south bay who can't afford dental care are here lined up at san jose convention center. get a look at the line this is just one portion. it wraps around this block. at least a couple thousand in line. some of them have been here for que a bit of time. they are waiting for this free clinic going on this weekend put on by the california dental association. some of the people were just saying they have been lined up since yesterday morning. that's what some told us. some say they haven't seen a dentist in years and they often come -- they are coming with serious infections according to the dentists on hand. hundreds of volunteer dentists are giving their time to preform cleanings, fillings, even extractions. they opened at five this morning and i talked to the chair of the event who is a dentist in the south bay about what why there e is such a larg

turn >> weave e opin need. our safety net in california and nationally isn't working. there are people who don't have a place to turn. >> reporter: this free clinic will happen again tomorrow but people who are looking for care will have to line up once again overnight if they want to have a chance. organizers say the truth is that some people may have to be turned away but i'm told those who can't be treated here for free will be given information and directed to a place where they can receive dental care in their community this is a look inside the convention center where you can see they have a triage set up with different stations where people can go to do cleanings, get xrays and extractions. this is the set up and they will be moving through a couple of thousand people here this morning. we are live in san jose.

>> ktvu news has learned there will be more police patrolling the street this is weekend because of fears of revenge violence. two warrior's fans were gunned down in their car leaving the playoff game. they were on interstate 880 when someone in a dark-colored car shot and killed them. the passenger was either ejected or fell from the car and was hit by another vehicle. the investigators are checking surveillance in their search. a close friend, spoke to us by phone. >> they just called me that day. they were like fly out, come to the game. i was like i have to go to the studio to record. i thought maybe if i was there i would have been in the car with them.

>> a 20,000-dollare being offered. offered. and check out these incredible pictures of an overnight car fire in oakland. we were on scene before the first firefighters arrived. this happened around 11:30 last night when flames engulfed that car. that is near a rec center. nobody was hurt and while investigators aren't calling arson they say the cause of that fire was not mechanical. >> investigators are looking in to what caused two trains in connecticut to crash injuring 70. the governor and two senators are meeting with the ntsb at the crash site. three people are in critical condition after one of the trains derailed hitting the second train. about 700 people were on both trains. >> all of the sudden we just hear boom and then we saw like

smoke everywhere. i just was focusing on my kids. >> reporter: the trains are part of the metro north railroad serving the northern suburbs of new york. amtrak uses the same rails. it has suspended service between new york and boston because of that crash. early this morning the landing gear failed for a united states airways plane in new jerseyt. had to land on its belly. everybody on board escaped injury president the plane flew from philadelphia late last night after several failed attempts of trying to get the gear down the pilot decided to land on its belly. organizers of the amjen tour believe the race will be won or loss today. stage seven will start at 11:30 and end on the summit of mount diablo. we will provide live coverage

how we are looking weather wise. >> going to be warming up. going to have plenty of sun. this morning already seeing sun in most cases, little bit of a patchy fog and low clouds along the coast. we have a jet inside the bayw. he are seeing sun where we had clouds just yesterday. it's a sign the change that are coming our way. you will feel it into the afternoon. what a beautiful golden hue over the bay this morning. we are looking at temperatures in the 40s to low 50s in some cases. it's a cool start out there and in some areas cooler than where we were 24 hours ago. part of that is because of clearer skies, 41 in nevado. if you look closely you can see the shade of gray along the coast just inside the bay over haywood. 54 degrees for you, 54 oakland, 50 in san jose. we are going to see a nice rebound in to the afternoon. temperatures again several degrees above yesterday's highs, especially inland.

along the coast we are going to continue with the sea breeze and it'll stay cool at the coast for today. the sea breeze in fairfield, on stretching through the delta. ten in oakland, calm conditions in mountain view and a light breeze in san jose from the southeast. the winds are going to turn. we will see a northerly wind into sunday and monday. that dry north wind will bring in the possibility of a little bit of fire, high fire concern. i want to show you a view the pacific satellite. you can see the ridge. that's going to be building in over california over the next couple days. that will bring a rise in temperatures. it's the system that's not bringing us rain but eventually digging down, just east of us. the two combine. the ridge of high pressure and the trough that's expected to move in. we will kick up the dry winds and see a high fire danger sunday into monday.

