wong. i'm mike mibach. another warm morning. let's talk about the here and now swre. high fire danger for our north bay hills lasting till 3:00 this afternoon. it's warm out there already. 60s and 70s in our hills. the gusts are picking up this morning. expected to be at their strongest between now and 10:00 or so. relative humidity will remain low for most of the day. this to be aware of. it includes areas like st. helena. if you're going to be hiking maybe later today, use extra caution. big changes are coming by the afternoon. many of us are going to feel it. i'll show you the numbers expected for today, even a possibility of maybe a few sprinkles coming our way. more on that coming up. we are following developing news for you this morning. the fire danger continues to keep crews busy across the bay area. right now crews are fighting a brushfire along alpine road

near the san mateo-santa clara county border. the first call went out around 5:50 this morning. there's no word yet on the cause or site of the fire but the grass and brush in that area has been extremely dry and vulnerable to fire. an update to the breaking news story in the south bay we first reported last night. firefighters report a small flare-up this morning from that 30-acre fire near the eastridge shopping center in east san jose. the flames and smoke covered a large open field yesterday. the original fire threatened nearly a hundred nearby mobile homes. >> it's fire. and, like, it looks kind of like the end of the world to me. >> the cause of that fire is still under investigation. investigators say a contractor cutting the brush to prevent fires was finishing up when that blaze began. some of the residents of the mobile home park were treated for smoke inhalation. this morning's flare-up is the first since yesterday and they

are keeping a close watch to make sure there won't be any more. as rosemary mentioned at the top, a red flag warning has been issued for the north bay hills about a thousand feet. red flags have been raised alerting people of the danger. gusty off shore winds and low humidity. it's expected to expire at 3:00. just in time the santa rosa fire department today will celebrate the reopening of to fire stations temporarily closed due to brownouts. station 10 on corporate center parkway and station 11 on lewis road were closed on a rotating basis due to budget cuts. firefighters have been splitting time between the stations and filling in at other firehouses across the city but a federal grant is allowing santa rosa to hire additional firefighters and keep those stations open full- time. the reopening ceremony and open house for station 11 is between 11:00 this morning and 12:30 today. station 10 ceremony will run from 12:30 this afternoon till 2:00 p.m. restrictions are in place

at a popular recreation area in san jose due to the high fire danger. alan rock park has posted signs banning smoking, barbecue and open fires. a spark could ignite the dry brush. the fire season is hitting southern california hide. the springs fire is threatening thousands of homes across the california coast. we have the very latest on damage and containment. katie. >> reporter: so far 25 outbuildings have been destroyed. fortunately at this point only a handful of homes have been damaged but i did just check with the cal fire incident information page and the fire is only 30% contained and still threatens around 4,000 homes. fighting the springs fire is an uphill battle for the more than 900 firefighters on scene. the wildfires burning out of control in ventura county northwest of los angeles. it started thursday. the cause is still under investigation. the latest report from cal fire

says it's grown to 28,000 acres and still threatens some of the most scenic and expensive real estate on the west coast. drought stricken landscape and high population make this fire particularly dangerous. >> over the last 50 years, the population of the american southwest has quadrupled. so there are more and more housing developments. there are more and more communities in harm's way. meanwhile crews have nearly knock out a 75-acre brushfire in glendale. you're looking at overnight video of that fire. people from around 3,000 homes evacuated as crews quickly attacked the fire with water dropping helicopters. the high fire danger in the state has crews stretched thin. coming up in our 8:00 hour, i'll have more on the local crews in southern california and how that may impact us here at home. live in the newsroom, ktvu channel 2 news. firefighters are also trying to gain the upper hand of the panther fire burning to

the north. the wildfire has burned more than 6600 acres northeast. no one has been hurt but it's 20% contained. we are going to be keeping an eye on the fires in the bay area and the rest of california all through the morning. you can also always find more information on ktvu.com. in overnight news, oakland police found a body in the oakland estuary. they located a man about 3:30 this morning on a pier near jack london square. the man's wife told police her husband cleans boats working underneath them often. she called 911 when he did not come home last night. right now police say there are no signs of foul play but the investigation continues. new this morning, the chp is investigating the cause of a fatal accident in santa rosa. it happened just before 5:00 this morning on river road. highway patrol says the driver of an suv lost control and hit a tree. chp has not said if alcohol was a factor.

this morning police are continuing their search for suspects after a shooting in east oakland. it happened around 9:00 last night on 96th avenue and burke street. police say one person was hurt and taken to the hospital. no word on their condition. an oak -- and oakland police are questioning a man suspected of having a gun at the city's first friday event. someone told police they saw an armed man walking in the crowd last night. police say when they spotted that manual, he ran off and -- man, he ran off and tried to get rid of the gun. he was eventually caught and taken into custody. no one was hurt during the incident. security has been tight at first friday events since the shooting death of 18-year-old chiante campbell killed in february just as a first friday event was wrapping up. organizers made several changes. they banned alcohol from the event, ended it an hour earlier and made the event smaller, taking it from ten blocks to seven. the bay area looks like a good bed to host super bowl 50. the big game in 2016 will either be held at the new stadium in santa clara or sun

life stadium in miami but the florida state legislature adjourned yesterday without considering a proposal to spend $350 million in renovations. the n.f.l. told miami the upgrades were needed in order to be considered for that super bowl. while santa clara's mayor doesn't think the bay area is a lock, he says he's pretty optimistic. >> it is a regional bid. it really is a model for how i think we should work together on large events like this, whether it's the super bowl or the olympics, we can't be beat. >> the n.f.l. owners will vote between miami and the bay area may 21. hp pavilion will be rocking tomorrow night as playoff hockey makes its wray back to the bay area. game three between the san jose sharks and vancouver canucks set for 7:00. what a thrilling game two last night up north. down 2-1, under a minute to go, sharks with an empty net and patrick stick it is in the net to overtime. there we go. about five and a half minutes

in, rocky torres scores on a 2- 1 break away. sashes win 3 -- sharks win 3-2. they're twowp games in the best of seven -- they're up two games in the best of seven series. hot day today but maybe a little cooler. doesn't matter because the winds can still be cooler than it was yesterday and fire danger is high there in the north bay. >> you're right. but some additional good news. the system that's going to bring us a bit of a cooldown is going to change our flow and we're going to see an on shore flow take over later today. that means a cooler, moist pacific air and that is good news for those firefighters. good news for all of us really. giving you a look outside our doors and into oakland this morning, linking up with most -- waking up with mostly sunny skies. temperatures a lot like yesterday within a few degrees. some of us slightly cooler. some of us slightly warmer. i want to start out with the winds because notice where we reside, most of the winds are calm. fairfield, you do have a northerly breeze at about 16 miles per hour. but generally light. you can see around the bay area. it's in the hills where the winds are gusting.

in the north bay, hawk eye reporting 39 mile per hour gust near st. helena i'm seeing 20 mile per hour gust. mt. diablo reporting 50 mile per hour gust. we're looking out the door thinking it's not windy out there but it's very breezy in the hills and very dry. so that red flag warning again for the north bay hills lasting until the afternoon. 76 already in fairfield with that northerly breeze blowing. 70 in antioch. 50s around the bay. 57 in oakland. 54 san fran. 56 san francisco. a cool morning in half moon bay. half moon bay dealing with a little bit of patchy fog. so i'm seeing signs of that change. in fact the coast saw a bit of a cooldown yesterday. more of that cooling is coming our way for this afternoon. pacific satellite view, here's the system here. notice it's already to the east of us. but it's going to pull back. it's going to move back towards the west. atypical but not completely out of the question. that's exactly what it's going to do. as it moves across california a little later today, haven'tly going to slide up the coast.

good morning to you a live look from ktvu over the oakland estuary. san francisco there in the backdrop. we have patchy fog entering the bay, a sign there of cooling to come. there is new development in the boston marathon bombing case. we're live from boston where a local funeral home director says no cemetery is willing to bury one of the suspects in the attack. peter? >> reporter: that's right. none of the cemeteries in the entire state. the funeral operator out in worcester, massachusetts, about an hour from where i'm standing here. he agreed to do the final arrangements for tamerlan tsarnaev because he says everybody deserve as dignified burial and he thinks he's doing his job the same way the doctors did saving the other bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev did their jobs when

they saved him. so the entire neighborhood is outraged. there have been protests. he called every cemetery in massachusetts. they all said no. so he doesn't know where tamerlan is going toandz up being -- to end up being buried. what we know is the cause of death, it was a violent death just like tsarnaev's victims because the immediate cause was gunshot wounds to the torso and extremities and blunt trauma to the head and the torso. so there's a lot -- aside if that funeral home director, there's a lot of sorrow -- rather, there's a lot of anger following his body from stop to stop but here in copley square, almost three weeks later, still a lot of sorrow. back to you. >> talked about the cause of death. we understand there is another autopsy that may be double. can you talk a little bit about -- may be done. can you talk a little bit about that? >> reporter: there are some reports that the family wants to wait to bury them if they

can ever find a place to bury them until they have an independent autopsy because as the parents said, they reject all of the stories that have been coming out about their son. we're not sure again the status of that if they're going to be able to find anybody to do it. something else we've been hearing a little bit about tied to the tsarnaev family is the widow of tamerlan, the older brother who's dead, katherine russell, we're now hearing that she spoke to her husband tamerlan on the phone after the bombings and she e-mailed him something with an attachment and the belief is that attachment might be the -- a photograph of the f.b.i. most wanted poster with his face on it. so sources close to her say she is assisting authorities, but obviously they have a lot of questions for her, including why were you talking to him and were you helping him?

