"mornings on 2" begins right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, may 7th. three suspects are in custody in san jose after crashing a stolen bmw into a brick wall. it happened just a few hours ago on yerba buena and silver creek road. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is live at a 7- eleven on foxworthy avenue. janine, you just spoke with a 7- eleven ploy? >> reporter: yes, i spoke with the clerk. he's still shaken up. he says it's the first time

he's been held up. police came and reviewed the surveillance tape and saw the suspect was a woman, bearing a bandana, she had gloves on. she was holding a long revolver. police tracked down the suspect at yerba buena and silver creek. officers recognized the description because she matched the description of a woman who robbed two 7-elevens in april in east san jose. she dumped the car in those incidents at an apartment complex on king road. on a hunch, they went back to the location and spotted her. they chased her. police say the car crashed into a tree. the 7-eleven clerk said he's glad everybody was caught. >> i'm shared. a gun. a gun to my head. i'm scared. >> reporter: what did you do? you gave them lottery tickets and money? >> yes. >> reporter: police arrested 22- year-old sharon gonzalez. they say she was the armed rob

remember. there was a -- robber. there was a pregnant woman, maddie fine farfa -- maddie line farfam. the man was 25 years old. all of them were treated for their injuries at the hospital. it's unknown if the man in the car and that pregnant woman will be booked for the robbery. they are still investigating this incident. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:02. the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. this morning later today, the coroner will tell us the nails of the five women killed saturday night. ktvu's alex savidge is live outside an oakland care center where those victims worked. alex? >> reporter: and according to an employee here at the fruitvale health care center, all nine women riding in the limo on saturday night were current or former nurses here at this nursing home in oakland. you can see as we push into the front door, that inside flowers have been left behind for all

of those women either killed or injured in that fire saturday night. later this morning,ing, the -- morning, the coroner is expected to identify the women who died. we've learned the name of three of them. 31-year-old nerizo fojas. also shilled 35-year-old michelle estrera and -- killed 35-year-old michelle estrera and jenny balon. balon was a wife and mother of two who lived in dublin. we talked last night with her husband. he told us the two were married for 14 years and he says he feels lost without his wife. >> loving, friendly and very understanding, very caring, sweet person. >> reporter: balon's husband

said he was told by one of the survivors that all of the women tried to escape from the front partition to the driver's seat. the chp have not said why they couldn't get out of the rearers to. we want to show you photos of two of the survivors. later on this morning, the san mateo county coroner is expected to release the nails of all five -- names of all five women killed in the limo fire. when we get that information, we'll bring it to you. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. one fire investigator is looking at that fire. retired vallejo firefighter bill tweety had very interesting comments about the limo fire. stay tuned. we want to check in with sal, get an update on the commute, including the situationen 0 the -- situation

there. a fatal accident. how are things going? >> things are recovering. we've had slow traffic, as you know. we've been following it since it happened at 4:30 or so. westbound bay bridge, big backup, we had a backup, a stall, it's about a 35-minute delay before you make it on the bridge. we're starting off heavy at the toll plaza. interstate 880, northbound and southbound, that looks pretty good. but no major problems getting through the 880 freeway getting south to hayward. the northbound 101 commute has been busy. we had an earlier accident on 13th. again, the sunol grade still clearing out from that earlier crash near vargas road. but the traffic is recovering. let's go to steve. thank you sal. a lot of gray over the bay. this is moving out, though. you can see the last few

frames, it's starting to really accelerate into the central area. although it's wrapping back around, we could occasionally get some rain. you can see some of it pinwheeling off the sierra nevada. that could give us a stray shower or two. most of this seems to be favoring the sacramento area. cloudy to mostly cloudy. yesterday was the main prime time. the low was parked off the california coast. actually right off the san mateo coast. it's accelerating out of the picture. as it does, it takes most of its rain with it. we had a pattern as that low dropped in. we went from very hot. temperatures dropped about 25 degrees. we level off today and tomorrow and we start a slow warmup. but the low still hanging around. as it moves, it takes moisture with it. i will mention a few showers. could get a few buildups but the main energy looks to be east and the south.

