good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's thursday, may 9th. a south bay man, celebrating his 21st birthday gets stabbed at his own party. ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose where she's talking to neighbors living near the attack. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. neighbors have told me that police have been called to this house behind me several times in the past couple of months for disturbances and they are not happy about this latest incident. police say a man was stabbed multiple times at 1:15 this morning. he was celebrating his 21st birthday at a home on cutter drive in the came preian area of san jose. he's taken to the hospital -- cambrian area of san jose. he was taken to the hospital. he's expected to survive. after interviewing witnesses, police started to search doerr park.

they found the suspect hiding in the community pool area. neighbors heard the commotion. >> that's not cool. that's not a good birthday at all. it's shocking. >> reporter: and he was hiding close by. >> right down the street, like in a park even. you would think he would be smarter. >> reporter: we're told the suspect knew the victim. he didn't crash the party. we don't know what the fight was about. police have identified him as 20-year-old peter brunetto of san jose. he surrendered and is expected to be booked for assault with a deadly weapon. coming up we're gonna try to talk to the people in the house to figure out what might have happen and started this fight. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. about 90 minutes ago, we went live to a cleveland, ohio courtroom where ariel castro

was arraigned. he is kidnapped of kidnapping and raping those three women. this morning, the judge set his bill at 8 million. we're also learning more about the conditions the three women were kept in. police say chains and ropes were found in the house and used to keep them locked up. they say castro would prevend to leave the house and if he caught them doing anything suspicious, he would punishment. police say after a while, they were so afraid what he would do, they stopped trying to escape. later this morning, we'll go live to ohio for more. the state is threatening to strip the license of a milpitas child center. the facility is accused of improper behavior. there was an unannounced safety

someone agreed to do it. a chase ended when a suspect rammed a land rover he was driving in mill valley. the suspect clipped a police officer with the car's mirror and tried to hit another officer but they were not seriously hurt. the paper says no children were on the bus. the bus driver was treated for minor injuries. the suspect is being treated for a broken leg. this morning, caltrans will test steel rods from the bay bridge. it's part of the investigation into the 32 bolts that snapped during construction. today's tests involve rods being hammered an stretch stretched -- hammered and stretched. the repair cost, between $5 million to $10 million. caltrans will need a few weeks

before it can determine if the new span can open by labor day. and commuters say they are more concerned about building a safer bridge rather than opening it on time. they told the contra costa times that safety is not just a top priority it's the only one. they say they are confident the construction problems will get resolved but they urge administrators to take their time to do the job right. 7:05. today is bike to work day. tara moriarty is live where an energizer station has been set up to help people going. tara? >> reporter: in half be a hour, this event kicks off. you will see droves of cyclists across the golden gate bridge and the bay area. they have an energizer shop set up and a bicycle owner who is

helping with maintenance and filling tires with air. they also have things you can charge your batteries with. this is a towel for men. when you get to work when you are sweaty, you don't have time to take a shower. these are all things being offered at the rest stop. the san francisco bike coalition hosts this each year. it's set up 100 energizer stations across the area. 26 in southern california alone. we spoke to one novato man who was dubbed the commuter of the year. he bikes 40 miles round trip to work every day. >> at work you are a lot more relaxed and the stress level is definitely reduced. and you do a great thing for the environment as well. >> reporter: then you don't have to squeeze in a workout. >> exactly. it's really efficient. >> reporter: now, organizers have been offering urban bike safety classes, workshops, parties, raffles and giveaways. mechanics from local bike shops

up. there are no problems on the bridge. a this is slow traffic. if you can consider slow traffic a problem, we have a problem. northbound 101 approach el the 80 split. the traffic in san francisco looks good. we're also looking at the skyway there near the hall of justice. traffic in general looks good. san jose, northbound 101 traffic and 280 not all that bad. the santa clara valley commute has been good. we've had very slow traffic on 580. 580 has been the commute with a lot of fender-benders, stalled vehicles. it's very slow coming out of the altamont pass into livermore. let's go to steve. a very good morning. mostly cloudy. concord says clear. a south wind at 10 malls. a lot going on. our big low is moving off bringing snow to the rockies there. this is moving and getting

