well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's monday, may 6th. we're following new developments in a deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. five people were killed when heading to a wedding celebration in foster city. we're live from chp headquarters with what the limo driver is saying about the tragedy. alex savidge has more. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. the driver said this fire spread quickly. it burned in the back of the limo in less than two minutes. five people were trapped in the limousine and all died in the fire. later on, the chp will talk more about the investigation. they plan to hold a news conference in their redwood

city here at 10:00. this group of women was heading out to a wedding celebration saturday night. the bride and her four friends were killed in this fire. this is cell phone video from the san mateo bridge. the limo driver, orville brown, said he realized something was wrong when the women said there was smoke in the compartment and told him to pull over. the san mateo county coroner said all five women were found huddled near the front of the cabin. one of the women in the fire was recently married. they were on their way to the crowne plaza hotel in foster city where the bride's husband was waiting for them to arrive. investigators will be examining

cause of a fire that forced tenants of an apartment cop complex. ktvu's janine de la vega is there now and says the flames broke out in an underground garage. janine? >> reporter: dave, things are back to normal here at this apartment complex. but we know that residents used these five extinguishers to try to -- fire extinguishers to save the car and keep the fire from spreading. we know there was a fire investigator inside the garage trying to figure out what happened. firefighters were called at 4:00 a.m. after a dodge sedan in the underground parking garage caught fire. the garage started to fill with smoke. another car, a silver kia, also caught fire and that owner drove out of the garage. he and another person were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. firefighters say it was challenging because when they first arrived to get in the garage with their hoses, they were backed by panicked people trying to save their car.

fire officials say there was no one in the dodge sedan when it caught fire. >> that's not really an unheard of situation. we do get these. there's a lot of things that can cause them. electrical systems so that couldn't be that unusual. >> reporter: more than 100 people were evacuated. after an hour and a half, they were allowed to go back inside. three people were taken to the hospital. two residents and one firefighter inplaing of chest pain and -- complaining of chest pain and nausea. there is five buildings here. they are all three stories high. it's relatively large. again, more than 100 people out here waiting in their pajamas earlier this morning. they are back inside and everybody is safe.

reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:05. an overnight shooting in oakland has left one man dead, another one wounded. it happened last night around 10:45 on 86th near dowelling street. one of the victims died as a friend drove him to the hospital. the other shooting victim was taken by ambulance and is expected to survive. so far no arrests have been made, the investigation continues. 14 boat passengers are safe this moving after a rescue on san francisco bay. the coast guard responded around 5:30 after smoke was spotted on board a san francisco duck board boat. the coast guard said all passengers were wearing life jackets and were safely rescued. the tour boat was towed back to pier 52. the coast guard is investigating the cause of the fire. 7:06. right now, caltrain is a tale of two trends, facing the best of times and the worst of

times. caltrain is carrying record commuter crowds and high revenue. but the rail agency must consider cutting service in 2015 because it still has no stable source of funding. they hope to buy some used rail cars to add to the current trains before riders are turned off from overcrowding. all right. 7:07. that leads us right to sal. are you yesterday ready to take care of the -- are you ready to take care of the folks? >> yes. we have slow traffic heading up to 17 because of an earlier crash at saratoga avenue. the crash blocking the left lane at saratoga avenue is being moved. but traffic is still slow. highway 24, we have traffic

coming out of the caldecott tunnel, approaching a crash at college avenue. getting to the bay bridge toll plaza, westbound, that traffic is better than normal. right now the traffic is backed up to the middle of that parking lot. 7:07. let's go to steve. all right. in-between clouds. there's plenty -- plenty to the east and to the west. pretty good rain and snow mix. a couple of reports coming in. steve bridges in the keys. a rain and snow mix at lake level. 37 degrees. they had over .03 of rain. that's pretty good. we have another band right off this area, san mateo coast, also santa cruz, that might rotate in. in between we get a little bit of sun. the low responsible for it, came back from the inner mountain region. just incredible for this time of year. better late than evinner.

it's more -- never. i think we'll see a buildup in the clouds and the sun helps to destabilize the atmosphere. one band coming in from the sierra and the other coming up from the southwest. 50s in the temperatures. there's that system in the sierra nevada, some of that rain turning to snow, then heading right back to sacramento. eastern solano county, napa county, lake county. you might be in line for some of that cloud cover and rain. this band, i think this is the one that needs the oomph in the atmosphere, a little bit of day- time heating. that's the one to keep an eye on for the santa clara valley, santa cruz mountains and 37 in tahoe. 50s, 660s -- 60s. even raining in southern california. there it is right there.

