underway. san francisco police investigators examined the artemis team boat on treasure island today. cup organizers spoke about death of sailor andrew "bart" simpson. >> andrew was a good friend. it's hard to believe he's gone. >> reporter: police say an america's cup investigation into the death of the two-time olympic medalist center on who caused this high-tech sailboat to tip over and break apart in the bay yesterday afternoon. simpson had been positioned on the trampoline area. he was trapped underwater, unseen for at least 10 minutes. it's unclear if weather he had been tethered to the boat or unable to access an oxygen canister. it is one of the windier areas of the bay, though organizers say water conditions at the time were flat. >> the area they were in is the area that we took the youth teams to go and train in february because we deemed it to be a safe area. >> reporter: the investigation will also look at the design of

sailing. those who knew him say the highlights of simpson's life were at home with his family. >> patti tells us simpson's wife and children returned to england yesterday. an afternoon grass fire is under control at this hour. the fire was reported at about 2:00 in hunter park west of interstate 280 in woodside. news chopper 2 was overhead as a he continuer dropped fire retardant on the flames. firefighters used two park trails to reach the flames. the cause is still under investigation. the california public utilities commission is calling for tighter safety regulations on limos after last weekend's deadly fire. the cpuc wants annual inspections and rules governing how stretch limos are built. the state doesn't perform safety inspections for smaller

limos. also, we've just learned that jerry hill has introduced legislation that would require fire extinguishes in limos as well as other safety provisions. an unusual san francisco restaurant is closed after an early morning fire. the fire broke out about 3:00 a.m. at the forbes island restaurant between piers 39 and 41. firefighters had a tough time putting it out because you can only get to the restaurant by boat. so they were forced to use a fire boat to battle the fire. the restaurant's owner was the only person there when the fire start. he was not hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. investigators are looking into what sparked a fire at an oakland barbecue restaurant. flames broke out about 10:00 a.m. the fire was on the second floor in the attic of the building. a suspected serial car thief continues to keep authorities guessing even though they have him in custody. the man authorities belief to be demi tremendous storm

appeared in an alameda courtroom today. the da's office says it's not exactly sure -- the suspect had been at the top of the santa cruz county sheriff east of most wanted list for weeks. he is expected to enter a plea next monday. an intense man hunt is underway for an ex-convict accused of killing his wife and two young daughters. deputies and u.s. marshals are searching for shane miller. they say he is dangerous and also may be familiar with what they call warfare. the deputies believe he is hiding in an area near a cabin where several weapons were kept. they say he's been on the run since tuesday after his wife and their 4 and 8-year-old daughters were shot and killed at their home in shingletown. dna confirms an accused

rain e and kidnappist fathered a child. 52-year-old ariel castro is the father much a little girl found in his home. the 6-year-old and three women were rescued earlier this week. the fbi finished its search of castro's home. castro is charged with rape and kidnapping and is being held on $8 million bail. tonight there is word on what happened to the body of the boston marathon bombing suspect who was killed by police. the uncle of tamerlan tsarnaev says his nephew has been buried in virginia. the body was buried with the help of a faith coalition. that ended the search for a community and cemetery willing to take the remains. patient care workers have voted to authorize a strike. pickets are planned for may 21st and 22nd at the uc medical center in san francisco and four others around the state. this after nearly a year of stalled contract talks. members of the afscme union

sharing our facebook badge. a vote could impact whether san francisco giants fans are able to buy hot dogs and garlic fries at the game. concession workers work for subcontractor. the international long shore and warehouse union workers say their wages have been frozen for three years. that's despite the financial success of the giants and center plate. the vote is to authorize a strike during the current baseball season. on mother's day this sunday some major league ballplayers will be using pink bats to support breast cancer research. louisville slugger is giving 200 pink bats to players. after the bats are used they'll be auctioned off on mlb.com with all of the money going to breast cancer charities. the company is hosting a national hunt for pink bats. 30 pink bats will be hidden across the country with clues posted on slugger.com.

if you find one of those bats, a $50 donation will be made in your name to breast cancer research. some 50,000 visitors are expected to come to san francisco over the next 6 weeks. san francisco travel, the city's official convention bureau announced there are nine major conventions on the center calendar through june. the three medical groups will bring well over half of the people and money. tech companies apple and google will have major developers conferences. one of the smallest groups, about 1100 people will attend the international association of gay square dance club. that's in late june. stocks rose for a third week in a row. the dow rose to a record high. the s&p rose by 7. nasdaq gained 27. the u.s. postal service is still losing money. they lost $1.9 billion in the first three months of this year. that's a slight improvement over how much it lost in the

in the moment. chase quickpay. so you can. a man on his way to san jose last year who stripped naked to protest the security check at portland's airport is going to court to fight a $1000 fine. john brennan says he expects to lose the first round of his legal fight when he goes to court next tuesday. still, he plans to press his free speech argument in an appeal and push for what he calls effective security checks that aren't as invasive. his appeal will be made in the federal court system. in san jose, a driver was injured today when he slammed right into a building. ironically, that building happened to be a hospital. he didn't have to go too far to get treatment. >> reporter: this picture was