pushed along by this weak front. there's a lot of fog away from the coast. yesterday, we had the higher clouds, 50 walnut creek. a little chill in the morning. 52 half moon bay. san francisco, overcast to san jose, 54. antioch at 52. fairfield's in there. fairfield had gusts to 25 miles an hour from the southwest. so the delta breeze is in place. oakland, west wind, sfo has a west wind. in fact, almost every location showing a sea breeze all the way to livermore and napa. san jose a little bit of a northwest. a lot going on. there's three lows to show you. we'll start in the east where they have more rain in new york. they had the flooding yesterday. this is a stalled out low. this needs to be bumped along. might get helped along. look at that line of severe weather. it looks like it's falling apart. and then the low we just had is giving snow. you can see to the west of denver. so they continue to get snow. we hardly get anything. we had a little bit of rain yesterday. that portion of the cloud deck

a lot of low clouds in place. a cool, breezy day. temperatures won't warm up too much. maybe a little bit far enough away from the coast. 60s, low 70s. 7:14. another deadly fire in a garment factory in bangladesh. eight people have been confirmed dead in the fire in an 11-story building that houses a sweater factory. the fire broke out after most of the workers had gone home for the day. all of the dead were found in a stairwell apparently trying to get out of the building. the fire director said if they had stayed on the upper floors. they would have likely survived the slow-spreading fire. meanwhile, the death toll from the collapse of the other garment factory building earlier this month has now hit 930. a search continues off the coast of australia for two missing passengers from a carnival cruise ship. police say surveillance video

shows the 30-year-old man and 27-year-old woman going overboard last night. the crew realized the couple was missing after the ship docked in sydney this morning at the end of a ten-day trip. right now in washington, d.c., a congressional panel is investigating whether the government dropped the ball before the boston bombing attacks. ktvu's scott macfarlane in our washington, d.c. newsroom. he will take us inside that hearing room. scott? >> reporter: let's do that right now. let's go live inside the hearing room. the panel includes former senator joe leiberman. you see him there. to the right is boston's police commissioner who just told the panel he doesn't endorse any actions that move boston in a police state mentally. but the chairman says there needs to be an investigation into whether the government missed any signs, any clues about the tsarnaev brothers before the bombing. >> before the bombing, were you aware that based on this

russian intelligence, that the fbi opened an investigation into tamerlan? >> we were not aware of that. >> would you like to have known about that? >> yes. >> before the bombing, were you aware that mr. tamerlan traveled to the chechyan region? >> no would you like to have known that? >> yes. >> reporter: there were boston police members on a joint terrorism task force it was revealed a few moments ago. it became known that the boston police members on the task force didn't have that information. live in d.c., scott macfarlane, ktvu channel 2 news. katherine russell, the widow of the boston marathon bombing suspect who died, has expanded her legal team by adding a criminal lawyer with experience defending terrorism cases. one of russell's other lawyers say she's not been charged with

any crime. the attorney says russell had no reason to suspect that her husband and brother were involved in the bombings. san jose police want your help this morning. they are trying to determine if two crimes are connected. last week, police arrested pedro guzman on charges he broke in and robbed two homes. police received a report on a peeping tom incident in this same area the day before one of those burglaries. the police want to know if you have any information. if you do call them. the voice of charlie brown has been sentenced to at least eight months in rehab. during sentencing the judge used one of charlie brown's famous lines. >> do you adhere to the terms? if you do, you won't go to prison. don't be a blockhead. >> peter robbins 'punishment for threatening to kill hess ex- girlfriend and the doctor who

performed her breast- enhancement surgery. he wanted a refund for the surgery because the two had gotten into a fight. >> i realize this is the first step to becoming the fun, loving person i once was and hope to become again. congress has come up with a backup plan just in case lawmakers and the president can't ahe grow on the debt limit. the republican-controlled house is moving american bomb holders and those on social security to the front of the line to get payments. the u.s. reached the current debt limit of 16.4 trillion in january. but congress allowed the treasury department to borrow enough money to meet obligations. that authority expires on the 18th. however, the state of california is reportedly rolling in cash. the state controller's office says california collected more than $15 billion in revenue last month.