we might see a little bit later today. that band heading back. that one is falling apart. that one i think this afternoon could develop. clouds, showers, some sun. possible afternoon thundershowers. we want to get a run. your morning is your best bet. after today we linger on with some of that shower activity on tuesday. it kicks out on wednesday. there will be more sunshine as we head into the weekend. >> thank you, steve. cooler weather is helping firefighters gain control of a major wildfire in southern california. the springs fire is now 80% contained. the wildfire burned 28,000 acres in ventura county and damaged 15 homes. and four firefighters suffered minor injuries. investigators say it's not arson. a wildfire burning northeast of chico is now 60%

contained. they expect the panther fire to be contained on thursday. more than 6800 homes have burned. three firefighters suffered minor injuries fighting that fire. and a wildfire is burning in washington state. this is at the capital state forest, west of olympia. no homes and buildings have been damaged and no one has been hurt. a second fire has burned in lewis county, 80 miles southeast of olympia. the causes of both of those fires in washington state are under investigation. 7:11. a volunteer with the benicia fire department was arrested on suspicion of arson. police say 23-year-old robert mckinley was caught yesterday near the scene of an attempted arson. he reportedly had soot and ash on his hands, face and shoes. officers say they searched his car, they found evidence connecting him to other arsons. he's facing felony charges of

arson and attempted arson. we are following developing news about the conflict in syria this morning. syria now vowing to retaliate for a series of israeli air strikes over the weekend. reportedly, the air strikes targeted long-range missiles bound for hezbollah in lebanon. coming up for you at 7:15, the united nations' investigation into the use of chemical weapons in syria. it comes up with a different conclusion than the u.s. government. all right. 7:12. visits to paradise turn deadly. what lawmakers in hawaii want done. and cutting back on calories seems to be successful in getting people to eat less. crash dating!

it is 7:14. as the summer travel season gets closer, hawaiian officials on kauaiy are hoping to reduce the number of drownings in the first four months of the year, 11 people have drowned there. niece nearly triple the number in all of last year on the island. back in january, two bay area men were swept out to sea during a hike. hawaii senate is asking airlines to show a video on flights to the island, warning travelers about ocean safety. we are learning more information about the deadly plane crash in kurzic stan that killed three u.s. airmen.

two of the members were from california. they include victoria picky from palmdale and herman mackey iii of bakersfield. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. critics are expanding massivively to add 27,000 burial sites at the memorial. without more sites, they will run out of room. they say it's time to start planning for a new cemetery for veterans in a different location. we're now following several new developments this morning in that conflict of syria. syria accuses of us legal of launching -- israel of

weapons use. now nate toe is responding to the -- nato is responding to the u.s.'s findings. it's confused by the findings which is leading to more confusion in washington. we'll break that all down for you when i see you next hour. 7:18. in bangladesh at least 15 people have died in violent clashes between police and islamic protesters. police used tear gas and rubber bullets to break up the protests. protesters are demanding a new law that would require the death penalty for anyone who insults islam. it is 7:18. as a senate committee prepares to begin voting this week on immigration reform legislation, opponents say they will campaign hard against it. the senate judiciary committee

takes up the bill on thursday. the legislation was introduced by a bipartisan group of eight senators. the so-called gang of 8. opponents say even if the bill is approved in the senate, they doubt it will pass in the republican-controlled house. similar legislation failed back in 2007. new this morning, italy's former seven-time -- seven-time premiere has died. at one time he was one of italy's most powerful men. he helped draft the constitution after world war ii. crude oil prices rising again. this morning, the price of crude is approaching $97 a barrel. investors believe last friday's better than expected jobs report indicates more people will start spending again and that will drive up demand.

