just yards from door park -- dora park. a fight broke out after a heated argument and the victim was stabbed several times, friends drove him to good samaritan hospital. he sealed off the area and spend the past few hours looking for that suspect throughout the neighborhood park and they arrested him just afte 4:00 a.m. at a community pool. >> he was out there in the cold for three hours and since we opened the door, he came right out. >> the suspect is from san jose and has been booked into the santa clara county jail. oakland's new acting police chief will hold a press conference and after this after the stunning resignation by police chief jordan, claudine wong is at headquarters right

now, claudine? >> reporter: this came as a big surprise to a lot of people and there is certainly a lot of uncertainty of who will head the department. there is a press conference scheduled to get underway in just a few hours. this press conference outlines how they can reduce crime and they are continuing the reorganization of how patrols are done and how investigations are conducted. >> the central organization to the investigative neighborhood to the level of moving in the right direction and we are working collaboratively with the compliance director and we are focused in our efforts to become more of a contemporary agency. >> you have to keep in mind, when it comes to the oakland

police department you always have to take into account of the question of how this city will find a new top cop now that police chief jordan has left for medical reasons and the answers to that question is unhere. >> we believe we have information under the latest's judges order we will need input and we have not had a chance to have that conversation yet. >> so while those conversations get underway, the focus today will be on this crime reduction report and that press conference was scheduled until the chief announcement caught everybody off guard. they have extented their stay and will talk about where they

more information and he is accused of holding the girls captive for over 10 years. >> reporter: real quick i want to talk about what happened in the courtroom and the investigation and as you mentioned the arraignment wrapped up for ariel castro. the judge set his bond at $8 million and you mentioned the police investigation how he held the women captive for roughly 10 years. new information from an initial incident report about what happened inside that house is being called the house of horrors and according to that report, michelle knight was held captive and was pregnant five times and when she was pregnant she would be starved for up to two weeks and punch her in the stomach until she

miscarried. when amanda berry gave birth it was michelle knight who had to deliver the baby and according to that source, he threatened her and said he would kill her if she didn't keep the baby alive, more coming up. >> listening to it as well, the other thing i thought was interesting and unusual is the kidnapping charge for amanda berry's 6-year-old daughter who was born in captivity. >> reporter: a lot of people talk about that, he was facing four counts of kidnapping and one of those because of the 6- year-old and police are not quite talking as much about the child because obviously she is a minor and they will be doing a paternity test to make sure at this point they are not

. congress is holding its first hearing investigating the boston marathon bombing. the pictures you are looking at is from a house committee hearing room and scott mcfarland reports, lawmakers want to know whether the government missed some key clues and key signs just before that terror attack last month, scott. >> reporter: they will hear testimony from the boston chief police and the states homeland security in boston,massachusetts.

you can see members of the community and the members of congress are speaking now as betty thompson speaks. the chairman from homeland security says he wants to know if all levels of law enforcement were talking with each other enough before the attack and after it. >> radical islamist, we certainly know this was foreign inspired. >> reporter: three people died and more than 60 people were injured. gascon is holding a press conference. in 1988, man was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his father. after several years he was released because of inadmissible evidence. last august, police say he ran

a red light and killed a pedestrian. he is now missing and believed to be in southern california. the search continues for an armed man who evaded police and somebody spotted a man with a gun near the bart station. when officers tried to stop the suspect he turned on the officer and the officer opened fire. he was not hit and he ran away and officers surrounded him for three hours but could not track that suspect down. some high school baseball players are being called heroes. they lifted a car off the ground to save a girl's life. the girl was being dropped off for an after school program after she put the car in reverse and ran over her daughter. they were able to pick up and

lift the car while the coach pulled the little girl out from underneath. >> it is like a reaction, you do what you have to do to save somebody's life. >> i feel like we were heros. we saved the day. >> the girl was rushed to the hospital and is expected to be okay. this morning. caltrans will test -- this morning, caltrans will test rods and bolts to measure their breaking point. they will replace it with steel saddles near the bolts to help stibble lice the bridge and the repair costs are said to be between 5 and $10 million and they will need 5 weeks to determine if the new span can open on labor day weekend. they are more concerned about building a safer bridge and they tell us it is not just

. police say surveillance video shows a man and woman going overboard last night. the crew realized they were missing after the ship docked in sidney at the end of a 10 day trip. back home in nevada they are dumping some in other states, they have some new problems this morning. >> it is the hospital for the mentally ill and they claim the hospital bussed out 50 patients

attending his own birthday party was stabbed and they are at dora park with how police tracked down the suspect after hours of searching, janine? >> reporter: we are actually about a block away, this is a nice middle-class neighborhood which is where the stabbing happened. the suspect, a partygoer was found hiding about a block away. they received a 911 call that a man celebrating his birthday was stabbed multiple times and that the suspect had fled. they canvassed the neighborhood and focused on dora park where they believed the suspect was hiding. neighbors heard the commotion. >> i thought i heard screaming and i had the video game going, but right as i stopped and paused the video game, it

stopped. we came out about an hour ago and the street was taped off and they had cops up there and up there. >> reporter: police used infrared equipment to help locate the suspect and police arrested 20-year-old peter brunette for assault with a deadly weapon. we are told the suspect had critical injuries but now police tell us the victim is expected to survive. coming up on mornings on 2, we will tell you what neighbors are telling us about that particular house and what happens there. reporting live janine de la vega, 632 ktvu channel 2 morning news. will it be life or the death penalty. jurors will start considering those two options in the jodi arias trial. she was accused of first-degree
