wandered away on sunday afternoon. she and her family from san francisco had been spending mother's day at their lakeside vacation home. police say mikaela was left alone for just a couple minutes when she disappeared, leaving a fenced-in area of her yard. a sergeant with the clearlake police department tells me that her death definitely appears accidental. >> we have no reason to suspect any foul play. >> reporter: an autopsy will be done on mikaela's body later on this week, but according to the police sergeant, there are no obvious signs of trauma. i did get a chance to talk off camera with one of mikaela's relatives. she told me she and the family, they are all devastated by today's discovery. she also did say that she believed, in her words, mikaela ran free. we're live in afternoon in clearlake, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. coming up at 6, the discovery at mikaela's body has

hit hard at her school in san francisco. the outpouring of emotion and some of the signs being put up there. she was trying to save the children. we learned today what the aunt of two little girls hit by a car did in the moments before that deadly crash. since we first brought you this story, there have been no arrests. ktvu's robert handa spoke with a family member who explained how it all happened. >> reporter: parents volunteered as crossing guards today, after a woman and her two nieces were hit by a driver of a silver suv near the campus yesterday afternoon. five-year killed. family members say they talked briefly with the aunt, who says she pushed the children to safety when she saw the suv approaching. >> i held the baby in the front, and i walked. when my sister see the car, she pushed on my little -- on the

two girls. pushed. but the car take the two, my sister and my niece. >> she's the one that pushed the niece away, though? >> yes. as protection. >> reporter: the family says it will demand san jose put in speed bumps or more traffic signs to slow down drivers. some neighbors say they have complained to the city many times before. >> it's horrible to see that a child has to die before something is done. >> i have not received any calls from concerned parents from this school. >> reporter: the family says they are supportive, even though it's too late to help eileen. >> it's terrible. my niece has died. so i don't know. >> reporter: police say they still need to interview the aunt, who is under sedation for broken ribs.

the family says she still does not know her niece was killed. homicide detectives in the south bay tonight are investigating the discovery of a woman's body inside a motel room. this happened just before 1:30 this afternoon at a holiday inn express on monterey road. police say an employee there called 911 to report the body. >> it was fairly obvious from the scene that some type of struggle took place inside the room. we're not sure what led up to the homicide but there is evidence of foul play and she does have injuries consistent with a homicide. >> investigators are looking for clues. there's no word yet on the identity of the victim. a three-alarm fire at an apartment complex in redwood city has left 20 people without a place to live tonight. the fire started in a carport at the complex on oakside avenue near fair oaks elementary school. it then spread to several apartments. newschopper 2 was overhead this morning. two people were slightly injured. a neighbor says that fire was

so intense, he actually thought his house was on fire. >> i grabbed my pets. i grabbed everything valuable, then i just pretty much ran out. >> tonight, investigators are still trying to figure out what caused that fire. and two people are without a home after their apartment complex went up in flames this morning in san jose. the fire started just before 9 on phelps avenue near the santa monica express way. everyone did get out safely. the san jose fire department sent us this picture of the building as flames were pouring out of the windows. at this point, still no word on what caused the fire. happening now, with every day that passes, the manhunt is intensifying for a suspect accused of killing his wife and two young daughters in humboldt county. ken is live. >> reporter: there's a community meeting that's about to start, gasia. you can see over my shoulder

here at the honey dew school. the county sheriff, a county supervisor and the school superintendent are all here to talk to the folks and give them the latest on what's going on in this manhunt. after a day off, the helicopters returned to the search effort. one from the department of homeland security and the other from the california highway patrol. swat teams are also checking local roads and they're hiking through the wilderness of the king range. authorities don't appear to be any closer to finding triple murder suspect shane miller. >> we're talking about wild lands. we're talking probably about the most remote area in california. >> reporter: in one unusual twist, a septic truck was called out to check out houses in case the suspect tried to toss a gun. >> so if there's a gun at the bottom of this outhouse, do you