rescue crews are calling it a miraculous landing. the pilot and a passenger of a small helicopter walked away without injuries after making a crash landing in downtown honolulu yesterday. the chopper was on a photography flight when it lost power 3,000 feet in the air. one parked car was damaged during the landing. the pilot says she's glad no one was hurt. but she's disappointed she ruined her brand-new chopper. 7:23. a chicago cubs' fan has now tragically died after choking while eating a hot dog at wrigley field. it happened on sunday during the game. the 28-year-old middle school teacher started to choke and passed out during the national anthem and never regained

consciousness. she was kept on life support long enough to donate her organs. doctors say her heart may be used to save of life of a 14- year-old girl who desperately needs a transplant. a teenager in utah accused of fate tally punching a soccer referee during a game has been charged with homicide by assault. police say the 17-year-old punched ricardo portillo in the face after he made a call the teenager got angry over it. portillo suffered serious injuries and died saturday after weeing in a coma for a week. prosecutors want to put him on high schools trial for a week -- put him on trial for a week. sal? >> there was a highway 4 at bailey road at baypoint there. traffic is slow after that. it's been slow from antioch.

it's been kind of a generally slow commute coming over the hill to concord. 680 is slowing down in pleasant hill on the way to walnut creek. 24 is moderate between walnut creek and oakland. moving along to look at the toll plaza which has been probably the slowest day of the week. i would say it's about a 30- minute delay at the toll plaza. it should start getting better at 8:00 if things go according to what they normally do. right now, it's certainly slow. on the bridge itself, it's not all that bad. 580 has not been a shrinking violet. it's featuring into dublin now. if you are driving to the santa clara valley, the slowest traffic is 101 between capital expressway and trimble. northbound 280 not too bad and 85 is just moderate. thank you, sal. low clouds, plenty to go around. yesterday we had the combination of the low and high

clouds. even the light rain. it will be sunny sooner today. it will be sunny and breezy. there's a west lind in place. water temperatures have come up. a couple of weeks ago, they were 48 to 49, 50. now they are 51, 54. still cold but not as cold. lows are 50s. temperatures held in check. a couple of things going on. a little front keeping the fog in place. so morning fog, sunny, breezy. a couple of high clouds but nothing compared to like yesterday. mainly 50s and 60s, well, well, inland locations will bump to the upper 60s. i think 70 to 72. temperatures then tonight will cool right back down. we'll have more on the way of fog and low cloud. it will burn off sooner. that means warmer temperatures especially away from the coast over the weekend. new details from ohio about the decade-long kidnapping of three women in cleveland. the police are saying what the women told them during some

7:29. continuing coverage now of the kidnapping case out of cleveland, ohio. earlier this morning, 52-year- old ariel castro made his first court appearance. tory dunnan is live in ohio with the charges he's facing and also new details about the ten years these women spent in captivity. good morning, tory. >> reporter: good morning, tori. this arraignment hearing wrapped up this morning. ariel castro has been moved from the city yale to the county jail. the further along this investigation moves, the more we're learning about what happened inside the house. ariel castro colt his head down as he made his first appearance before a judge. >> kidnapping and rape on the

