why were they taken? how were they taken? and how they remained undefected in the city of cleveland for this period of time. the questions still remaining after three women are found alive after being kidnapped approximately ten years ago. it's a story that people are talking about around the nation and here in the bay area. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. three brothers are now under arrest for allegedly kidnapping and holding these three women hostage for approximately a decade. tory dunnan is live with the new information on the women's condition and the suspect and the emotional reaction as family reunites. good afternoon, tory. >> reporter: just within the past few minutes there's a lot more activity on seymour

avenue. fbi agents are out front of the house, setting up a tent and they are searching for many answers in these cases. number one, how did these women get taken into -- get taken in and really how did this go undetected for so long. missing for years. they are back with their families. >> those girls, those women are so strong. it's -- what we do out here, what we've done in ten years, it's nothing compared to what those women have done together to survive. >> reporter: amanda berry, michele knight and agina dejesus. >> she said help me get out! >> reporter: police moved in after a 911 call. >> i've been kidnapped.

i've been minuting for ten years -- i've been missing for ten years. i'm here. i'm free. >> reporter: the women were examined at a local hot and released. police believe they brought amanda berry, the 6-year-old there, is her daughter. police arrested arearial castro -- arariel castro and -- ariel castro and two brothers. one neighborhood say she noticed a little girl looking out the attic window. just strange to see that and i said he has a daughter. people said no, he doesn't have a wife. >> reporter: they are looking for clues in a case with many unanswered questions. >> the fbi will bring every resource to bring the full weight of justice to bring

those responsible in this horrific case. >> reporter: medical attention was really the primary concern yesterday. so the fbi says they are pulling back a little bit of time with their families. but after that, they will want to know exactly what happened inside this house on seymour avenue. back to you. >> and tory, did anyone spot these girls or call police over all of the years they were held captive? >> reporter: you know, it's really interesting because neighbors have a different time line. police say that they are looking into a lot of different calls and trying to figure out if, in fact, they did go to the house. apparently back in 2004 one time they went to the house because we know that ariel castro was a bus driver. apparently, he left a child on the bus inadvertently.

so they investigated that but they never went inside the house. >> what's happening now for the three women? what's in the future? >> reporter: recovering. they are with their families. they haven't seen them in a decade. police are saying everyone needs to give them time, give them space. this has been a horrific ordeal for them. >> all right. tory dunnan live for us in cleveland, ohio. thank you. we're hearing reaction from jaycee dugard. in a statement released today through her publicist, dugard said the human spirit is resilient and the case reaffirms that people should never give up hope. dugard wrote "a stolen life" about her life in captivity. and elizabeth smart also says she's overjoyed to hear that these three kidnapping victims are now free after ten years of

captivity. she advised the women to focus on their future and get rid of the past of the smart's father said it's important for the women to know what happened to them is not their fault. >> usually the captors will make them feel guilt or responsibility. heaven only knows what type of nightmare they've lived for the past ten years. >> smart was kidnapped from her bedroom when she was 14 years old and held hostage for nine months. one bay area man knows what the families of those have endured. marc klass talked about the loss of his daughter. sal castanedo has more. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. marc klass told me whenever something like this happens and it comes to national media attention, it gives hope to the parents of other missing kids.

when news broke about the kidnapping victims being found after ten years, marc klass called it a miracle. yet he said the girls, now young women, are in for a long recovery. >> it won't be an easy road. remember, these are three girls that have lived under threats of force, intimidation and co hertion. they've lived in fear. they've lived probably in physical restraints. >> reporter: klaas became an advocate for missing children after his 12-year-old daughter, polly, was kidnapped and murdered in petaluma in 1993. the case gained national attention and helped change the way police look for missing children. >> in 1993, not one law enforcement agency in the united states had a missing child protocol. now virtually every law enforcement agency in the united states has some kind of a protocol to follow in these types of situations. back in 1993, the amber alert was not on the radar screen. now it's a plan in everyone one

of the 50 states. >> reporter: klaas says social media plays an important role in finding missing children. he says he knows that law enforcement might be criticized for not finding the victims sooner but says these cases are extremely difficult to solve. >> i think they did everything they could do. fortunately, for everybody, amanda berry took it mon herself to effect her own escape. >> reporter: now, marc klass said he thinks it's probably very likely, these women will avoid media expose sure at least for the short-term in order to heal. sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. there are stories around the world of current kidnapped. you will -- kidnapped children. you will find this at ktvu.com on the home page. now to the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge that claimed the lives of five women. today, authorities confirmed the names of the victims.

this as investigators try to figure out what went wrong. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live now at an auto shop in south san francisco with what one expert says could have been the cause. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. i talked with the owner here today of royal auto in south san francisco. he services thousands of limousines in the bay area, including lincoln town cars similar to the one that caught fire over the weekend. he believes in all likelihood, it was the air suspension system on that car that probably failed, causing the bottom of the car, the underside of the car to scrape the ground, ultimately leading to this deadly fire. >> you see that right there? >> reporter: yes. >> this was about to blow up. >> reporter: today, the shop owner showed us the air ride balloons that are part of the suspension system for the lincoln town cars. over time, he says those balloons can develop cracks and

actually explode, causing the car to bottom out. the owner says if that happens at high speeds, the fuel tank can be compromised and there can be sparks. >> whatever it was, it was a fuel issue. the only way for -- even if there's a leak, it won't catch on fire. there has to be a spark. the car went down to the -- you have a fuel leak, you have a spark. whatever it takes to have a fire. >> reporter: he has been servicing limousines for 20 years. up until six years ago, he did repair work for limo stop. that's the san jose company that owns the car that caught fire. meantime today, the san mateo county coroner has confirmed the identities of all five women killed in the fire. these are photos of them. nerizo fojas michelle estrera,

