bay area fire crews had their hands full again tonight as california's fire season gets off to an early and active start. good evening i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. tense moments in the south bay as firefighters work to contain a fire. that fire burned near east ridge mall, qunby road and the capital expressway. chief meteorologist bill martin is going to tell us why there's a new red flag warning going up tonight. we begin with ktvu's maureen

naylor. she actually spotted the fire and arrived as the fire crews were arriving. >> reporter: the engines behind me are going to remain here throughout the night sitting on top of a burned area. also earl littler tonight we spoke to some residents who positioned themselves in the line of firearmed with garden hoses. our cameras started when the fire be be -- began with white smoke. the fire started consuming the dry grass. san jose firefighters grabbed their gear and headed into the fire. they were soon dwarfed by this wall of smoke and flames. this family was in the middle of a kung-fu lesson. >> we were told to evacuate suddenly when we saw a huge

plume. >> initially we saw a wall. >> it looks kind of like the end of the world to me. >> reporter: the flames threatened mobile homes. >> the flames started coming at you. there's no place to be. so we got the hose, there were 10 of us spraying water. >> reporter: several fires burn here each summer but never this big or this early. >> because of how dry it is. this looked like it was a timber box early on. >> tonight the cause of the fire is being investigated. >> just prior to the 911 call, there was a firefighters who had just loaded up his truck when the fire came in. >> reporter: some residents suffered smoke inhalations but were treated and released. maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now at san jose's alan rock park restrictions are in place because of the high fire

danger. as the sign says smoking, bar-b- que and open fires are banned. the brush is very dry so any of those items can spark it. >> reporter: napa tied a record for this date at 92 degrees. san jose also tied a record at 90. downtown oakland also established a record at 86. and san francisco 79 degrees. red flag warning is set to take effect a few hours from now. the alert is set to begin at midnight, it will expire at 3:00 tomorrow afternoon. and with temperatures cooling. you say why red flag warning because temperatures are dropping you may have not --

noticed that today and tomorrow. that red flag warning for elevations above 1,000 feet. in these areas around san helena and napa we could see 40 to 50-mile an hour winds tonight. that red flag warning for the north bay hills. you can see winds in the hills but not the advisory criteria. we will be watching it for you. it's 58 in napa, so the cool mornings there has moved in but that's going to be push aid way by this very strong wind. red flag warning in the north bay. we have records today. it was a spare the air day today. when i come back we're going to talk about the mayor cooling and the red flag warning that will occur in a few hours. take a look at the air as the sun was setting.

officials issued a same day spare the air alert at about 1:00 this afternoon. typically those alerts are announced a day in advance so people are aware ahead of time. smoke from the north and heat were the cause of that warning. a springs fire is burning. if flames still threaten up to 400 homes tonight. evacuations have been ordered for several neighborhoods. more than 1000 firefighters are fighting this blaze. >> we stocked up, what it bode s for us is what the rest of the year has and if we're going to wear people out.

to our north, firefighters are trying to gain an upper hand on the panther fire. it's burning in chico. this fire is burning in a remote area. right now officials say it's only 20% contained. and in sonoma county the so called yellow fire is fully contained tonight. the fire burned 525 acres since starting wednesday morning northwest of calastoga. calfire says it's going to patrol the area for the next several dayless. bay area fire departments roll out to help fight fires across the state. we asked if that leaves crews here lacking support. caltrans service was delayed after a commuter train hit a car in mountain view. it happened about 5:30. a southbound caltrain hit a car. caltrain says no one was in the

car and it's not clear if the driver jumped out at the last second. the car wound up against a ball right in the middle of the street. no one on the train was injured either. police shut down ranstore for more than an hour. and the bay area is in competition against miami to host the 2015 title game. the nfl has told miami it needs those renovations if it wants to be considered. santa clara's mayor says he is not counting miami out but he is confident about their bid. >> you know i have a high amount of hope not because we will be the only one standing but because we are standing strong.