ed parents after 12-year- old martinez boy injured in the boston bombings does have a long road to recovery. they say their son has hearing loss in his right ear and had 86 staples removed from his leg on thursday. but it is the emotional toll of the attacks that has them the most concerned. >> form they had enough skin to put the incision back together again and it's gotten better every day. right now it's just a matter of regaining that strength he's lost and the hoe ability from the injury. -- and the mobility from the injury. >> he returned from the bay area from boston earlier this week. he attended the warriors game thursday night and hopes to go back to school as soon as next week. the boston marathon bombings have prompted organizers of another high profile sporting event to increase security today. the 139th running of the kentucky derby takes place this afternoon at churchill downs in louisville. the run for the roses will draw from 150,000 spectators. new safety rules include no

camcorders, cooler, pop-up tents or any purses larger than 12 inches. >> reporter: do you mind all these restrictions? >> somewhat but i'm glad after what has happened everywhere el. i have no problem whatsoever. >> 1200 local, state and federal officers will patrol the racetrack today. students entering the u.s. will face additional inspections. the trouble documents are checked and verified but new measures are being enacted. they contain a daze take base with -- database with information about college enrollment. that comes after dzhokhar tsarnaev was allowed to leave the u.s. and return. his visa should have been canceled. fixing the nation's immigration system goes hand in hand with expanding trade with latin america, according to the

adults. the task force of elected officials originally considered two options: tearing it down and building a new school at the same site or building a new campus on a nearby property. the discussion is set to continue next week. the children who survived the shooting are currently attending a remodel school in a neighboring town. gun control advocates hope to sway opinion at this weekend's nra national meeting. 75,000 people are expected to attend the convention in houston. the association leaders say they are more resolved than ever to defend the right to bear arms. speakers include sarah palin. >> here is the thing that nancy pelosi and feinstein and boxer won't tell you. emotion won't make anybody safer. >> gun control groups such as the one belonging to former arizona congresswoman gabby giffords have bought internet

ads to support background checks. her husband also wrote an editorial. prosecutors charged 30-year- old jeffrey boyce with seven felonies. they say he carjacked a man on monday and carjacked another -- tried to carjack on the woman. woman. authorities have yet to file charges in the case. no comarnlgs will be filed against a former preschool teach near pleasanton accused of tying up a 2-year-old girl in class. the girl's parents accused 25- year-old of using masking tape to tie their daughter's hands and feet when she refused to take a nap. they say she then shared pictures of their daughter tied up with other teachers. prosecutors would only say that they've reviewed the evidence and decided not to file criminal charges. the girl's parents filed a lawsuit against the woman and center point church and

we are following breaking news out of afghanistan where five members of the u.s. military were killed by a rodeside bomb. -- roadside bomb. new this morning, a solar plane has landed in phoenix, arizona on the first leg of a cross-country trip. a solar impulse touched down around 12:30 this morning at sky harbor international airport after taking off yesterday from moffitt field in mountain view. the plane is also scheduled to make stops in dallas, st. louis, washington, d.c., and new york. if all goes well, it will make the all around world flight in 2015. grateful dead fans keep trucking along in their effort to stop a proposal to rename an amphitheater in san francisco's excelsior neighborhood. nearly 1600 people have signed an online petition to save the amp theater in mcchildren park. it was named for -- mclaren park. it was named for the musician.

a lot going on weather wise. let's get right over to rosemary who can update on how we're doing so far. we're waking up with a red flag warning for the north bay hills. it will last the entire day. right now i'm watching gusts to around 30 miles per hour. hawkeye gusts to 20 miles per hour. we do have changes coming, though. it's a system right about here that is actually going to move this direction. it's eventually going to be off the coast of the bay area. and it is going to bring us a cooldown. it is going to switch our wind flow to an on shore cooler breeze and we could seen see a few scattered showers. i'm going to stop it here at this evening. we've got this low already entering the edge of california there. a few scattered showers a possibility over the sierra tonight as we get into tomorrow, notice the clouds along the coastline beginning to beef up a little bit. as i roll you through the next couple of days, you're going to

fire danger across california, although there should be some relief on the weather front. firefighters up and down the state are right now battling new and old fires. welcome back to mornings on

2. i'm claudine wong. i'm mike mibach. crews are battling a brushfire in the portola area. the first call went out around 5:50 this morning. there is no word yet on the cause or size of that fire. a red flag warning currently in effect. fire stations raised red flags alerting people of the danger. the problem gusty off shore winds and low humidity. this is the second red flag warning in the bay area this week. it is set to expire at 3:00 this afternoon. fire crews from the bay area are also battling other wildfires burning across the state. cal fire says firefighters from all nine bay area counties are down south working to contain the springs fire in ventura county. local fire crews are also on the fire lines north of chico. fire officials say having those crews on the road does stretch the resources left behind.

>> i'm not sure what depend pt we've gone to at this point -- depth we've gone to at this point but right now the need is down south. >> two wildfires that broke out in the bay area earlier this week are now contained. the yellow fire burned 125 acres and another fire burned 75 acres. in oakland 11 people are living in temporary housing this morning after their four- plex caught fire. we'll show you pictures taken by a ktvu sire shortly a -- viewer shortly after 7:00 last night. you can see the heavy, black smoke pouring out of the front of that building. the fire displaced eight adults and three children but no one was hurt. it took firefighters about 30 minutes to put that fire out. one resident told us the fire started when a stove caught fire while cooking dinner, but the exact cause is still under investigation. it's been a week since the shocking and fatal attack of an 8-year-old girl in calaveres county. investigators have been searching the home of leila looking for any clues to determine who stabbed the girl to death last friday.

sheriff's deputies have collected several knives in the house and are testing to see if one of them was used in the attack. the 12-year-old brother reported seeing a male intruder. investigators have received assistance from the f.b.i. and gotten hundreds of tips through a phone hot line. members of a comurch in east oak lad -- church in east oakland say a shelter has become a magnet for crime and they want the city to now step in. the bus shelter is right across the street from the alan temple baptist church on 85th avenue and international. church leaders say their security camera was rolling when a church member was robbed at the bus shelter in the middle of the day. reverend daniel beauford says the shelter has become a cover for criminals. >> people are selling drugs and defecating and fornicating and all kinds of things right at this bus stop. >> church leaders say they have complained but did not get a response. ac transit and the city cold us that clear channel owns the bus shelters and is responsible for maintaining them. ac transit also told us they have asked officers to do extra

patrols at that specific stop. richland police have arrested four people in an effort to cut down crime at the richmond bart station. crime is not only up inside the station but in the area surrounding it as well. richmond's police chief is set to meet with amtrak and bart bliss next week to see what can be done to make that transit village safer. the san francisco health department is warning nordstrom customers that they may have been exposed to typhoid fever. officials say an employee at the nordstrom cafe in the galleria handled the food while suffering from the disease. anyone who ate at the cafe during the last two weeks of april should seek immediate medical attention if they experience any symptoms and those symptoms include gastrointest al illness, high fever and a rash. >> i started getting abdominal cramping and stomach flu like symptoms, you know. it lasted for a good two days. >> nordstrom is offering free

testing and treatment to customers. symptoms of typhoid fever can take up to two weeks to a appear. the great resort and casino is looking for people interested in working in marketing, guest services, sciewrpt and as a dealer. -- security and as a dealer. 2,000 people will be hired before the casino opens. hundreds of people have already been invited to interviews. >> i don't know if i'm getting a job or not, but i did apply and i did have an interview. >> the company says it will continue to review applications before making any job offers. the target date for the casino to open is november 1. the city of napa is charging the bottle rock music festival almost $400,000 for police, fire and other services. bottle rocks provisional permit shows festival organizers owe the city more than $3 -9d 7,000, including -- $397,000, including more than $283,000 in police costs. they plan to have as many as 40 extra officers on duty each day

of the festival. the five-day music festival starts on wednesday night. mechanics at six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo have walked off the job. mechanics picketed outside the park yesterday and plan to protest every weekend until an agreement it reached. park officials say rides are being inspected and maintained daily during the walkout grz disneyland has reopened its popular space mountain ride after the walt disney company decided it would not appeal a case involving workplace safety. the ride shut down last month after a contractor was injured in a fall while careening the ride -- cleaning the ride's roof. they fined the contractor $60,000 and proposed fining disney but disney is not going to appeal the fine. >> there's always pirates of the caribbean, one of my favorite if space mountain is ever closed. we're talking weather. fire crews battling one down in the peninsula, a grass fire. let's check in with rosy to check on conditions. >> still very warm and dry out there. we do have changes coming.

