consul general. she said condolences are pouring in from the bay area and around the world. >> well because andrew was such an amazing sailor, this is already hit the news in the uk and tributes are flowing in for him and what he contributed to the world of sailing. >> reporter: she said the consulate is doing everything it can for his family here in the bay area. today's i said -- incident is not the first time the team has suffered tragedy in the bay. six months ago a boat flipped over and broke apart and was eventually fish out of the water and no one was hurt. in june of 2011, another oracle catamaran capsized because of high wind in the bay. one crew member suffered a

minor injury. and ktvu's meteorologist bill martin is here to explain the conditions at the bay. >> the winds railroad relatively strong. the winds are probably 18, 20 miles per hour something like that. as the story goes though the tide is high and there's a lot of bump out there. race officials tell us the accident that occurred was probably a pitch pull the. the bow of the boat moves in and then it pitches. you can see how easily you can get in trouble here because the winds in the speed with this boat. this boat is going probably 35 miles per hour then it stops almost dead. if you're a sailor you know how deadly this kind of accident can be. with this situation you can see

unedited video. new video tonight of a wrong way driver in vallejo. the man had to be cut out of his car after a crash in the sonoma boulevard ramp. according to the chp the man drove the wrong direction off the off ramp at 7:30 tonight. then he narrowly missed a honda suv. hit a sign and crashed into concrete pillars which support the inner pass. the drive was the only man in the car and was taken to the hospital. the chp is investigating whether alcohol and drugs were a factor. the search is on for an exconvict suspected of killing three. they found the victims tuesday night. today s.w.a.t. teams focused on the town of petrolia after they found miller's truck there yesterday. so far there is no known motive

for the shootings but deputies say they did respond to a domestic dispute at that home last night. there are new questions tonight about the timing and the reason for the sudden departure of oakland's police chief howard jordan. the chief said he's taking medical leave but as eric rasmussen tells us political pressure may have been a contributing factor. howard jordan has said the decision was his to step down for medical reasons. law enforcement and other sources with direct knowledge confirm to ktvu jordan was suddenly called to a meeting at city hall before his announcement that he was seeking medical retirement. sources say it caused him to miss a 9:00 a.m. meeting with his officers it was only after that sources say the chief acceptability an e- mail to opds rank in file. >> was the chief called to a meeting before his announcement. >> this is about the youth conference. i would like to stick to that

set for tomorrow. a teacher was arrested this morning. bobby chambers works at jepsen's middle school. police say he was found to be in possession of a loaded gun, ammunition, cocaine and a small amount of marijuana. engineers are testing bolts at the new bay bridge to make sure the bolts are strong enough. the bolts are cut and machines down to precise test pieces. the lab then tests sample after sample to see what gives and what doesn't. these tests can help determine if the bay bridge can open up as planned on labor day weekend. the last original judge on american idol is call it quits.

stadium. the niners announced that the the stadium will be named levy's stadium. san francisco's recreation and parks department is working on plans now to sell seats or something else from the old stadium. candle stick which is owned by the city has been home to the niners since 1971. candle stick is slated to be demolished once the niners move into their new home. atlantic aviation is once again trying to halt the construction of a private jet. the company filed a lawsuit against the project. the city awarded the project to a competing company and last month atlantic aviation filed an appeal with the city which was rejected. now, atlantic is seeking a restraining order with allegations that the project violates the airport's master plan, safety standards,
