more information is expected today in the wake of the death of a veteran sailor in the america's cup training run. we'll tell you what is happening today that will determine what is next for the event. early morning fire at a popular san francisco restaurant. why firefighters had a tough time putting it out. a music festival expected to draw thousands this weekend in napa has some neighbors fuming. we soak to one man who said he could hear the blaring music ten blocks away. this is all when the morning news continues. good morning. thank you for waking up with us on this friday morning may 10th i'm pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather, traffic, steve, do we need a jacket or sweater this >> i would. it's chilly out there this morning. inland temps will start to warm up. it's one of the days you start out man it's cool but today it's rather warm. unless you are down toward

santa cruz or capitola it will be cool. 50s and 60s upper 70s and low 80s. westbound 24 that traffic looks okay driving between walnut creek and oakland to the caldecott tunnel. there is a crash in san jose reported. this is westbound 80 as you head out to the mccarthur maze. the traffic is moving along relatively well. five cars with injuries. we'll tell you more about that coming up. now let's go back to dave and pam. starting with developing news from san jose a van has crashed into one of the bay area's biggest hospitals. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live from the santa clara valley medical center. what just happened janine? >> reporter: we are hearing at 4:00 a.m. we are told by a nursing supervisor here that a van actually crashed into a window near the main lobby entrance. now there is a lot of construction going on around here. so we're at least a block away from where this happened.

so let's go to video of what we could shoot. at the entrance there was completely shattered glass. the van has already been towed. again the nursing supervisor said that the driver of that van was driving very erratically and somehow crashed into the window. into a planter. we are also told apparently there was a janitor cleaning at that time. he had minor injuries. a deputy a sheriffs deputy happened to be on the scene. he heard the crash, he came and responded. he detained the driver. we are told the driver of that van is now being treated in the emergency room. we are told he is stable. we don't know much more though about his condition. but the nursing supervisor did tell us that it's fortunate that nobody else was injured. i took some still pictures that you are probably looking at right now. showing these are cleanup crews. they are sweeping up all the

broken glass because there is still a lot of traffic of people who are coming in to use the hospital. and again that whole section that was crashed through it was so large that we all thought it was the door. the front entrains. but it's actually a window. again we will update you on the situation and plan to talk more to that supervisor. we know the chp is the lead investigating agency on this. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. meantime a popular restaurant in san francisco will be shut down for awhile because of an over night fire. it happened here at the forbes island restaurant near pier 41. firefighters had a tough time putting the flames out since you could only get to the restaurant by boat. it features under water dining rooms. it's located right where the sea lions gather. the restaurant owner was there

when the fire started. san francisco police will be leading the investigation into the deadly america's cup training accident. high-tech 72-foot catamaran belonging to the artemis racing team of sweden tipped over in the water. winds were about 20 miles an hour. all 11 crew members were thrown into the cold waters. rescuers frantically pulled everyone to safety. one was trapped beneath the boat for ten minutes. efforts to revive him did not work. ktvu claudine wong is on treasure island to tell us how the death of mr. simpson will effect the upcoming america's cup. claudine. >> it is still unclear but we expect to hear more about how this will impact the rays. in the meantime we are here on -- as you can see just past over the rocks you can see the

-- here's what we know about what happened yesterday. it was yesterday afternoon the artemis team had taken that 72- foot catamaran out. it was a training run. when it flipped andrew simpson and the rest of the crew went into the water. authorities believe he may have been trapped but he was an experienced sailor who won olympic gold and silver from britain. >> we haven't been in the top three in event this year. >> reporter: simpson had moved his wife and infant son to the bay area for this race. he was serving as a strategist for the swedish team. what happens now to this event and his team that is still unclear. >> too early to say. the artemis team had two boats. this is the first boat. it wasn't the race boat.

so we need to review. >> reporter: so again there is is a press conference set for this morning. we do expect to hear from organizers of the race as well as maybe possibly the coast guard. i don't know if members of the artemis team will be. again, they are saying the sailing teams are like family. and certainly this family is grieving. the america's cup was supposed to start in july. we don't necessarily expect that change but a lot of talk about the catamarans what they are capable of the dangers of them and what it all means. live here on treasure island claudine wong. >> ktvu's coverage continues throughout the day and on ktvu.com. we mosted more information about the racing career of andrew simpson. you can also see unedited video of the boat recovery operation. now look for the bay area news tab on the front page. also new this morning, vallejo police are investigating another shooting near a little league baseball field. it happened last night on mini

drive and whitney avenue. police found blood and several bullet casings on the street outside the ballpark but so far there is no information on victims or arrests. but the shooting briefly forced the postponement of a little league game. time now 6:06. thousands of people heading to napa this weekend for the fist ever bottle rock festival. the music, comedy, food, and of course wine began wednesday evening. tara moriarty is there. neighbors not so excited about this festival. tara. >> reporter: yeah, not really that much. the loud music and lack of parking, traffic has a lot of neighbors really complaining about this particular festival. the folks that live near here.