first, second and third. >> reporter: a total of $8 million bond. castro brothers were unarraigned on unrelated misdemeanor charges. police say there's no evidence they were involved in the alleged kidnapping. a terrifying picture is emerging of how three young women spent roughly a decade captive in a cleveland home. >> what they told law enforcement was key. that will be a key part in the case. >> reporter: according to an initial incident, michelle knight said she became pregnant at least five times but was starved and punched in the stomach until she miscarried but when amanda berry became pregnant, a police source says castro forced her to deliver the baby. berry's grand mother says she's looking forward to meeting the little girl. >> that's my great-grandchild. it's part of her. part of our lives. >> reporter: a law enforcement

source says the three women were kept in separate wombs and came to rely on each other for survival. over the years they saw their families on television praying for their safe return. and tori, we've heard from ariel castro's attorney that he was on suicide watch at the city jail. as far as three women go, the latest information is that michele knight still remains in the hospital. hospital officials say ther condition is good -- her condition is good. >> all right. thank you. 7:32. in just two hours from right now, oakland's new acting police chief will hold a news conference, all of this comes as yesterday's stunning resignation by chief howard jordan which really shook up city hall. claudine wong is live outside of oakland city hall right now. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. we've moved over here. there's an earlier press conference scheduled to start here. the mayor expected to be here.

now, we know she will talk about bike-to-work day in city hall. but in the wake of the chief's surprisement announcement he's -- surprise announcement he's stepping down and in focusing on crime reduction, it's hard to focus on anything else. there's a press conference that town about the bratton report, outlining -- to talk about the bratton report, outlining crime reduction. >> the decentralization of our investigative unit to the neighborhood level. we have a lot of things in progress, i believe, that we're moving in the right direction. we're working collaboratively with the compliance director, the monitor and we're all focused and continuing our efforts to become more of a contemporary agency. >> when you talk about those kinds of changes, you also have

to talk about leadership. you just heard the acting chief talk about the monitor and the compliance director. chief howard jordan when he was leading the charge within the department, it was kind of a done teal he would head all of these changes up. but now that he's stepping down for medical reasons, it's not clear and the mayor when asked yesterday didn't have the answers. >> it's an interesting question that we're actually not sure. we believe we have the highest authority. but i also know under the latest order from the jim they will probably want input. that's why we're not talking about that because we haven't had the chance to have that conversation with them yet. >> reporter: we're heaping to ask her this -- hoping to ask her this morning when she arrives if the changes will take place, if they've already in part taken place. during yesterday's press conference she was anxious to have people hear about the bratton report. the department has seen a lot of changes so far. we'll keep an eye on things

dramatically change the immigration system in the u.s. these are live pictures of the committee session underway right now. the immigration reform bill could put 11 million immigrants living illegally in this country on a path to u.s. citizenship. it would cover border security and workplace enforcement. it's designed to change visa programs to attract more highly- skilled foreigners. but it would also have provisions for immigrants to work in lower skilled jobs including construction, janitorial and retail jobs. 7:36. new this morning, one year after a hit-and-run crash almost took his life in san francisco, a homeless man is now getting ready to take a crucial step in his recovery. brian floor vess is live in -- flores is live in oakland where the man will soon fly to his hometown to be with his family. it's quite a story. >> reporter: it is quite a story. good morning. we're live at oakland airport. behind me is a learjet that

will take a homeless victim back home. this is a homecoming for him. but also a crucial one in terms of his recovery. we first told you about selester. he's a homeless man frequently stein in the north beach area. he was very well-liked in the community. in may of last year, he was hit by a late model suv. that driver has not been found but for les he's been recovering going from hospital to going. he's suffered many injuries. according to tear cakers, he can't talk -- caretakers, he can't talk. he's expected to go back to columbus, georgia in this jet. we spoke to the pilot who said cases like this never get old. >> this is the most rewarding job that i've ever had in aviation. and i think everyone else working here would say the same thing. we're fighting a good fight, getting people home, getting

