this morning the search is on for whoever shot and killed two people on a bay area freeway. it all happened overnight. we'll tell you what we are learning about the investigation this morning. also an officer dragged during a police shooting in the east bay over night. the many questions about that gunfire. part of a freeway that used to be covered in graffiti and cleared up earlier this week has been targeted again by vandals. we are live in san jose trying to find out what is going to be done now. another campaign to get high-tech workers to move out of silicon valley. this one has to do with immigration laws. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning thank you for joining us i'm pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark.

>> i have patchy low clouds around. it's a cool morning as well. temperatures 40s and 50s. some of that low cloud deck is persisting a little bit. but it will be sunny to mostly sunny today. cool, breezy but warming up a little bit. 60s and 70s. steve, good morning. westbound 24 looks pretty good as you drive through the caldecott tunnel. if you are driving from walnut creek to oakland it should be a pretty nice drive for you. the onramp to interstate 580 is still closed to 238 in castro valley. due to an officer involved shooting. this is a live picture of the police activity. the alameda county sheriff office says the onramp could remain shut down until noon today. stay with ktvu we'll let you know when and if the ramp opens. this is a look at some of the video earlier of the ramp. the shooting happened around 11:15 last night. deputies were chasing a suspected stolen car. the driver got out and quickly caught. investigators say one passenger

grabbed the wheel and tried to take off while tangling up with a deputy. that is when other deputy shot the suspect. a total of three people have been arrested. let's go back to the desk. we have new details about a freeway shooting in oakland. two people were killed on interstate 880 this is right during warriors fans trying to drive home from last night's playoff game. claudine wong is in oakland this morning. and has new information the search for suspects continues claudine. >> reporter: that is right, pam. we are at the jackson street onramp to interstate 880 northbound direction. because this is where it all happened. there were shell casings found along that onramp and up on to the freeway where the two victims were found dead. a lot of physical evidence was found out here that is why they were shut down for so many hours. let's take you through what we know. there is a press conference

held just an hour ago. just as you said the warriors game was just getting out. it was about some kind of collision and an ambulance was on route. then six minutes later oakland police got a call into their dispatch center about shots fired and an argument in the area. then as the first chp officers got on the scene, on interstate 80, they quickly realized they had much more on their hands. >> this is a preliminary investigation. what we know so far there was a white porsche either entering the freeway here at jackson street or already on the freeway. at some point, gunshots were fired. parties inside of the white porshe were struck by the gunfire. the driver of the white porshe was discovered dead inside the vehicle. >> reporter: but the driver wasn't the only one hit by the bullets. there was also appeasessier

inside that course. after the man got shot once out of the car he was hit by one passing car, maybe more. there is no one in custody. police are still trying to piece together what happened. they do not know where the victim's were coming from. certainly we asked if they were going to or from the warriors game because that was happening at the same time. there was nothing indicating that they were there. nothing on the clothing or in their car. what we know about the victim's both appear in their mid 20s. both african american. other than that we still don't know anything. what we can tell you there is a lot of witnesses. a lot of cars in and around this area from people who stopped that had seen something or again one of the victim's hit multiple times possibly by passing cars. at this point interviews are under way and the chp is asking anyone who might have been in this area to gi call.

early. canadians are hiring high- tech workers hoping to employ immigrants. starting today a canadian representative will tour the bay area promoting canada's simplified immigration policy. san jose just days after a big graffiti cleanup project took place the graffiti is back. janine de la vega is live in san jose to tell us about it and show us the problem. janine. >> reporter: we were here on monday and the homeless people that live around here tell me they see taggers all the time doing this. now take a look at what this train trestle looks like. you see this black spray point is above there. it's not as much as used to be up there. here's video we took earlier this week when it was pointed over. it was a major under taking that took a year to that was on

monday and then the city has received many complaints about the graffiti at that location and other south bay bridges and overpasses. that is why they wanted to help take action. so that taggers wouldn't come back and put graffiti back up. but again as you can see that graffiti is there and taggers struck again. somehow they went around the barricades and risked their lives to go do this again. homeless people that i spoke to earlier this week again told me it's almost like a challenge for them. whenever they see new point up there it's like a canvas. i have put in some -- waiting to hear back toe if we'll [that to you if they are respond

coming up later in the morning news. big crowds. lots to see this weekend. and something else this year tighter security. the increase in security comes after the boston marathon bombings last month. the san francisco police have added these extra security cameras to a various spots along the route. they have also installed see through trash cans that can be searched very easily. large backpacks are banned from this year's event. police are encouraging anybody if you see anything suspicious call the authorities immediately. in the meantime san franciscoless are still searching for suspects. steven martin was attacked and -- police released photos of possible suspects. including a man wearing a 49ers jersey and a woman in an orange tutu. if you have any information ge