giving you a live view from mt. diablo this morning. we're up atop that mountain. 61 degrees and winds whipping to 50 miles per hour. a search is under way for a third american of an american refueling plane that crashed. it crashed into a mountain range yesterday as it was returning back to an american base. no word yet on what caused that crash. this morning israel confirms it has carried out an air strike in syria. israel says the strike targeted

a shipment of missiles scheduled to be delivered to hezbollah. it came just days after hezbollah offered aid to syrian president assad to suppress opposition groups. analysts say it may also be a response to president obama's comments that the u.s. does not have plans to send ground troops to syria. this morning we're learning that what may have caused a building to collapse in bending la dash where at least -- bangladesh where at least 350 people were killed. heavy machinery and high capacity generators may have caused that disaster. officials say substandard materials used during the construction also contributed to the chance. one of the building's engineers has been arrested on a negligence charge. the city of walnut creek is bringing in an independent consultant to take over the city management duties in the sexual misconduct investigation at the center for the arts. city officials say they now think the city manager knew about abuse allegations against a former employee earlier than he admitted.

four other city employees are currently on administrative leave because police say they knew of the alleged abuse but did not report it. police in santa cruz are hoping newly released sketches can help them find a man they say groped two female runners. police say the attacks happened 30 minutes apart on monday night in the area of escalonde drive and olive street. in both attacks the man ran past the victims, turned around and then groped them. the sketches are different but police say they believe the same man is responsible for both attacks. only on 2, an exclusive look at broken bolts on the new bay bridge. our cameras were allowed to get up close to the bolts that recently cracked when tightened. the bolts were designed to help stabilize the new span in an earthquake. engineers are now trying to determine if the 200 remaining bolts that were made two years aft defective ones also need to be replaced. >> we're very, very close. the expectation is we're going to be announcing through the toll bridge program oversight

committee a design alternative next wednesday and we are literally on the verge of that. >> next week caltrans will also announce if the new bridge will open as scheduled on labor day weekend. a driver not yet old enough to legally drink is facing drunk driving charges after a deadly crash in the east bay. police say the young woman behind the wheel was driving the wrong way on highway 24 near the central exit. the head-on crash killed 51- year-old alvaro cruz of pittsburg. believes behind a wife and two sons. he never drank alcohol and even warned his children about drinking and driving. >> he was such a hard-working man to pass away like that, it's unbetterable right now. -- unbearable right now. >> oiferls say they arrested -- overs say they arrested the 20- year-old of brentwood. she suffered minor injuries in the incident. she is expected to make an appearance in court early next week. police will be out in force looking for drunk drivers

triclosan's effectiveness. the chemical does not pose any known threat to humans but several animal studies have shown it can cause changes to hormone regulation and may make bacteria more resistant to antibiotics. antibiotic. this morning nestle has announced a recall of pizza. it includes california pizza kitchen's thin crust pizza and grilled chicken, digiororno pizzas are also being recalled. there were complaints of bits of plastic in the pizzas prompting the recall. new dash cam video has been release reece witherspoon's -- reece witherspoon's arrest for -- reese witherspoon's arrest for disorderly conduct. it also shows witherspoon claiming to be pregnant and telling the officer he will make national news if he arrests her.

a group of fishermen in hawaii want the northern pacific humpback whale removed from the endangered species list. they say there are more than 2100 humpbacks f. removed, there would still be protections in place for the whales. budweiser says every case of beer sold it tomorrow and july 4 will benefit military families. budweiser says it will make a donation for every case to the folds of honor foundation up to a total of $1 million. that's in addition to an initial donation of $500,000. the folds of honor foundation provides scholarships to families of soldiers killed or disabled in service. graduation could be delayed for dozens of seniors at sonomo state university because of a registration problem caused by a computer glitch. according to the press democrat, seniors registering

page. childhood curiosity and discovery is the theme of this year's children's parade in aloe alto. the parade of marching bands, floats, pets and thousands of children in costume starts at 10:00 a.m. it's a tradition and is held on the first saturday of may. it is the oldest children's parade in northern california. time now 7:55. we have rosemary watching a lot of changing weather us for. it's hot now but things may be changing yet. there's rain in your forecast. this is so strange. >> you're right. an interesting turn of events going to happen over the course of the next few days. a big sigh of relief for some of those who are anxious to get rid of the heat because it's on its way out. i want to show you the system here that is going to help bring ug the cooldown and maybe even -- us the cooldown and maybe even some rain. sort of an atypical pattern. not completely unheard of but we typically don't get storms that move from east to west. they typically move the other direction. but by this evening, it's already over california.

even over the sierra we could see a few pop-up showers, even the possibility of thunderstorms so you know we'll be watching that possibility as well. by sunday morning, it's now off the coast. that's where it is going to remain for the next few days. notice you see wrap around showers moving through california. hit or miss we're very dry. it's going to take some time for the atmosphere to even moisten but eventually we may see a few scattered showers hit the ground. the bigger change will be the drop in temperatures. starting with today a few degrees inland. a bigger drop tomorrow so tomorrow will be the coolest day of the weekend. and then inland areas coming all the way down to about 70 degrees monday, tuesday. you see a few scattered showers a possibility all the way through tuesday. you probably won't even need your umbrella for this. partly cloudy, turning drier and slightly warmer on wednesday. big changes could be coming for foreign students entering the united states. why they will now have to face additional inspections and what prompted those changes. >> we continue to follow the latest developments surrounding

several wildfires here in the state. the biggest one is burning in southern california. how by area firefighters are helping with those efforts.

an early start to the wildfire season. >> this morning, we're breezy in the hills, with a notable cooldown coming up. >> and the bay area in a battle with miami to host the super bowl. why it's now looking like the big game could be heading west. . good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2, saturday, may 4th. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. if you're sick of the hot, you may like rosemary's forecast. >> yes, we are indeed faced with a red flag warning this morning for the north bay hills. it lasts the entire day, but i'm also tracking a little bit of fog at the coast, signs of a cooling coming our way by the afternoon, the pattern really beginning to shift. our dry northerly flow is going to turn to a cooler pacific, moist air moving into the bay area and that will lead to a

cooldown and a weak system bringing us a slight chance a few scattered showers. i'll break it down, coming up. the fire danger continues to keep crews busy across the bay area. crews rushed to a brush fire in the pore toll lavallee area around alpine road, near the santa clara county border. the first call went out around 5:50 this morning. fire departments responded including woodside and menlo park. we're told the fire is now out, but there is still a lot of smoke in the area. and an update to the breaking news story we first brought to you yesterday evening in the south bay. firefighters report a small flare-up this morning from a 30- acre fire near the east ridge shopping center in east san jose. news chopper 2 flew over the fire, as flames and smoke covered a large, open field yesterday. the original fire threatened more than 100 nearby mobile homes. >> imagine a wall that is fire and it's, like, it looks kind of like the end of the world to

me. >> the cause of that fire is under investigation. investigators say a contractor cutting the brush to prevent fires was finishing up when that fire started. some residents of the mobile home park were treated for smoke inhalation. officials say this morning's flare-up is the first since yesterday and they are keeping a watch to make sure that there won't be any more. as rosemary mentioned, a red flag has been issued for the north bay hills above 1000 feet. red flags have been raised. the national service cites gusty offshore winds and low humidity. this is the second red flag warning this week, set to expire at 3:00 this afternoon. and just in time, the santa rosa fire department today will celebrate their reopening of two fire stations, temporarily closed due to brownouts. station 10 on corporate center parkway and station 11 on lewis road were closed on a rotating basis because of the budget cuts. firefighters have been splitting time between the stations and filling in at

other fire houses across the city. but a federal grant is now allowing santa rosa to hire additional firefighters and keep fire stations open. the reopening ceremony and open house for station 11 is between 11:00 and 12:30 today. station's 10's ceremony runs from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. restrictions are in place because of the high fire danger. alum rock park has banned open fires. firefighters say any sparks could i ignite dry brush. a break in the weather could help firefighters battling two massive wildfires in southern california. strong winds fueling the springs fire north of los angeles are expected to die down today. that fire has damaged at least 15 homes. 4000 more are threatened. >> what is really different here in the west is over the last 50 years, the population of the american southwest has

quadrupled. there are more and morehouseing developments, more and more communities in harm's way. >> the springs fire is 30% contained. another wildfire burning to the east in riverside county is 75% contained. we will be keeping an eye on the fires in the bay area and the rest of california all through the morning. you can also find more information at ktvu.com. well, we are following breaking news right now out of richmond, where police are investigating a deadly shooting. it happened just a short time ago on chancellor avenue near 17th street. police say a man was driving his car in the area when he was shot. his car then crashed into a nearby home. the suspects have been arrested at this time. overnight news, oakland police found a body in the oakland estuary. police found a man abou3:30 this morning on a pier near jack london square. the man's wife told police that her husband cleans boats by working underneath them often, and she called 911 when he did not come home last night.

