from news chopper 2 over a scene in south san jose. what you are looking at here is police swarming a house where a grenade has been found. this neighborhood has been evacuated. we don't know the circumstances involving how the grenade was found, but we can tell you this is going on on clover crest drive. again, in south san jose. we do not know if this is a live grenade. but the bomb squad is on the scene, trying to figure out ing we are working to get more information as we do, we will bring it to you. the head line at the hour, a grenade found inside of a home in south san jose. people have been evacuated as a result. we will have more information later in the newscast. >> police are trying to find out who is behind a fatal shooting on 880 after the warriors game ended. live in oakland with why they are looking for a passing driver that had nothing to do with the gunfire. >> reporter: that's right. police tell me that today they started collecting more

surveillance video from the coliseum and from surrounding buildings that they hope might shed light on the case. two fans dressed in bar o'ers gear driving a white porsche were hit with bullets after the game ended. oakland police say they don't know why the two men, both in their 20s, were targeted after they left the game. but around 10:30, 911 calls started pouring in. >> according to witness descriptions, a dark colored suv rolls up alongside the vehicle. >> reporter: the driver shot in the head and then crashed into the median. his passenger shot several times ended up on the road where he was run over by a car that did not stop. so the coroner will have to decide what the cause of death was, whether it was a gunshot wound or passing motorists. >> reporter: police want to talk to the motorists and

others that may know what led up to the shooting. >> we don't know if it's road rage or something related to something outside. >> reporter: we learned that the porsche is registered to a contra costa county individual. he won't be releasing the names until the families are notified of their deaths. what happened on the freeway last night helps focus a first of its kind discussion today in oakland. i went to the meeting and tonight at 6:00, we will have details on the new strategy to deal with gun violence in the east bay. patty lee, channel 2 news. >> two officers disciplined in connection with the deadliest day in oakland police department history are getting their punishments reversed. the two officers were in command during a 2009 swat operation that tracked down a paroley who had earlier shot two officers to death. two swat officers were also killed during the operation. an arbitrator found that department leaders had unfairly

singled out the two and failed to consider their own accountability. both had been demoted two ranks. their ranks will be restored and they will receive back pay lost because of the demotions. >> the annual race is this sunday. tonight we're learning more about the tight security in place. david stevenson tells us who will be standing by, ready to to move in if there are major problems. david. >> reporter: frank, fences are still going up at the finish line. one thing is already in place as you see there, surveillance cameras, beefed up security in wake of the boston marathon bombings. >> bombings. >> people are lined up to pick not their packet for race day. it has their timing tag and race day information. >> reporter: and warnings about what won't be tolerated at this year's race in the wake of the boston marathon bombings. >> if you're not registered, we will ask you to leave the course. at the coral entry, if they

have a backpack that exceeds the size that we have recommended, then we would ask them to stow it in their vehicle and pick it back up at the end of the course. >> reporter: homeland security director declined to talk to us about the race. she was in town for an immigration conference next door to the registration building. but in addition to security cameras and a 20% bigger police presence this year, the race will have atf and fbi agents standing by to step in if there's major trouble along the 7.64 mile course. >> walking over here, i was thinking about the race a little bit. you know, what happened in boston. >> reporter: participants told us that the boston bombings are on their minds but won't interfere with the result to run. >> i'm not worried about that. i don't live my life that way. i got the good lord protecting me. i'll be okay wherever i go. >> reporter: 30,000 registered runners are expected sunday with another 70,000 people

cheering them on. coming up at 6:00, one company that is benefiting from the race. david stevenson, channel 2 news. >> we put together a map to show you the streets that will be closed due to the race. there are a lot of them. if you park on one of those streets, there is a have good chance that your car will get towed. many of the votes will be shut down as of tomorrow night before the race. we put the entire list, along with the time that each street will be closing on ktvu.com. you can find it in the hot topics section. san francisco police are still searching for answers in a one-year-old cold case murder mystery linked to the race. 30-year-old steven martin of santa clara was attacked in golden gate park after the race and suffered a critical brain injury. he ended up dying two weeks later. martin's friends have set up a facebook page in his name asking people who attended last year's race and the party in

the park afterwards for photos or videos from the incident. police have no suspects so far. >> who is he and how did he die? police are trying to solve the mystery surrounding a body found today. the body was discovered this morning near an apartment complex on hudson court. police have not released any information about the man's race or age. they said this information they would question people in the neighborhood. they're not saying if the discovery is connected to reports of gunshots in the neighborhood this morning. now a man is in the hospital in critical condition. it all happened in minutes. deputies spotted a buick with stolen license plates. they stopped the car on the transition ramp. the driver ran, but they caught him. investigators say a passenger in the back seat jumped up into the front seat and tried to drive away. >> at that point, the deputies started to struggle with the driver who was also moving the car down the roadway. and a third deputy fired,

striking the driver who was taken to the medical center. >> a woman in the car was also held for questioning. the investigation stopped traffic on the ramp for several hours. >> this doesn't happen very often. a man arrested on drunk driving charges not once but twice in one day. the highway patrol says 71-year- old gary was seen driving erratically early yesterday morning. he was arrested and booked into the county jail at about 3:00 a.m. then at about 2:45 that afternoon, police received a report of a drunk driver on highway 37. they located the car and once again arrested gary for a second time. union members this morning began a 7-day strike at five east bay hospitals affiliateedwith sutter health systems. it involves three facilities in berkeley and oakland. the nurses say they're upset over issues involving wages, benefits and patient care.