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. take a look at this how a car ends up in a swimming pool. we have the amazing video of a high speed crash in florida. surveillance video shows a white car speeding going northbound in the southbound lanes and slammed into a parked car sending that rental car into a motel swimming pool. the suspect was taken to the hospital. it's unclear what caused her to speed and drive the wrong way. if you try to camp out in your car in palo alto you may

be forced to go somewhere else. uneared eyewitness that bans people from sleeping in their cars is being debated. the decision comes after a number of people sleeping in their car at the center. 20-30 people sleep in their cars on any given night. the city had reached out to local faith groups to open their parking lots but they say that has been unsuccessful so far. time now 6:15. happening now in washington, d.c. congress now debating how to regulate drone airplanes here in the u.s.. these are live pictures of the testimony. a house committee hearing just started. the privacy concerns have been raised about law enforcement using drones. several lawmakers want to -- this is the second congressional hearing on this matter this year. also happening right now the outested irs chief is in front of a congressional panel.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. you can get a closer look at a new exhibit. these are sculpture's built by an artist. eight of them will be on public display beginning on wednesday and they were built against the backdrop of the golden gate bridge. the bridge is what inspired him. the sculptures will be on display for a year. time now 6:25. in froze low two suspected criminal -- in froze fresno two suspected criminals pocket dialed 911 as they were trying to steal a car. instead of hanging up the 911 dispatcher listened for 35 minutes and found out where they were. yeah the cops showed up. police found several items that

were being taken from that burglarized car and both men were arrested. another big announcement is expected today in what has been a big week for the sacramento kings. the team's owner has reportedly agreed to sell the kings to a group in sacramento. a billionaire is heading up the group that is expected to take over the kings. on wednesday the board of governors killed the previous deal keeping the kings in sacramento. a night at the ballpark turned into a special reunion for a nine-year-old girl and her father. ray lean that adam's father had been stationed in afghanistan for the past two years. last night she had the honors of throwing out the first ph at the tampa bay ray game. after throwing the ball the catcher lifted his mask and that was her dad. that is when she ran toward him and gave him a very big hug. sal how is traffic? >> great story. >> the traffic is doing well,

>> yeah they have been pretty meticulous. that is the suspects car. but they have the mobile crime unit out here and they should be out here for several more hours. what it means is that 580 westbound that onramp is shut down. that is right where 580 meets 238. this was a traffic stop that turned ugly when the driver tried to run away. our news crew was the only one here to arrive shortly after the sheriff's office closed down the onramp last night. that was around 11:15 when sheriffs deputies spotted a buick with stolen honda license plates. they tried to pull it over.

the driver jumped out, took off. he was tacked to the ground by the first deputy. then a passenger in the car jumped in the driver's seat and dragged a second deputy as he tried to drive away. >> he struggled with another deputy. and as he was driving away the deputy was getting drug along with the car. a third deputy fired into the vehicles striking the now driver in the torso. >> reporter: that suspect is taken to eden medical center where he is listed in critical condition. deputies arrested a female passenger she was not hurt. investigators think the three suspects had earlier escaped a high speed chase with dublin police. a deputy who shot at the car is on paid administrative leave. live near castro valley i'm tara moriarty. we have new details about a deadly freeway shooting in oakland. two people were killed last night on interstate 880 while warriors fans were driving home from the nba playoff game.

ktvu claudine wong is live in oakland now. you just got off the , if any, with the police -- just got off the phone with police. >> reporter: we think we have a better idea about what exactly happened last night and over night. we are on the jackson street onramp to interstate 880. at one point they thought this is where the shooting happened. investigators tell me the shooting happened on the freeway itself. they believe one car shot at this white porshe. shooting and killing the two people inside. we also have learned more about the two victims in this case. one of them a man in his 30s. another a man in his 20s. police now tell me that both victims were wearing warriors gear. they don't know if that means they were coming from the warriors game or come from a place where they had been watching the warriors game local by that they believe both are from the bay area. although may not be from oakland itself. now again let's take you through the when this all

happened. it was 10:35 just as that warriors game was letting out. a lot of people on the freeway. multiple shots fired. the driver was found dead inside the white porshe he was driving. the passenger got out. it's unclear if he was hit by a car or he died on his injuries on the freeway. but he was found outside the vehicle. overnight they have been going through all the evidence. they had this area shut down for several hours and now they have to go through the long list of witnesses. several people did pull over. they were hoping someone on the freeway at the time and again it was pretty busy at that time of night because of the game saw something or heard something that can piece this together. oakland police handling the homicide. this is a joint investigation. it's been a long night. we know the victim's family has not yet been notified. we know the witness interview are just about to get started. very early in this investigation but this all new information coming in about the

victim's where they possibly were coming from. and we'll continue touchiest all of this down for -- and we will continue to chase all of this down for you. live in oakland claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. over night an early morning fire was quickly put out in redwood stay. firefighters -- that truck was parked in the back of a business. no one was inside of the truck when it caught fire and the business was not damaged. firefighters say it's still too early to know the cause. in about a half hour from right now more than 3,000 bay area nurses will walk off the job. they are starting a seven-day strike against sutter health. they are protesting plans to cut their pay and welcome benefits. this is video of a previous walk out. today's action will be the ninth strike in less than two years. it's taking place at two summit