>> and santa clara will talk to the nfl owners. marino is honorary coach of south florida super bowl bid committee. and u.s. stock markets hit a high today. the dow hit a new records closing up 142 points after breaking through the 15,000 level for the first time ever. the nasdaq was up 38 and the s & p500 also hit a new all time high closing above 1,600. the boost followed a labor department report showing u.s. employers added 165,000 jobs last month. that sent the national unemployment rate down .1 to 7- 1/2%. it hasn't been that low in seven years. the one downfall is that the gains were in lower paying

dramatic new visit -- video of a four plex on fire. these videos were taken by a viewer about 4:00. the fire started when a stove caught fire while cooking dinner. two units were severely damaged two more suffered smoke damage. the fire ended up displacing eight adults and three children. a battalion chief said the closest fire house was closed because of rolling brown outs and that might have caused a slight delay on their response time. leaders of a church are upset about a member was robbed at a bus shelter literally

right across the street on 85th avenue and international boulevard. only on 2, jana katsuyama has their cry for help and tells us what happened when she investigated who's responsible for maintaining those shelters. jana. >> reporter: and frank that might surprise you. these ac transit bus shelters are all throughout the city. but the church leaders say they want the one closest to them torn down. it has turned into a sex magment, a toilet and even people having sex behind the wall. we saw people loitering who never boarded buses. an eye store for the temple across the street. the church sent us this video from the bus station. they say a woman was waiting for the bus and was robbed.

bufford says the shelter has become a cover for criminals. >> people are selling drugs and defecating and fornicating and all types of things right at this bus stop. >> reporter: church members are often confronted by confronting scenes such as one man today. >> reporter: he was out here with his private parts out earlier. we could see him from right over there from the church windows. we complained to ac transit, we've complained to the city. >> reporter: but reverend bufford says no one has responded. >> they obviously help to keep people dry and to some extent warm during our cold weather months. also even during the hot weather months they provide some shade. >> reporter: what we learned though is ac transit does not actually own the shelters they told us it was the city's job. but when we went to the city a spokeswoman said it's not their responsible either. oakland signed a deal with clear channel which owns and

maintains the shelters. >> we don't need the shelter here. we don't need these advertisements here. >> reporter: i called clear channel late today to get some answers but i have not hard back. meantime ac transit people do tell me they have asked the sheriff's office to do extra patrols around the bus stop to try to improve the situation for now. oakland police and the fbi seized drugs, cash and illegal assault weapons while serving several illegal search warrants. firearms, high capacity ammunition magazines, cash and heroin with a street value of at least $30,000 were also recovered. several people were arrested. last week more than 200fbi agents and oakland police

officers descended on the area. reports say israel targeted weapons, storage facilities. an israeli government official would only say that the israel is committed to deterring the transferring of weapons to hezbollah. we now know the cause of death of boston bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev. a massachusetts funeral home released the death certificate. it says that he died of gunshot wounds to the torso. tamerlan's body was sent to a different funeral home after

protesters showed up to the funeral home he was sent to yesterday. parents of a victim gave thanks to supporters. 12-year-old aaron hern was severely injured while standing near the finish line waiting for his home who was running in the race. the family returned home to martinez three days ago. >> he wants to go to a movie with his friends. he wants to, he wants to hang out with his friend. he wants to get back to his supports. he wants to make sure he finishes school. he's worried about his grades. i mean, yeah he's ready to be aaron again. >> the herns were guest of the golden state warriors at last night's play off game in oakland. they got to meet some of the players and coach jackson. the team is headed to the second round of the nba play offs against the san antonio

police evacuated homes after report of a suspicious man triggered a call to the bomb squad. police say they detained a man at a carport around 12:45 this afternoon. the bomb squad was called because of what police say is a suspicious object or substance. no explosives were found and the neighborhood was reopened around 4:30 this afternoon. a rare case of typhoid fever has turned out in san

francisco. ktvu health and science editor john fowler tells us who should get tested. >> reporter: it happened at the stone sound galleria nordstrom stores. customers who ate at the cafe may have been exposed by the city's first ever food handler with typhoid fever. >> it's kind of a scary thing because i came in here with just innocently to have a sandwich. >> reporter: robin savage contacted med on facebook. she said she had a sandwich and drink one of those days. >> i started getting abdomen cramping and flu symptoms and it lasted for two days. >> reporter: most cases are mild and antibiotics affective. >> in some cases people can become very sick without treatment and potentially die. >> reporter: the worker acquired typhoid fever overseas. he worked on april 16, 17, 18, 20 and 27th.