a little bit to the north. we're kind of in that drier area. 60s, mountain view is in there. 50s for many. with all. moisture out there, if you do anything outside you will notice the humidity factor is up. 38 in tahoe. over an inch of rain at the keys. 50s to very low 60s all the way down to southern california and on the desert. even rain down there. you can see the circulation. that's where the low is going. mostly cloudy here to cloudy in the morning. a few showers but again most of the east and south of the bay area. 60s and 70s. held in check. not much change from yesterday's highs. in fact, maybe just a degree or two, kind of a mild, muggy pattern. clearing except for the low cloud deck. nothing too outrageous. nothing like we had last week. thank you, steve. cleveland's mayor and police have just wrapped up a

news conference about the discovery of three women found a live ten years after they were kidnapped. they say police have been called to the house twice before but saw no signs of the missing women. >> the police responded twice to that address, once in 2000 and another time in 2004. >> they also say a 6-year-old girl found in the house is believed to be the daughter of one of those captured women. amanda berry. police discovered the three women yesterday after berry somehow broke free and placed a frantic call to 911. >> help me! i'm amanda berry. i've been kidnapped. i've been missing for ten years. i'm here. i'm free now. >> police believe berry, gina dejesus and michele knight had been held inside the house since they were in their early teens. three brothers inside the

house, ages 50 to 54 have been arrested. neighbors say they had no idea the women were being held hostage inside that home. >> i go to the front door. she said my name is amanda berry. please get me hout of this house -- out of this house. >> we'll have more from cleveland coming up next hour. new this morning, secretary of state john kerry is in moscow. he wants the russian president to take a tougher position on syria. russia has been a big supporter of syria's president while the united states has supported the rebel forces trying to overthrow him. the u.s. senate passed a bill that would allow states to tax online sales. the sales taxes would be sent to the state where the shopper lives. now, supporters say that levels the playing field between online retailers and the brick and mortar stores. this bill is facing tough opposition in the house.

but president obama has shown support for it. 7:10. california's public utilities commission has recommended pg&e be fined $2.25 billion for the san bruno blast. it's the highest penalty possible and one that pg&e's ceo called excessive. one state safety agency also says the record fine simply does not make sense. the agency says any money pg&e spend on this tragedy should go toward making its pipes safer and not on costly fines. 7:11. hackers go wild. why several groups are threatening to attack the websites of major government agencies and banks today. and secret revealed. how new jersey governor chris christie has lost 40 pounds and what this says about his political aspirations. one time, i had to wait half a day to watch a movie. you watched movies?! i was lucky if i could watch a show.

it could be several weeks before we know exactly what caused this weekend's deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. the chp has not yet inspected the bumped remains of the limousine and has not gone over the vehicle's maintenance records. however, we do know about one violation tied to this tragedy. the limo was carrying nine passengers and the chp says the legal limit for that limit was eight. one veteran bay area fire investigator is taking a close look at the weekend tragedy on the san mateo bridge. retired vallejo firefighter bill wety has been directly involved in more than 500 fire investigations during his long career. like many people he's horrified about how the limo became a death trap. tweety is especially concerned about the fuel on the pavement. >> as you can see, it's burning on the asphalt.

korean land. south korea's president said last night if north korea shows any military provocations south korea will "make them pay." just yesterday, north korea moved the missiles away from launchpads which had temporarily eased some of the tension. today, the presidents will discuss their strategies on handling north korea and kim jung un . south korea is the 7th biggest trading partner for the u.s. and the white house is trying to get more countries to sign on a multi-nation trade pack. leaders hope that would boost the u.s. economy. they are also talking about nuclear policies. we'll discuss their options when i see you next. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. the chinese government denying new accusations by the u.s. that it is carrying out cyber attacks. the pentagon says it has strong evidence, some of the recent attacks on u.s. computer systems tied to the chinese

military on right -- operating out of big cities. the chinese government says the u.s. should work with china in fighting computer crime. microsoft has confirmed internet explorer 8 is being used in a series of hacker attacks. now, the group is targeting the labor department, the defense department, the fbi and contractors who work in the nuclear energy industry. officials believe these hackers will be collecting very sensitive military information. microsoft says it's working now to fix the problem. 7:17. we're also learning more about a planned terror attack in a small minnesota town. the fbi says buford rogers was planning to carry out an attack 130 miles west of minneapolis. details of the planned attack have not been released. but authorities believe buford was being aided by a small militia he formed with friends.

