crockett right now where a grass fire off cummings skyway is threatening some structures. we just got off the phone with the fire department who told us that two acres have burned so far. we don't know yet if any of the structures threatened our homes but one person did call our newsroom and told us she could see the fire and is worried about her home. we'll bring you more on this story as details become available and we'll have the very latest on our 2:00 news. news chopper 2 is on the way to the scene right now. a grass fire threatened some homes near the napa fairgrounds. jade hernandez is live where firefighters moved quickly to stop that fire from spreading. >> you can see a few buildings black below that block ened area, that is below the hill. afternoon. ked around 1:30 this we want to show you cal fire working here this afternoon. cal fire had already gotten flames under control, but not before the fire spread three

acres near combsville road and jack lane. right across the street from a baseball diamond and a school. a cal fire captain said that a homeowner tried to make a fire break his property, sparked the fire when his motor hit the rock. the homeowner had the right idea but attempted it at the wrong time. day. cal fire had fought three fires today alone, the biggest one in calastoga. fortunately, cal fire was able to work fast enough to keep flames from reaching structures or homes. >> there was an area nearby where we were staging due to another fire. we had seven engines a few crew and a few overhead. so about 40 people. >> reporter: captain westner said that if the homeowner had mowed in the among, he would have avoided the wind and high humidity would have helped avoid the sparking. we are live in napa. as i mentioned, we are across the street from a baseball

diamond. we spoke to a few folks who said that they saw the flames and the smoke and were extremely worried because it's way too early to see this many fires in this area. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. earlier today, fire crews attack add smoky brush fire near natolas valley. this occurred this morning near the san mateo santa clara county line. one residents said that the smell of smoke woke her up. men lo park department helped put down that fire. >> in east san jose, crews spend the day putting out hot spots. firefighters say there were a little flare. the cause that have fire is still under investigation but investigators say it was the case this afternoon. the fire in napa they believe that a contractor was actually cutting grass for fire

prevention when this fire started. mark tamayo is here with a look at the current conditions. >> if you are right around the bay or along the coast, you probably noticed, this the fog is making a comeback and that's balls of an onshore breeze starting to cool off the pay area. you look at the highs from today, you can see some 60s at the coast, lower 90s inland, towards fairfield, antioch and livermore but temperatures right down near the coast and right around the bay. can you seat reason why, on storm tracker 2. the fog bay setting up on shore. we had a thin rivet but the fog bay expanded in coverage that will continue to cool off the region. in addition to the fog, we do have this with some showers and thunderstorms developing, not here but to our north and to our east. you can see a few lightning strikes being detected here. a little activity moving through pardons of lake county approaching parts of sonoma

county, a few measurable rainfall reports in the cloverdale area. coming up, we'll take a look at the thunderstorm chances later on today, tomorrow and into monday. we'll have that coming up in your full forecast. >> see you then. thank you. people in mill valley took part in a drill aimed at preparing for a major wildfire. dozens filed into drop morton ridge fire station in mill valley this morning. it was one of two evacuation centers set up. this is at a high risk of a devastating fire making today's drill critical. >> i'm terrified of fires, so we think it's important to practice and know what we're going to do in case there ace fire >>it's important for people to at least start building a plan. until you do that, you don't really realize how much is involved with preparing for a natural disaster. >> the marin county fire department organized today's drill in coordination with the red cross. firefighters in ventura county battling the springs fire got a break in the weather today. cal fire reports that the

28,000-acre fire, that's about 43 square miles, is 30% contained. santana winds have calmed down and some moistures are coming from the pacific. 4000 homes are still at risk and evacuations are ongoing. >> you make sure that you get everything out but not replaceable. >> a strike team of five engines and 22 firefighters from newark has going to down to ventura county to help. tomorrow, there is a chance of rain there, but also a chance of thunderstorms. closer to home, firefighters are worried about lightning strikes in the sierra foothills along with erratic winds, which burned 40% of chico. it threatened ten unoccupied homes. >> we posted more on the fires around the bay area and that major wildfire in southern california on our website. you can go to ktvu.com.

