wondering around the downtown area is now trapped inside an aqua duct, robert honda is live with the strategies they are using to try to free the animal. >> reporter: tory we are hear along an aqueduct, which as you mentioned it has turned into an unintentional cage for a young mountain lion basically trapped inside. if you take a look you can see a team getting ready to tranquilize an animal that is scared and hiding. we know that because we have been watching it for a little while now. earlier this morning it was trying to scale the concrete sliding unsuccessfully and has been trying to do that for a while and now has given up, so while it is bad for the mountain lion it is god for the police since it presents no immediate danger. right now we are waiting and admiring the beauty of the

animal while they wait for them to tranquilize and remove it and return it to a natural habitat. as tory mentioned it was first spotted around water street around 4:00 a.m. and then spotted over the next several hours. >> we seem to be having a problem there with robert honda's microphone but once again you could see the mountain lion that is trapped in this aqua duct basically in santa cruz, downtown, so we have crews there monitoring the situation and obviously a cage there for when they successfully manage to trap the animal they will be able to safely get him out and robert will monitor it and we have updates on ktvu.com and at 5:00 and 6:00. the city of hercules says it might have to shut down its police department ty

voters don't approve a tax increase next month. that is not all. new at noon we are learning about other programs that could be on the chopping block. sal castaneda is live there to let us know what is stake here. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, tory, as you mentioned hercules does have its own police department but that could change next month. hercules city officials say unless residents approve a utility tax hike the city will no longer be able to afford its own police department. on june 4th measure a will ask voters for an increase in the utility tax from 6 to 8%. >> we have been talking with the county sheriff about the costs of outsourcing police services to the county. we will probably have to go to the county if measure a doesn't pass. >> hercules is a city of 24,000 people with a 12.9 million dollar budget. the city manager says the city

collects 2.2 million dollars on a 6% tax on electric, phone, water and gas bills, if the measure a is approved the city stands to collect 1 million dollars more. although city leaders are optimistic about the measure passing the city manager told us the worse case budget is being drawn up. in addition to cutting those police, other program cost also get the axe. >> day camps through the summer are big money losers so we could not afford to continue that. >> at least one resident we spoke with is against it. >> terrible you got to have a police department. >> so it is safe to say you are going to vote for measure a? >> yes. >> hercules has 21 police officers. if the county takes over they would do with less in this area. that election is june 4th, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. investigators are

considering charges against a man in custody following a triple stabbing in santa clara county. a grandmother and her baby grandson were killed in that attack. one of their relatives, 28-year- old reuben ramirez, who has a history of mental illness was detained last night in san francisco. he lives in the house where the 48-year-old woman and one-year- old boy were fatally stabbed. a three-year-old girl is hospitalized in stable condition. a neighbor who does not want to be identified says the sheriff's department had been called to the house on other occasions. >> i have seen the sheriff's department out here several times. the dad said he was schizophrenic is what he told me but he was never a problem out here in the neighborhood, he was never a problem. >> investigators are interviewing ramirez and have not yet decided if he will be charged in the case. san jose police are investigating a brutal machete killing overnight at a shopping

man's body was found after 1:00 a.m. in the parking lot there. police received a 911 call saying a man had been severely beaten and was lying on the ground. police sources tell us the man was beaten with a machete and spent most of the morning looking for additional weapons. no word on whether any more were found and no motive is known and no arrests have been made. the police are asking to the public's help to track down a homicide suspect. 43-year-old julio mago is wanted in connection with the killing of veronica lozano. an employee there at the hotel found her body there early yesterday morning. detectives believe he may be attempting to flee to mexico and should be considered armed and dangerous. a woman in her 60s was shot to death inside her home in

richmond by bullets fired from outside. a richmond police spokesman says they got the 911 call before 11:00 p.m. last night from a home on 20th street. officers arrived to find a woman in her mid-60s with fatal injuries. the contra costa county corner's office says they are not releasing her name until her relatives are notified. a judge handed down sentences to four young men for the attempted murder of a highway patrol officer. new at noon ktvu's tara moriarty is live in oakland with how long these prison sentences are. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, tory, you know the message here was clear, come after one of our officers and we will make you pay. the 4 young men were convicted for a carjacking and the attempted murder of a police officer and received sentences from 27 years to probation. we just wrapped up a press conference a few minutes ago here at new