police say there are no signs of foul play. the investigation is continuing. new this morning, the chp is investigating the cause of a fatal accident in santa rosa. this happened just before 5:00 this morning on river road. the chp says the driver of an suv lost control and hit a tree. the chp has not said if alcohol was a factor. this morning, police are continuing their search for a gunman after a shooting in east oakland. it happened around 9:00 last night on 96th avenue and birch street. police say one person was hurt and transported to the hospital. no word on his or her condition. oakland police are questioning a man suspected of having a gun at the city's first friday event. someone told police they saw an armed man walking in the crowd last night. police say when they spotted the man, he ran off and tried to get rid of the gun. that man was eventually caught and taking into custody for questioning. no one was hurt during the incident. security has been tight at first friday events since the shooting death of 18-year-old

kiante campbell. he was killed in february as a first friday event was wrapping up. after the shooting, organizers made several changes, banning alcohol from the event, ending it an hour earlier and made the event smaller, taking it back from 10 blocks down to seven. the bay area looks like a good bet to host super bowl l. the big game in 2016 will either be held at the new stadium in santa clara, or at the sun life stadium in miami. but the florida state legislature adjourned yesterday without considering a proposal to spend $350 million in renovations. and the nfl told miami those upgrades were needed in order to be considered for the super bowl. while santa clara's mayor doesn't think the bay area is a lock, he does say he is optimistic. >> it is a regional bid and it really is a model for how we should work together on large events like this, whether the super bowl or the olympics, we can't be beat. >> the nfl owners will vote between miami and the bay area on may 21st. hp pavillion will be rocking tomorrow night, as

way. and that is a big sigh of relief, especially with fire danger and the critical fire weather concerns going on in the north bay. at this hour and continuing until 3:00 this afternoon for areas over mount tam, mount st. helena. and it's pretty widespread. very warm out there in the hills. up above 1000 feet, 60s and 70s in areas like mount diablo, hawk eye, reporting gusts to 39 miles per hour, in addition to the heat. oakland, calm. santa rosa, calm. sfo, calm. here where we reside, it's fairly calm. up above 1000 feet, you see the winds. fairfield, northerly dry breeze at 14 miles per hour. i need to point that out because now i need to point out your temperature in fairfield. 78 degrees. where we do have a very weak onshore breeze, we are cooler this morning. half moon bay, 52. even patchy fog reported here.

50s, low 60s around the bay. temperatures very similar to how we woke up yesterday. inland, 78. fairfield, 72. antioch, where we continue to see a bit of an offshore breeze, that's going to change. by afternoon, bigger changes are coming. take a look. this is the system here that is going to retro grade. it's going to be off the bay area coastline by tomorrow morning. that's going to park itself for a couple of days. that's not only going to cool us down, it's going to bring us unstable weather. we could see the possibility of thunderstorms in the sierra today and a few scattered showers for our area as early as monday and tuesday. i'll show you that in the extended forecast. let's talk about today. upper 70s, low 80s expected over parts of the north bay. mid-80s in fairfield, concord, antioch. a warm day, still above average for this time of year in many case, but not as hot. 79 fremont, 80 degrees san jose. big change in santa cruz today, 73 degrees. you could drop anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees along the coastline, especially near santa cruz for the afternoon.

valley neighborhood. police made the decision to order evacuations after a suspicious person on cesar chavez street claimed to have explosives arounds 12:40 yesterday afternoon. the bomb squad responded. no bomb was found. people were later returned to their homes. protesters have gathered outside a funeral home in boston that right now has the body of tamerlan tsarnaev. the funeral director says everyone deserves a dignified burial service, no matter the circumstances. people angry about the bombing say they don't want a terror suspect buried on american soil. >> send him back to russia. let them do all they want over there with him, but not here. this is a disgrace. >> tsarnaev's family says it wants another autopsy. the first medical examiner ruled he died from gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma

to his head and body. police say he was shot in a gun battle with them, but died while his brother drove over him while trying to elude authorities. alan and catharine hern say their son aaron has hearing loss in his right here, following the boston marathon bombing, and had 86 staples removed from his leg on thursday. but it is the emotional toll of the attacks that has them most concerned. >> fortunately, they had enough skin to put the incision back together again and it's gotten better every day. right now, just a matter of kind of regaining a lot of that strength he's lost and the mobility from the injury. >> hern returned to the bay area from boston earlier this week. he attended the warriors game thursday night and hopes to go back to school as soon as next week. the boston marathon bombings have prompted organizers of another high profile sporting event to increase security today. the 139th running of the kentucky derby takes place at

but they couldn't come to a decision. the school has been closed since december when a gunman killed 20 children and six adults. the task force originally considered only two options. renovating the existing school or building a new campus down the street. but now there is also talk of other solutions, which include combining sandy hook with another school. gun control advocates hope to sway opinion at this weekend's nra national meeting. 75,000 people are expected to attend that convention in houston. association leaders say they are more resolved than ever to defend the right to bear arms. speakers include the governor of texas and former republican vice presidential candidate sarah palin. >> but here is the thing that nancy pelosi and feinstein and boxer, what the gals won't tell you, emotion won't make anybody safer. >> gun control groups such as the one belonging to former arizona congresswoman gabby

giffords have bought internet and television ads asking nra to support background checks. gifford's husband also wrote an editorial in houston's biggest newspaper. a man suspected of a murder in oregon and two car jacking appearances in the bay area made his first appearance in court. 30-year-old jeffrey boys was charged with seven felonies. they say he car jacked a man on monday, then tried to car jack another woman. boys is the suspect in the slaying of a castro valley woman who was killed while traveling in oregon. authorities have yet to file charges in that case. no charges will be filed against a former preschool teacher in pleasanton, accused of tying up a 2-year-old girl in class. the girl's parents accused 25- year-old angela kalkagno to tie their daughters hands and feet when she refused to take a nap. they say the teacher shared pictures of their daughter tied up with other teachers. prosecutors would only say they have reviewed the evidence and have decided not to file criminal charges. the girl's parents have filed a lawsuit against her and

centerpoint church and preschool where she worked. a former morgan hill preschool teacher pleaded no contest to putting sleeping medication into toddlers' sippy cups. the woman is charged with attempted child endangerment. investigators say another teacher at the kiddie academy in morgan hill saw the teacher putting pills in the cups. the cups were taken away before any children drank from them. investigators say the teacher admitted to putting a sleep aid in the cups and she is due to be sentenced july 5th. grateful dead fans keep trucking along in their effort to stop a proposal to rename an amphitheater in san francisco's excelsior neighborhood. nearly 1600 people signed an online petition to save the jerry garcia amphitheater in mcclaren park. the theater was named for the late artist. a los angeles nonprofit would fund renovations and rename the site. fremont's mayor plans to beat the heat today by jumping into a swimming pool fully

. a north dakota man drove right through a jail's front doors. sheriffs investigators are still investigating the cause of the crash, but don't think the man had been drinking. a similar incident happened there about five years ago. new this morning, a solar plane has landed in phoenix, arizona on the first leg of a cross-country trip. the solar impulse touched down around 12:30 this morning at sky harbor airport after taking off yesterday from moffett field in mountain view. the plane is also scheduled to make stops in dallas, st. louis, washington, dc, and new york. if all goes well, it will make a round-the-world flight in 2015. lack of rain this year has taken a toll at the folsom lake area. by summer arrives, officials say the water could be at its

lowest level in five years. many businesses are concerned, since they say it could mean a drop in revenue if boaters decide to go to other lakes for recreation this year. it should be a nice day today, and just got a message on facebook from a viewer who said in core dehlia today, big annual wide garage sales, hundreds of sales around core dehlia villages in fairfield. people coming as far away from nevada. not a bad day to be out looking for a deal, right? >> the takeaway for today, not as hot! inland, temperatures begin to trend downward. here's your forecast. how about we start with now. temperatures in the 50s in areas like the north bay valleys, along the coast. along the coast, i see a thin layer of fog and it's creeping just into the bay this morning, watching that from some of our live view cameras. inland east bay and in the santa clara valley, already in the 60s. now, getting into the lunch hour, widespread low 70s around

the bay. upper 70s to near 80 degrees and a few low 80s in concord, livermore, san jose, santa rosa, upper 70s for lunch hour. and the extended forecast, temperatures again trending down today. still going to be warm inland, along the coastline, patchy fog, mid-60s. but temperatures, not as hot as we saw on friday. tomorrow, a bigger drop with partly cloudy skies. and i now have put in that possibility of maybe a few sprinkles. 10%, very, very slim. on monday, looks like we may see it bumped up a little bit. i think our better bet will be tuesday for the possibility of maybe a few scattered showers. but we will continue with this cooling trend. mid-70s for the inland areas on sunday. then the inland communities on monday and tuesday barely reaching about 70 degrees. back to you. he's accused of starting a devastating wildfire that burned dozens of homes, but he won't stand trial while charges have been dropped against the man who may have sparked in the

