was t-boned. a 42-year-old man from reno is dead after a high speed chase on interstate 80 in the high sierra. the chp says officers were chasing a bmw and the car went airborne at a construction site and then crashed. the car landed on its roof killing the driver. two workers on the side of the road was hurt. one of them was hospitalized. the chase started in the eastbound lanes where an officer tried to pull the car over for reckless driving. but the driver made a u turn and took off in the opposite direction. fire crews have gotten the upper hand now on a 50-acre wildfire that broke out around 3:30 this afternoon in the custeac area. authorities say it was sparked by a tractor trailer that caught fire on the side of interstate 5. the flames were then fueled by the hot weather and dry vegetation. interstate five is open. however one of the four

northbound lanes will remain closed until tomorrow. now to calaveras county where the father of leila fowler standing by his 12-year- old son after the boy was arrested for killing his own sister. the boy was arrested saturday two weeks after 8-year-old leila was stabbed to death in the family home in valley springs. the father barney fowler told the associated press he will believe his son is innocent until he sees evidence proving other wise. meanwhile students at toion middle school returned to class today with mixed emotions. >> she seemed nice and fun -- he seemed nice and funny when i hugged him on friday. >> he always had issues. he was always one of the kids that would be in trouble. >> reporter: the school superintendent says that the schools have counselors to

take pictures of graffiti, garbage and other blithe and postit. their mentor sarah a web director at linked in helped them get involved into a competition. >> it's something i wish i would have been exposed to. i wanted to give that gift to these girls. >> reporter: competing against more than 100 teams they not just wrote the code but did real market research to move the app would be useful. new dreams for these girls who never thought of a computer programming career. >> as we expand our knowledge, we might be making the next instagram or facebook or something. >> reporter: the mentor at linked in sees the girl's prototype came in at the top 30%. and they hope to keep developing so one day it'll be at an app store.

a graffiti clean up project is set to begin right now. crews will be working throughout the night until 5:00 a.m. cleaning graffiti off the train trestle. it could take several days to finish and lane closures are expected. the city is also planning other bragraffiti clean up over the next -- other graffiti clean up over the next few months. robert lincoln was arrested today after police say a woman told him he and her teenage daughter were involveed in a romantic relationship. the girl was a former student of lincoln's. police say the relationship started last year after lincoln was laid off because of budget cuts. he is due in court next week. alleged serial car thief demetrick storm was arranged on theft, resisting arrest and other charges. the 43-year-old fugitive was wanted for a crime spree.

he was arrested last week in berkeley after witnesses reported he was trying to break into cars. a man from berkeley will be sentenced to life in prison without parol next month after being convicted today for killing a teenager in danville in 2009. 17-year-old rilen fukes was killed right in the doorsteps of his home. fukes was selling a small amount of marijuana to walter bell but instead bell robbed kill him. the jury only deliberated for about 40 minutes today before arriving at that guilty verdict. there is a lot to celebrate in minnesota tonight among same- sex marriage advocates. that's the roar of the crowd after the minnesota senate approved the same-sex marriage bill just hours ago. the bill passed the house last week and now goes to minnesota governor mark dayton who has promised to sign it. the bill allows same-sex wedding starts on august 1st. it makes minnesota the 12th

authorities in sacramento are searching for a man who they say tried to kidnap a child in broad daylight. the sheriff's department released this sketch of the suspect they say he pulled up right next to a 7-year-old girl who was walking with her mother on saturday afternoon. he then allegedly grabbed the girl, put her in the trunk of his car and drove off. a neighbor hard the mother's screams and called 911. fortunately the girl was able to escape from the moving car just a couple of blocks away because a witness says the trunk wasn't completely locked. >> she ran right to my husband and he said, he stole me, he stole me. she said she was hit in the trunk. when he put her in, she grabbed her and threw her in the trunk and he didn't close it all the way because her leg was there. >> the girl was taken to the