interim chief, chp, u.s. marshals and the d.a.'s office all announced the sentences. they never made it to a trial, they came down last week, the most severe was for joseph gonzalez, who got 24 years for shooting at him and trying to ram his stolen car into the patrol car. it happened last july on 50th avenue at night. the chp officer was assisting opd with patrols. they tried to pull over a van and he was shot at by gonzalez, driving a black acura, the officer wasn't hurt by law enforcement worked through september to catch them all. >> law enforcement stands together combating violent crime, especially when one of our own is targeted. >> our office stands ready in cases such as these to protect our protectors, the line law enforcement that are on the street when they are assaulted by brazen criminals.

>> reporter: and we are working to get mug shots on all four of the criminals who are said to have been related to a gang. 17-year-old kenyon thomas received probation, san santer received eight years and david gonzalez received three years. the group was on their way to a mall in hayward when they carjacked a woman and then the shooting and the police officer tried to pull over a van in front of them. the chp officer is back on the streets and gonzalez is expected to be formally sentenced here on june 28th. live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> tornadoes touched down in north texas overnight, killing at least six people. an amateur photographer shot this video in granbury, it is one of several small communities devastated southwest of fort worth. seven people are unaccounted

to repeat a few things, we are here along an aqua duct and this is where the mountain lion have been sort of unintentionally trapped in a cage in this water channel. down the path you can see the rescue workers getting ready to tranquilize the animal and we will sw you video of the animal as you can see you will see it seemed scared and is hiding. we have been watching it try to get up this concrete siding unsuccessfully earlier this morning, about 15 to 20 foot climb so it has been difficult for it. right now we have been told by deputy chief steve clark that state fish and game workers are getting in position to tranquilize the animal. the state fish and game people will shoot the animal from the other side of the aqua duct and rescue workers including from the puma project will come in and try to cover up the mountain lion's eyes to try to remove stimulation and try to keep it as doseil as it has

been, however if it reacts to the shot it is capable of running 200 or 300 yards in either direction before it takes effect, so that is why they have people back so far, so anyway that is about to happen they say in the next 5010 minutes but of course they have moved that schedule a couple of times so we can see the workers getting in position, again they will tranquilize it and then watch its effect and move in and try to crate the animal if it doesn't react too violently, if it does they have workers stationed 2 to 300 yards in either direction in case. we have a photographer george busses george bustos who will capture the scene and try to get that later. otherwise a full report later. thank you. >> thanks for the update. bart passengers this

morning had an unusual service disruption to deal with, a man climbed on the trains, we have details on why he did it and why the police were not surprised. >> reporter: this is how it ended a 29-year-old man on top of a train surrounded by police. >> he kept saying don't hurt me, i need help, don't hurt me, repeatedly. >> reporter: he somehow got in that door and once inside climbed upstairs and got into that room 25 feet above the platform, that was 5:30 and he was just getting started. >> the train is on the platform, he jumps off the roof and jumps on the train on the plat tomorrow. >> he ran down the train's roof and jumped on to the tracks while confused riders watched. >> he jumped across the track and jumped across. >> what did you think?

around the area with the bay to breakers and those people making their way. signs have been posted and crews doing last minute road work around san francisco ahead of the 102nd running of the bay to breakers, that happens on sunday. organizers say security will be bo m security along the courseto bre mentioned starts sunday at 7:00 a.m. at howard and beal streets over an hour before cyclists take off a start effort final stage of the tour of california, leaving the marina green at 8:15 and ending in santa rosa. tomorrow the bike race will come to the bay area and peddling through the south bay, there will be a 19 mile time trial that starts on bailey avenue and finishes on metcalf road. on saturday the racers will begin in livermore and continue to danville and end at the top of mt. diablo state park.
