couple weeks. mountain view, san jose, sitting at 50. i think they were 68 yesterday. that's a big difference. a west wind is trying. north wind at napa. still some reports of smoke filtering in. if you're smelling smoke, there's a component of north wind bringing in that smoke. hopefully that will turn today. 32 in minnesota. just amazing what is going on. the old records are one to four inches of snow. kansas city is 38 degrees. houston this morning was 47. tying a record low.

they may set a record low in houston tonight. for us, it will be sunny. there's no fog. and it will be warm to hot. probably a little cooler by that coast. i'm banking on the sea breeze to kick in. it's not because of the fog. 60, 70, 80s and 90s. possible records will be close but one to two degrees shy. it's still sunny at the beaches. cooling begins saturday. much cooler on sunday. and partly cloudy on monday and tuesday. >> if you haven't noticed, the dow and s&p sored through milestone numbers. we will check out wall street. why is their stock tanking this morning? several new developments in the boston marathon bombings, including where the body of a bombing suspect was moved overnight.

>> 7:44. in our continuing fire coverage this morning, a red flag warning remains in effect in southern california. ktvu's pam cook is in the news room with an update. >> reporter: it's a very tense situation in ventura county this morning. the latest update from cal fire says about 4,000 homes are still considered threatened in one of the fires down there. that is the one that is southeast of camarillo. it is one of six big firesin california right now, including the one north of calstoga. firefighters from the bay area down there as well. you can see how close that fire is burning to homes.

it has closed part of pch. this is an area between 101 and running all the way out to the ocean. pch is closed around the malibu area at this point. firefighters say like here in northern california part of the state, the weather is playing the biggest role in the fire fighting. >> now we're getting the hot, long days, winds and the low humidities and this stuff is ripe and ready to burn. we don't see this type of activity usually until august, september. >> reporter: now, we understand that fire in ventura county burned about 6500 acres in just five hours. it did start as firefighters were already working on a fire about 25 miles west of palm springs. a few other fires as well. i just want to tell you a little bit from the update from cal fire. there is a red flag warning here in northern california it looks like from shasta county

pants. the mother showed up at drew elementary school in the bay view district and then left with steven and they may have been headed to oakland. the city of san jose has proposed a financial settlement in the case of a 2-year-old killed by a falling tree. the child died after a tree fell on the family's truck in front of a home. the news reports that sit other officials are recommending a $325,000 settlement to his parents who were injured but survived the accident. the family has not commented. the city council will be asked to approve the settlement. >> a union city teacher was arrested and accused of molesting his elementary students. he is a third grade teacher at alvarado elementary. police think he victimized several 8 and 9-year-old girls. he was arrested on 17 counts of lude acts on a child and

members and now at a funeral home in new jersey. it's still not clear where it will go next. cnn reports the bombs used in deadly attack were built in the apartment that tamerlan tsarnaev shared with his wife and their child. however, investigators stress it is unclear whether the widow played any role in the bombing plot. and there's now word that the fourth of july was the original target date for the boston bombing. investigators say they had first planned to carry out a suicide attack on independence day two months from now but the date was moved up because the bombs were built faster than expected. they changed the target to the boston marathon. >> the time is 8:14. we're finding more about the security plans for the race in san francisco. the changes are in response to the boston marathon bombings. they include extra police at bart stations. police patrols at ferry

terminals. fbi agents providing assistance and using security cameras all along the race route. two weeks after that deadly fertilizer explosion in west, texas, investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the explosion. investigators are using heavy equipment and they're raking to cyst through the rubble for evidence. they have a lot of ground to cover. some of the debris was spread as far as two miles from the explosion site. 14 people were killed in that explosion. ten of those were first responders. and the death toll from the bag la bangledesh building collapse is still under investigation. the government has promised to make improvements to the

garment factories. >> 8:15. new this morning, investors are loving the report from the labor department. jobs added, unemployment lowered. here is a live look at the new york stock exchange. the dow is above 15,000 for the first time and the s&p barreled past 1600. kyla campbell is in the news room to explain why this report is not all good news. >> reporter: it has been an ex kiting morning on wall street with the positive jobs report. it took less than 60 minutes after the opening bill for the dow to reach the 15,000 mark. they credit the jobs report. the u.s. added 165,000 jobs last month. that's the best rate that we have seen since december of 2008. economists say this is an accurate reflection of the job market. that's because of the number of people that kit looking for work stayed steady there april

while 210,000 people reentered the workforce. on top of that, the labor department revised the number of jobs created in february and march. they are much higher than previously reported. now, the not so good news, economists say this report is shruggish. this is the third consecutive spring where job creation has plateaued. we are far off from when the recession hit in 2007, that's when the unemployment rate was only 4.4%. >> 8:17. an elderly cruise ship passenger is recovering after a unique coast guard delivery off the coast of california. on wednesday, the coast guard flew a transport plane from sacramento to the ship. it was about a thousand miles west of san francisco. a 68-year-old woman was suffering internal bleeding on that ship and doctors agreed to drop two units of blood by parachute to the ship.