think you'find it? >> yeah. >> really? why? >> just because we washed it out. we'd get a flash light in there and we could see what's going on. >> reporter: and i followed up with that man. he says no gun was found in one particular outhouse they were looking at. you can see schools are posted with sheriff's deputies who are keeping on eye on the school children. we also have late information that the lost coast is going to be closed until the end of the month. this is a sprawling wilderness area open to the public usually, but in this case authorities want to go through those areas and try to find shane miller. we'll have the latest on this community meeting on the 10:00 news. live in humboldt county. meanwhile, the family does, gigi, has turned up on a beach. investigators hope she will lead them to shane miller.

>> it's going to be cared for. we're going to check her for any possible trace evidence, you know, blood that may be on the dog. >> gigi was not hurt and is in good health. she'll soon be turned over to a miller family relative. investigators are trying to track down the hikers to see if they have any information that could lead them to shane miller. the port of oakland executive who charged taxpayers for taking clients to a suspected brothel in oakland has now officially resigned. this comes just a little over six months after ktvu channel 2 news first revealed the scandal. lawrence dunnigan was the manager of international marketing for the port. several informed sources, both inside and outside of the business, say he was taking people to a house of

prostitution. dunnigan did not return calls about his departure. a two-alarm grass fire started just after 2:00 this afternoon near the 400 block of wellington avenue. north county firefighters kept the flames away from homes. there were no reports of injuries or damage. employees at lockheed martin had to deal with smoke today. it was a building on lockheed martin way. firefighters say they actually had to use maps in their response to the alarms because of the size of the building. >> it took a while to find the seat of the fire, because the building is a large-sized building and it was toward the center of the building. but when we got to it, we were able to extinguish it rapidly. >> police say the fire broke out in a cubicle. a handful of employees will have to relocate for a few days. the exact cause of the fire is

under investigation. google is diving into music streaming. that was the big news today at the kickoff of google's six annual conference for software developers in san francisco. the music service will allow android users to listen to unlimited songs for about $10 a month. google also unveiled other new services. a jury this afternoon found jodi arias is eligible for the death penalty for the stabbing death of her former boyfriend. she was convicted in arizona last week of killing travis alexander. earlier today, some dramatic moments in court when the prosecutor told the courtroom to be silent for two minutes. he said that's how long alexander suffered as jodi arias continually stabbed him until he finally died. family members sobbed in the front row as the prosecutor was describing alexander's final moments. the case now moves to the final sentencing phase. the jury essentially has two options. either death for jodi arias or

lifeprison without the possibility of parole. o.j. simpson took the stand in las vegas today, making his own case for a new trial. simpn is the med robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers at a hotel in las vegas. simpson claims he was just trying to take back some of his own property. today, simpson argued his first attorney gave him bad advice, telling him he had the right to seize his own belongings. >> he gave me an example that if you were walking down the street and you saw your laptop with your name on it in a car, you can use force to break the window of the car to get the laptop. >> simpson also claims his former attorney passed up a plea deal which would have meant a shorter sentence. simpson's former attorney is set to testify on friday. call them the killer frogs of san francisco. we'll show you why they're kept under lock and key.

more now on the breaking news from south san jose. these are life pictures here from newschopper 2. we have learned about a triple stabbing inside a home on viewmont in the south san jose neighborhood. here's what we have just learned. one of the victims was an adult female. two of the other victims are both children under the age of five. we do not know at this point the severity of the injuries. but, again, three people stabbed. an adult female and two kids under the age of five. this is going on in south san jose on viewmont. we are working to get more information. as we do, we will bring it to you. a comment made by the president of the university of california sparked a loud disruption and arrests at a regents meeting in san francisco today demonstrators were loud and 13 people were arrested after the uc president said a planned