now to some developing news that we are following right now. in san ramon, a house fire seriously damaged a home on lexington place near broad moore drive. the flames have not only damaged that one home but also spread to neighboring house. they have not known of any injuries or how the fire was started. >> in the east bay, one person was killed and another seriously injured. it happened on east bay highway 4 year byron. a blue subaru hit a tow truck and an a tree. one person inside the subaru was killed and another suffered major injuries. no word on what cause that had crash. in richmond, an suv slams into a house and the driver dies but not from the crash, gunfire. debra villalone is live. >> the 9th homicide is a mystery and it's not what it

investigating a deadly shooting this morning near the economy min at east 18th street and kalala road. officers found a 48-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. he died there at the scene. police did not have any information about possibly suspects. they are, those hoping that witness also come forward a man with a gun was arrested as the first friday festival in oakland was winding down last night. the oakland tribune says that someone spotted the man and alerted police who chased him down. nobody was hurt. security was tightened after the shooting death of 18-year- old kiante. organizers banned alcohol from the event and ended it an hour earlier and reduced in size. calaveras police investigators went door to door looking for who killed an 8- year-old girl.

leila fowler was killed. they got a number of evidence, including knives but have not determined yet if they have a murder weapon. we are make progress in this case. this morning, we began a second canvassing of the subdivision. the purpose of that second canvassing is to hopefully locate additional witnesses and or refresh people's memories of the events from last saturday. >> there was no official word. if the canvas turns up any clues, investigators say they have received a number of tips through telephone hot lines. a fundraising campaign is in its second weekend in san jose to help a mother and a daughter injured in a freak accident. the lemonade stand near the scene of the accident on lee avenue took in about $500 last weekend and was on track today to top that amount. it's all the brain child of a classmate of the 9-year-old girl injured along with her mother when a car police say was involved in a street race

>> it has been a deadly day for u.s. forces in afghanistan. at least seven americans were killed in three separate attacks. officials say an afghan army soldier turned his weapon on american troops in western afghanistan. the new york times reports that the gunman shot his trainer after an argument. five more americans were killed by a roadside bomb in a province. and another coalition soldier was killed in another attack in northern afghanistan. the names of those killed have not been released. israel is carrying another strike in syria after news report surfaced of another massacre. it is believed that israel was targeting surface-to-air missile. the u.s. has said it is

weighing whether to start providing arms to the syrian rebels. the boston bombing investigation continues to focus on asoarkth of dead suspect tamerlan tsarnaev, including his widow. catherine russell has provided limited cooperation and is being openly fold by investigators. they are trying to determine if she warned tsarnaev to escape after the suspect's pictures were broadcast or if she knew of the bombing in advance. >> the devices being built in her tiny little apartment is very hard to conceal with anyone living in such a small cramped pace and not see as many as six or eight pressure cookers. >> meanwhile, the funeral director holding tsarnaev's remains is dealing with protests outside of his business. he says no cemetery is willing to take the body. there are clues that the author of to kill a mockingbird is suing to get the rights.

dolores park showcased mexican at latin culture with art and a lot of food. the holiday commemorates a victory over france in the battle of puebla. and it has become a tradition here in the united states. a lot of blue skies for that festival in san francisco. let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo. >> for cinco de mayo. things will be cooler. we have the fog regrouping coast side and right around the bay. temperatures start to trend down. the satellite perspective, we can show you. this can you see that fog bank out here. that coupled with more of an onshore breeze start to cool off the coast also towards san francisco and oakland. you will notice some clouds up to the north, not the low clouds but some higher clouds and even a few thunderstorms, in fact, as you come in tighter, you see the lightning detectors to the north, you start to the south and east of chico. and a little bit of activity right now.

basically, this is dying off. a few sprinkles, a few light showers approaching parts of lake county and the eastern portions of sonoma county as well but mainly just some clouds for that region. as far as current temperatures, they are in the 50s in san francisco. san jose, currently the upper 70s and still some 80s to report. still ettywarm out towards fairfield, antioch and livermore last check reporting 80 degrees. wind speeds will be factored tonight and for to. can you see fairfield winds out of the west. sustained at 16 miles per hour. oakland out of the northwest at 18 miles per hour. fog will continue to push back into the bay for the overnight hours. and so with that fog increasing, breezy out there channels of a few sprinkles for your sunday and then we could be tracking a few showers for monday and tuesday. there will be some possibilities of a few stray showers moving into the bay area. first thing tomorrow morning, we are talk being some upper 40s to the 50s out there low clouds and fog. we could have some drizzle on the coast side. temperature drop, can you found on that for sun did day. there is that chance for sunday