. getting ready to hit the front lines. firefighters are preparing for another dangerous day with red flag warnings in effect. welcome back to mornings on on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. there is a red flag fire warning for the north bay hills right now. gusty offshore winds and low humidity are combining to form a dangerous situation. ktvu's alex savidge, live this morning in marin county to discuss this early start to the bay area fire season. alex? >> reporter: good morning to you. we're already seeing the winds pick up where we are this morning. we're close to mount tam,

actually at the throckmorton ridge fire department, where they are geared up today with the red flag warning there effect right now. they are expecting strong gusts, low humidity and low temps through the day. 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts up here when you get elevation, so obviously that's a big concern. newspaper this area, you have a lot of homes that are close to the wildland areas. we bring in the fire captain, what's the concerns today. >> the concern today is rapid fire spread, driven by the weather. the wind, low humidities, and just the potential to grow largely as it did yesterday in san jose. >> we're looking up right now. we've already got winds here, as you see the flag up there, already moving. you're only expecting it's going to get worse? >> yeah, as the day goes on, i believe they predicted midafternoon is when the winds will be at their strongest, with the red flag conditions

set to expire at 3:00 p.m. >> and the red flag warning is for much of the north bay. we're talking about here in marin county, napa county, sonoma county really being the affected areas. i want to talk about something else going on here. if we can show what's going on in the fire station, we have the people who live in this area, up in the mill valley area, and they are preparing for a fire evacuation drill today, of all days, right? kind of fitting, i guess. what's happening later this morning? >> that's correct. led by the city of mill valley, southern marin fire protection district and marin county fire department, we're sponsoring an evacuation drill that all residents who choose to participate can go to predesignated evacuation areas for check-in and fill out a survey to better help us understand what needs to be delivered to the community to help them in disaster preparedness. >> that's happening today. obviously, very important on a day like today when we have red flag conditions. thank you very much, captain.

i appreciate that, with the marin county fire department. they are on alert up here. we're close to mount tam, areas that could potentially burn and cause a lot of potential destruction. they are on alert up here. red flag warning, again, in effect until 3:00 this afternoon. live in mill valley this morning, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. and more bay area fire crews are headed to southern california to help battle the springs fire in ventura county. it continues to threaten more than 4000 homes. we go to the newsroom with how the shift in the resources may impact local fire coverage. >> reporter: mike, the fairfield fire department is the latest bay area crew headed to southern california to fight the springs fire. fairfield fire is spending brush 37 with a crew of four firefighters as part of a strike team from solano county. yesterday, our crews caught up with a strike team of five,

and joining the fight in ventura county. the springs fire sparked thursday morning and still threatens more than 4000 homes. i just checked the calfire web page. it says the fire has grown to 28,000 acres and is only 38% contained. so far, no homes have been lost, but there have been many close calls. >> it was very close. it came up right to our door. i mean, if you look at the pictures, it was so close. i still -- my heart pounds when i think about it. if. >> reporter: as we mentioned, dry conditions and high winds in the bay area also raised the fire concern here at home, as local crews head south. we asked if that could put a strain on local resources? >> it can. i'm not sure at what depth we've gone to, but right now the need is down south. we will maintain resources in the county as well. >> reporter: calfire's helicopter unit is now fully staffed. we're told the agency jammed

five days of training into less than three days, because fire season is starting so early. with improving weather conditions, crews may get a handle on the valley springs fire. in our 9:00 hour, i'll have the latest on their fight this morning. live in the newsroom, ktvu channel 2news. a fire in san mateo county has damaged five homes. firefighters say that fire broke out just before 5:00 last night on black mountain road in hillsboro and then spread to five houses. no one was hurt and the cause of that fire, still under investigation. new this morning, santa clara county prosecutors have dropped all charges against a contractor accused of accidentally starting the 2008 summit wildfire. the san jose mercury news reports channing burton will not be charged, after an investigation found he wasn't negligent in burning piles of cleared brush. the fire destroyed 63 homes and 69 outbuildings, and it took a week to contain. in oakland, 11 people are living in temporary housing

this morning, after their fourplex caught fire. take a look at this video sent to us by ktvu viewer. shortly after 7:00 last night in the fruitvale district, first firefighters arriving on scene there. the fire displaced eight adults and three children, but no one was hurt t took firefighters about 30 minutes to put it out. one resident told us the fire started when a stove caught fire while cooking dinner, but the exact cause, still under investigation. we are following breaking news out of southern afghanistan, where five americans have been killed in a roadside bomb. a military official confirmed they were u.s. service members, but have not released any other details about the blast. but a spokesman for the governor of kandahar province said a coalition patrol hit the roadside bobo in the spiritual birth place of the taliban. with the deaths, 47 members of the coalition have been killed so far this year, including 32 americans. well, it has now been a

week since the fatal stabbing of an 8-year-old girl in calaveras county. investigators have been searching the home of leila fowler, looking for any clues, as they try to figure out who stabbed the girl to death last saturday and why. sheriff deputies have collected several knives in the house and are now testing them to see if one of them was used in the attack. leila's 12-year-old brother told police that he saw a male intruder in the house. investigators are getting help from the fbi and say there have been hundreds of tips through a phone hotline. police in santa cruz are hoping newly released sketches can help them find a man they say groped two female runners. police say the attacks happened 30 minutes apart on monday night in the area of escalona street and olive drive. in both attacks, the man ran past the victims, turned around, then groped them. the sketches are different, but police say they believe the same man is responsible for the two attacks. members of a church in east oakland say an ac transit bus shelter has become a magnet for

crime and they want the city to step in. that bus shelter is right across the street from the alan temple baptist church on 85th avenue and international boulevard. church leaders say their security camera was rolling when a church member was robbed at the bus shelter in the middle of the day. reverend daniel beauford says the shelter has become a cover for criminals. >> people are selling drugs and defecating and foreign indicate and all kinds of things. >> church members have complained, but say they don't get any response. clear channel owns the bus shelters and is responsible for maintaining them. ac transit told us they have asked officers to do extra patrols at that bus stop. richland police arrested four people as part of an effort to cut down on crime around the richmond bart station. new numbers show crime is up inside the station and in the areas surrounding it as well. richmond's police chief is set to meet with amtrak and bart police next week to see what

can be done to make the transit village safer. the san francisco health department is warning nordstrom customers they may have been exposed to typhoid fever. officials say an employee at the nordstrom cafe in stonestown galleria handled food while suffering from the disease. anyone who ate at the cafe the last two weeks of april should seek immediate medical attention if they experienced symptoms. those symptoms include gastro intestinal illnesses, high fever, and a rash. >> i started getting abdominal cramping and some stomach flu- like symptoms and it lasted for a good two, two days. >> nordstrom says it is offering free testing and treatment to customers. symptoms of typhoid fever can take up to three weeks to start appearing. your time now, 8:38. obviously we're talking a lot about the hot weather, but there's also changes that rosemary is watching today, tomorrow, into the week. >> yes, we'll start to see the changes today. the bigger drop will come

tomorrow. we're talking about temperatures. so if it has been a little bit too toasty for you, i've got good news. hold on just a few moments. giving you a live look here at what is happening around the bay area, most of us waking up with mostly sunny skies. temperatures within a few degrees of how we started yesterday. i do see a northerly breeze in fairfield. that is really hiking up your temperatures at this hour. we'll take a look at that in just a moment. a lot to talk about. we're starting out with the high fire danger over the north bay hills. alex is out there as we speak. the gusts are expected to reach to about 45 miles per hour. right now, i'm saying it's very warm, very dry, but the gusts, anywhere from 20 to 30 over parts of the north bay hills. could grow a little later today, as alex was talking about. mount diablo, low 60s, very dry and windses are gusting to 50. where we reside, where we hang out, so to speak, winds are typically calm, even an onshore breeze in napa. napa, just a tad cooler than 24 hours ago. but in fairfield, northerly

breeze at 14 miles per hour, again, really driving your temperatures. 12 to 15 degrees warmer at this hour than 24 hours ago. fairfield, you take the cake for being the warm spot! 74 in antioch. 78 in fairfield. and the rest of us in the 50s to low 60s. 65 mountain view. half moon bay, now mostly sunny at 53. half moon bay woke up with a little patchy, dense fog. again, i'm seeing just a thin layer right along the coastline. we'll continue to see that thicken up. it has to do with this system right here that is actually going to push southwest over the course of today. by tonight, it's going to be over california and that will even bring the slight responsibility of thunderstorms to tahoe, if you plan on heading that direction for your weekend. there it is over idaho. by the afternoon, a little tough to see, but we've got this counterclockwise motion going on. we've got a few scattered showers popping up over lake tahoe, maybe even thunderstorms. by tomorrow morning, it's now off the coastline. notice what we have here. a few scattered showers off the coastline. we're going to wake up with low

clouds at the coast, perhaps a little bit of drizzle along the coast. it's now sunday, 3:00 in the afternoon and you can see just hit or miss showers over parts of the bay area. northeast corner of california and the mountains getting a better chance at this. it's going to linger. it's going to be with us monday into tuesday. we're starting out very dry. lot of this may not hit the ground, but eventually, we may see scattered showers out of this, and maybe a few scattered thunderstorms. 70s around the bay, 80s inland. mid-60s at the coast. 72 for san francisco, if you're going to seat giants play later today, low 660s at game time, upper 50s with onshore breeze. it is going to cool down. extended forecast, that onshore breeze is going to be strengthening and going to help to drive down temperatures. mid-70s in the forecast for inland areas tomorrow. low 60s at the coast. again, that slight possibility