them to another facility for better care. >> reporter: name and friends, high school friends heard about the story and they were able to raise more than $17,000 for the flight to take him back to columbus, georgia. he will be flying a leer 60 jet -- lear 60 jet. officials say he will have the critical medical equipment for his care while in the air. the flight is expected to take about four hours. back out here live, this is the flight back home. those in charge say they will be here tough roughly 15 minutes. he -- here roughly 15 minutes. coming up, we'll talk more about the background, very interesting background, as well as a couple celebrities that have stepped up to take care of him. we're live in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. an oakland woman recovering from a violent road rage attack that left her badly injured. she was riding her bike on 14th last week when she was cut off

by a pickup truck. she said the driver grabbed her through his window and dropped her. she didn't want to go on camera but talked to us about what happened. >> once i, you know, fell, i watched the truck run me over. >> i saw it happening. she was being dangled and i knew what was gonna happen. >> about 20 minutes later, that driver came back to the scene. he's now facing charges of hit and run and assault with a deadly weapon. reyes owns an art business in downtown oakland. her friends are raising money to help her while she's not able to work. sal? >> things are getting busier. we're starting on 280 northbound getting up to highway 17 in the downtown area. it's not stop and go. but it's slowing down the closer you get to highway 17. you will see some slow traffic there. we're also looking at the commute at the bay bridge toll

there may be some profit taking going on with wall street coming off a sustained rally that's taken the s&p 500 to record-closing highs for five straight sessions. the dow, down 17. still above 15,000, though. the nasdaq is down 4. s&p, down 3. well, the good news on the jobs front. the number of first-time claims for unemployment claims fell to a five-year low last week. 323,000 people filed for initial jobless benefits. that's down 4,000 from the week before. analysts had expected the number to go up slightly. among the stocks to watch, tesla is up 18% in early trading so far today. that's after the bay area-based electric carmaker reported its first ever quarterly profits. and they received another boost. consumer reports magazine says

welcome back. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. we begin with new information on a massive manhunt. ktvu has learned one of the bay area's most-wanted fugitives is now in custody. police say dimitri storm was arrested two days ago in oakland. investigators say he was using an alias when officers took him into custody. the 4-year-old man is facing a -- the 42-year-old man is facing a long list of charges, including slamming an suv door on a sheriff deputy's arm, leading police on two chases and pointing a gun at a man near santa cruz. he's also suspected of stealing the least ten cars.

police say one of the crimes was captured on tape. the santa cruz sheriff's department will release more information at a news conference later today. ktvu will have the latest information on the air and online. 7:59. in overnight news, the investigation into last night's stabbing of a south bay man who was celebrating his 21st birthday. ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose to tell us about a three-hour manhunt inside of a popular city park this morning. janine? >> reporter: dave, the stabbing actually happened here at the home behind me on custard drive. i knocked on ther to to talk to the family. they didn't want to -- on the door to talk to the family. they didn't want to find them. at 1:15 this morning, police received a 911 call that a man celebrating his 21st birthday was stabbed multiple times at a home in the cambrian area of san jose. officers interviewed witnesses who say a fight broke out and investigators were told that the suspect may be hiding in

doerr park. police had trouble locating him. i'm familiar with the park. when i arrived, i told the lieutenant there was a gated community pool with a lot of places to hide. that information was given to the officers. >> during the search, the officers were using flare car, infrared, it will pick up heat. they are coming around the corner by the pool and the tennis courts, at which point -- we knew something was up. we were looking in the area. nothing was coming to fruition. after talking to you, we went back to the pool area. that's when we found him over there. >> reporter: the suspect surrendered immediately. police say he's 20-year-old peter brunetto of san jose. he will be booked for assault with a deadly weapon. neighbors we spoke to say police have come to the house in recent months several times for noise and other disturbances. they say they are not happy about this latest incident that escalated and seems to be obviously more violent but they

