ways bottled at the mountain source. two major apartment fires in the bay area today were among several incidents keeping firefighters busy. good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. this has been a busy morning for bay area firefighters. in san jose, there battled a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex near san thomas expressway. this is how it looked from newschopper2 just after 9:00 this morning. about ten minutes after the first call came in.

everyone got out safely. firefighters put out the flames in about 15 minutes. and this is a picture that the san jose fire department sent to us of the building as flames were coming from the windows. two people were displaced by the damage. investigators are looking for the cause. meanwhile, in redwood city, the investigation is underway into a fire where 20 people are now without a home. the fire on oakside avenue near fair oaks elementary school started in a carport and spread to several apartments. ktvu's brian flores was the first reporter to show us the damage. he joins us live. >> reporter: good afternoon. redwood city firefighters were here all morning. investigators will be here throughout the afternoon as they try to piece together exactly what happened that caused this fire to spread so quickly. from chopper 2, you can see the huge flames billowing out of an apartment complex at about 5:15 this morning. from the ground, you can see this closeup video of

firefighters aggressively battling this fire on multiple fronts, including ladder trucks. >> the early-morning hours always has a daily reporting a fire. there was so much fire when the engine got here, it got into the attic which makes it difficult for us to fight the fire. we quickly had to go into defensive mode and pull the crews out of the building. >> reporter: firefighters don't know what caused it, but several investigators are here, including structural experts. a red cross worker says at least 20 people from the burned- out complex and an additional 20 people from were evacuated. investigators say the fire started in the rear. this man lives in a house nearby.

parkview elementary school. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us from the scene to tell us the latest on the information and what's being done differently near that school. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon. everybody in this neighborhood is talking about this accident. you can see this growing memorial where people have left teddy bears and flowers and candles. they are coming every hour to do that. that's just a constant reminder that a little girl was killed here. the walk to school this morning was difficult here at parkview elementary school. there are not normally crossing guards here. but parent volunteers who normally work yard duty donned vets and did that. >> it -- vests and did that. >> it should never have happened. >> reporter: 5-year-old ailleengy was hit and killed --

5-year-old ailleen quiroz was hit and killed. relatives were too distraught to speak on fire. but they described her as a happy teenager, loved aying soccer. >> today is a difficult day for the family. >> reporter: police say the 20- year-old male driver did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs but they are looking to see if he was speeding. >> our investigations unit will william did they were. the on-statement will reveal a lot. >> reporter: neighbors say drivers speed down bluefield frequently and ignore the crosswalk. they've asked. school and city for speed bumps and better signage but nothings that happen -- but nothing's happened. >> we would like to speak to the principal as soon as possible. i will be asking for more traffic enforcement in this specific neighborhood. >> reporter: city officials say

a traffic study was completed earlier this month and found this area was not considered high priority enough to put crossing guards here. but the district's superintendent told me me they are re-evaluating safety procedures to see if any changes need to be made. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. in calaveras county, an arraignment hearing is underway for a 12-year-old charged with killing his sister. 8-year-old leila fowler was stabbed repeatedly on april 22nd while home alone with her brother. the boy blamed the killing on an intruder. last weekend, the police announced the.was under arrest and filed charges against him yesterday -- the boy was under arrest and filed charges against him yesterday of second- degree murder. this is the family walking into court. the boy's parents do not believe he's guilty. authorities have not said what's led them to identify the boy as a suspect.

another large-scale search is underway in clearlake for a 9-year-old autistic girl from san francisco. police say more than a hundred volunteers are looking for mikaela lynch near the family's clearlake vacation home. touch teams have been looking for her since sunday. she lashes to laugh but does not speak or respond to her -- she loves to laugh but does not speak or respond to her name. surveillance video shows the little girl running away from the lake, so the search has turned to the neighborhood. the police say it's difficult terrain. >> the houses that are on the lake, there's -- they are built out over the lake and you have to get up under the houses and so on. there's crawlspaces under there. >> her parents say she was playing outside with her brother when she took off her clothes. her medication sometimes makes her hot and she want ran away. san francisco police say

they've evicted two dozen squatters from the ingleside district. we have more details on a story that was breaking on "mornings on 2." david stevenson explains why there was such a heavy police presence there. >> reporter: police tell me they brought in a tactical squad for this morning's raid because they had concerns there could be violence. as you can see, police are still here as crews board up this former church building. cell phone video obtained by ktvu shows san francisco police rousting more than two dozen people from this rundown ingelside district building. >> there were 28 people inside. we asked them to voluntarily leave. if they didn't, they would be relatived. >> reporter: police say the -- arrested. >> reporter: police say that squatters have occupied this building for a few months. >> it's a safe place to come in

when it's raining and to get shelter. >> reporter: they created a garden an community space -- and community space. police say it was a health hazard. >> i don't know what to do other than calling the police. >> reporter: the owner brought in crews late this morning to board up the building in an effort to keep it empty. >> they brought a lot of trash inside and basically vandalized almost everything. >> reporter: police say four people were arrested for outstanding warrants. we're told the building's owner will have security in place this afternoon and into the evening to keep if from being reoccupied. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. vallejo police are still investigating a violent incident this morning at a hospital. officials at kaiser's vallejo medical center say a patient threatened a nurse before 8:00