facilities in berkeley. suays tt sit is bringing in replacement workers and that the strike is not expected to effect patient care. you better check your bank account. the police are warning about a very elaborate scheme in walnut creek. look at these pictures. coming up at 6:45 devices found to steal credit card information and the reason some other cities are also on high alert. days after a massive graffiti cleanup in the south bay freeway taggers are already back. janine de la vega is in san jose to show us this problem. boy, it's just amazing how quickly that went back up. >> reporter: yeah, it is. drivers had complained about what this is train trestle looked like above highway 101 for months and months. you know it was covered from end to end with graffiti and this fresh paint up there looks nice but as you can see there is also fresh graffiti there. let's show you what it looked like earlier this week. the city, cal trans, and union

pacific railroad teamed up to clean up this bridge. it took a year to coordinate. technically it isn't the city's responsibility because it's union pacific's property. cal trans actually shut down several lanes of 101 over night for several days to have the graffiti painted over. homeless people say they see taggers risk their lives and climb over barricades to tag. union pacific railroad says fines can go up to $300 fortress passing on their property. apparently that wasn't a deterrent. neither were the gates they put up. union pacific responded to me this morning when i contacted them. i told them about this fresh graffiti. they said they would couldn't to work with this city. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. two lanes of northbound 280 in san jose were closed early

this morning after a gun was found on the freeway. at just about 3:45 people called the chp saying they saw a nissan altima flip over near the race street exit and a man ran away. when police arrived they found the car and a gun but not the driver. they say the car is not stolen, it was towed away. and they have not yet said whether they are still searching for that driver. time now 6:37. sal, what is happening in the south bay? >> we are looking at it to make sure we don't want -- make sure we know where the slow traffic is. right now there is not a low traffic in san jose. in fact, it looks pretty good and sunny driving through san jose downtown area on 280. 10 is was a little busy earlier. we had an accident on northbound 880 past 101. that is gone. 580 driving to castro valley looks good. castro valley freeway looks good. remember the onramp to 238 and 580 is closed for police activity. then we are looking at the peninsula the traffic here is

missing after a dozen tornadoes hit north texas wednesday. one of the hardest hit areas right there grand berry. six people died. the sheriff is hopeful those missing people will be found alive. most of the residents have not been allowed to go back home. they say they are eager to see what if anything they have left. today in southern california firefighters are trying to get control of a wild fire burning down there. so far 3800 have have burned. cooler temperatures and lighter winds yesterday helped the crews to get more control of the flames. firefighters say it has spread very quickly because of all the dry brush angarias. a nearby high school and a state park were evacuated as a precaution. the power ball is $550 million. no one had all six numbers but that doesn't mean there is no

with him. that deputy is listed in critical condition. happening right now in washington, d.c.. that man right there the head of the irs is testifying before congressional panel. explaning what he knew about the irs targeting conservative groups. again these are live pictures. this is steven miller here. in a prepared statement he said while the irs made mistakes, they were caused by a desire to efficiently handle a growing number of applications for tax exempt status and not caused by political viewpoints. cell phone video given to us here at ktvu news shows five people being arrested inside a san francisco state dorm. but it's raising questions about whether officers went too far. ktvu brian flores is there with the video and the two very different stories we are hearing from police and the people involved. >> reporter: it is raising questions, pam, good morning. the five people that were

detained and later arrested were redeemed as trespassers while the person who shot the video says they are not. now this is video recorded by person who says thher friend only identified by carlos being detained by campus police. she says her and four others were invited to the dorms by friends. it was peaceful not at all a protest. they were also clips in the video of officers using a flashlight to hit one of the people in the ribs. here's what of what natasha says. >> these officers were here prior to the whole situation just watching us. we don't know why they were watching us. we do not know why our friends were detained. they did not read us our rights.

>> reporter: now natasha says after her friends were taken away she pulled the firearm to alert people of what happened. the campus was evacuated and students returned a short time later. what do campus police have to say about this? >> the group of five were deemed as trespassers. they were not allowed to go inside the dorms. there was also an officer injured in the scuffle. right now we don't know his condition. lots of questions remain including who called police in the first place. we have calls to police ourselves. we hope have an update comings up on mornings on 2. we are live here from san francisco state i'm brian flores. people in walnut creek are being warned to check their bank accounts following a scam targeting credit card users. skimmers were found at two gas stations this week. one was discovered at the

chevron station in north main street. the other at a va lair hoe station in north broadway. both devices were inside the gas pump. making it impossible for customers to see. >> they'll have your card number and the information you used to make a purchase. and they can duplicate it. >> now one of the skimmers was only discovered hours after it was installed. the thieves likely didn't have any time to retrieve any data. police are alerting other cities to be on the lookout. later today we may find out the team from italy will drop out of the america's cup yacht race. here's a photo of the luna rosa team competing last month in naples. the team's owner will arrive in san francisco this morning. he will talk about the fatal accident that killed british olympian andrew simpson.
