san francisco. these are live pictures in -- excuse me this is in an jose. this is a field in san jose. we're working to get an exact location. we can tell you this is very close to a housing development here. you can see this fire continues to spread right now. it just talked to our chief meteorologist. about 88 degrees down there, light winds, humidity at 14%. there you see the home and other buildings in the back ground. maureen naylor is on the phone right now. maureen where are you and how close are you to the fire and where exactly is this fire? >> frank, i was talking to a san jose police officer, i can tell you i am standing right next to the field you're looking at. fire fighters are currently on the scene grabbing their hoses. just to give you an idea, we're on quimby road. and this field that i'm presuming you're looking at is just south of east ridge mall a popular mall here at san jose. the fire started in this build. it appears to be about i'm
6:15 pm
guesstimatina about an acre. san jose fire have arrived. roughly it's 88 degrees and currently a ton of smoke is filling the air. there's a ton of people that have gathered who are looking at the fire. fire tpaeulgters are just starting to get their -- firefighters are just starting to get their hoses on the fire. >> it appears that this fire is not far from a lot of buildings which look like homes. >> yeah, frank that's right. like i said, the most population also you have the mall, you have across the street. this is very close in proximity. i think you're seeing on the other side there's homes. firefighters, we were talking to them earlier and they were concerned about the hot weather. we actually spotted this fire long before firefighters were on it. we were up looking down the valley when we saw the smoke start to rise. it started light and then as we were driving here it got
6:16 pm
thicker, denser, and black. we were concerned as we were driving toward the mall. but when we got here it was a little bit of a relief. when we got here it looks to be just a field. i can't see any homes where i'm standing. >> maureen, it's julie. we were watching these pictures and it started as a small plume. it looks like it's grown quite a bit in the last few minutes. resources have been stretched thin because of all the firefighters in the north bay and firefighters helping in southern california. from where you are does it appear to be blowing smoke. >> it appears to be blowing significantly south. the area is charred. we saw large flaming burns but it has since moved south of here. i did see an active flame from where i'm standing. to the left i see a significant amount of firefighters and black smoke is starting to go
6:17 pm
up. it appears that the fire is doing something because it just got darker. this seems to be a very fast moving fire. since we arrived here about four minutes ago it has already moved significantly down this piece of property. >> maureen, bill martin in the weather center. >> maureen, bill martin has a question for you. we want to update viewers if they're just joining us. this fire just broke out in east san jose not far from east ridge mall. in east san jose, it started out as a brush fire. we checked with our meteorologist bill martin who says the winds in the area are relatively calm. about 88 degrees, 14 miles per hour. here is bill martin with the conditions there. >> we had the high fire danger. the heat advisory yesterday. things are dried up. in this fire zone area we're looking at live pictures. i can tell you the temperatures in this area about 87 degrees right now. the relative humidity is running any where from 13 to 15%. now that's pretty low. now maureen mentioned the winds
6:18 pm
and the smoke. there is some breeze out there. this fire is creating a lot of its own wind. the winds near the fire are any where from 15 to 16-miles-an- hour and they're coming from the west northwest. that's the hire humidity direction. that's a cooler direction. that makes sense because when you look at the smoke plume it's blowing south down toward morgan hill. south toward morgan hill. hey maureen from where we can see. it looks like the terrain is fairly flat where the fire is burning. there's hills in the background but it's a flat terrain is that correct? >> that's correct. it's really interesting you're talking about the winds because it wasn't fairly windy earlier but it seems to be in this area of the fire. it is some what gusty and you've seen the smoke moving. you may be able to see from the live pictures i've been seeing live active flames in kind of the east side of this. >> maureen when a fire gets going like this. it gets so hot right. all that air starts to rise. the cooler air that's coming out of the northwest will rush
6:19 pm