tension in the middle east is also driving up after israel launched that other air strike in syria. that's helping to boost gasoline prices. the lund burg report says nationwide drivers are paying a penny a gallon more. in san francisco, gas is about 4.2. around the rest of the -- 4.02. the area areas around 3.90. 7:20. well, a new study shows people -- shows more people are paying attention to the amount of exercise it takes to burn off food. the study compared calories and exercise. it found that when people were given a menu showing how many calories were in food and the amount of time it would take to burn off those calories, people were inspired to choose the

lower calorie item. when it just showed the calorie item, that didn't really make a difference of what they ordered. a veterinarian in california is advocating the use of medical marijuana for pets. he believes animals can benefit from ths in marijuana. he says his own dog benefited from medical marijuana after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. he used a solution-based form of the drug and people should never blow marijuana smoke into their pet's face. a dog attacked and brought down a suspect that the police were chasing but police shot and killed that dog. the reason why -- next. you might need to dust off your umbrella this morning. up next, steve paulson will tell us which parts of the bay area could see some rain today. good morning. northbound 280 is a mess. we'll tell you why and what you

in santa rosa, police shot and killed a pit bull man who was trying to run away from police on saturday night after police responded to reports of a fight at a house party. police say a 23-year-old man ran into the backyard where that pit bulldog was. police officers say they weren't able to scare off the dog and they were forced to shoot it. the man, by the way, was treated for bite wounds on his leg. 7:24. today, bay area animal organizations are launching a month-long campaign called the great chihuahua challenge. the goal is to spay or neuter 500 chihuahuas or chihuahua mixes this month. the east bay spca is teaming up with 11 other rescue groups to provide discounted surgeries for the dogs.

chihuahuas have been popular in movies leading to a high amount of breedings and some of those dogs end up in shelters. sal, can you help the drivers? >> i'm trying. highway 17, it's slow because of an earlier crash at sausalito avenue. it was in the left lane for a while. their fire department and medics showed you. they are everyone mooing it. it's usual -- they are moving in. alternate might be highway 85, it's not all that bad. maybe 101 getting progressively slower in this area. moving along also to the bay bridge. the toll plaza is a little lighter than usual right now. it's backed up for about a five to ten-minute delay. 24 is a mess. they just cleared an accident in oakland on 24 where that yellow indicator was. they just moved it out of the way. but it's beening whoing lanes. traffic is backed up through the -- it's been blocking

lanes. traffic is backed up. if you take that highway, you need extra time for sure. partly sunny, partly cloudy skies. we're in between two cloud bans. one coming of the sierra -- bands. one coming off the sierra. some snow, a few reports of a mix rain and snow at lake level. we have another system off the coast. so the combination of these two are going to give us a mostly cloudy day. even though we do get some sun. this will be the best bet until the systems work together. some of that rain, the raining in the northern sacramento valley as well. 50s on the temperatures. temperatures are not going too far. the low is going to keep things -- well, on the cooler side today. partly sunny to mostly cloudy in the morning. then a possibility of scattered showers and maybe a thunderstorm. one band heading up to mendocino county, lake county, solano, napa county and the other rotating up. there's the low, it rotates up more towards the coast. also i think the peninsula and

7:30. our continuing coverage of this weekend's deadly limo fire. the chp will hold a press conference at 10:00 this morning to reveal more of the tragedy. a cell phone video shows the horrific scene saturday night. five women, including the brian, were killed -- the bride, were killed. the stretch lincoln town car somehow became engulfed in flames. four women along with the limo driver survived. meantime, we're learning more about the victims of this

tragic limo fire. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us from santa clara valley medical center. you just got an update on the two women's conditions? >> reporter: that's right. a spokesperson says two of the women brought here are still in critical condition. now, they are not in the burn unit we've learned. so their injuries simply seem to be from smoke inhalation. they were part of this group of nine women celebrating neriza fojas's upcoming wedding in the phillippines. 48-year-old amalia loyola and jasmine desguia are being treated at the medical center. nelia arrellano and mary guardino are at may hospital.

ill and -- vandalism and violence. brian flores has more. >> reporter: take a look behind me. this is the remnants of the cinco de mayo celebrations here at the park. a lot of trash. there was a major sporting event from last night and that had people on the streets. for police we understand they made several arrests. rowdy crowds clashed with police here at east santa clara and south 19th streets and reportedly intoxicated people from a nearby house party were causing a bulk of the problem. police say rocks and bottles were thrown at them. cars were vandalized. even a vta bus was vandalized. 11 people were arrested, that's compared to 23 last year. >> the biggest issue we encountered last night started the approximately 7:00 p.m. when the -- when a large crowd consumed the eastbound and

here in the western u.s. you can get valley disease by breathing in fungus from dirt. a health researcher blamed warmer temperatures and drier weather. the fever has hit the agriculture areas in california especially hard. just last week, thousands of high-risk inmates were moved out of the prison after three dozen of them died from valley fever. we're finding out more about the death of a transgender berkeley resident who died in police custody in february. the death of kayla moore sparked protest, the alameda county coroner's office just released information about that individual's death. an accident. a pg&e employee injured