and jenny alon -- balon. meanwhile, investigators don't know what caused the fire or why those women were not able to get out of the limo. a spokesperson for the chp says they expect to have this investigation wrapped up in the next few weeks. back to you. >> thank you. we're learning more about the conditions of the four women who escaped the fiery limo. these are photos of two of them. less than an hour ago, officials at the santa clara valley medical center told us 34-year-old jasmine desguia seen here on the left and 48- year-old amalia loyola not pictured are both in fair condition. mary guardiano was released from the hospital yesterday. 36-year-old nelia arrellano was released on sunday night. developing news now. two lanes on the golden gate bridge are shut down this noontime because a newly-paved section of roadway started to

crumble during this morning's commute. the bridge district says there was a problem with new asphalt that road crews used last night in the area of the north anchorage. repairs are not expected to be completed until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. southbound traffic will be limited to two lanes until the work is done. >> reporter: an armed robbery at a 7-elevin in san jose. learn how the police caught up to the suspect. we're all learning about the weather. rosemary will have it for you. and how this sinkhole is linked to an old problem.

crews are out this noontime working to repair a large sinkhole in the middle of a busy san francisco intersection. it opened up on the richmond district on second and lake street about 5:00 last night. traffic is still being diverted around the intersection. as you can see, the hole is big enough to swallow up a car. fortunately no one was hurt and no cars were damaged. officials have not caused -- have not determined what caused a sinkhole but say it's near an old sewer line which may have

collapsed. >> it happened near the 100- year-old brick systems. we have an old system and this is what happens when the system fails. >> the hole is expected to affect traffic for a few days. officials say the repairs will take about three days to complete. san jose police caught up with an armed robbery suspect after a high-speed chase. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from the police department with details about how one officer figured out where to looking for the suspect and what -- where to looking for the suspect and what makes this case unusual. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: police say it's rare to have a fee armed robbery suspect and this woman used a particular type of fun in her crimes. authorities say that's what helped them capture her. it was a frightening morning for this 7-eleven clerk. at 2:00 a.m., he says a woman walked in at his store on foxworthy and held him at

gunpoint. >> i'm scared. had a gun. a hun to my head. i'm -- a gun to my head. >> reporter: what did you do? give them lottery tickets and money? >> yes. >> reporter: after police reviewed the video, officers recognized the woman as the same suspect who robbed two 7- elevens last month. on a hunch, the officer went to the location where the same suspect dumped a stolen vehicle. >> sure enough, the suspect vehicle rolls through. he makes spin ual contact with the person. realizes it matches the description of tonight's armed robbery. tries to pull in behind the vehicle. the it vehicle flees. >> reporter: she was in a stolen bmw. the vehicle crashed into a tree and a wall. officers arrested sharon gobs for armed robbery and -- gonzalez for armed robbery and evading police. she had a pregnant woman in the car and a 25-year-old man in the car. both were treated for injuries

and taken into custody for running a way with police. police say they were able to recognize gonzalez because in all of the robberies she wore a bandana, gloves and used a distinctive long-barreled resolver -- revolver. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. we want to go back to developing news on the golden gate bridge. it looks like there's still a problem on southbound 101, two lanes are shut down because a newly paved section of roadway started to crumble during this morning's commute. it looks like the entire bridge is shut down right now. now, there was a problem with new asphalt that road crews used last night in the area of the north anchorage. these are live pictures from newschopper2. it looks like cars are completely stopped on the span for the moment. repairs are not expected to be completed until about 6:00 this morning. now it looks like they are letting some traffic go through

there. southbound traffic will be limited to two lanes until all of the work is done. you can see the newly-paved area. possibly part of the problem. you can see the crews working also on those lanes to try to fix the crumbling asphalt that became a problem on the golden gate bridge. we'll continue to follow this story on ktvu, on air and online. the contra costa county board of supervisors could announce if two more fire stations will be shut down due to budget cuts. they are considering a proposal to close station 87 in pittsburg this july. county supervisors could also decide to close a second fire station next year. as many as eight firefighters could be laid off. the vote comes a week after an east county fire station that closed last year, reopened with the help of federal grant money. it's one of three that closed last july. caltrans engineers are using sound to test out bolts on the new bay bridge. dozens of bolts recently

cracked when tightened. now engineers are trying to see if 200 other bolts that were made two years after the broken ones also need to be replaced. they are using a machine that can defect cracking noises inside the bolts. so far engineers say they've not heard any cracking. tomorrow, we could find out if the bridge will open on september 3rd as planned. pleasant hill city council is giving a developer the go- ahead to there down an iconic dome movie theater despite neighborhood protests. the decision came early this morning in spite of packed pleas from speakers during a city council meeting last night. the theater has been around for 46 years. the developer plans to demolish it and build a two-story dick's sports goods store. >> we have a sentimental attachment to the building also. but it's most appropriate to continue on with the evolution of the plan as it was proposed and originally adopted by the city. >> the last movie at the dome

theater was screened just last month. it's a partly sunny, mild day around the bay area. we still have the possibility of maybe a few showers as we move through your tuesday. but what we see will be very limited. a look there at a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures very similar to yesterday. right now we're dealing with scattered showers over parts of california but not a lot here. we're seeing it in the valley. we're seeing it in the sierra. as i get closer here, notice we're fairly quiet out there picking up a few returns in the hills east of san jose. the system that brought us the scattered showers yesterday even a few thunderstorms in areas over contra costa county now over in and around southern california and shifting east. it's making a quick move at this point. the lingering showers will be primarily for the sierra at this point and for the central valley. we on the other hand will be mainly dry with maybe a few scattered showers for the
