the company has been collecting recyclable materials for 20 years. a human head has been found at a recycling company. we will follow this developing story and if we get new information we will let you know. to another developing story. this in hayward. s.w.a.t. is searching for a robbery suspect. ktvu's eric rasmussen joins us and live. police updated him on the situation there. >> reporter: they are still looking for this suspect at this hour. it was behind this dmv building where police confirm one of their officers shot at a suspect who had a gun. it is not clear if the suspect was hit and for the last few hours, officers have had this area surrounded. they have been focusing on an area along side a house. police say it started around

2:00 p.m. when police say a man was spotted with a gun. police say when an officer attempted to stop him he ran and turned on the officer with a gun. the officer opened fire but the suspect got away and it has been frightening for neighbors here, including one woman who was asked to get out of their house so police could search. >> it is crazy. you are used to seeing this on tv and in real life it is shocking. scary. you know? >> reporter: at one point police say they used tear gas to try it get the suspect to give up. they didn't order school lock downs but one school took precautions to protect kids with an after school program. i can tell you police are still very much standing by. we have seen officers with guns drawn. they say they have not located

the suspect at this point. whether he is still in the area is anybody's guess. we will monitor any developments as they happen. eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. in san jose police said today they have broken up a identity theft bring that targets hundreds and stole the life savings of a number of people. new tonight at 6:00 p.m. ktvu's robert handa is live with what they found after making three arrests. robert? >> reporter: the suspects in what shows police say one of their biggest identity cases is here held on $5 million bail each while investigators search for more victims. >> reporter: the north san jose neighborhood where the suspects were arrested looks peaceful but today three people are in custody for operating a identity theft ring.

police say the suspects stole mail to create or steal identities and confirmed 100 victims. neighbors said they realized how vulnerable they were. >> alone at home and somebody knock at my door and somebody will come in side suddenly. they can steal everything. >> reporter: police say the rest -- the arrest culminated by a six month investigation. they found drugs, weapons and items to create fake identities and counterfeit money. >> different component of this was money. they were manufacturing money. >> reporter: police are looking for these two persons of interest and acknowledge their involvement could mean more

victims. >> hearingthening like this is shock. -- hearing something like this is shock. >> reporter: investigators say anyone who had business with any of these people are asked to call police and to check their financial records. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police chief howard jordan surprised city hall by announcing he is leaving the force. ktvu's rob roth is live in oakland where they promised this change in command will not cripple the department. rob? >> reporter: howard jordan was not at the press conference but leaders say they were surprised by his decision to quit his job by seeking medical retirement. >> these are hard jobs. they are tough jobs. you know, i take howard at his

[ inaudible ] >> reporter: just before noon he e-mailed his notice. he said only i have taken a medical leave of absence. i asked if he was forced out and he didn't respond. neither did city officials. >> he made a decision in his best interest at the time he thought was appropriate and we respect that. >> reporter: since becoming chief he was under pressure, the department was criticized for the police handling of the

she a 23 year veteran. today he said the chief's department will not create uncertainty. he said they will continue to implement new plans to curve crime in the city. you can read police chief howard jordan letter on www.ktvu.com. look under hot topics. ktvu learned funeral services were held today for two of the women killed in the limo fire. family and friends gathered to remember neriza fojas, the new bride they were celebrating with when the limo caught fire on the san mateo bridge and a nurse who worked with neriza fojas in fresno. we tried to speak to her groom and other family members but they asked we respect -- they asked we respect their privacy. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the limo

to catch fire and tonight we are hearing from the owner of the shop the limo was taken to for service. ktvu's alex savage is live with details about the maintenance history. >> reporter: the owner told me today he is struggling to understand why that car might have burst into plames but he -- flames but he says that limo was serviced a few months ago and they didn't find anything wrong. >> the 1999 car that caught fire on the san mateo bridge came to bay area limousine repair shop. >> in excellent condition. >> the owner told me today he doesn't think they missed anything. >> no. i don't think so. they couldn't be maintenance related -- it just -- we don't know. we don't know what went wrong. >> reporter: it is possible the car's air suspension system failed. balloons can burst, causing the

limo to bottom out but this particular limo went through an inspection in december of last year and they checked the suspension. >> we just waiting. >> reporter: mean time he said that fire has many of his customers concerned. >> a lot of customers want to have the limos checked up. we make sure everything is good but we want to see what happened so we can concentrate what is going on. >> the limo, killing five women is owned by limo stop, a san jose company. i talked to the owner by phone today. he said he is fully cooperating with investigators. >> reporter: a spokesman for the chp told me it will take another couple weeks for the investigation to wrap up and at that time tail know what park -- they will know what sparked the fire. he said he has not yet spoken

san jose police are investigating the city's 14th homicide of the year. it happened around 12:15 p.m. this afternoon inside a home in east san jose. police say a man shot another man inside that home and then drove away. police are still interviewing witnesses who are inside the home. no word on the victim's name and no arrests have been made. police asked for the public's help to identify a man who burglarized a store. he broke into the t.j. maxx store on april 15. they released photos of the burglars. he is 5'7", wearing a red hooded shirt, blue jeans and black gloves. new tonight at 6:00 p.m., a woman said a road rage incident in oakland turned into a violent attack.

ktvu's ken pritchett spoke with the woman who was released this afternoon. >> reporter: because of what happened here on april 29 a lock is on the door of this community art and retail business. that is because its owner is just home from the hospital. >> he reached out -- he just grabbed me on the caller of my coat. >> reporter: he did not want to be on camera after her ordeal. she was bicycling with four friends when a man in a truck grabbed her. >> and then i struggled because i was still on my bicycle and the gas was hit on the truck and i was taken with the truck. >> i saw it happening. she was being dangled. and i knew what was going to happen. >> the driver of the truck

showed aggression. >> this ended up happening to be really bad. >> once i, you know, fell i watched the truck run me over. >> reporter: she suffered a broken leg. after she was run over the driver near this intersection sped away and it was 20 minutes later when the truck returned. they say that is when the arrest was made. >> reporter: a sex offender was arrested and charges. friends are raising money for her medical bills. she has a reason for coming forward. >> i don't want crimes like this to go unnoticed. >> reporter: ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. hundreds of people rallied today demanding more funding for child care programs.