drunk driving charges after a deadly crash in the east bay. police say the young woman behind the wheel was driving the wrong way on highway 24 near the central lafayette exit. the head-on crash killed 51- year-old alvaro cruz of pittsburg. he leaves behind a wife and two sons. they say he never drank alcohol and even warned his children about drinking and driving. >> to have something -- such a hard-working man pass away like that, it's unbearable right now. >> officers arrested 20-year- old annalise mckay of brentwood. she suffered minor injuries in the collision. she is expected to make her first appearance in court early next week. only on 2, an exclusive look at broken bolts on the new bay bridge. our cameras were allowed to get up close to those bolts that recently cracked when they were tightened. the bolts were designed to help stabilize the new span in an earthquake. engineers are now trying to

determine if 200 remaining bolts that were made two years after the defective ones also need to be replaced. >> we're very, very close. the expectation is we'll be announcing through the toll bridge program oversite committee a design alternative next wednesday. we are literally on the verge of that. >> next week, cal trans will also announce if the new bridge will open as scheduled on labor day weekend. well, the city of walnut creek is bringing in an independent consultant to take over the city's manager duties in the sexual misconduct investigation at the lesher center for the arts. city officials say they think the city manager knew about abusing allegations against a former employee earlier than he admitted. four other employees are on administrative leave because police say they also knew of the alleged abuse, but did not report it. pope francis has named a new bishop for oakland. reverend michael barber will serve as the city's 5th bishop. he became a priest in 1985 and

right now is based in boston. barber will be installed in oakland's cathedral of christ of the light on may 25th as the bishop of the oakland diocese. his predecessor, salvatore cord lone, is now the archbishop of san francisco. graduation could be delayed for dozens of centers at sonoma state university because of a registration problem caused by a computer glitch. according to the press democrat, seniors registering for their final semester were not given priority for classes. as a result, some seniors were not able to register for the last few classes they need to graduate on time. the university says computer software used to give priority to seniors during registration stopped working. they say the problem has since been fixed. the author of the classic novel "to kill a mockingbird" is suing her literary agent. in the suit, 87-year-old harper lee says samuel pinkis took advantage of her failing hearing and eyesight when she

. well, this weekend, iron man 3 is on track to set the biggest box office record of the year. the movie took in $15.6 million during its midnight screenings alone. preliminary estimates show iron man 3 will rake in $175 million in its opening weekend and that would be the biggest debut since the avengers, which set a $207 million record last year. well, police will be out in force this weekend, looking for drunk drivers taking off from cinco de mayo celebrations. dui check points will be held across the bay area, including in san francisco, santa clara

warming up today. >> yes, hello to you. we do have a transition that will take place as we get into the afternoon. a few stories to tell this morning. red flag warning in the hills. we had patchy fog along the coast, and our temperatures, again, will be cooling as we get into the afternoon. so the ridge of high pressure still in place, but this low over idaho is actually going to be pulling our way, eventually hanging off the bay area coastline there and it's going to, well, park itself there for the next few days. today, into the afternoon, we're going to be cooler. red flag warning will expire at 3:00 in the afternoon. sunday looks to be the bigger drop in temperatures, and not to add too much to your plate here, we may even see a few sprinkles. i'll show you that in the extended forecast. today, if you're going to see the giants play, lucky you. in the afternoon, upper 50s by the end of the game and onshore breeze picking up in the afternoon 10 to 15 miles per hour at at&t park. extended forecast, again, entering the possibility of slight chance for some rain.

i think tomorrow morning we could wake up with patchy drizzle along the coastline. i think for sure, we'll see the low clouds back by tomorrow. onshore breeze is strengthening, driving temperatures down. inland areas will see a nice big drop. mid-70s in the forecast for the afternoon. meanwhile, along the coast, it's going to turn cool and we'll hang on to this pattern at least through tuesday into wednesday, where we get a better chance at some rain perhaps on tuesday, a few scattered showers there and temperatures on the cool to mild side. back to you. well, the fda plans to conduct a safety review of a common ingredient in antibacterial soap. the review will also study its effectiveness. the fda says the chemical doesn't pose any known threats to humans, but several animal studies have shown it can cause changes to hormone regulations and it may make bacteria more resistent to antibiotics. big changes could be coming for foreign students entering the united states. why they will now have to face additional inspections, and what's prompted those changes. >> plus, we continue to follow

horizon. i will share that with you, coming up. we begin with developing news that we first reported at the beginning of our newscast. a brush fire broke out just before 6:00 this morning, along alpine and los trancos road, near the san mateo/santa clara border. this is new video received just moments ago. you can see it's pretty hazy this morning. one resident tweeted this message, saying the heavy smell of smoke woke her up in menlo park. that whole area, socked with the low-hanging haze. it looks like fog, but you can really smell it when the fires are burning. fire departments that responded to the call are from woodside and menlo park. bay area firefighters are among the nearly 2000 battling a massive wildfire in ventura county. the springs fire threatens around 4000 homes this morning, and katie utes is live with more. >> reporter: claudine, in southern california, the battle continues against the fast- moving wildfire threatening

thousands of homes, like you said. now, the wind and dry conditions are really what's affecting ventura county with the springs fire. and firefighters hope that a break in the wind may be what they need. >> i had seen two and three- story flames behind my house, and it was terrifying. i thought there might not be a house, as i pulled up the driveway. but the house was still there and the big yellow fire engine, with three firemen. >> reporter: the infamous santa ana winds have whipped the springs fire into a frenzy, but those winds are forecasted to calm today. it may help crews get a handle on the fire that's grown to 28,000 acres. my latest check with calfire shows only 30% containment and as local crews head south to help, we asked if that could put a strain on local resources. >> we can. it can. i'm not sure what depth we've gone to at this point, but right now, the need is down south. we have to continue maintaining

resources in the county as well. >> reporter: calfire's helicopter unit is fully staffed. we're told the agency jammed five days of training into less than three days because fire season is starting so early. we're working to get you a live look from ventura county, as crews begin day three of their fight against the springs fire. that's coming up during this hour. live in the newsroom, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 2news. firefighters are trying to gain the upper hand of the panther fire to the north. calfire says the wildfire has burned more than 6600 acres northeast of chico. no homes are threatened. no one has been hurt. the fire is now 20% contained. back here in the bay area, there is a red flag fire warning in the north bay hills. together, gusty winds, low humidity, and bone-dry conditions posed a dangerous threat. ktvu's alex savidge is live in marin county this morning to talk about the early start to this bay area fire season. alex? >> reporter: good morning, claudine. we're in an area that's of real concern to firefighters.

we're up close to mount tam at the throckmorton ridge, marin county fire station where they are definitely on alert this morning because of the red flag warning. it is especially affecting areas above 1000 feet. that's the area where we are right now. take a look. we're up here close to the mountain and you can see the concern for fire crews. there are so many homes that just come right up next to the trees and brush in this area. so if any of this stuff were to go up, obviously you have homes that could be in the line of fire. the conditions up here right now, the winds are fairly calm. but of course with this red flag warning, there is the potential for those gusts to pick up. there is talk about some of the gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour here as you talk to some of the firefighters. and they are expecting the strongest winds to be coming in, in about the next hour or so. as we show you the fire station here, i also want to tell you that given the wildfires going on all over the state right now, the marin county fire department is telling me that they have quite a few of their crews that have been sent to both butte county and ventura

county to deal with those fires. but the captain assures me that all marin county fire stations are still fully staffed this morning and they are bracing for this early start to the fire season. >> extremely surprised. the senior members of our department looking back on the history of marin county and their season say this is, if not the earliest, one of the earliest years that we've had to send resources out for wildland fires. >> reporter: and it's fitting that this morning, the marin county fire department is actually holding a fire evacuation drill in this area. folks who live in the mill valley area close to mount tam will be taking part in this exercise, understanding the best ways to get down off the mountain and get to a safe area and notify firefighters and loved ones that they are okay in the event of a wildland fire in this area. the drill is just getting started, will be going for the next couple of hours. sirens will be going off in this area as sort of a practice run, in case there is a large wildland fire in this area. again, the red flag warning

continues today through 3:00. so firefighters will remain on alert up here in marin county until that time. live this morning in mill valley, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. and we have new information regarding the breaking news we first reported yesterday at 6:00. firefighters report this morning there was a small flare- up at the 30-acre fire near the east ridge shopping center in east san jose. news chopper 2 flew over the area yesterday. the fire threatened more than 100 nearby mobile homes. some residents were treated for smoke inhalation. >> imagine a wall, but it's fire, and it's, like, it looks kind of like the end of the world to me. >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but investigators say a contractor cutting brush to prevent fires was finishing up when that fire sparked. officials say this morning's flare-up is the first since

mid to upper 660s at the coast. so again, the takeaway here, just not as warm. temperatures will be coming down. the red flag warning expires for the north bay hills at 3:00 this afternoon. a big temperature plunge tomorrow, mid-70s in the forecast for the inland areas. low 60s at the coast. then you'll even see the possibility of a few scattered showers. i think monday and tuesday will be our better chance, although i do think we wake up with low clouds and drizzle along the coastline as early as tomorrow morning. back to the desk. we are following developing news out of richmond this morning, where police are investigating a deadly shooting. it happened around 7:30 this morning on chancellor avenue near 17th street. police say a man was driving his car in that area when he was shot. his car then crashed into a nearby home. no word on if anyone was hurt inside the home, and no suspects have been arrested. in overnight news, oakland police found a body in the oakland estuary. police say they found the victim at about 3:30 this morning on a pier in jack

london square. the man's wife had called police after he didn't come home and told them her husband cleans boats often by working underneath them. right now, police say there are no signs of foul play, but that investigation continues. and this morning, police are continuing the search for a gunman after a shooting in east oakland. that happened around 9:00 last night on 96th avenue and birch street. police say one person was hurt and taken to the hospital. we don't have any information on his or her condition. new this morning, president obama is preparing for an important trade summit that's scheduled to begin in the next hour. he arrived in costa rica this morning for a business conference with leaders from across central america. countries taking part include el salvador and guatemala. the group posed for pictures with president obama here. the summit is aimed at improving relations and fostering cooperation between the u.s. and central america. mr. obama is scheduled to return to washington after the summit. the president says fixing the nation's immigration system goes hand in hand with

