known as granny. these are live pictures from the woman who was shot and killed last night while she was sleeping. police say a gunman unleashed gunfire from a rifle right into her unit. police think the gunman was aiming for her son. neighbors say granny loved to garden. >> we loved and respected her. she was the soul of the building. it won't be the same without her. >> police say her son cent defrauded people in the neighborhood. at this point no one has been arrested. for the second time this week a child has been hit by a car in san jose. it happened this afternoon infront of a middle school -- in front of a middle school. the child was walking in a old

cross work that was painted out. the victim was taken to the hospital. we don't know how badly the child was hurt. two days ago a girl was struck and killed outside another school. a child psychiatrist at the center of a scandal pleaded no contest to charges of child molestation. william ayres will serve several years behind bars in connection with the molestation of boys in his care. a 2009 case against william ayres ended in a mistrial. jury selection was underway this week for a second trial. a teacher who pleaded no contest to 9 counts of sex with a 14-year-old student has been ordered to serve 90 days. she was supposed to be sentenced yesterday but instead a judge ordered an evaluation.

the teacher began a relationship with the boy over facebook messages and playing words with friends. san jose police say a man who was beaten to death at a shopping center this morning was attacked with a machete. he was found before 1:30 a.m. this morning. firefighters arrived on the scene but couldn't save him. police haven't released the man's name. in san jose detectives are trying to figure out how a woman whose body was discovered in a motel died. the body was found in a room at the holiday inn yesterday afternoon. police named a man as the suspect. he may be in a white 1996 chevy with california license plate number 3rwr194. authorities think he may be heading to mexico. he should be considered armed

and dangerous. police swarmed a water way today to free a trapped mountain lion. ktvu's robert handa shows us what it took to get the cat out. robert? >> reporter: we are along the aqueduct where we watched the mountain lion being rescued. they believe the lion came down from the wilderness and there are plans to release it after we watched the group conduct a tense rescue. >> reporter: they observed the untain lion for hours before shooting it with a tranquilizer dart but after it was hit it ran and staggered into more bushes. they were worried the animal would react that way. >> very unpredictable situation. we don't know how the animal will react.

and we n'en they approached the animal it still look threatening enough that they backed off and he shot it with another dart. >> in testing the animal we determined it was safer and he would be better off if we administered a second dose of the medicine to the animal. >> reporter: the animal was taken under a bridge where a veterinarian declared the animal healthy and strong enough to be taken back to the wild. >> he came down here, let's get him out of here. it is dangerous for him. he could be shot. they are going going to put him someplace that is far away from people so he leads a normal life. >> reporter: they did not want to say where or when he would be released but it is a young animal and weighs less than 100 pounds. so it will be kept under

observation till they are sure it is recovered. live, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. police found credit card swimming devices at two gas stations -- skimming devices at two gas stations this week. police say it had only been installed a few hours prior to them getting them and on wednesday another skimmer was found. investigators say both devices were installed inside the pump making it impossible for customers to see them. violence in american culture could be soon covered in california schools. they approved a bill to create lesson plans on violence awareness and prevention. if approved schools would be left to decide whether to include the lessons. there is new trouble for the parks department following allegation as company they

for stabbing his mother and nephew to death had frequent contact with police. ktvu's rob roth is live where neighbors knew the man suffered from mental illness. rob? >> reporter: family members are keeping to themselves here at this house authorities announceeyof the relatives who lived here. ruben ramirez. >> reporter: ruben ramirez is under arrest for stabbing to death his mother and nephew and the attempted murder of his niece. neighbors say he has a history of mental illness and said he heard voices. his neighbor said when his children was outside an adult was always next to them. >> be very cautious. with him. we know his condition. his mental state. yeah. one precaution we have always taken. >> the sheriff's department confirms having frequent contact with ruben ramirez.