investigators arrested rogers on friday after finding molotov cook cocktails and an assault rifle in his home. the obama administration hopes to work are russia in the future as well as it has in the boston bombings case. they've been working together since the bombings. russian intelligence has shared intercepted phone calls shows that tractor-trailer had extremist -- that tamerlan tsarnaev has had extremist views. an air force officer in charge of a sexual assault prevention program is now facing sexual battery charges himself. he was arrested over the weekend in arlington, virginia. now, he's accused of groping a woman in a parking lot. the woman told police she didn't know her attacker and she said she had to fight him off. yesterday, defense secretary chuck hagel said he was

outraged and called the allegations disgusting. that officer has been removed from duty. governor christie now revealing he had weight loss surgery in february. he said he had lap-band stomach surgery at the urging of his family and friends. reportedly, she's already lost 40 pounds. he's often mentioned as a possible presidential candidate. but he said the surgery had nothing to do with politics. some analysts say it's a clear sign that he plans to run for the white house in 2016. state health officials are urging families to get vaccinated against whooping cough. officials say the warning is especially urgent for pregnant women or parents of new babies. an outbreak in 2010 was the worst in half a century. and the respiratory illness tends to occur in three to five- year cycles. whooping cough can be deadly in

infants. the death toll in china due to the bird flu continues to rise. four more people have died, bringing the death toll to 31 since march. the number of infections is also on the rise with 19 confirm -- 129 confirmed cases. u.s. health officials say the current strain cannot spark a pandemic but if it mutates it a bay area. look outside our window now. meteorologist steve paulson coming up next, he will tell us if the clouds will give us rain today. a country on high alert. we'll tell you what happened when this volcano erupted. good morning. traffic on 280 northbound a little bit slow getting up to highway 17. we'll tell you more about the morning commute.

a volcanic eruption in the philippines has left five mountain climbers dead. more than a dozen more were trapped near the crater. this was the volcano's first eruption in three years. off obviouslily, people -- obviously people are being told to stay away from the area. here's an image of the record-breaking star explosion from nasa's swift space telescope. scientists say the burst was eye-wateringly bright even though it happened 3.6 million light years away from us. scientists are now looking for a supernova. they think it's emerging from the blast. they hope to find it by the middle of may. san francisco's muni is determined to reduce travel times as part of its long-term plans. today, the board will discuss how to cut the time it takes to

get from one point to another on major routes. muni says transit-only lanes and using more signals timed for buses will be necessary. but getting those into place could be expensive and difficult to negotiate. muni says it needs to start working on that now. 7:23. sal, everybody behaving on 280? >> as a matter of fact, they are. i would say 280 northbound is a good way to start -- that's where we'll start this report. it's a little bit slow. however, we are going to see slow traffic on 101 as well. i would still recommend 280 instead of 101 at this point getting up into the valley. no major problems, by the way, if you are driving on 85 which might be the better of all three routes. as we look at 85 at the bottom of your screen, i don't see a lot of slow traffic. it's certainly a better day today -- today than yesterday. let's move along to the bay bridge toll plaza. that's backed up.

we had an earlier stalled truck on the incline section. traffic is backed up for a 25 to 30-minute delay unless you happen to be in the carpool lane. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a couple of sunbreaks but under mostly cloudy to cloudy skies. very mild. lows are near 60 for many. not much of a breeze. kind of calm. a puff of a west or something as this low kind of moves out. but variable on the breeze. some of it is offshore. it should turn westerly. a lot of the low cloud deck is moving. it will accelerate rapidly out of here. so some of that wraparound rain might clip us. 60 hayward, mountain view, livermore, antioch, fairfield. close for a lot of others. really mild, kind of a muggy day. relative humidity is way up. you can see the gray there. most of the rain is east. some of it still sliding off the sierra nevada. a cloudy morning to mostly cloudy. there could be a few showers. the low came all the way back from nevada, parked itself off the san mateo coast, now it's