concert goers fall. we looked around the music festival. there really aren't too many -- when night there were 10,000 tons here. here. some neighbors have complained about parking and traffic but there are other events here at the expo year round. one person we spoke to he didn't want to appear on camera he said he could hear the music blaring ten blocks away at his house. it's not the fact there is music, there are other concerts here. this particular festival features very loud music. we know 35,000 concert goers are expected at the event each day this weekend. bottle rock kicked off wednesday night and the bill features more than 60 acts including kings of leeon and james addiction. it ends with zach brown band,

train, and jackson brown. hotels are full so people decided to camp out here. live from napa i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:08. we know traffic will be busy out there. sal, something just happened in san jose. >> that is right there is a crash dave, pam. let me put it on the maps for you here. northbound 87 it's a crash that may have been caused by debris in the road and as many as five cars may be involved. from is also a new crash reported in the livermore valley. westbound 580 at north livermore avenue. that is reported as a motorcycle crash and traffic had been okay but now it's beginning to slow down coming west of the it mont -- altamont pass. and this morning's commute looks okay if you are driving on interstate 880. there are no major problems getting up to downtown oakland.

when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza the traffic here is getting a little busier. a loot of low clouds and -- a lot of low clouds and fog in place. west at 18. been coming down. had gusts to 26 a couple hours ago. there is a lot of fog. coastal drizzle or mist is out there. it would not surprise me. had a little bit coming into work today. overall little bit of drizzle as that fog gets squashed. today is that transition. san francisco had been stuck along with many areas on the coast and fog. very, very cool temps. 58 the last two days. i will go 61 today. that is still below average for this time of year. there is very cool readings. i mean about 49-55 all over the place. that 49 is at walnut creek. san francisco is at 50. 50 half-moon bay. napa is 51. same for fairfield and concord. and low 50s on the peninsula.

welcome back. 6:14. new developments in the case of that australian couple that disappeared on a cruise ship. police in australia called off the search for a 30-year-old man and his 26-year-old girlfriend. they were first discovered missing yesterday. it had just come back from a ten-day trip to the south pacific. now surveillance footage shows the couple falling off the ship wednesday night. no one saw them. they fell 65 feet into the water. carnival cruise says it's not their fault. they say the cruiseline has is a railing that was two inches higher than the industry regulations. back in this country the next phase of the jodi arias murder trial has been postponed until this week. arias was convicted of first degree murder for the brutal murder of her one-time boyfriend in 2008. the jury was due to go back to the courtroom yesterday to decide if she should be

sentenced to life in prison or receive the death penalty. arias says she would prefer the death penalty. court officials haven't told us why there is a delay. the jury will resume their deliberations on wednesday. boston police say they wish the fbi had shared information it had about one of the boston bombing suspects. at a congressional hearing the police commissioner said he was never told that the fbi had interviewed tamerlan tsarnaev back in 2011. the police department did receive a report five days before the april 15th marathon warning that home grown extremists could attack the event with quote small scale bombings. but massachusetts authorities says the warning was routine and not specific. president obama is launching a new effort to rally the public around his new health care law. as jacqueline fell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom the president is reaching out to the women at an event at the white house today.

jacqueline. pam, president barack obama will highlight women and children's health in a mother's day themed event later this afternoon. he will really promote the benefit for women under the law including free cancer screenings. he'll ask moms to urge their uninsured children to sign up for coverage this year. the president says most people will be uneffected as the final phases are rolled out. but republicans disagree. house republicans say next week they will vote again repeal the health care cost. >> it's reducing access to galt hock if and it's much more difficult for those that to hire workers. >> reporter: when i see you in the next hour while this plan has some democrats nervous. reporting live in washington jacqueline fell ktvu channel 2