symptoms which can include diarrhea and fever can the -- can take up to three weeks but may last for eight weeks. nordstrom is offering free testing and treatment to its customers. john fowler, ktvu news. just last night we had numbers showing that crime was up not only inside the station but in the areas surrounding it as well. richmond police say they took four suspects into custody last night and all four are very young. >> those suspects were 12, two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old. and their ages are very concerning that people that young would be out at 2:00 in the morning. richmond's police chief is said to meet with transit to

response helped firefighters get the upper hand on a fire in glen dale. evacuations were ordered for parts of two neighborhoods in glen dale. firefighters say the quick response to the fire has kept the flames from encroaching on homes. the fire ended up burning 75 acres no injuries were reported. fire crews for the bay area are headed out to help with wildfires burning in both northern and southern california. a strike team of five engines and 22 fire fighters left from newark. we asked if that could put a strain on local resources if or when fires threaten the bay area. >> we can't. we can't. and i'm not sure what depth we've gone to at this point but right now the need is down south. we have a contingency for maintaining services in the bay area as well. >> the agency jammed five days of training into less than

guilty for putting sleeping medication into toddlers sippy couples. another employee saw grant putting pulls into the cup. investigators say grats admitted to putting the sleeping aids in those cups. she's due to be sentenced july 5th. alameda county prosecutors say they will not file charges against a teacher who is accused of tieing up a student. the girl's parents have filed lawsuit. the suit claims the former teach used masking tape to tie up the daughters hands and feet when the child refused to take a nap. in news of the world tonight in costa rica president obama arrived in san jose today as part of his three day latin american trip. he met with president laura

chinchila. mr.obama is also meeting with several other central american leaders. the violence that is plaguing that region is expected to be at the top of their agenda. the president is set to return home late tomorrow. in the central asian nation, an american refueling plane crashed into the mountains. three crew members on board. there were three crew members on board. witnesses said the plane exploded in midair. the plane was returning to an american base from a refueling mission for the war in afghanistan. earlier this week a 747 cargo plane crashed in afghanistan killing seven people on board. and in italy, police say they caught 29 baggage handlers red handed stealing. police set up seven cameras on the baggage holes. and this is video of the thefts. it was called operation clean holds and it was carried out over a year at eight airports. police say they were responding to a number of complaints about

a driver not old enough to legally drink is facing drunk driving charges. police say the young woman behind the wheel was driving the wrong way on a major freeway. >> reporter: the impact was so great the engine separated from the victim's geo metro. cruz was killed instantly. he was a 54-year-old father of two sons. >> i just wish i could tell him i love him one more time. >> reporter: the suspected drunk driver was traveling east on westbound highway 24 in the central l exit and was hit head

said to make her first court appearance next week, rob roth ktvu news. a van carrying three people failed to stop at the bottom of twin peaks boulevard and smashed into a home. it happened around 10:20 this morning when the road ends on clarendon avenue. the driver of the van went airborne and slammed into the garage. the driver was checked out for pain. two passengers were not hurt. police say the homeowners prized car an aston martin was damaged when the van punched a hole in that garage. police have released two sketches of a man who they say groped two female joggers. police say in both attacks the man ran past the victims then turned around and groped their rear end. the man ran off each time. the sketches are different but police say they believe that the same man is responsible for both of those attacks. the city of walnut creek is

governor brown submitted a plan that may still leave him facing contempt charges. those judges wanted a plan to reduce prison overcrowding by 10,000 inmates but governor brown's proposal is about 7,000 inmates. that may mean governor brown may have to release inmates before they complete their sentences. we're taking a up close look at the area of the bay bridge that houses those broken bolts. tom vacar got special access and tells how close engineers are to finding a fix. >> reporter: it's a 30-foot down climb with only 5 feet of head way over water 200 feet below. here quite literally where the road above attaches to the water below is the bolt key. and these are the bolts that have caused so much trouble. as you can see almost no

clearance to pull them out. these defective bolts have been abandoned and engineers are putting together a fix. >> we're going to be announcing through the oversight committee next wednesday. we're literally on the verge of that. the bolts are holding down maximum strength. instruments and engineers will determine if these bolts will be replaced in necessary will be. if they come up with a compromise or soon will break. so what if allegations in thousands of other bolts were banned for bridge use. >> these bolts are allowed by the national standard which is asama54 standard. they've met the retirements of those standards and those standards does allow for

galvanizization. >> reporter: tom vacar, ktvu news. a group of hawaii fishermen want the hump back whale removed from the endangered list. the fishermen said there are now more than 21,000 huffer backs. in the 1950s there were 14,000. if they are removed there will still be protections in place for the hump back. pope francis named the new bishop for oakland. he is reverend michael barber. he will be named bi-p bi -- bishop of the archdiocese of oakland. pepsi says it's cutting ties with rapper little wayne.