wrong-way driver this morning is responsible for a fatal crash on highway 24. it happened about 1:30 this morning right near happy valley road in la fayette. what are investigators telling you, tara. >> reporter: the chp is blaming a wrong-way drunk driver. it is possible that she drove the wrong way through the tunnel before slamming into a car head on. about an hour ago, the suspect was taken into the martinez detention facility. she is in the process of being booked for felony dui. the chp says the 20-year-old brentwood woman was driving the wrong way on highway 24 near the exit around 1:30 this morning. she slammed her silver toyota head on into a red geo metro. the damage to the victim's car was horrific. the engine completely separated

california. bay area firefighters are in ventura county and helping to fight a huge fire in camarillo that is threatening thousands of homes. william is in camarillo with an up-close look at the fire. you also have new information about how many homes are affected. good morning, william. >> reporter: tori, we're looking now from 2,000 to now 4,000 homes are basically in danger, only 15 have been damaged or destroyed. southern california is the nation's wildfire capital, if you will. and the conditions today show you why. it is may. temperatures today will be in the 90s. yesterday, 98 in camarillo. santa ana winds up to 40 miles per hour. this is the third dryest winter on record. we only got five inches of rain. you look at the topography in the area. it's difficult tore

firefighters to fight. this is 15 square miles. they have just resumed air attacks, dropping retardant as well as water. as we said, 950 firefighters now on scene. the good news is that we're expecting better weather around 5:00 today. but right now, these fire crews are heading up into the canyons doing what they are accident putting bulldozers, building a line around the fire to stop it from spreading. of course with those kind of winds at 40 miles per hour, you get a lot of spot fires. they will try to jump on those. finally because many of the areas have not burned for decades, it may be green on the surface but underneath you have a lot of dead undergrowth and that goes up, we have seen 30, 40-foot flames. they try to slow those down before they hit the subdivision. with wildfire season, if you

have a well fed wind driven fire, you can try to slaughter it with foam, nothing is going to work. it will be futile. the only good news is that things should improve. back to you. >> thank you, william. and we also have an update on another major wildfire burning east of chico. fire crews have actually downsized the panther fire. they had originally said it burned 10,000 acres. the new number is near 6400 acres. strong winds have made it hard for firefighters to put it out. it is only 10% contained. and bay area firefighters are helping with these efforts. no structures are threatened at this time. >> back here in the bay area, overnight firefighters in the north bay made a lot of progress battling a fire north of calstoga. firefighters say the fire is now 97% contained. 125 acres have burned,

including some of the grapevines owned by kendall jackson. in the meantime fire crews are watching several other fires that started in the wine country in the past 48 hours. one was at a smaller vineyard. another one burned and a third happened west of silverado country club. all of the fires are fully contained. but firefighters want to make sure there are no flare-ups throughout the day. >> 8:34. the national weather service says budget cuts could affect its ability to give firefighters accurate forecasts just as fire season gets underway. the national weather service employees are being furloughed four days out of each four- month period start being around the fourth of july. the agency says the cut backs could make it difficult to provide firefighters on the front lines with the updated weather for of the candidates they need. authorities are trying to

make sure that cinco de mayo celebrations do not get out of control. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. even though we haven't had an official cinco de mayo parade in san jose for a couple years, still large crowds are expected this weekend and people preparing for the festivities. now, as we go to video from last year, most people are behaving themselves. police say there were a few instances, at least 21 people were arrested for narcotics possession, intoxication. they are expecting lots of cleanup after as well. two years ago there were only 7 arrests. but there was a stabbing. officers say they are increasing patrols to prevent any repeats of that.