into that. the prevailing winds are not out of the control which is good news for firefighters. >> from bill what you were saying in these pictures, can you tell it appear it is fire is burning away from. it looks like we were seeing a power structure here and it's aw earlier does it appear to be moving away from the shopping center and away from homes? >> i can tell you it is moving away from eastern ridge mall. currently in front of me i'm looking 200 yards away from me. i just saw the clouds and smoke and flames. we're talking about 12 firefighters in the area. this is consuming dry grass in the area. however there are some homes not too far away. i'm actually at a structure, there are structures surrounding about 200 yards away from where the flames are currently building. >> maureen, what you can't see, we have access here to news chopper 2 and you can see here that these flames they are very close not only to a road. to power lines but also to a
6:20 pm
number of homes. they are basically right up on the back door of this home. we saw a couple of homeowners throwing something. i'm not exactly what they were doing. but there are a lot of very nervous people right now in that east san jose area. have you heard at all of any evacuations i would have to think that at some point here, they are going to have to evacuate these neighborhoods. >> that's a good point. at this point i have not heard of anything. i'm standing on the north side of this fire. it is moving south toward those homes. we're hoping to talk to homeowners near by. the fire is moving south. these firefighters are standing here they're letting it move that way in that direction. a lot of times their goal is to get a perimeter around this and let it burn out. from my angle they are just standing here. >> maureen, as i'm standing here looking at it from chopper 2. what we notice it is a grass
6:21 pm
fire. this fire is moving on the ground. looks like from what we can tell, not crowning. you don't want those fires to get up on a psychiatry and start a crown fire. this appears to be running along the ground within dry brush. hopefully that will help firefighters and maybe that's why they're going to let it run itself out. >> seems to be spanning out. >> i was just going to add, capital expressway is probably what you see. people commute between east san jose and other freeways in this area. you're right we have seen it move along the ground. and it's moving fast along the expressway. >> see what i'm seeing right now along news chopper 2, we're seeing a housing complex to the right of the screen. seems like the road or the highway on the left part of the screen creating a break.
6:22 pm
but it does not appear to be creating a break and perhapses pushes the flames to the house -- perhaps pushing the flames to the housing development. >> do you have access to any firefighters that can give us an update on if they're getting this under control. >> i'm getting close to a police officer, i am going to ask him. i'm going to work my way around the mall where the burning has already happened. that's where i'm told an officer is. this is some what surreal watching dark smoke. all of a sudden flair ups, flames. i'm going to try to get this police officer here. excuse me -- >> what maureen is describing here, is how quickly it's moving. it's on a dry field. in fires with a 10-mile an hour wind they move quick. you've seen how dry the brush is. we've been doing stories on it the last couple of days.
6:23 pm
i don't see any fires moving into the tree tops. if we had the fire in the trees now with the wind. it can jump over the road much easily. i don't see a lot of ground crews yet and i don't see any air support there. >> i haven't seen any yet. >> yeah i haven't seen any which is surprising. from what we can tell and in some ways that's a lot better than running in dry terrain with a lot of trees. see how it burns itself out here. firefighters may have a plan here. they know which way the wind is blowing. >> just in case somebody is just joining. this is a grass fire that is burning toward east san jose not far from the east ridge mall. let's go to maureen naylor who's with a police officer. >> reporter: i want to bring you live toe a -- you live to a san jose police officer that's
6:24 pm
in the area. what can you tell us about concerns to homes and business. >> there's no concern for homes or businesses, we have firefighters in the entire area. >> reporter: can you give me an idea of where they're working on. >> we just started in the northern part of next to east ridge expressway. people started calling and saying there was a fire. >> reporter: lastly, i know you have to go. are you saying these winds are causing the fire to bring the fire up. thank you for your time. you mentioned the helicopter over head. it appears to be a helicopter now flying over surveying the area. you just heard the police officer say, they do not appear to have any businesses or homed threatened at this point and they're trying to get around
6:25 pm
