[laughter] developing news in the south bay. we have late word of an arre after three people were stabbed, two of them killed. one of the victims was just a year old. good evening, everyone. i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. sheriffs deputies say they have caught their man. a six hour man hunt is now over after a woman and child were killed today in a triple stabbing. we get the developing news from heather holmes. he is live near the home off

allen rock. >> reporter: i have learned that the threat to this community is finally over. just within the last 15 minutes i have been told that authorities did catch their suspect. that was this man, ruben ramirez. ramirez has been wanted ever since the three people were found stabbed to death inside a home home. a news conference has been planned for about 30 minutes from now. this caps a sad and chaotic day for this community. the hours long intense man hunt received additional support tonight. police joined sheriffs deputies in their search for stabbing suspect ruben ramirez. >> we know he resides at that residence. >> reporter: investigators say the 27-year-old ramirez is related to the victims and they all lived together in home

on viewmont. this afternoon another family member arrived at the house and made the disturbing discovery. >> i don't know what happened. what happened? >> reporter: this man and other family members were visibly upset, shocked their loved ones, a 40-year-old woman and a 1-year-old boy were killed. another child hospitalized. and that a relative is accused of the crime. >> this is tragic to me. it's something that i didn't think would happen. >> reporter: dominic lives a few houses from stabbing scene. he was one of the many residents turned away. >> i've seen him there before. >> reporter: ramirez who authorities tell me suffers from mental illness is known on the block. he wonders if something could have been done. >> my neighbor telling me stories about this guy that's been called numerous times. police that's been called on. yeah, i'm surprised nobody's done anything about this guy

before. >> reporter: again, we are awaiting an upcoming news conference to find out more about the arrest of ruben ramirez. the man suspected in this triple stabbing. reporting live, heather holmes, ktvu channel 2 news. homicide investigators are looking into the case of a woman found dead in a hotel room. there are obvious signs of a struggle inside the room. her body was discovered after a motel employee called police at about 1:20 this afternoon. so far there is no word on her identity. now to developing news out of north texas where at least three people have died after tornadoes tore through four counties. these are the first images we're getting in after tornadoes struck at about 8:00 tonight. it touched down in the town of granbury. more than 100 people were

injured. many homes were destroyed. authorities are reporting some people are trapped inside their flattened homes. it was a day of severe weather in texas. check out this roof camera which captured lightning. this is video of a tornado as t millsap. it's all believed to be part of the the same super cell that hit granbury tonight. the tornado reportedly touched down several times. >> there's nothing left. our neighborhood is gone. it's just gone. >> this woman managed to escape the tornado with her children, but said there are still people missing in her neighborhood. emergency experiences say crews are going thousands house looking for anyone trapped or dead. for the next hour, tornado watch e remains in effect for 32 counties in texas and 4 in oklahoma. >> bill martin has been monitoring the radar and those

intense storms. >> yeah, this is the time of year. they get severe weather in this part of the country. they're getting it tonight. this is the last six hours of this super cell of area of storms. moving through dallas right now. obviously the fort worth area. these are ground reports. what these tell us are there's three tornadoes that have touched down. let's go next to this tornado. it's going to give us that report. this is a ground observer. they're reporting hail in this storm almost three inches. three inches is bigger than a golf ball. these hailstones coming out of these storms, huge. where do we stand right now? the system is being supported from the upper atmosphere. it's not just the heat driven thing. the sunsets and it's still a nasty storm. it's still producing tornadic activity. there's more concerns for yosee

the tranquility of the creek. >> it's been traumatic for the community. everyone can relate to what it would be like to lose a child. >> reporter: well wishers have left flowers at the home. mikaela lynch wandered away. neighbors say they were hoping that the search would not end this way. >> it was a shock for all of us. everybody chipped in. my wife and i went up and down the street too. all over this whole area. it was really sad. >> reporter: tonight mikaela's teachers at san francisco sunset elementary school texted me that mikaela touched them deeply. they say they've learned to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. we love her and will always remember our bug. >> when she laughs -- >> reporter: they describe her as an endearing child.

her autism didn't curb her enthusiasm for life. she loved horses and played soccer in the special olympics. >> we want everyone to know our mikaela has a magnetics personality. she makes everyone fall in love with her. >> reporter: we were shown these handwritten messages of hope that were created by children here at clear lake who helped search for mikaela. church leaders say they're planning to hold a prayer vigil to help this community heal. live at clear lake, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >> students and staff at mikaela's school were devastated by today's news. the principal sent a letter to the parents of the students. one tearful parent pledged support to mikaela's family. >> we were all very sad for mikaela to go missing. we're sad about the news today. and our community will be pulling together to support the family in whatever way we can.