it is 7:28. new this morning. pleasant hill city council has made its dome theater decision and it appears the dome is doomed. ktvu's brian flores is live in pleasant hill with details on the hours of overnight testimony that led up to this decision. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, tori. the community members that put up a fight to try to save the dome, they say they are saddened by it. after hearing hours of public system in city council chambers, the city council decided to keep the theater closed and not save it. the council meeting last night was packed. the public was allowed to comment for about four hours. at 2:30 this morning, the council voted 3-2 to move forward with development plans and eventually tear down the

theater. it got heated at times. when the decision came down somebody in the gallery shouted, how dare you smile, to one of the developers. we're hoping the s&p will reverse an approval to tear it down. they say the city didn't take into account the theater's significance and community cultural significance as well. but those in the city council say their hands were tied anyway, mainly because the building is on private land and they didn't have the resources to save the theater. we talked to community millions. reaction was mixed. >> a -- members. reaction was mixed. >> a sporting goods store is fine. there's tons in the area. i don't know why they turned it into that. redevelopment of the area is good. change is good. >> i remember seeing jurassic park here. but -- so when i heard about it, i was kind of sad. i think it's -- keep it

history. >> reporter: the developer will move forward with plans to build a two-story dick's sporting good store. they did not give a timetable when the demolition would start. as we take it back out here live, there's plans to renovate a building, right next door to the theater. that was once a valley fitness gym. coming up we'll have more reaction and why community members say they are not giving up just yet. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. now to our continuing coverage of that deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. this morning, later this morning, the coroner will tell us the names of the five women killed on way to a wedding party saturday night. ktvu news talked to the san jose man who was driving that limo. 46-year-old orville "ricky" brown talked about the horrifying moments before his limo burst into flames on the san mateo bridge saturday night. now, brown admits he misunderstood what one of his passengers was saying when she

first tried to get his attention. >> she knocks on the partition and she says smoke. they have got their music on. when she said smoke, my mind told me, maybe she wants to smoke a cigarette. i hear another knock. she says, smoke. pull over. there's smoke. pull over, pull over. >> now, brown is convinced some type of electrical problem caused the limo to burst into flames. he's now vowing to raise money for the victims and their families. make sure you stay right here for ktvu for continuing coverage of the limo fire investigation. we'll bring you all of the latest information on the air and online. it is 7:32. we're learning new information about what caused a town home to go up in flames on treasure island over the weekend. investigators say 29-year-old chad ingram was reportedly cooking some cleaning products to see what would happen. when all of a sudden, flames started to spread through the home. a cat died in the fire.

no one else was hurt. ingram was booked into jail and caused with unlawfully causing a fire. we're getting new information about a fire in hillsborough last friday that damaged certain -- seven homes. investigators say depom kosing materials may have started the -- decomposing materials may have started the fire. no one was hurt. but it caused a million dollars in damage. today residents in lake county could get some answers about a landslide that damaged several homes including this one. the landslide started in march in a subdivision north of lakeport, since then, seven homes have been red tagged and six more have been given voluntary evacuation notices. this is what it looks like inside one of the homes. the board plans to update residents the 9:15 this morning. the redwood city council unanimously voted to send the controversial pete's harbor development plan back to the

planning commission. the city staffers urged council to kick back the residential project because of substantial changes to the original plan including a decision to keep the outer harbor as a commercial marina. in january, the owner of the 14- acre marina evicted the tenants to wished on the 260 -- lived on the 260-plus slips on the harbor. well, the bay area came out a big winner with the announcement of this year's james beards awards. 7:34. caltrans engineers are using sound to test out bolts on the new bay bridge.

dozens of bolts recently cracked when tightened. now engineers are trying to see if 200 other bolts that were made two years after the broken ones also need to be replaced. they are using a machine that can detect cracking noises inside the bolts. so far, engineers say they've not heard any cracking. tomorrow, we could find out if the bridge will open on september 3rd as planned. the san jose police department is hiring. today, recruiters from the department will be at a job fair at mission college in santa clara. they are looking to hire people who want to be police officers and dispatchers. the job fair starts at 11:00 this morning in the main building. several other companies will also be there recruiting. and tonight, the oakland city council is set to vote on its new deal with the california highway patrol, the chp agreed last november to provide officers to help patrol some of oakland's most dangerous streets. the new deal includes expanding