snapped soon after this came barreling early this morning. the van hit the wall to the admitting area. debris went flying everywhere. >> it was quite frightening, actually to see a mini van sitting in the lobby. our main concern was the safety for the staff and any incoming patients. >> reporter: the van didn't hit anyone, but glass and debris hit a janitor. he had minor cuts. the driver was taken to the emergency room. his van was towed as officers investigated the incident. they interviewed the driver. >> during the interview process something just didn't look correct. so they performed it field sobriety tests and they were able to determine he was under the influence of a controlled substance. >> reporter: the chp arrested mark deluca of campbell. they say he was driving under the influence and with a suspended license. these barriers were put to protect pedestrians. this is where the mini van came

crashing through the window. these barriers about 15 feet apart from each other. now the hospital is reevaluating. >> we are making sure this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: workers made temporary repairs. hospital officials say it's a blessing this happened at 4:00 a.m. when there wasn't as much foot traffic. they fear more people would have gotten hurt. investigators are looking into the death of a woman who was struck and killed by a cal train today. happened about 7:45 in the morning right near the broadway station. cal train says an express train traveling 73 miles an hour hit a woman who was stank on the tracks. tracks were closed for almost an hour. passengers were bussed to a stop down the line. no word on why the woman was on the tracks. this is the seventh death this year on cal trans tracks. a central valley man is facing charges after his son

for this group of firefighters be crisp, be calm. >> every person who has a near drowning episode, they all have one thing in common. they're one wave away from drowning. >> reporter: san francisco fire trained and ready to roll. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a man who says he was carjacked by christopher dorner lost his bid to get part of the reward. a judge denied the injunction. he had claimed he deserves part of the reward because he called 911 after he was reportedly carjacked by dorner, in big bear. police say the call didn't provide them with any information leading to dorner's capture. dorner shot himself in a final confrontation with law enforcement in february. authorities are splitting the reward between four other people. president obama delivered a mother's day message saying his signature health reform law is good for moms.

city. signature plans to build an $82 million facility, but atlanta aviation which currently provides business flight services says signature has not complied with state environmental quality laws. city leaders say the suit has no merit. we have a better idea on when the fourth bore will be ready for traffic. work is moving ahead pretty much without a hitch. tom vacar is on highway 24 overpass tonight with a look at the progress and how much longer until that fourth bore opens. >> reporter: people have been waiting for 20 years. we know enough now that enough work is done that experts tell us an early october opening is highly likely. today paved and lit the tunnel's fourth bore is a place where crafts men are installing the final sub systems.

san jose included bag pipes and honor guard and a 21 gun salute. representatives from all of the counties law enforcement agencies were there. 39 officers in the county have been killed in the line of duty dating back to 1862. >> the fight is a tribute not just to those who lost their lives but really to all in law enforcement who risk their lives every day to keep the rest of us safe. >> the last santa clara county officer killed in the line of duty was jeffrey fontana. he was killed in october of 2001. britain's prince harry is showing us a side of him. he stopped by walter reed in maryland to visit wounded service members. earlier prince harry visited arlington national cemetery. he placed a wreath to honor the fallen.

oakland's latest crime fighting tool isn't exactly what you'd expect. we'll show you how this little baby girl is helping to break through the harsh shell many of the city's youngest children are already building up. >> reporter: the sounds of her walk to school are familiar and friendly. it's not always the case. her school is new highland academy in east oakland. teachers say lockdowns and police activity are fairly common. just last month and only a few miles away a group of boys, some as young as 14, gunned down a paramedic. when it comes to steering children away from violent crime, this is the last thing you'd expect to hear. >> hello baby adeline how are you? >> reporter: 10-month-old baby

needed. a space walk is planned for tomorrow so astronauts can try to fix an ammonia leak. the leak is in the one of the radiator lines. it forced a shut down of one of eight solar panels. nasa says the crew is not in danger. in a little more than an hour from now, one of the most unusual annual competitions will be held in piedmont. these are contestants from last year's bird calling contest at piedmont high. b tonight's event is the 48th annual contest. the students put on colorful costumes and whistle while trying to imitate our chosen bird. the top three winners will fly to new york city where they'll get to appear on the late night with david letterman show on may 21st. folks down under looked up to see an incredible sight. this is the ring of fire

airport security lines, an internal investigation finds the transportation security administration has moth balled tens of millions of dollars of security screening equipment. it's silting in some texas warehouse. some equipment is now obsolete. >> what was there is equipment that had been sitting there for over a year, some of it very important to the security and safety of the people of the united states. >> reporter: we checked the law logs of what's collecting dust. liquid scanners, items used to screen passengers. it needs a large reserve of equipment in case of a crisis or equipment shortages. in truth, many government agencies are notorious for keeping large amounts of items stored in the basement. even congressmen do it. this is capitol hill. so we dug deeper and found tsa is being forced to potentially squander resources aboveground

safety plans for the america's cup race are under review tonight in the wake of a sailor's death during a practice run on the bay. >> we are learning more tonight about the dangerous turn the artemis crew was attempting that cost a crew member his life. good evening, i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. we know what happened but bestill don't know why. the 72-foot team artemis catamaran flipped over then nose dived and broke apart during a practice run on the bay. today ktvu was the only one there as parts of the boat were lifted out of the water and moved into a hangar on treasure island. police investigators examined what's left of that catamaran. it's one of two racing boats that team artemis has.