>> school officials also say crisis response team is available for anyone who needs it. the owner of a party bus business was arrested today on charges including vecular manslaughter. john reno st. james owns party bus of santa cruz. natasha noland died last summer after falling out of one of the buss. among other things the indictment accuses st. james of gross negligence in the maintenance of his buses. if convicted he faces up to 6 years in prison. president obama took action today to deal with the growing backlash involving the irs targeting of tea party groups for extra scrutiny. the president said the act the head of the internal revenue service is out. >> i will not tolerate this kind of behavior in any agosy. especially in the irs. given the power that it has and the reach that it has in all of our lives. >> the administration requested

and received the resignation of acting commissioner steven miller. a house committee questioned eric holder today. house speaker john boehner says he wants to see someone go to jail. the white house released a controversy, releasing 100 pages of e-mails about the attack on benghazi. the documents suggest top officials the cia obct to comments about al qaeda, islamicic extremists and prior warnings. scandals in washington and problems building a $6 billion bridge. can americans trust the government to do the right thing? mike mibach was told a lack of faith has consequences. >> reporter: the city of san francisco downtown u.s. flags on top of buildings. and opinions down on the streets. >> i just i do. i trust my government.

through mercedes-benz financial services. san francisco is going to be a busy place this sunday. it's the annual beta breakers race. thousands of runners and thousands of other people just coming out to watch. this year there will also be extra security because of the boston marathon bombings. there are several other things you need to be aware of as well. >> reporter: we're at ocean beach. it might seem early. we found these signs. 5:00 a.m., in just under 7 hours they are going to be closing this ocean beach parking lot to set up for the

race. the race is on for street crews rushing through 12 hour shifts to finish painting lines on the great highway before the finish line goes up for the 102nd beta breakers race. >> the great highway will be the location of our post race festival. once the finishers cross the finish line they'lableto pick up their t-shirt and go get food, beer garden. >> reporter: in golden gate park today many people were out on last minute training runs. >> this is my first time in costume. >> reporter: organizers say security will be tighter in the wake of the boston marathon bombings. backpacks will be banned. there will be more officers and private guards along the course. >> there will be additional visible security and then security that is not visible. >> anything to happen -- security probably calls people down. >> reporter: the race which has become famous for including

centipede running groups, costumed runners seemed to have gained popularity with residents who had opposed the large floats, alcohol and chaos of past years. >> trash, kegs, garbage, people urinating in my plants. it was pretty bad. now people st another streets. concern we did see dumpsters and no insigns already in place today. race organizers say fencing along the course and more portable toilets, 1,086 helped out last year. 26,000 people have registered. online registration ends in just under two hours. the beta breakers race kicks off at 7:00 a.m. at howard and peel streets. that's not the only major event. the final stage of the tour california is also kicking off.

problem. arson is suspected in an apartment fire that left two residents with minor injuries. the fire broke out shortly after 5:00 this morning at a complex on oak side road which elementary school. news chopper 2 was over the fire shortly after it began. the flames were spreading quickly opinion even people next door were evacuated. >> i grabbed everything that valuable and just ran out. >> investigators are concentrating on the carport as the possible starting point of that fire. carports have been targeted in the area. as for the building, fire officials say it appears to be a total loss and that 25 residents will have to find a new place to live. the search for triple homicide suspect is being scaled back. shane miller is wanted for killing his wife and two young daughters. ken wayne has been in hum bolt county and tells us about the hunt that has gone cold. >> reporter: the sheriff had

news the community didn't want to hear. shane miller hasn't been seen in a week. authorities don't know where he is and don't even know if he's still alive. >> we have found nothing at this point. so it's almost as though the pickup was ditched and he evaporated. >> reporter: still, two helicopters resumed the aerial search of the rugged lost coast today and s.w.a.t. teams checked vehicles in the area where miller was first spotted on the run last wednesday. >> we have units out there who are experts at tracking. that's what we're looking for. at this point we locate a lot of signs, whether it's connected to our individual or not is two different things. >> reporter: investigators called in a septic company to check out houses are miller was spotted to see if he tried to disguard a weapon. >> if there's a gun at the bottom of this would you be able to find it?