. welcome back. good morning to you. giving you a sweeping view over the bay and the north bay mountains, waking up with a heightened fire concern above 1000 feet for the north bay hills. red flag warning in place until 3:00. we are following breaking news for you out of southern afghanistan, where five mesh have been killed in a roadside bombing. a military official has confirmed they were u.s. service members, but have not released any other details about the blast. however, a spokesman for the governor of the kandahar province said a coalition patrol hit the roadside bomb in an area known as the spiritual birth place for the taliban. the deaths raise the number of coalition members killed so far this year to 47, including 32 americans. well, this morning, israel confirms it has carried out an airstrike in syria. israel says the strike targeted a shipment of missiles scheduled to be delivered to

hezbollah. the strike came just days after hezbollah offered support to suppress analyst groups. the u.s. does not have plans to send ground troops to syria. foreign students entering the u.s. will now face additional inspections. right now, the travel documents of students are checked and verified. but homeland security is enacting new security measures. they include a database, which contains information on a student's college enrollment status, and that change comes after investigators discovered that a foreign friend of dzhokhar tsarnaev, the surviving suspect in the boston bombings, was allowed to loaf and return to the u.s. and not drop out of school when his student visa should have been canceled. a massachusetts funeral home says it is scrambling to find a cemetery that will bury suspect tamerlan tsarnaev. protesters have gathered outside the funeral home that currently has possession of his

body. the funeral director says everyone deserves a dignified burial service, no matter the circumstance. people angry about the bombings say they don't want a terror suspect buried on american soil. >> send them back to russia. let them do all they want over there, but not here. this is a disgrace. >> tsarnaev's family says it wants another autopsy. the first autopsy showed he died from gunshot wounds and blunt trauma to his head and body. police say he was shot during a gun battle with them, but died after his brother drove over him while trying to allude authorities. the parents of a 12-year- old martinez boy injured in the boston marathon bombing say he has a long road to recovery. they say he has hearing loss in his right ear and had 86 staples removed from his leg on thursday, but it is the emotional toll of the attacks that has them most concerned. >> fortunately, they had enough skin to put the incision back

together again and it's gotten better every day. so right now, just a matter of kind of regaining a lot of that strength he's lost and the mobility from the injury. >> hern returned to the bay area from boston earlier this week. he attended the warriors game on thursday night and hopes to go back to school as soon as next week. the boston marathon bombings have prompted organizers of another high profile sporting event to increase security today. the 139th running of the kentucky derby takes place this afternoon at churchill downs in louisville. the run for the roses will draw some 150,000 spectators and new staging rules include no camcorders, coolers, pop-up tents or any purses larger than 12 inches. homeland security just tweeted this morning they will also be posting see something/say something flyers at the event. 1200 local state and federal officers will also be patrolling the racetrack. officials in newtown, connecticut will meet again

next week to try to determine what should happen with the sandy hook elementary school. they held a meeting last night, but could not come to a decision. the school has been closed since december when a gunman killed 20 children and six adults. the task force of elected officials originally considered two options. tearing it down and building a new school at the same site, or building a new campus on a nearby property. the discussion is set to continue next week. the children who survived the shooting are currently attending a remodeled school in a neighboring town. gun control advocates hope to sway opinion at this weekend's nra national meeting. 75,000 people are expected to attend the convention in houston. association leaders say they are more resolved than ever to defend the right to bear arms. speakers include the governor of texas and former republican vice presidential candidate sarah palin. >> but here is the thing that nancy pelosi and feinstein and boxer, what the gals won't tell you, emotion won't make anybody safer. >> gun control groups such as

. the solar plane has landed in phoenix, arizona on the first leg of cross-country trip. the solar impulse touched down early this morning at sky harbor airport after taking off yesterday from mountain view. the plane is also scheduled to make stops in dallas, st. louis, washington, dc and new york. and if all goes well, it is

going to make a round-the-world flight in 2015. the bay area looks like a good bet to host super bowl l, either at the new stadium in santa clara or sun life stadium in miami. but the florida state legislature adjourned yesterday without considering a proposal to spend $350 million in renovations. the nfl told miami the upgrades were needed in order to be considered for the super bowl. while santa clara's mayor doesn't think the bay area is a lock, he says he is pretty optimistic. >> it is a regional bid. it really is a model for how i think we should work together on large events like this, whether it's the super bowl or the olympics, we can't be beat. >> the nfl owners will vote between miami and the bay area on may 21st. your time now is 9:25. it's hard to imagine with the hot weather we've been having that rain is even in the realm of possibility. >> it's out there! >> yeah, because we are in such

a deficit, you would think we would be jumping for joy, but it's not that much rain. it's a little tricky, because we may get enough. we are looking at the possibility of a few scattered showers. first, we'll see the cooldown. for most of us, that will be the notable difference for the weekend. the ridge of high pressure that has been in control of our weather pattern is going to be shifting a little to the north. we have a system that is going to undercut that ridge and that will bring back the onshore breeze. already seeing a thin layer of fog move into the bay. it's just crawling right up over parts of the golden gate bridge, the span at this hour. but it's going to thicken up. low clouds will be with us for sure as we get into sunday morning and the cooler temperatures will continue with sunday being the cooler day. today, we'll shave off several degrees at the coast. and our inland areas will get a bit of relief as well. mid-80s today.

. well, looked a little like fog, but what you're looking at is heavy smoke from an early morning grass fire as it filled the air along the san mateo/santa clara border. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> back now to our continuing coverage of the fire danger in the bay area this weekend, a brush fire broke out just before 6:00 this morning along

alpine and los trancos area, near the santa clara/san mateo county border. one resident tweeted a message to us saying the heavy smell of smoke woke her up in menlo park. the whole area is socked in with this low-hanging haze that looks like fog. fire departments that responded to the call included woodside and menlo park. coincidentally, just yesterday, firefighters in woodside and neighboring areas held a mock brush fire drill. right now, there is a red flag warning for the north bay hills above 1000 feet. gusty offshore winds and low humidity are combining to form a dangerous situation. ktvu's alex savidge is live in marin county to discuss this early start to the bay area fire season. alex? >> reporter: and because of the red flag warning in effect today, mike, the marin county fire department has beefed up the staffing levels at all of its stations, including the one where we are this morning. this is the throckmorton ridge fire station, where you can see

fire crews up here right now, actually involved in fire evacuation drill that i want to tell you a little more about in just a minute. but this red flag warning in effect for the north bay. we're talking about marin county, napa county, sonoma county, especially up high, above 1000 feet. that's where we're talking about. strong winds, high temperatures today. and i want to pan over here. we're up close to mount tam. i want to show you the real concern. the real issue, the trees and the brush are extremely dry right now due to a lack of rainfall. obviously, you can see you have a lot of homes that are tucked right up into these hillsides here. that would be a potentially dangerous situation, if you have a wildland fire break out in this area. there have already been several large fires in the north bay so far this week. and the captain at this station is hoping that this early start to the fire season will make people more cautious. >> the early fires that are happening right now brings a heightened sense of awareness and really benefits what we're trying to accomplish here in the way of public information,

public awareness. >> reporter: right now, a fire evacuation drill is under way here in this area. the marin county fire department is conducting this drill with about 50 people or so who live in the mill valley area. emergency sirens went off a short time ago. that will be part of the system that's used to alert people if there is a fire going on. there were also reverse 911 calls that went out as well. people will be meeting at a couple of different evacuation centers. there's a school down the hill and another of the evacuation centers is this fire station right here. that's why a lot of the people here, you can see them, have come up as part of this drill, come up to the fire station and sort of just playing out what would happen in the event there was a large fire in this area. again, fire crews, fully staffed up here in marin county, prepared for this red flag warning that, again, extends through 3:00 this afternoon. live this morning in mill valley, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. >> thanks, alex. wildfires evacuate thousands in southern california. coming up at 9:45, a live report from the southern california region on the damage to homes and the progress being