patrols to four days a week. city officials are hoping to decide the cost and length of its new contract at tonight's city council meeting. 7:35. crews will soon be working to repair a big sinkhole in san francisco, one that shut down part of a very busy intersection. tara moriarty live in the city's richmond district now. that sinkhole is getting a lot of attention from the neighbors out there. tara? >> reporter: it sure is. one neighbor told us it's grown since yesterday. behind me you can see crews have arrived. it's sort of -- they are widening the area. they are getting ready to come in with the equipment and dredge it up and then they will repave it and fix the concrete and it's quite a lengthy process. over the past hour, neighbors have been stopping and taking pictures. they said it's just something that they haven't seen before. it happened around 5:30 last night. newschopper2 caught these aerials of 2nd and lake street. a neighbor said they drove over

the road, and then the ground began to open up. one man on his way to work stopped to fake photos. he said his wife couldn't believe it. >> i guess you have to count your blessings every day. >> reporter: luckily, no one was hurt. >> yeah, it's a good thing nobody was hurt. hopefully we'll start to look at our infrastructure a little bit better. >> reporter: crews inspected the hole and closed off the area, saying that a broken sewer line was to blame. the face of the sinkhole looked like it had been paved recently. it's located in the richmond district on the edge of the inner richmond and presidio heights. this intersection is starting to get busile if you come back out here live, people use it to cut through geary and park presidio. avoid the area. i would take surface streets to avoid the congestion. >> let's check in with sal to see how the other roads are working. >> good morning, tara. traffic is doing better in some

area, very low in others. the bay bridge has been backed up for a 25 to 30-minute wait. we had earlier minor issues on the bridge. nothing major but just enough to slow the commute down getting into san francisco. about five, ten minutes time that you normally use ahead would be a good idea. the morning commute has been okay on 880 northbound. on davis there was an earlier crash. that crash has been moved off the shoulder. it's not causing a dae lay. on the peninsula, southbound 101 traffic a little bit busy heading down to san mateo and in san mateo, the traffic is slow in both directions. as 101, we transition to the south bay, 101 northbound is the slowest coming out of the capitol expressway, southern san jose area all the way up into sunnyvale. let's go to steve. under mostly cloudy skies. a lot of low clouds around. leftover from yesterday yesterday. it's moving. gave us some rain.

knocked the pollen count down. it was really high last week. look at the circulation. it's a big guy. for may, it's pretty impressive. it did tap into rain, not only for northern california and definitely up in the sierra nevada we had an inch of rain. 50s, 60s, very mild. very muggy conditions. hardly any breeze. what's there is variable. still rotating off the sierra coming back heading back to the low. it's taking more of a tub. yesterday was right -- turn. yesterday was right over us. this one was favor the sacramento and san joaquin valley. we could get an isolated shower. low came back, parked itself, said i think i will go east. it's heading east. mostly cloudy, partly sunny late morning. and early afternoon, we to get rid of the cloud deck. kind of a mild, warm pattern. some rain will continue up in the sierra nevada. also in the sacramento/san

joaquin valley. over all partly cloudy, even though it's partly cloudy. a few showers, but i think really that's east and southeast of us -- south of us. generally we get the low clouds and 60s and 70s on the temperatures. with the relative humidity up there. it will feel tropical like. the system kicks out of here. we'll have light and morning low clouds and fog. but a little bit warmer on the afternoon temperatures. it's 7:40. tickets are still available to see the san jose sharks fight for a sweep of the vancouver canucks tonight. a limited number of tickets are available right now for game 4 at hp pavilion. the sharks have a 3-0 series lead and fans could witness franchise history. the sharks have never swept a playoff series before. well, the warriors are recovering from an exhaustive and heartbreaking start to round two of the playoffs. they led the spurs by 16 points halfway through the fourth