overcrowding in prisons. it includes ideas like releasing elderly and incapacitated prisoners and slowing the return of thousands of inmates being held in private prisons in other states. california is under a court order to reduce the prison population by 9300 inmates this year. >> we want to check in with sal and see what is happening on the roads. how are things going? >> they're improving. 237 was a little bit slow earlier. we're going to look at it now. it's a little slow right here. but just down the road it gets better. the whole commute into the sunnyvale region has not been as bad as we usually see it. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge. that's about a 10 to 15-minute delay. it's backed up to the overcrossing. it's improving a little bit from the last time we saw it. we spoke of sunnyvale. a little slow getting into mountain view. let's go to steve. >> another quiet pattern here.

sheriff's department collect the evidence in the murder case of layla fowler. three potential leads have evaporated, including a one- time witness who recounted her earlier story. she was a third grader who was stabbed to death at her home about a week ago. and search and rescue crews are busy looking for a missing teenager this morning in danville. claudine wong has been on the story since 4:30 this morning. she is back at the headquarters where extra crews came in about 45 minutes ago. >> reporter: that's right. they're getting ready to head out at the designated search areas. we are at the command post this morning. you see folks taking off. they have been briefed and they will head out to specific areas. some of these areas we're told are high probability areas. some have been searched before and will be searched again. i did talk to one of the coordinators who said and i asked if they have been getting

more calls in. they said not a lot. certainly when i talked to this little girl's mother she said that was one message out to the public. if you know anything, please give police a call. i want to show a picture of the 15-year-old. this is maddie. she lives five minutes from where we're standing. she is 130 pounds. reddish brown hair. last seen leaving her house about 5:30 last night. we don't know the exact circumstances of why she left, what may have been happening. all we're told is that her emotional state is unknown. and certainly her family was concerned enough to call police. she called police around 6:00 p.m., the mother. and then about 9:00 p.m., danville police called in help from the search and rescue team. we want to show you video that we have been watching all morning long. they searched yesterday. they had helicopters up and dogs out. they searched through the night, about 45 people out and about. we saw them in cars, on foot.

and then around 4:30 this morning. they took a break and suspended the search. at 7:00 this morning, they started ramping it up again. this is a volunteer organization and they're waiting for fresh recruits to come in. if you look at the command post, you can see the search and rescue crews. they have 200 volunteers on the roster who have undergone training. they put the call out and said get here whenever you can. we will take the help. then they put them into the trailer and show them the maps. you see the trailer, they have maps up and they basically grid out the areas that they need to search, brief the folks and they head out to tackle the locations. we are expect being the police chief out here shortly. they're the lead agency on all of this. we expect the chief to be talking soon. we have not seen him yet. we were told that he would be out here 15 minutes ago. we expect him out here any minute. we will have a full report for

you coming up on channel 2 news at noon. claudine wong, channel 2 news. >> 8:47. oakland mayor is renewing her efforts to reduce the city's number of officer-involved shootings. she proposes more training, an updated expect system and an independent police auditor like the one in san jose. the auditor would review complaints against officers since the year 2000. there have been at least 117 people shot by police, 39 of those shootings were fatal. investigators say a deadly officer-involved shooting may have been a case of suicide by cop. witnesses reported seeing a man holding a gun at a popular public boat ramp yesterday afternoon. police say he appeared upset and refused to drop his weapon. officers say he made a threatening gesture at police and that's when several officers opened fire. investigators will not identify the officer, but it's believed

that they're fairfield police. we just received the first pictures of a developing story involving a american military plane crashing in central asia. this morning the kc135 tanker crashed. this is new video from the scene. the crash site is heavily charred. the u.s. plane reportedly broke into three pieces. and we're now told there were three people on board. there is no word yet on their conditions. a person who lives near the area says the plane exploded in flight and he saw the sky on fire. the plane had just taken off from the u.s. air base when it went down in a remote mountain area. >> the time is 8:49. back here at home, the early start of the fire season has fire departments scrambling up and down the state making sure they're ready. >> we continue to get updates

from cal fire and individual fire departments here in the bay area. there is a huge response to the fires burning, particularly the one in ventura county. we want to take you live down to woodside. what is going on is a big drill. there are 13 units that sent strike teams down to southern california, including three from san mateo county. now, this morning, all of those folks down in woodside, the fire protection district are hosting a fire drill to get ready for what could be a particular leah bad fire season. >> we're at high risk, very high risk. a lot of them choose not to believe it or not to accept that fact. we haven't had a fire here before, like southern california or northern california has, but i remind them the firesin santa cruz, we're at the same risk as they