it. >> that's pretty remarkable. because when you look at these pictures you can see just how close these flames are to the houses. but obviously, those firefighters on the scene, those police on the scene know what they're dealing with and that is great news when they say that no homes even though the flames are that close, no homes or businesses are threatened. >> we're looking at the first live pictures, you can see the ground crews very tiny there at the base of that smoke. maureen just said along with san jose fire department. calfire with air response coming to this fire. you see air response working the flames on the ground. >> let's go to our newsroom now. gasia mikaelian is in the newsroom. working to get some more information, gasia what do you have? >> frank at this point, i've been monitoring social media. i put a call out, asking anyone for information in the area in san jose and east san jose that
6:26 pm
you've been focusing on to give us a call and tell us. because as you've been reporting it does appear this fire is happening near homes in the area. we put the call out and if anyone there is able to share with us what they are seeing and smelling. i believe our chief meteorologist bill martin says it's drifting south ward. this is something that a lot of people are certainly seeing and certainly smelling on a day like today at the end of a week where we've been talking about wile fires fires -- about wildfires up in the north. now it appears to have hit the south bay. this of course is the first relatively big fire that we've been reporting in the south bay. even before today, you will remember that our robert honda has been reporting for us how calfire crews were on alert because of this hot dry weather. that they called in their crews because of the conditions that we've been experiencing and detailing for you this week. so at this point we're still waiting to hear from people who are experiencing this fire.
6:27 pm
we've been getting firsthand reports. as soon as we get reports we will bring them to you here. >> you are sure that there are people smelling and seeing the smoke the plumes because it's really spread across a large area. bill has been talking about that for some time bill. >> what's interesting frank and julie, they usually issue a spare the air day, because of the inversion. because of the warmth we've had the atmosphere has really capped highly. if you look at the upper right of your screen. you see how tight to the ground that is. that inversion is squishing it down. going to what you folks have been talking about. the people downwind is going to be getting a doze, a particular matter. it's right down on the ground. folks that are bothered perhaps
6:28 pm
by asthma or respiratory issues you know it looks like down toward evergreen as that smoke heads south. folks are going to start to notice that. >> as that smoke apt to stay put because there's not a lot of wind actually pushing it away and cleaning out the air. >> i think so julia. i mean it's windy as maureen pointed out. it's breezy out there and there's some wind which is good. i think you're right. that smoke is going to pick up a bit and that causes some folks an issue. >> we heard the police officer interviewed him live just a moment ago saying that at this point despite what you're looking at here they are not concerned about homes and businesses in the area being threatened though. obviously causing traffic in this area. >> exactly frank, and i have a bunch of friend that are firefighters and i always ask them about fires because we always deal with that in the area. if we have something in the
6:29 pm
brush, and it's weeds. they know they get the fire breaks and set up. it's not in the trees, it's not what you look for. it's not in the eucalyptus trees. it's a grass fire. we don't have a great deal of information in the fire. but from what we can see impressively it looks like these guys are getting a handle on it. >> a factor too that it's flat terrain. it's not hilly, it's not steep. they can get around it and get the perimeter that they need to knock it down. as we said it's an early start to fire season we've been talking about it all week with the hot weather and we've had fires now basically erupting all over the north bay, east bay, and now south bay. this fire started just around 6:00 tonight. the brush fire is in east san jose started very close to the east ridge mall. shopping mall down there and it's been spanning out. but we were talking with maureen naylor who talked to a police officer. they say it doesn't appear to be threatening any homes because of those roads that are
6:30 pm
creating a perimeter around it. >> you mentioned in the issue with the smoke, the top right shot with the, that's the inversion. if you're just underneath that and you're in one of those homes, even if you don't have respiratory problems it's bothering you. >> it is 6:30 and we are obviously staying on long here on ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 because of this breaking news. grass fire going on right now in san jose. it is very close to a housing development there in east san jose not far from the east ridge mall and the reed hill view airport. but we interviewed a police officer just a couple of moments ago and they said at this point they're not worried about this fire threatening buildings or homes. let's go to gasia once again in the newsroom. gasia, you're hearing some chatter here on social network. >> i put the call out on my facebook page. so far i have