news. new question this is oakland surrounding this week's very abrupt resignation of howard jordan. jordan has said his decision to resign was due to concerns about his health. but ktvu news has learned jordan was suddenly called to a meeting at city hall wednesday morning. sources say immediately after that meeting police jordan put out an e-mail announcing a decision to resign. oakland mayor jean quan has launched aation-wide search for a -- nation-wide search for a new police chief. and she will enlist outside help from a consulting team. it's coming up with a long list of recommendations to reduce oakland's rising number of shootings, robberies, and burglaries. now they include immediately improving and expanding the police department's investigative unit to tackle

the many unsolved crimes in oakland. oakland has to do a belter job of identify -- better job of identifying crime hot spots. and the report calls for dividing oakland into five separate districts to improve the city's overall crime fighting efforts. investigate are looking for this man. he shot 46-year-old ralph gomez inside a home on west burro drive. garza and gomez were reportedly cousins. family members says the two got into an argument before the shooting and garza remains at large. time now 6:19. a vacaville middle school is being placed on leave. is a teacher. bobby chambers teaches special

welcome back. time is 6:25. a san francisco conoco development on the waterfront is raising new concerns about sewage. critics say they are building it too close to a key sewage line. the line that they say carries 20 million gallons of human waste every day. that is leading to warnings about a sewage spill as a result if there is ever a construction problem oren

earthquake. the public is too to vote on this project in six months. looking ahead to summertime. concerts at the america's cup pavilion will only take place this summer. the operators of the america's cup pavilion have made a voluntary agreement with neighbors if if they host 30 concerts this summer they would not apply to host shows at a similar venue for the next ten years. it comes as a lot of the neighbors brought forward concern about noise and traffic. police in florida say one man on the run from the law ended up in the jaws of an alligator. officers say the strange incident began when they pulled over a 20-year-old man for a traffic violation. that driver ran away and hid if a waste water plant. that is where the suspect came face to face with an alligator who bit the young man in the face and arms. police are thanking the gator for helping them do their job. >> he did help our situation if the alligator had not bitten him or attacked him, he

now from santa clara valley medical center. what happened? >> we just spoke to a hospital administrator who says everybody was completely startled when a van went crashing into the main lobby area there. luckily no one was hit by the van but glass and debris went flying everywhere. there is a lot of construction going on. there is a lot of fencing and everything. that is why we are located and parked around the corner. but here is some video that we just took of the main lobby entrance. the van didn't actually go through the doors. this is where a plate glass window juiced to be. the van was towed away already earlier this morning when it happened around 4:00 a.m.. authorities say that the man was driving erratically in the parking lot and near the main lobby right before he plowed into the window. he was take ton the er and is in stable condition. a hospital spokesperson who was here at the time describes what

she saw. >> it was quite frightening. our main concern was for the safety of our staff and incoming patients because there was a great deal of glass everywhere. >> reporter: for the last hour, there have been cleanup crews sweeping and vacuuming up all the shattered glass because they are concerned about the safety of their patients. some of the debris that went flying actually hit a staff member from their housekeeping. that man has minor injuries. he is expected to be okay and he is going to be released soon from the hospital. because of this they have opened up a side entrance near the main entrance so people can get through there safely and avoid any left over debris that is there. the hospital spokesperson says it was a blessing that nobody was hit by the van. reporting live from san san

jose janine de la vega. firefighters had a tough fire that sits on an island. brian flores is live to show us the damage at this popular restaurant. >> reporter: good morning. we are live here along pier 41. this was a popular tourist restaurant and it is isolated. this is the forbes island restaurant between pier 39 and pier 41. firefighters say it started inside in the -- started somewhere in the inside and spread out. fire started roughly around 3:00 this morning. still no cause on how it started but fire investigators were here to survey the damage. we also understand the owner was there at the time. it's unclear if he was injured or not. >> firefighters came here and

put it out with monitors and boarded the island. >> reporter: again firefighters facing challenges this morning. but the forbes island restaurant was originally a houseboat. but because of -- it was towed to fisherman's wharf. some features include an under water dining room. fortunately this morning the building has lots of damage and according to fire investigators may be able to reopen. we will follow up with that and try to reach out to the owner as well and gather his reaction on the early morning fire. brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. we want to get to our continuing coverage of the america's cup training tragedy. race organizers plan a news conference at 11:00 this morning. they plan to discuss the future of the race after a 72-foot

catamaran flipped over e. over end yesterday afternoon on the san francisco bay. winds were clocked at 20 miles an hour at the time. all 11 crew members of the artemis racing team were tossed into the frigid waters. rescuers frantically pulled everyone out. now the artemis racing team says 36-year-old andrew simpson of england was pulled out but he died. he was trapped underneath that boat for ten minutes. ktvu claudine wong is on treasure island this morning with how the death will effect the america's cup this september. claudine. >> reporter: certainly everyone is wondering that right now. they've got press conference scheduled for later this morning. they are going to talk about what happened and really how they think this might effect the race. we are on treasure island this morning because this is a dry dock where they have bought the catamaran that was involved in this fatal accident. you can see the red bottom of it kind of peeking out over the top of the rocks this morning.