caltrain is back on schedule after an investigation into an accident that killed a pedestrian this morning in san bruno. there's no word from the coroner yet on the identity of the victim but caltrain officials say the person was not in a crossing. it happened about 5:20 a.m. between south linden avenue and scott street. the tracks were shut down for about an hour, but b.a.r.t. and sam transare offering ticket -- samtrans are offering

was burglarized. they took $13,000 and he said the police didn't show up until eight hours later. >> i realize they are under staff. but out of a nuisance crime grows into harder crime eventually. >> it means a lot. we're always fighting or hoping for somebody to happen. >> reporter: interim chief shawn wwhent -- whent said many complained about how long it took police to take the calls. but he did get some good feedback. >> pretty positive overall, there's complaints about afternoon prostitution. they would like to see foot patrols or bike patrols around here. >> reporter: that's something whent says will happen when the next academy class graduates this summer. whent graduated from the academy in 1996 and spent most of his early years as a beat.

a memorial wall. o.j. simpson took the witness stand in las vegas this morning in an effort to win a new trial. simpson is serving nine to 33 years for armed robbery and kidnapping. he said he did not receive add quit legal counsel because his lawyer at the time had a conflict of interest. simpson was convicted of retrieving memorabilia from his football career at gunpoint. >> what kind of advice was mr. galanter giving you? >> well, that -- the overall advice that he gave me was, you have a right to get your stuff. >> the judge has agreed to consider 19 different instances in which simp southern's current lawyers say his former attorney gave him inadd quit legal representation -- inadequate legal representation. the postal service released the cities where most dog bites occur. los angeles took the very top

stop. san francisco came in fourth on the list with 38 attacks in 2012. the postal service released the report as a prelude to national dog bite prevention next week and is asking pet owners to avoid the risk, making sure potentially aggressive dogs are secure. investigators believe a small fire at the lockheed campus in sunnyvale was due to an electrical problem. the fire set off an alarm and sprinklers at the defense contractors's building on lockheed martin -- contractors' building on lockheed martin way. the firefighters needed a map to pinpoint the building because the building is so large. >> it took a while because the building is a large-sized building. when we got to it, we were able to extinguish it rapidly. >> they say the fire broke out in a cubicle and that a handful of employees will need to relocate for a few days because of smoke and water damage.

the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. san francisco has reportedly lost a 7.8 million grant to buy a new fire boat. "the chronicle" reports a grant was lined up in 2009 to build the city's first new fire boat in 50 years. the feds signed off the money in january of 2011 and gave the city two and a half years to design and build the boat. but the city ran into a number of problems with design firms and will not meet the deadline at the end of next month. fire officials say they plan to apply for another grant. well, the bay area cooldown is here. the weather pattern changing. by this time tomorrow, we could be measuring a few rain showers. today, just a few high clouds paint us a visit. temperatures are down 4 to 8 degrees from yesterday's highs. you can see on live stormtracker2, the system we're watching. this happens to be the loop over the past three hours.

you will notice the green over the bay area, not really reaching the ground yet. just a few spotty showers. the main cloud ban is up to the north and that will be approaching the region first thing tomorrow morning. current temperatures are in the 50s to the 60s and the 70s. antioch right now, 72. san francisco, 58 and the wind speeds have been picking up. as you can see, those winds out of half moon bay. out of the northwest at 15 miles an hour. sfo sustained out of the arrest at 22 miles an hour. i'm showing the stronger winds here. hard to ignore this one out of fairfield out of the southwest, 21 miles an hour and that's the cooling direction. for today, we'll have this -- a few scattered high clouds moving into the region throughout the afternoon hours. tomorrow, definitely more cloud cover and the chance of a few light showers. the weekend will be dry. we're gonna change things up by the weekend, especially by sunday. here's the weather system we're watching. it will be cooler. wind speeds around 15 to 25 miles an hour. eventual track of this guy

basically falls apart over the bay area. but tomorrow, still a temperature drop, more cloud cover and our forecast model picking up on at least a few showers moving in from the north. here we are at 6:00 this evening. partly cloudy skies and then we'll take this into your thursday morning by 7:00, 8:00. look what happens. you can see a few light showers or at least some sprinkles. favor, the northern half of the bay area and then basically falling apart. but a lot of cloud cover. we still have to hold onto that chance for a shower for your thursday afternoon. by friday, the clouds clear out. we begin our warming trend by the weekend. forecast highs this afternoon, ranging from the low 60s all the way to the 70s. warmest locations approaching the lower 80s out towards antioch and brentwood. san jose, 74 and san mateo, 69 degrees. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast -- there's that one rain cloud. we're talking about this for mid-may. a little bit unusual. there's the chance for a shower. tori, no rain clouds to worry about. in fact, we're gonna warm