hospital and treated for minor scratches. there's much speculation on how brown will carve up a million dollars in a state revenue. a formula could tag most of that money for education spending and many democrats are preaching restraint on spending. but other democrats would like to use some of that money for programs devastated by years of budget cuts. >> certainly mental health is a big issue for the president of the senate. i think you will see other legislators and constitutional officers trying to make their priorities known as well. >> the governor will release his budget at a state capital press budget tomorrow morning. then it must be approved by the state legislature before it could take effect on july 1st. schools are counting on additional state funds and are putting classes back in their programs. >> we do have a lot more offerings than we did a year before. it's been a long time since community colleges received good news about the budget and

senior managing engineer specializing in bridge collapses. sorof says a quick look cannot determine a bridge's safety but is evidence that this bridge has been worked on over the years. the concrete exposes the ribs that holds the bridge together. >> it's now exclosed and clearly corroded. >> a lot of our infrastructure was built in the 40s and 50s so it's life psych s-l -- cycle is coming to an end. >> reporter: there are 44,000 california bridges built to last 50 years. the average age is 44 but some are much older. transportation for america says every red bridge on this bay area map is structurally deficient. >> it doesn't mean it's in imminent danger of collapses. it just means it's going to need some work of some kind. >> we visited a number of those including this one on san francisco's third street. ranked deficient for a problem

with its substructure. cost to fix it $23 million. there's also this bridge on oakland's embarcadero street. it needs $50.6 million for a retrofit. with a funding shortfall with bridge repairs or replacements. caltrans gives us a sense of how it prioritizes the problems. it appears it's the major projects that gets priority and the dollars. the $800 million demolition and replacement of san francisco's earthquake vulnerable doyle drive began last year. the 79-year-old via duct was considered dangerously at risk. at its peak thousands of cars used it each day to get to and from the golden gate bridge. >> traffic levels are definitely something we take into account. how many people use this on a daily basis. and how necessary is it for it to remain open. but also the age of the structure is important too. >> reporter: important because

the environment from corrosive salty walter to shifty roads take its toll on bridges such as this one. >> you see cracking up at the top. then the whole thing seems to have come out a little bit. and also crack, the separation to clear the bridge and the wall on the side. >> reporter: and the damage and danger isn't always below the bridge or on the roadway. sometimes it's high over head. this bridge is getting a b.a.r.t. airport extension grafted on to it. but the bridge is 45 45 years old. and you can see where chunks of concrete appear to have fallen to the roadway leaving exposed corroded rebar. caltrans says with the economy recovering more funds may be coming down the pike from the federal government to put new thread on these old bridges. in in palo alto, david stevenson. >> if you have an idea for a

new developments now in a mother's day parade shooting that injured 19 people in new orleans. police there say several people have positively identified the suspect as 19-year-old akeen scott. the teen was wearing a white shirt in these surveillance photos. investigators served warrants at three addresses today but did not find him. three of the 19 shooting victims are in critical condition tonight. two children are among the wounded. a show down is coming between a medical marijuana dispensary in san francisco and the federal government. the u.s. attorney's office has ordered healing center to close by june 1st or the building will be seized. simbala has a permit from san francisco to operate there. the attorney for the building's owner says simbala can't be kicked out because the disopinions reu -- dispensary complies with local and state law. if the government cannot stop the violence in benghazi they say they will.

here's the story as the weather system goes. this low pressure center right here as it bumps up against the coast is going to increase the fog. it's already done that. it's already gotten rid of the fog but it should support the fog formation as we go into the morning hours. we will look for fog tomorrow morning. slightly cooler weather as we slide into tomorrow. here's how it breaks down. the shallow marine layer is going to stretch out. things are really going to start to cool down. as that happens temperatures in the inland valleys instead of the in the 90s will be in the mid-80s. but still warmer and cooler tomorrow. look for fog and low clouds tomorrow when you wake up. they're not there now but i think they could form pretty quickly. the computer model says there's fog in many places when you get going. prepare for a little bit of it. 90s are reds. oranges are 80s, so you can see some of the heat is basically and most of it is the real heat