sfpd in charge of this investigation trying to piece together exactly what happened. here's some of what we know. it was not considered an unusual day. the team from sweden was simply on a training run. simpson imparticular was a very experienced sailor. authorities believe he didn't surface like the others because he got trapped possibly under the large sail. and that is what caused this complication in rescuing him. we do have not only medical personnel but people trailing these boats. a lot of precautions put in place. you can see over the race the conditions were not unusual but the boats do push limits and they can flip. >> when you do that on a boat of this power and size, the result can be you know a lot more difficult or catastrophic. >> reporter: simpson won olympic gold and silver for

sailing. now in terms of the race, there is a press conference we've been talking about later this morning. they had to put it for this afternoon and moved it up for this morning. we do no race organizers will be there. a lot of talk today about the safe -- live here on treasure island claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. >> now this is the latest accident during the america's cup training process. last october a catamaran belonging to team oracle capsized during a practice run. at that time winds were at 30 miles an hour. the tide dragged pieces of that boat four miles past the golden beat bridgen. in jan of 2011 an it

i want to show you 80 westbound it's not all that bad. it's getting crowded. by bridge toll plaza that is a five minute delay. it's not really that robust this morning. let's go to steve. >> sal, thank you. a couple little breaks in the clouds. there is still a lot of low clouds in place. we're seeing significant fog. but inland temps will begin to rebound. we have very cool lows this morning. a lot of low clouds and fog stacked up on the coast. starting off in a very brisk 50 degrees. there is a west wind in place from coast bay to inland areas. still high pressure is on the way. it will squash this fog. inland temps will bump up 4-8. you can see the ridge sending

fog already burning off for some well inland. it will be sunny but temperatures 50s and 60s coast and bay. uner 70s and low 80s. welcome back. good morning, to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories. developing news right here from san jose. look at this. hours ago a van crashed into the lobby of the santa clara valley medical center. right now there is no word of any serious injuries. it's still not clear what led up to that crash. iconic san francisco restaurant will be shut down for awhile because of an over night fire just happened hours ago at the forbes island restaurant. it's near pier 41. happened about 3:00 this morning. you can only get to the restaurant by boat. made it hard for the firefighters. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. and san francisco police are investigating why an america's cup catamaran tipped over yesterday on san francisco bay killing one of the sailors. another one was hurt.

the organizers of the america's cup will be holding a news conference this morning. they will be talking about how that tragedy will effect the race. a woman has been found alive in the rubble of the garment factory building collapse. 17 days after that horrible collapse. this is video of soldiers carefully pulling her out of the wreckage. the rescuers were just getting ready to clear debris when they heard her calling for help. she was trapped in a prayer room where she had enough space to stand. she also found some food and water that lasted until just about two days ago. the discovery comes just as the death toll from surpassed 100. exconvict accused of shooting his wife and two daughters. deputies are going door to door searching for shane miller. they leave he may still be --

they believe he may still be hiding in the area. now people who live in the town of petrol yeah were ordered to shelter many place yesterday after miller's truck was found. miller is an exconvict who served time on a weapon's charge. a memorial has been placed at the shasta county home where sandy miller and her two daughters were killed. no known motive for that shooting but deputies confirm that they responded to a domestic dispute at the home last month. time now 6:47. he was one of the bay area's most wanted men for several weeks but this morning former fugitive dimitri storm is in jail waiting for his first court appearance later today. he will face charges of dozens of crimes among several local counties. police in berkeley arrested him earlier this week after getting a report of a suspicious man

grabbing door handles. some people in napa say that four-day music festival is creating too much noise and traffic. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty just spoke to a concert goer who says those people only have themselves to blame. tara. >> reporter: we're here at the skyline park and this is where a lot of people because the hotels were booked they decided to come here and pitch a tent. it's a really big field here. it's owned by the state but being operated by a local camp owner. as many as 1800 people are expected here this weekend. these fans are very excited but people who live near the fairgrounds are less than thrilled. they say it is simply too loud. on the front side the fairgrounds there weren't too many houses. but on silver are doe trail there is quite a few homes. wednesday night there were about 10,000 fans there.