this is their ninth strike against those east bay hospitals in the past two years. >> we still have facing over 65 take-aways. very extreme take-aways that affect sick leave, compensation benefits, our ability to take care of the patients properly and advocate for them. >> officials say they have offered a package that they consider fair and competitive. the hospitals have now hired replacement workers to fill in until the strike is over. the five largest university of california medical centers including the one in san francisco have begun canceling elective surgical procedures in anticipation of a strike threatened for next tuesday and wednesday. the other ucment hoes are in sacramento, l.a., irvine and san diego. nursing assistants and technicians plan to walk off their jobs. they're upset over a lack of progress in negotiations involving staffing levels, pensions and benefits. >> next wednesday, california students will mark harvey milk

day. hernandez live in the city with why a sacramento based group on why it's a lesson that students shouldn't learn. >> reporter: the group opposed to the day have initiated a campaign to keep children home in order to keep them safe, in their words. tonight we're live in san francisco in front of a school named after milk. the story has two sides to it. radio ads began airing tuesday depicting milk as a sex you'll predator putting kids at risk. it's a group describing itself as a pro family leader standing strong for moral virtues. their ads urge parents to keep their kids home away from activities tied to harvey milk day next wednesday. he is a well known supervisor and gay leader assassinated at city hall back in 1978. >> curriculum teaches young

children that homosexuality, bi sexualitis for them. >> reporter: we reviewed lesson plans, one aimed at fourth and fifth graders not about sexual orientation but prejudice, standing up what they believe in and knowing three things about milk's lives. >> we are teaching students to accept others for their differences and not being judgmental about that. we teach civil rights through that. >> reporter: the principal says it's sad that others oppose tolerance. >> it's learning at an early age that it's okay to be different. it's awesome to be different. >> california schools should get rid of these days in order

to teach children academics. >> reporter: the ads will continue to run in sacramento and los angeles until next week. reporting in live in san francisco, channel 2 news. >> authorities in texas say all of the missing have now been accounted for after a series of tornadoes hit fort worth wednesday night. the death toll remains at six but the number of tornadoes has been increased to 16. the sheriff's department provided this video of the area. tornadoes injured at least a hundred people and destroyed 110 homes. many people remain in shelters. >> investigators are looking to confirm the cause of the deadly limo fire on the bridge this month. officials say it could take another week and a half before they release their report. the fire on may 4th killed five women and injured four others. the victims were on their way to a bridal party when the limo

never happened before. robert. >> reporter: yes. the time trials ended here at the top of metcalf road. people are heading out. as for the riders, they will go down a lot faster than they came up. the san jose stage tour of california features a grueling 10.6% grade to the top of metcalf road in the santa clara county hills. it caps off the 19.6 mile time trial. for the thousands of people that gathered for the start, relating to the ex hill race and exhaust is part of the appeal. >> i know what the suffering is about. i know what the compensation is about. i love it. >> reporter: another appeal, women and men rode the same course. >> it gives us exposure. i think women's cycling, it's less than a sport to a lot of people than the men's. >> reporter: one of the tours

robert honda, ktvu channel 2 news. >> it's official the sacramento kings are staying in sacramento. the mayor said that a local group has bought a controlling interest in that nba team. for a time it appeared another group was going to buy the kings and move them to seattle. >> this was one heck of a come back. it was the longest of long shots. and we as a community rose up and did what nobody, nobody except for the folks in this town and region thought we could do. again, let's give sacramento a round of applause. >> this is reportedly a $535 million deal. an nba record. the investor group has 35 partners, including several entrepreneurs from silicon valley. california may have billions of dollars more than estimated in the governor's latest revised budget. according to the state's independent budget analyst, california will actually take in an extra 3.2 billion not

reflected in the budget. the analyst says the administration's figures do not reflect the improving economy, including higher l tagains from stock sales. no decision has been made on what to do with the extra money. some lawmakers have said in the past that it is important to them to restore funding to programs that faced major cuts in years past. >> the former own of a party bus company involving the death of a passenger was in court today for arraignment. saint james pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter charges. she was fighting with another passenger who also fell out, but survived. saint james is accused of being negligent in maintaining the buses. he has been held on $100,000 bail and set to return to court next wednesday. the owner of the italian racing team entered in the

america's cup races is calling for changes before the race begins. the safety recommendations made today in light of the deadly accident on the bay last week. >> reporter: rosa is the italian cup team. their ac72 back there in the shadow of the hangar. that has not been out on the waters of the bay but the team is making recommendations for the race. it's been a week since the accident on the bay killed the british racer. there have been a lot of questions since then about whether or not there will be changes made to the boats or whether any teams would eventually drop out. today, the owner of luna rosa made it clear that they are still in the race. he says he was at the america's cup review committee meeting this morning where he says that the committee told them it would make recommendations, but wants no responsibility foreman dating any changes. the history by the way of the