strike would endanger public health, students and health workers. union representatives accuse the regents of spending too much money on management and not enough on patients. the strikes are planned for may 21 and 22 at several facilities. it turns out more people are being scammed on their smartphones than on their computers. and the reason appears to be because people don't take the same precautions with their phones that they take with their computers. for example, a recent federal reserve report says people are three times more likely to respond to a phishing on their smartphone than on a computer. a scary and potentially violent situation today for a nurse at a vallejo hospital. officials say that a patient

threatened a nurse sometime before 8 this morning. police in the hospital staff took action and resolved the situation. kaiser is not releasing specifics about what happened because of patient privacy laws. still, officials say the hospital is providing support for the nurse and treatment for the patient. > >> they're being called killer frogs, because they carry a disease that's wiping out native frogs in golden gate park. the extreme steps being taken to try to get rid of that's killer frogs, once and for all. >> reporter: also, there's new information today from scientists. we're just off john f. kennedy drive here in golden gate park. just over that fence experts say is a prime breeding ground for killer frogs. state and local officials are trying to eliminate them from golden gate park's lily pond. they are using tarps, gas, and old-fashioned hand trapping. these frogs tested positive for

out native species. >> millions of frogs dying out in ways that we've never seen before. that's a catastrophe. >> reporter: they identified the fungus with dna analysis. it's a microscopic parasite from africa. it rode on frogs brought to america for research. they got out and so did the fungus. california's yellow-legged frog, and an astonishing 40% of all frogs worldwide are become driven to extinction in three decades. california academy of sciences' specimen collection is key to tracking down the killer. >> each one of those individual specimens is a record of that species in place and time. >> reporter: scientists are now studying the frogs' survival mechanism. >> they don't even show signs of disease and yet they're infected. what are they doing differently than these species here in california?

>> reporter: he told me he found this specialized bacteria that kills the fungus. researchers are considering releasing the bacteria in the wild to protect native frogs. he says you can help by never releasing any nonnative frog or la today, actress angelina jolie is saying her double mastectomy is just the first step in her plan to avoid getting cancer. jolie says she also plans to have her ovaries removed as soon as possible. the oscar-winning actress says she decided on the surgeries after discovering she had a gene associated with breast and ovarian cancer. she says she went public to help other women embrace the idea of preventive surgery as an option. it was a little cooler today and the winds were noticeable. sands blowing around out there. gusts along the coast. 25, 30 miles an hour. breezy in most neighborhoods.

a train hit a person today. at this point, no word on that person's position. an amtrak spokesperson said the person was walking on the tracks but didn't provide any information about the person's gender or identity. the train was traveling from sacramento to san jose. the incident forced amtrak trains to bypass the hayward station this afternoon. and a fatal caltrain accident caused big delays for commuters on the peninsula this morning. someone was hit and killed this morning. caltrans says the accident happened where there is no crossing. the tracks were shut down for about an hour and trains slowly resumed their schedules after that. bart was honoring caltrain tickets during the cal closure. the interim chief has wasted no time in making his name and face known throughout the city. shawn went has spent the past few days on a tour of oakland.

of last year. the 12-year-old boy accused of killing his 8-year-old sister appeared in court today. ken was actually in that courtroom as well and tells us what happened and why the attorneys for the family have a lot of questions about the charges. ken? >> reporter: well, those attorneys say that 12-year-old boy, who is now being held in a juvenile detention center outside of the county, is holding up well. his parents were here in court today. they are supporting their son, despite the accusations. the father of both a murdered daughter and a son accused walked to court this morning with attorneys retained just two days ago. eight-year-old leila fowler was stabbed to death at the family's home on april 27. saturday her 12-year-old brother was arrested and brought to court today under guard. the charges, including second- degree murder, read in this courtroom. no cameras allowed during the hearing. the family did not answer