yesterday in an electric flash in san francisco is recovering this morning. there was an equipment failure as crews were fixing a transformer in the bayview district and that caused the electric flash that injured the employee. pg&e said the worker had minor injuries. this affected a power outage of 2700 customers. power was fully restored by midnight. pg&e's annual shareholder meeting gets underway. san bruno officials say pg&e should pay fines of more than $1 billion for not fixing the aging pipeline that led to the disaster in that explosion. eight people died and 50 others were hurt in the 2010 explosion. more than 100 homes were destroyed. 7:37. this week caltrans is expected to announce an estimate of the cost and the opening of the new

fan of the bay bridge. the opening was scheduled for labor day but that's in jeopardy after engineers found dozens of broken bolts. wednesday, they will announce how they will make the repairs. the 200 remaining bolts also need to be replaced. starting today, b.a.r.t. will be able to ban some passengers from riding on b.a.r.t. trains. burg will be targeting riders caught -- b.a.r.t. will be targeting those individuals causing trouble. passengers can dispute the ban if they are banned from riding b.a.r.t. let's check in with sal.

santa cruz. that's the one rotating around a low right off the california coast that decided to arrive, coming in from the inner mountain region. the wind is still here. partly sunny to mostly cloudy in the morning. then we go scattered showers, maybe some possible showers later this afternoon. it will not be as windy but it will stay cool and mild. get a good look at the low. very unusual to see this in may. march, yes. no doubt about it. but for may, did not come in from the west or the north. the south comes back in. so it picked up a little bit of moisture. 50s on the temperatures. i don't a think they were -- i don't think they will change much. some of this is snow up in the sierra nevada. then it comes back in toward sacramento. northern sacramento valley. now beginning to move over to williams and then heading towards lake county. some of this is on its way. that seems to be one ban in the

the palo alto carmaker qualifies for state environmental credits that can amount to as much as 35,000 for each electric vehicle it produces. the wall street june reports the credits -- journal reports the credits could amount to a billion dollars this year. the man behind twitter and square is taking a page from warren buffett's book. jack dorsey is auctioning off a lunch to the highest bidder. all money raised will go to entrepreneurship for at-risk children. warren buffett has more than 370,000 followers on twitter. he's warning. don't expect to hear from him very often. he's well-known for resisting technology investments and says he can't predict the future of those businesses as well as he

one man was hit with gunfire. we don't know his condition. police are asking witnesses to step forward. again, there will be a press briefing. it will outline police efcourts to stop the -- efforts to stop the violence. that will be held at noon at 1050 myrtle street. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:47. a friend of the surviving suspect in the bombing marathon bombing is expected to appear in court. he's charged with lying to investigators about visiting dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room after the bombings. two other friends are charged with taking a lap and backpack containing -- laptop andtop containing -- laptop and backpack containing evidence. the other spell will not be

created jobs. a pedestrian is fighting to stay alive after being hit by a car in the contra costa county retirement community of rossmoor. it happened yesterday afternoon. police say the car veered off the road onto the sidewalk and hit a pedestrian. the pedestrian was last listed in serious condition. the driver was also injured. anyone with information is asked to call police. and north oakland will hold a community meeting tonight to discuss a spike in violent crimes. dan kalp organized the meeting at the senior citizen. he says two homicides and home invasion robberies have people concerned. a deputy police chief, a captain and a neighborhood services officer will participate. 7:50. could the lights be turned back on at that historic dome theater in pleasant hill? the new plea to keep it open and why city council will make

limousine fire on the san mateo bridge. five women were killed while heading to a wedding celebration on saturday night. in two hours, the chp will hold a news conference and tell us the latest information. ktvu's alex savidge joining us. he's at chp headquarters now to tell us what the limo driver is saying about the tragedy. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning. this was, by all accounts, a fast-moving fire. it limb moi driver says fire raced through the back of his window and consumed the passenger area in under two minutes. the five women became trapped in the back and all of them died. the chp still trying to figure out what sparked this fire. they will be holding a news conference two hours from now here to update this investigation. obviously a lot of questions still out there about how this fire started and why those women became trapped. the chp spokesman told me at this point, investigators have not figured out what started the fire. this group was out celebrating a wedding. a bride and four friends were