america's cup is that the teams decide on the race rules. and today luna rosa put some recommendations on the table to have better protection for the sailors. for luna rosa, that means their team will be wearing body armor. they have oxygen tanks that will give their say lowers extra minutes under water if they are submerged. the team wants more emergency crews out there on the water in terms of water ambulances and paramedics and even a helicopter if one is needed. he also made it clear that they think that the wind limits for the america's cup race should be shifted down. to what, they don't know. because, again, this ac72 for the italian team has not been out on the water yet. they still need to feel the limits out. they say the wind speeds should be shifted down to start the race. if the winds change at any point during the race, they feel that the race should be delayed or called. so these are all things that other teams are going to have

coverage continues. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. >> back off. >> police arrest six people were trespassers or invited guests, depending who you ask. police arrested a group staying in a dorm room after being forced out of a church this week. live in the city with the action taken by students this afternoon. rob. >> reporter: here at san francisco state, students are getting ready for the weekend. many still talking about the video that was shot last night inside a dorm room. dozens of students al reed on cal campus to draw attention to overreaction by police, they say. some that was caught on video. this is cell phone video taken inside of a dormitory. it shows police arresting what the university says were

trespassers. police were called there because of a report of public drunkenness. in all they arrested six people fortress passing, resisting arrest and other charges. one student says they were not trespassers but guests invited into the room. >> i let them stay there until they could figure out what to do. >> reporter: they had been part of a group removed from a church two days ago. >> they were my guests. we're allowed to have guests here. it's not wrong at all. they're people. just because they're homeless doesn't mean they're not allowed. >> reporter: she was among those living in the church and visiting the dorm last night. she is the one that took the cell phone video. >> i was distraught of the whole situation. >> reporter: she also says that she pulled the fire alarm last night that caused the dorm to be cleared out for hours. >> they start today evacuate everybody out. not giving much information. >> we weren't doing anything wrong in our roomed. >> rooms.

>> reporter: the university says that the student that invited the guests violated the rules and could face discipline. reporting live at sf state, channel 2 news. >> the demand for a community college education is sky rocketed among california's growing latino population. now the state's overcrowded campuses are running out of room. the number of latinos seeking vocational and career education will grow by more than 28% over the next ten years. the study finds that many students will not be able to attend community college due to forecasted budget cuts. oakland's new interim police chief took his get to know the community campaign to an elementary school today. that's chief shawn handing out stickers to the students.

he sat down with, teachers parents and students to answer questions. one girl asked if the chief had faith that oakland can change. >> absolutely. this city has great potential. and i -- i have been out all this week meeting with people in the community. and i get a real sense that people want change. >> several people expressed concern about crime, especially violence and graffiti caused by gangs. >> a young woman is accused of taking money from a man's life savings. prosecutors say that mitchell tricked an 85-year-old man into marrying her and giving her $350,000. mitchell allegedly met the victim in line at the grocery store. investigators told him that she was an interior decorator and

it when i see it. a lot of people -- a lot of my friends have been out of work foyer long time. >> long -- for a long time. >> the decline in the unemployment rate for california is not only in one region but statewide. >> reporter: but how can the rate drop be real when just over 10,000 new jobs were created last month. >> we have 140,000 californians who have dropped out of the labor market in the past year. >> reporter: several budget cuts and the across the board sequester are reducing federally extended unemployment payments. >> it reduces the limit but it will cut the benefits by 17%. >> reporter: starting monday, the same cuts will be reducing edd phone service to half a business day, 8:00 a.m. to noon. it's also aggravated by a funding formula that takes the federal money away from the state's unemployment efforts as the unemployment rate falls.

it wasn't the infamous san francisco earthquake itself that destroyed so much of the city. it was the subsequent fires, unchecked by broken water mains that roared across the defenseless hills. but when a devastating earthquake destroyed much of japan in 1995, killing some 6400 people, the water mains held steady. >> they didn't break at all, even after moving six to nine feet. >> reporter: the power engineer who happened to be there after the quake and is in charge of bringing the pipes to l.a. >> it acts like a chain. if the ground moves a lot, it will pull one joint and the next one and grab the next joint and pull it. it will keep pulling like a chain. >> reporter: in earthquake prone japan, the pipes have withheld a great deal. >> in the 40 years, major earthquakes over many decades, no damages, not even a leak. >> reporter: l.a. water and power have installed

one thousand feet of pipe so far in a pilot program, shifting the pipes and installing them can cost up to three times as much as the old fashioned pipes used so far. and there is another problem engineers here in the bay area are facing. >> the japanese working metric. >> reporter: david manages the water pipes for san francisco water and power. >> so all of our tools and methods and procedures are usually geared around dealing with our typical pipe sizes and our english units. so we will have to adapt to that. >> reporter: in all, san francisco alone has some 1200 miles of pipes, bringing its water to the city and county. >> we will start looking at those critical pipelines in san francisco where water is going to a hospital or water is going to the financial district or a large neighborhood. >> reporter: the city will start experimenting with the pipe in one to two years. if all goes according to plan, it will replace pipe in s
