officials tell us everyone was pretty much gone for the day. we are still montingerring the situation -- monitoring the situation. live in hayward, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. the head of the oakland police department announced he is stepping down effective immediately. ktvu's rob roth is live where leaders addressed the situation but police chief howard jordan was nowhere to be found. >> we are outside the police department where the press conference ended. the news was a shock to many in the police department. lice chf howard jordan announced he was stepping down effective immediately. he said he was taking medical retirement and officials provided few details. >> i am surprised and saddened to hear the decision this morning but i trust he is doing what is best for himself and

new chief. reporting live, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. >> our coverage of leadership changes continues on our website. we posted the e-mail the chief sent out announcing his retirement. read it by going to www.ktvu.com. firefighters in east oakland had to duck for cover last night when a bullet from a shooting nearby came through a window. just before 9:00 p.m. last night the crew from station 18 at 50 50th avenue had just come back from a call. police say someone a few blocks away fired 30 shots that ended up killing a man. firefighters heard the shots and some of them dove for cover. >> over here. for him to get under here, imagine that. >> everyone is running through the door. coming through here.

coming through here. >> police are looking for the person who did the shooting. in san jose police are investigating a shooting that happened inside a house about 12:15 p.m. this afternoon inside a home. officers say they arrived to find a man who was shot and prow nounced dead at the scene. the gun -- pronounced dead at the scene. we are learning more about the history of the limo involved in the deadly fire this week. ktvu's alex s just -- alex savage just talked to the man who owns the limo. >> reporter: he doesn't believe his mechanics missed anything. he said the limo was just serviced a few months ago and there was no issues. >> we are waiting for the

report. >> they were in charge for maintenance for the limo and today the owner told me that 1999 car was in excellent condition. he says it was last serviced in december 2012. a fan belt was replaced and an inspection was done. they checked out the breaks and the suspension system. >> what do you think went wrong? >> i don't know. i looked on the tv and kept coching, i couldn't think of -- kept watching. i couldn't think of anything. >> reporter: it is possible the car's air suspension system failed. sometimes balloons develop cracks causing the car to bottom up. the car belongs to limo stop, a san jose company. the company's owner brought this particular limo in for regular maintenance. why he hasn't talked to

asked for privacy. caltrans has the fix for the problems with the bolts on the bay bridge and ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar has been on top of this story from the begin and tom is here now with the issues and when the bridge will open. >> reporter: today was the meeting people were waiting for, for answers to the construction problems and if the bridge would open as scheduled. we didn't get all of the answers today. >> reporter: officials got an update on the fix for the problem created by failed bolts made for the bridge in 2008. >> after debating both options we are recommending option two. >> here is the fix. these two keep the road in place but this keeps the bridge together in a earthquake. since they are no longer useful they will place a steel saddle over each device and then they will add a hugephasia to the

new develops in the case of three kid natching victims from cleveland, ohio. police are charging one of three brothers saying it appears that ariel castro acted alone. and a home coming for the three women. gina dejesus as she was hurrying into her family's home. amanda berry and her daughter were also given a big welcome and the mother of michelle knight is on her way to ohio for a reunion there. police say ariel castro was charged with kidnapping and rape. they say this investigation is ongoing. >> there was over 200 items taken from the home. all those items will be processed. they were all taken into the custody of the fbi, they have yet to be processed.

>> police say pedro castro and onil castro did not know what was going on inside that home. based on statements and the victim's. jurors in the murder case of jodi arias arrived at a verdict today in arizona. >> we the jury do find the defendant as to count one, first degree murder guilty. >> jodi arias was convicted in the june 2008 death of travis alexander. she said travis alexander attacked her and she acted in self-defense. travis alexander was stabbed, shot in the head. the penalty phase is next. jodi arias said she prefers to receive the death penalty. authorities are looking for a man suspected of killing his wife and two daughters. they say he shot and killed his

on a law dealing with cell phone radiation and your health. they approved a settlement yesterday. the cell phone industry will not make the city pay legal fees for the lawsuit that got the law thrown out. officials are pushing for new rules that would prevent fake mobile phone charges. it is a practice known as cramming where unauthorized fees show up on cell phone bills. officials say cell phone cramming isn't a widespread problem yet but they want cell phone carriers to allow the blocking of third party billing to prevent future problems. jeanne cooper died. she played katherine chancellor

he struck a deal with prosecutors that will shorten his sentence and speed up restitution. the deal would shorten the sentence by 14-17 years and with 6 years served and good behavior he could be out in 4-5 years. it would end the legal battle and expedite the description of $40 million to victims. traffic is moving along highway 92 but a over turned truck snarled the commute about 8:45 a.m. the truck blocked all lanes in both directions for an hour. chp don't know what caused the truck to flip over. no injuries were reported. san francisco public utilities commission officials say repairs on a sink hole will take two weeks to complete. it opened up on monday evening at lake street. investigators leave a broken

video around 3:00 a.m. this morning. a neighbor called 911. it was up in flames. >> thick black smoke.