made by firefighters. new this morning, santa clara county prosecutors have dropped all charges against the contractor accused of accidentally starting the 2008 summit wildfire. the san jose mercury news reports authorities decided not to prosecute channing vernon. the fire took a week to contain. in oakland, 11 people are living in temporary housing this morning after their fourplex caught fire. showing you the video taken by a ktvu viewer shortly after 7:00 last night in the fruitvale district. that fire displaced eight adults and three children, but no one was hurt. there you see one of the fire trucks arriving on scene and the hoses coming off the back there. it took firefighters about 30 minutes to put it out. one resident told us the fire started when a stove caught fire while cooking dinner, but that investigation is still under investigation. new this morning, chp

investigating the cause of a fatal accident in santa rosa. it happened just before 5:00 this morning on river road. officers say the driver of an suv lost control and hit a tree. chp has not said if alcohol was a factor. it has been one week since the fatal stabbing of an 8-year- old girl in calaveras county. investigators have been searching the home of leila fowler, looking for any clues as they try to figure out who stabbed the girl to death last saturday and why. sheriff deputies say they have collected several knives from the home and are now testing  them to see if one of them was used in the attack. leila's 12-year-old brother told police that he saw a male intruder in the home. investigators are getting help from the fbi and say there have been hundreds of tips left on the phone hotline. oakland police are questioning a man suspected of having a gun at the city's first friday event. someone told police they saw an armed man walking in the crowd last night. police say when they spotted the man, he ran off and tried to get rid of that gun, but he was eventually caught and taken

into custody for questioning. no one was hurt during the incident. security has been tight at first friday events since the shooting death of 18-year-old kiante campbell. he was killed in february, just as a first friday event was wrapping up. after the shooting, organizers did make several changes. they banned alcohol from the event and ended it an hour earlier and made the event smaller, taking it from 10 blocks to seven. police in santa cruz are hoping newly released sketches could help them find a man they say groped two female runners. police say the attacks happened 30 minutes apart on monday night in the area of escalona drive and olive street. in both attacks, police say the man ran past the victims, then turned around, then groped them. the sketches are different, as you can see, but police say they believe the same man is responsible for both of those attacks. new this morning, the search is under way for a third crewmember of an american refueling plane that crashed in kyrgyzstan.

emergency crews recovered the bodies of two airmen earlier today. that plane crashed into a mountain range yesterday as it was returning back to an american base. no word yet on what caused the crash. members of a church in east oakland say an ac transit bus shelter has become a magnet for crime and they want the city to step in. the bus shelter is right across the street from the alan temple baptist church, which is on 85th avenue and international boulevard. church leaders say their security cameras were are you willing when a church member was robbed at the bus shelter in the middle of the day. we have circled it so it's easier to see. reverend daniel beauford says the shelter has become a cover for criminals. >> people are selling drugs, and defecating and fornicating right here at this bus stop. >> church leaders have complained, but aren't getting a response. ac transit and the city told us that clear channel owns the bus shelters and is responsible for maintaining them. ac transit also told us they asked officers to do extra patrols at the bus stop.

richmond police arrested four people as part of an effort to cut down on crime around the richmond bart station. new numbers show crime is not only up inside the station, but also in the area surrounding it. richmond's police chief is set to meet with amtrak and bart police next week to see what can be done to try to make the transit village safer. a san francisco health department is warning nordstrom customers they may have been exposed to typhoid fever. officials say an employee at the nordstrom cafe in the stonestown galleria handled food while suffering from the disease. anyone who ate at the cafe during the last two weeks of april should seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms. those symptoms include gastro intestinal illness, high fever, and a rash. nordstrom is offering free testing and treatment to customers. symptoms of typhoid fever can take up to three weeks to appear. good morning to you. a live look here over the

of a change going on already at the coast. today, it's going to be a transition day. we're starting out with a lot different than how we'll end up by the afternoon. it's due to this system here that by later today will already be over california. then it's going to shift off the coast. it's going to park itself there for a couple of days. the onshore breeze is coming back. temperatures are falling. i even have the possibility of a few scattered showers in the forecast. take a look. showing you at this hour this morning, by the afternoon, you can see that counterclockwise swirl now entering into california. over in and around lake tahoe, even the possibility of a few pop-up showers, maybe even thunderstorms. we'll be tracking that throughout the course of the day. tomorrow morning, we wake up with low clouds at the coast here. even a little bit of patchy drizzle, a possibility, good possibility. for the afternoon, you can see just scattered showers, especially the north end of california. but we may see a few build up as well, but the thing is, we are so incredibly dry. it's going to take a couple of days to moisten up the

a minor cooldown in store for the afternoon. we are following breaking news out of antioch. police are searching for the person who shot and killed a 38- year-old man early this morning outside of a motel. officers say the victim was shot multiple times. police have not yet released any information about the gunman. and now to our continuing coverage of the wildfire in southern california that's threatening thousands of homes. reporter dominic dinatali is live in malibu with how much that wildfire has grown and the work still ahead. >> reporter: absolutely. this fire, the springs fire in particular, is a massive fire. it's about 43 square miles. right mind me, you can see the lengths it went to. the ground behind me is still smoldering, which leapt across the pacific coastal highway. it actually went to the very edge of the perimeter of the point mugu naval base here. you can see how close it came to the practice range that they have there.

short while ago, four engines left the site, as they were deployed further north as the fire continues to rage on. 28,000 square acres have been affect sod far. but 20% of it contained at the moment, dedicated 1900 firefighters trying to control that. what is helping them is an improvement in the weather. overnight, we've got some cool, moist air coming in off the pacific as the wind changed directions. that's certainly going to help things. yesterday, it was hellishly hot here, 98 degrees at one point. that was certainly fanning the flames. but a drop in temperature of about 20 degrees actually is going to help things particularly over the weekend. i think tomorrow, it's going to get a lot cooler. just a short while ago, the calfire was saying to fox news that in fact the acreage isn't going to change in size, nor indeed the containment level. you've got the winds coming in and even though it's cooler and carrying a bit of moisture,

still quite strong. you can feel it now, maybe 15, 20 miles an hour in certain bursts and that's going keep the flames going and keep the firemen working through certainly the whole of the day, if not into the evening. guys? >> thank you for the update. we've got firefighters headed from our area down to help as well. thanks so much. a driver not yet old enough to legally drink is facing drunk driving charges after a deadly crash in the east bay. police say the young woman behind the wheel was driving the wrong way on highway 24 near the central lafayette exit. the head-on crash killed 51- year-old alvaro cruz of pittsburg. he leaves behind a wife and two sons. his family says he never drank and warned his children about the dangers of driving drunk. >>it's unbearable right now. me, my brother, my family. >> officers say they arrested 20-year-old annalise mckay of

brentwood. she suffered minor injuries in the collision. she is expected to make her first appearance in court early next week. police will be out in force this weekend, looking for drunk drivers leaving cinco de mayo celebrations. dui check points will be held across the bay area, including in san francisco, santa clara county and fremont. the national highway traffic safety administration says 38% of all fatal accidents around may 5th from 2007 to 2011 involves drivers who were under the influence. and big crowds are expected at several cinco de mayo celebrations today in the bay area. san francisco's cinco de mayo festival gets under way at 10:00 a.m. at delores park. alameda county celebration starts at 10:00 at the ashland community center in san leandro. time now, 9:49. only on two, we can give you an exclusive look at broken bolts on the new bay bridge span. our cameras were allowed to get up close to the bolts that recently cracked when they were tightened. those bolts were designed to help stabilize the new span in the case of an earthquake. engineers are now trying to determine if 200 remaining

bolts that were made two years after the defective ones also need to be replaced. >> we're very, very close to a fix. the expectation is we're going to be announcing through the toll bridge program oversite committee a design alternative next wednesday. and we are literally on the verge of that. >> next week, cal trans will also announce if the new bridge is going to open as scheduled on labor day weekend. the city of walnut creek is bringing in an independent consultant to take over the city's manager's duties in the sexual misconduct investigation at the lesher center for the arts. city officials say they now think city manager ken nordhoff knew about allegations against a former employee earlier than he admitted. four other city employees are on administrative leave because police say they knew of the alleged abuse, but did not report it. pope francis has named a new bishop for oakland. reverend michael barber will serve as the city's fifth bishop. barber was born in utah, but also lived in the bay area as a

child. he became a priest back in 1985 and currently resides in boston. barber will be installed in oakland's cathedral of christ the light on may 25th, as bishop of the oakland diocese. his predecessor is now archbishop of san francisco. graduation could be delayed for dozens of seniors at sonoma state university because of a registration problem caused by a computer glitch. according to the press democrat, seniors registering for their final semester were not given priority for classes and as a result, some seniors were not able to register for those last few classes that they needed to graduate on time. the university says computer software used to give priority to seniors during registration for classes stopped working and they say the problem has now been fixed. a new california set to open in roanoke park this fall is now hiring. the congratulaten resort and casino is looking for people working in marketing, guest services, security, and as dealers.
