there is shock and anger. this house on a rural calaveras county road has been the focus of the town of valley spring. it's where leila fowler was stabbed to death. her 12-year-old brother said an intruder did it but after a two week stand off, last night they announced the brother was under arrest for the crime. >> i was shocked, completely shocked. i could not believe it. >> reporter: this community has shown an outpouring of support. but since last night, many have asked for their donations back and the fundraiser was cancelled. >> the anger and the hostility came out. >> reporter: a clear indication that the tone and circumstances of this story has changed can be seen here at the family's home. there's no activity to be seen here today. and a car that blocked the driveway is now gone -- and a police car that locked the -- that blocked the driveway is

now gone. >> this huge tragedy of two children in one family. >> there's a narrative now that says this is what has happened and now we can begin to do the healing and the work of what it means to deal with that. >> reporter: there is much healing to do in this town. >> you got the people that feel sorry for the young man. they don't understand why a 12- year-old would do what he did. they have the others who want to hang this poor kid in the middle of the square. >> reporter: it is feelings that are raw. ken pritchett. the calaveras school district released this statement. our hearts and thoughts are with those who were impacted by this tragic turn of events. the district also offered to provide support to the fowler family, students and staff. and it says they'll have counselors on hand at all

schools tomorrow. legal analysts and former prosecutor jim handler says under california law the 12- year-old boy must be tried as a juvenile. >> besides the fact that juvenile court proceedings are held confidentable and secret from the public, the big difference in juvenile court proceedings is the po -- focus is on the minor. how do you turn this kid around before he turns 18 years old. >> reporter: according to state law those under the age 14 cannot be tried as adults. investigators say leila's brother initially told authorities that an intruder had broken into the home and killed her sister and there was a massive man hunt for that man despite the boy's arrest. the sheriff's office says it's still an active investigation. we continue to monitor this case with additional coverage on our website ktvu.com. it's right there on our home page. volunteers in lake county are searching for a missing 9-

year-old autistic girl who is unable to speak. mckayla lynch was reported missing from her clear lake home around 1:30 in the afternoon. she was last seen in her front yard. police are using a sonar equipped boat to sweep -- lake. family and friends are mourning the death of a college student after the car he was a passenger in crashed near miami. police in florida are still investigating the crash. golatti had just graduated on friday with a degree in business administration. the 25-year-old was about to join golatti construction. the university of miami president released a statement today she said quote the entire university community is heartbroken to hear of the tragic traffic accident which

resulted in of a um student who just celebrated his graduation on friday. reports of gunfire led police in the east bay today to an area known for its breathtaking views. an that's where a man was found shot to death. the gunfire rang out early this morning on grizzly peaks. that's in the berkeley hills. it's located near hildon regional park just behind the cal campus. jade hernandez is there live with what she learned from uc police. >> reporter: uc berkeley police are still not releasing the victim's name or age tonight. it became the scene of a crime early this morning. >> reporter: drivers encountered uc berkeley police turning traffic around. between centennial and south park drive for hours today.

even years. it's unclear if the victim was a man or a woman.  the alameda county coroner is planning on performing an autopsy. an investigation is under way in santa rosa after several people were stabbed at a large party last night. it happened around 11:30 on the 1200 block of marboro avenue. at least three people were stabbed but only one of those people were severely injured. another stabbing victim were documented gang members. the mayor of new orleans is asking people to come guard after a gunman opened fire at a mother's day parade. it all happened around 2:00 this afternoon near the seventh ward neighborhood not far from the french quarter. according to police, two people had surgery following the shooting but the other victims were grazed by bullets and sustained only minor injuries. >> everybody started running and running and running we were wondering what was going on and

they're shooting. >> two men collapsed in front of our steps. me and my daughter did the best job we could to revive them. >> reporter: police are looking for three people seen running from the shooting scene. meantime the nbi -- fbi is calling the shooting street violence and not a terrorist attack. the legislative analyst office say it is state collected $6.6 billion more than jerry brown predicted in january. many democrats would like to see some social programs restored but they are also pushing for a more cautious approach to state finances. schools will get much of that money. brown is expected to release his revised budget on tuesday. senior officials at the internal revenue service were aware that agents were targets tea party groups back in 2011. this is according to a new report. the treasury department inspector general found that certain groups with names containing tea party and

police in trenon new jersey shot and killed a man this morning who they say had been holding his girlfriend's children captive. police found the bodies of murphy's girl and 13-year-old woman inside the home.

suspect in remote parts of humble county. they say this man sean miller is on the run in an area known as the lost coast. they say he is heavily armed and dangerous. he is accused of killing his girlfriend and daughter. residents are being told to keep their doors locked and leave notes with their name and whereabouts if they leave their homes. police say scammers posing as utility workers are targeting san francisco. authorities say the suspects falsely tell victims they work for pg & e or the san francisco water department and demand payments for overdue bills. the scammers call the victims and tell them that if they don't pay their service will be cancelled. victims are told the only form of payment is by a service called money pac. neither pg & e or the city's water department requests payments that way. hundreds of steel rods used

the power ball was 16. today was the final day of napa's new bottle rock music festival which wrapped up just about a half hour ago. police tell us that between 30 and 35,000 people attended the festival each day and for the most part it was a good crowd. they said officers officers made 20 arrests. police also fielded about 130 calls from neighbors for complaints about traffic, parking and noise. the engine tour of california kicked off this morning in southern california. the 750-mile eight day race began today in escondido and will make their way north to the bay area. 128 cyclists are competing, some of who raced in the tour de france. friday riders will hit the bay area for stage six in san jose. this is the first year that the route takes cyclists up to the top of mount diablo.