>> yeah. we wash it out and make it clean and get a flashlight in there and can see what's going on. >> reporter: they recovered miller's small dog. found on the beach by tourists. >> it's going to be cared for and we're just going to check it for any possible trace evidence. blood that may be on the dog. >> reporter: school attendance has returned to normal. deputies will not be posted at schools as they have been. some residents bristled at officers coming on to their properties but now say they understand. >> especially when you hear they're coming down and just letting themselves into your homes. but i guess i didn't have the full story on that. so i feel like i got it today. >> reporter: these police check points are going to be taken down after tonight. but what will remain closed is the king range. that's the popular lost coast recreation area. that will stay closed through the end of the month. ken wayne, ktvu channel 2 news.

teenagers. other teenagers. they are believed to be 15 or 16 years old. police say all of the boys knew each other. a motive is unknown. relatives of a san jose spe her bravery in ments before an suv struck and killed a 5-year-old girl. robert handa learned what the aunt did to try to save her niece from being hit. >> reporter: parents volunteered as crossing guards today around park view school after a woman and her two nieces were hit by the driver of a silver suv yesterday afternoon. a 5-year-old girl was killed. her aunt and her 2-year-old sister were injured. they talked with the aunt. >> i walk in -- see the car fast. push -- the car take it too.

we have learned more details now from tonight's developing story out of the south bay where a suspect in a triple stabbing has been captured tonight. sheriffs deputy assonanced that ruben ramirez was located in san francisco. they wouldn't say where in the city the man was found. ramirez was wanted in connection with a triple stabbing at a home this afternoon. two of the three victim, a 48- year-old grandmother and a 1- year-old boy were killed. a 3-year-old girl was taken to the hospital. ramirez has a history of mental illness. he is related to the victims and lived in the house. new at 10, bicyclists gathered to remember fellow cyclists killed or injured while riding their bikes. the so-called ride of silence is an international event. it aims to raise the awareness of drivers, police and city leaders about the rights of bike riders. it's a chance to honor the

the property's owner says he's hired security guards. a warning that what you see is not always what you get when it comes to the food you buy. in tonight's special report, the results of lab tests that ktvu did. they prove calorie labels aren't always accurate. >> reporter: the next time you roll a cart around the grocery store, know diet deceiving numbers could be lurking. you would never know it by looking at the label on the packaging. >> i hope they're accurate. >> reporter: in fact, not all calorie counts are correct. the government only requires nutritional facts to fall within a range of the actual amount. the real number can be up to 20% more. >> that would disturb me to know it is significantly more. >> reporter: a mcdonald's fish filet sandwich was 400- calories. and a subway club sandwich came

up at 380-calories. 70 more than advertised. and with almost 3 times as much fast than posted. >> i don't appreciate that very much. i'd rather know honestly then i can make the choice. >> reporter: we wanted to find out how accurate labels are. we hired a lab to test the triggal make up. we shopped at four different stores and restaurants and bought a range of items from wraps and burritos to cookies and how oftens. what we found was every label was off. this banana nut muffin was listed to have 730-calories but our tests showed it 637. a hummus wrap supposed to have 360-calories had 365. and this chocolate chip cookie had 832-calories.

the bottom line is when counting calories the math can be fuzzy. and every calorie counts for the clients trying to lose weight. >> if you have three different meals that each of them had an extra 80-calories, that's basically a meal within itself. >> reporter: our sample was small. expert says it's rare, but when the government checks the accuracy of a label it tests dozens of the same item. >> these are all of our different classes. >> reporter: nutrition advisor has been in the field for 30 years and says it's too time consuming and expensive for companies to test everything. bigger chains may have more accurate calorie counts while smaller producers don't have the funds to test the food. >> a lot of us feel that there is a lot of wiggle room there. i would think that you probably are getting more calories. >> reporter: in the meantime, shop for fresh produce and meats.

now to where a 12-year-old boy accused of killing his sister appeared in court for the first time. no cameras were allowed. a judge told the brother of leila fowler he could be behind bars if r the next 11 years if convicted. >> how could a 12-year-old commit an offense that would lead to an immediate rest?

it would take 2000 hours before they felt that it pointed toward him. >> the boy did not enter a plea. he is due back in court in two weeks. >> we have learned a man hit by an amtrak train has now died. sheriff's deputies say the 50- year-old man walked around a lowered crossing bar about 2:30 this afternoon. he was taken to the hospital but he later died. the train on its way from sacramento to san jose. train service is back to normal. ♪