questions. their attorney spoke on their behalf. >> i can tell you, this is a very good family. and like any good family, this is extremely problematic for them. >> reporter: the family is mourning a daughter and supporting a son, who was told by the judge that he could face detention until age 23 if found responsible for his sister's murder. >> they are obviously extremely concerned about their son, who they also dearly love. >> reporter: in court, the 12- year-old boy answered yes to the judge's questions in a soft- spoken and calm voice. his mother, seen her exiting the courthouse, cried during the hearing. no plea was entered or evidence offered. >> what forensic evidence is out there? how solid is it? >> reporter: the defense attorney says he, like the community, has many questions. >> how could a 12-year-old commit an offense like this in such a way that would not lead to an immediate arrest? it would take 2,000 hours of law enforcement resources and

youngstrom's name was added to a memorial wall at the capital. tonight, a settlement that involves a multibillion class action lawsuit accusing credit card companies of fleecing businesses. for example, they say the companies charged an unreasonably high interchange fee. that's when someone uses a credit or debit card to pay parking fees. oakland says that's costing taxpayers about a million a year. the head of a youth soccer league is facing charges of embezzlement and grand theft tonight. they report that missy gurin turned herself into police. she is suspected of stealing more than $30,000 from the youth soccer league. she is the second president to be accused of stealing money.

east. doctors say it is similar to pneumonia and related to sars. the virus has been spread between people in the past but a medical worker being infected by a patient is new. 40 people in parts of europe and the middle east have caught the bug since september. half of them died. good news for bay area homeowners. your house is likely worth a good deal more than it was one month ago. dataquick says the new median price for homes in the nine bay area counties have risen. it's the first time in five years the median price has gone above half a million. april's price was up 17% for march and up 31% from the year earlier. stock market rally continued today. the dow added 60 points. nasdaq gained nine. the washington monument is covered with scaffolding.

the national park service released helmet cam video today of workers putting the top of the scaffolding in place. that happened on monday. the monument has been closed since august of 2011, when it was damaged by a 5.8 earthquake. crews will be repairing stress cracks throughout the entire structure. the job is expected to take at least the rest of the year. firefighters in wisconsin now have a huge wild fire just about contained. but not before it destroyed more than a dozen homes. it started yesterday and quickly burned more than 8700 acres. dozens of families had to evacuate. so far, 47 buildings have been lost, including 17 homes, but fortunately no one was hurt and crews now have the fire about 95% contained. authorities are investigating whether a spark from logging equipment may have started that fire. the unique test to determine if bolts on the bay f

many. that's why the most critical bolts on the bridge will soon be taking a saltwater bath. they say the anchor bolts that are still performing correctly are far better than the defective broken bolts made in 2008. >> to date, all the problems we have are on the bolts from 2008. >> the mechanical properties of the bolts made in 2010 do differ from the bolts that were made in 2008. >> at this point, i don't see an immediate problem with the remaining bolts. >> reporter: but will the newer bolts perform well months, years or decades into the future as designed? >> what is caltrans going to do to earn the trust of the public, for them to say, look, this is a safe bridge? >> reporter: one of the things caltrans will do is try to age some of the bolts years and years ahead in just a few weeks. first, they will attach giant

okay. so who do you think is the highest paid athlete in the country? here's the answer. it's floyd mayweather. he is expected to earn $90 million this year. a distant second is nba star lebron james at $56.5 million. mayweather also led the list last year. los angeles police ordered the evacuation of an apartment complex and three other buildings today after discovering several explosive devices. it all started after a traffic stop last night turned up a weapon, drugs and a pipe bomb inside a man's car. a search of his apartment complex in culver city led to the discovery of more explosives. police have not yet released the man's name and say the incident does not involve terrorism. a police spokesperson said the man was just curious about explosive devices and build several of them.

a worldwide agreement to improve safety conditions in bangladesh. the agreement is backed by mostly european retailers and comes after more than 1100 people died when their factory collapsed in bangladesh. the five-year contract would require the retailers to help pay for fire safety and billing improvements. the national retail federation said the agreement is not, in its words, flexible enough and would leave retailers open to legal action. the release of documents that indicate the cia was responsible for describing the attack as a violent demonstration instead of a terrorist attack. republicans have accused the white house of mishanding the benghazi response. her job was to investigate the misconduct of police officers.