15,000. also this morning a survey shows u.s. home prices rose 10.5% in march compared to a year ago. the biggest gain since 2006. the dow up 32 at 1501. the nasdaq down a little bit, down 3. s&p, still in record territory up 2 at 1620. google's stock is down almost 1% at 854. it started the trading day in record territory. it was pushed higher after reports that it would start a subscription service on as many as 50 youtube channels. google owns youtube. subscriptions could bring in more money along with the ads related to specific shows on those channels. 7:45. a hack attack is apparently underway this morning. ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom right now to tell us who is being targeted and why. pam? >> well, the cyber attack is widely viewed as an attack on the u.s. government over

arrested in this morning on yerba buena and silver creek roads. janine de la vega is live at a 7-eleven store on foxworthy avenue. janine, you talked to an employee who was robbed? >> reporter: take, did. and that 7--- dave, i did. and that clerk said a woman caulked in and threatened to kill him if he didn't give her cash and scratchoff tickets. he handed it over. police came, reviewed the video and recognized the woman. police ended up arresting her and a pregnant woman and they have them in -- and a man and they have them in custody. police say they led them on a chase that reached 80 miles an hour. the stolen bmw they were in crashed into a tree and a wall. officers say they recognized the woman as the same suspect who robbed two 7-elevens in

contained sometime today. it started last thursday near camarillo springs and thousand oaks. the fire has burned 28,000 acres. it's now 90% contained. at its peak, the fire threatened thousands of homes and damaged 15 of them. yesterday, rain helped to slow it down. the cause is still being investigated but arson has been ruled out. the contra costa county board of supervisors could announce today if two more fire stations will be shut down. supervisors are considering a proposal to close station 87 in pittsburg this july. they could also decide to close an additional fire station next year. the vote comes after supervisors closed four more -- four fire stations in january due to budget cuts. as many as eight firefighters could be laid off. 8:12. a wild story, a man forced to hang onto the roof of a speeding car. that dramatic nightmare was caught on video by other

decomposing ears -- materials may have contributed to the problem. this landslide started in march in a subdivision north of lake pert. since then, seven homes have been red tagged. six more have been given voluntary evacuation notices. the board will update all of the residents at 9:15 this morning. 8:33. caltrans engineers are using sound to test out bolts on the new bay bridge. dozens of bolts recently cracked when tightened. now engineers are trying to see if 200 other bolts that were made two years ago of -- after the broken ones also need to be replaced. they are using a machine that can defect cracking noises inside the bolts. engineers have not heard any cracking. tomorrow we could find out if the bridge will open on september 3rd as planned. a sinkhole large enough to swallow up a car has shut down part of a busy intersection in

san francisco. tara moriarty is live in the city's richmond district where crews are there but still haven't started to make any repairs yet. tara? >> reporter: we've just learned that this project is going to take three days to complete. i spoke with the head engineer a couple of minutes ago. they are gonna have to repair the broken sewer line and then repour the concrete which you can see has been chipped away and then pour asphalt on top of it. crews are prepare prepping the area and have cordoned off the area. ground started to give way at 5:30 last night at second and lake streets. so crews immediately roped off the area to find out how stable this intersection was. one neighborhood said the sinkhole was grown since yesterday. people around here kind of anxious for these repairs to get underway. cars in the meantime can still get around the sinkhole. so section and lake streets still open. but you probably will be experiencing some delays over

fair at mission college in santa clara. they want to hire police officers and dispatchers. now, the job fair starts at 11:00 this morning in the main building. several other companies will also be there recruiting. tonight, the oakland city council will vote on its new deal with the california highway patrol. now, the chp agreed last november to provide some of the officers to help patrol some of oakland's most dangerous streets. that new deal includes expanding patrols to four days a week. city officials are hoping to decide the cost and the length of time to the contract at the st. louis meeting -- at the meeting. the bank of america will pay $1.7 billion settlement to issue a state over faulty mortgage insurers. bond insurers suffered big losses during the housing bust.

countrywide mortgage is accused of engaging in improper lending practices. bank of america bought countrywide in 2008. now, that does not end bank of america's mortgage problems. now the state of new york plans to sue b of a and wells fargo over their mortgage practices. last year, the two banks agreed to provide $25 billion in relief to homeowners. the new york attorney general says the banks have violated the terms and have not followed the time line laid out in that settlement. and williams sonoma has agreed to pay $1 million to settle charges. the house wears retailer, it's reported, failed to immediately report a product defect. the commission says the company knew about a incidents -- 45 incidents of wooden hammock stands at their pottery barn