killed in the fire that broke out on the san mateo bridge on friday. orville brown, the driver said he first realized something was wrong when the women in the back said there was smoke in the passenger compartment. them told him to pull over. by the time the limo stop -- stopped, the flames were killing the passenger area. they were trying to climb through the partition. five others could not get out. all five women who died in this fire were found huddled near the front of the cabin. a witness told us he drove by this fire and saw people standing on the side of the road. >> nobody was trying to get into the limo and i think they need help to get a -- i didn't think they needed help to break a window. so we kept driving. >> reporter: one of the women in the fire was recently married. they were on their way to a hotel in foster city where the

grabbed the fire extinguishers and rushed in the garage. it was already on fire. i guess sitting so long next to the car on fire, it almost spread cars, i guess. >> reporter: that man's father and another person were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. a firefighter was taken to the hospital. he was complaining of chest pains and nausea. more than 100 people were evacuated from this apartment complex and firefighters credit the sprinkler system for helping -- for keeping the fire from spreading. nobody seriously hurt. an investigator was out here earlier examining all of the evidence near the car. and he still has not come up with a cause. we will update you if we learn anything different. i just spoked my head inside the underground parking garage and the melted car is still there. just a grounds keeper was mopping una lot of the wet mess inside there -- up a lot of the wet mess there inside.

around 5:30 last night after smoke was spotted aboard a san francisco duck tour boat. the coast guard says all of the passengers were wearing lifest haves and were -- vests and were -- life vests and were safely rescued. the coast guard is investigating the cause of the fire. family and friends are mourning two men artheir canoe -- after their canoe capsized in the lexington reservoir. a 16-year-old girl and 25-year- old man were able to swim to shore. divers used sonar technology to find the others who died at the hospital. >> the visibility is pretty much zero. the sonar allows us to cover a much bigger area in a much shorter amount of time. >> no one was in the canoe was wearing a life jacket. they are looking into why the

at 10:00 this morning. they will tell us the latest on this weekend's deadly limousine fire on the san mateo bridge. five women, including a bride, were killed while heading to a wedding celebration in foster city. it's still not clear how that fire started. police in east palo alto searching for two gunmen who opened fire on a bus stop on bay road yesterday afternoon. five people were hit by the bullets. coming up, pam cook will tell us more on who police say was targeted by the shooters. scary moments early this morning in san jose where panicked apartment tenants scrambled to put out a car fire under the apartments. janine de la vega is live with new information about the cause. >> reporter: i just spoke with the fire captain, he told us that the fire may have started in the car's engine

compartment. they will no another -- they will no more later on. firefighters say at around 4:00 a.m., they were called to the apartment complex on sands live after a dodge sedan in the underground parking garage caught fire. the garage started to fill with smoke and another car, a silver kia caught fire and that owner drove out of the garage. he and another person were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. they are today to be okay. firefighters say it was challenging -- said to be okay. firefighters say it was challenging to get inside because they were blocked by panicked people trying to save their cars. we spoke to a witness who said his dad's car was parked near the burning car. he drove the car while it was on fire. >> yeah. it wasn't a large fire. just underneath the rear bumper. when he came out, he was not concerned it was on fire.

>> reporter: more than a hundred people were evacuated but about -- after an hour and a half, they were allowed to go back inside. again, two cars were badly burned. three people taken to the hospital. again, two residents with smoke inhalation. one of them has already been released. a firefighter was complaining of chest pains. he was sent to the hospital. he's in stable condition. fire officials say it's fortunate nobody else was hurt because at this apartment complex there's five buildings, they are all three stories high. a lot of people live here. they are glad no one was injured and that they were able to put out the fire quickly. >> 8:48. five people are recovering from gunshot wounds in palo alto and two of them innocent bystanders. pam cook is live in the newsroom with what police have planned for today. police will hold a press briefing to discuss the violent

weekend. >> officers say they were able to respond to the scene quickly after a shot spotter picked up the gunfire. it happened just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon in east palo alto near the mcdonald's on university avenue. ve people were shot, including a grandmother and her 6-year-old granddaughter. police tell us that the granddaughter and little girl were not with the people targeted. >> several of the victims appear to be gang members. i won't say which gang that is but several are gang members. >> there was also a shooting in east palo alto saturday night. one man was hit by gunfire multiple times in the stomach. we don't know his condition at this point. east palo alto police are asking anyone with information to come forward. they are holding a conference at noon today at 1050 myrtle