say they are glad that the suspect has been caught. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:01. new information about the search for a shasta county man suspected of killing his wife and two young daughters. the manhunt for shane franklin miller has forced the schools to close this morning in parts of humboldt county. investigators think miller may be hiding in or near the community of patrolia. yesterday afternoon, his gold dodge 2010 pickup was found there. deputies have been getting 911 calls saying miller has been spotted in that area. on tuesday, deputies were called to miller's home. when they got there, they found the bodies of his wife, his 34- year-old wife, his two daughters, ages 8 and 4, all three had been shot. one of those victims had phoned for help during the shooting. 8:02. the search continues for an armed man who evaded police in hayward. theickscy dent started

yesterday -- the incident started yesterday afternoon when someone spotted a man near the hayward b.a.r.t. station. investigators say when an officer tried to stop the suspect, he turned on that officer and the officer opened fire. the suspect was not hit and he ran away. officers suffer surrounded a yard but -- officers surrounded a yard but could not find the suspect. the chp has an important safety message for drivers who want to honor the five women killed in that limo on the san mateo bridge. they ask that no flowers or other items be left at the scene of the deadly fire. officers are reminding fire there's no safe place to pull over and stopping on the bridge could lead to another tragedy. family members and friends gathered to attend the funerals of these two victims.

weekend, the warmest day will be sunday. 8:08. a psychiatric hospital in nevada as you accused of busing patients out of the that -- accuse of -- accused of busing patients out of state. the sacramento bee investigation claimed that hospital bussed out 1500 patients to other states including california causing those other states to spend money taking care of the patients. now a federal report is indicating if the hospital doesn't correct the problem, if he risk -- they risk losing millions of dollars in federal funding. the latest government stats show where you live reflects how much you pay in hospital bills and the difference can be vast. for example, if you suffered a heart attack in danville, arkansas, your hospital bill about $3,000. the same ailment would cost $92,000 for someone in modesto. there are large differences at

morning. any minute we expect the mayor to arrive here. we're hoping to talk to her about this report, certainly we have heard from her about the department and the police department and what she expects will happen next in the wake of this new uncertainty surrounding the police chief and who will lead this department. but again, the focus is on the bratton report. it was supposed to be released this morning and then came the surprise announcement that the chief was gonna step down for medical reasons. that threw everything in turmoil and delayed the progress on the report until today. the mayor when she spoke yesterday about the chief also spoke about moving ahead. >> i want you to come tomorrow. you are all here today. i want you to come and listen to the bratton report. i want you to hear from chief harnet about how he thinks they've made a lot of progress. they've started to implement things in the last few months. so i think the city is moving forward. >> reporter: so she spoke a little bit about what some of what we're going to hear today.

one in terms of his recovery. we first told you about les rowe. he's a homeless man frequently seen in the north beach area. he was also very well-liked as well. in may of last year, he was hit while crossing columbus and stockton by a late model suv. that driver has not been found. since then he's been recovering going from hospital to hospital and according to caretakers, he can't even talk. he's expected to take this flight home back to columbus, georgia where he will enter another facility. this is the most rewarding job that i personally have had in aviation. we're fighting the good fight. we're doing a good thing we are. we're getting people home and to another facility where they can get better care. >> family and high school friends mainly through social media were able to raise more than $17,000 for this flight to take him to columbus, georgia. in terms of his background, it's very interesting.

this family says they don't know how they became homeless. it's being recorded that he's a college graduate and that he was a former stockbroker. he graduated from the same high school as lionel richie and. this is the flight that will take him back home. it's a learjet. when he arrives there will be a few -- there's only a few feet from the ambulance to the learjet, and they have to disattach equipment to the jet. we expect there is a rather large homecoming in georgia. back to you. >> thank you, brian. 8:37. want to check in with sal see what's happening in oakland. >> all of the traffic -- not all of it, but a good amount of traffic eventually ends up in oakland. it starts off maybe in contra costa county or in solano county. and they are all filtering down