. thousands of dollars stolen from customers of an oakland bank. all bay a woman most say they considered a friend. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> an east bay banker is in jail accused of ripping off more than $1.3 million from her loyal customers. the 6 it-year-old linda foss was a long time bank branch manager. she forged checks and laundered money from multiple accounts. the da said she targeted seniors who she was great friends with. one said his 83-year-old mother treated her like a daughter until she realized she was missing hundreds of thousands of dollars. >> took my mom out to lunch and dinner several times and that is -- now looking back that's the sick part because she was basically preying on her. >> in one case according to investigators a cd totaling $97

the california dental association. hundreds come down and volunteer their time here. they do cleanings and fillings, they preform extractions, and there are some surgeries that take place as well. the doors open at 5:00 this morning and some people have been camped out, outside since yesterday morning. the line this morning still stretches around the block. many people say they just can't afford dental insurance. some have lost their jobs, organizers say there have so many in need because the state cut it's dentacal program. that left three million low income people without dental coverage. >> we have some people that are in need. our safety net in california is and maybe nationally that isn't working. people just don't have a place to turn for the dental needs. >> reporter: organizes say the goal is to treat about 2,000 people throughout the weekend. everything continues tomorrow but i am told that there could be more people than that waiting in line.

smugglers are expanding their business to kentucky fried chicken. those with kfc cravings can't just hop over the border so instead palestine smugglers are sneaking through a series of tunnels. it takes several hours for the food to arrive and costs about $30 a bucket but people say the price is worth it. >> >> there is a new gun control law in california. it requires every new semi automatic gun to be stamped a serial number so people can trace casings found at crime scenes. the law was signed back in 2007 but the technology needed to pass patenting hurdles and it just did. the new law will take effect immediately. the nra has threatened to sue the state. police officers in southern california shot and killed a man who came in to the police department with a knife.

it happened yesterday. police say he was waving the knife and carrying a backpack. they say they asked him if he needed help or needed to see someone but he didn't respond and that's when three officers opened fire. the suspect died at the scene. that shooting is being investigated. a man has been arrested for firing blanks at the canned film festival. >> you can see people running for cover. this happened during a live television interview with a actor. police say that the man fired two shots from the starter pistol and had a fake grenade. that incident happened the day after jewels worth about a million dollars were stolen from a hotel room. the room belonged to an employee of a swiss based jeweler. police believe an organized crime ring could be to blame and could have been helped by

the hotel staff. >> police are trying to find how a grenade got into the garage of a home. a woman foundt. the bomb squad was called out and they detonated that grenade. nearby homes were evacuated. police are investigating, trying to find where it came from. extra security is in effect for today's graduation ceremony at the university of texas. police say because of the boston marathon bombings they are adding dog units and bag checks, bags bigger than 12- inches will not be allowed and parking is prohibited anywhere near the ceremony. some say the additional security makes them uncomfortable. others are grateful and say these days it just seems necessary. berkeley will be filled with plenty of excited students and proud parents today. the university will hold its campus wide ceremony. more than 21,000 tickets have been issued for the ceremony at the newly renovated memorial co

foot nine, 39 pounds and mixed race. the boys father john lee may have taken the child without permission since the grandparents have court ordered custody. john maybe driving a blue older model bmw and is known to frequent several hayward hotels. anyone with information is asked to call police. happening now, hundreds of volunteers are giving more than a thousand patients free dental care in san jose. ktvu's alex savage is live at the convention center which has been turned into a large scale dentist office. alex? >> reporter: yeah, it is quite an undertaking here. they basically have taken this giant tent here, at the san jose convention center and turned it into one large free dental clinic. you can see they have varioustations where all sorts of work is being done. they are doing x-rays, surgery, extractions, fillings as well. a lot of people here are in desperate need of dental care. a lot of people are telling me they haven't seen a dentist in years. all this work is being done today for free.

here is the san jose convention center. this clinic is put on by the california dental association. hundreds of dentists come in and they donate their time to do these cleanings and fillings and extractions and oral surgeries. they are even making people dentures in some cases. the doors opened at 5:00 this morning but some people were camped out since yesterday morning and this line still stretches around the block right now. many people say they can't afford dental insurance because they've lost their jobs. i talked to one man waiting in this line who was laid off three years ago and lost his coverage. >> i've got a missing tooth here, here, and here. i used to have a regular dentist to take care of my dental work all the time but its been rough. >> now organizers say thererwas such a huge demand this weekend because the state recently cut its dentacal program which is similar to medical, and that left 3 million low income people without dental coverage. the goal this weekend and this

event does continue tomorrow is to help about 2000 people with dental coverage but i am told by organizers that given the size of the line outside it is possible that some people could be turned away this weekend. live this morning in san jose, ktvu channel 2 news. ktvu learned there will be more police officers patrolling the streets of richmond this weekend because of fears of a violent retaliation. two warrior fans seen on the right in this picture, 28 year old terrence marks of richmond on the left are shot and killed while in their white porsche on thursday night. they had just left the warriors playoff game at oracle arena. the two were on northbound 880 near broadway in oakland when witnesses say someone in a dark colored suv pulled up and opened fire. chp says marks who was the passenger was either ejected or fell from the car and was then hit by another vehicle. the shooting shut down a section of the interstate for hours. investigators are now checking

surveice search for the gunman. one of his closest friends a rapper known as ap9 spoke to us by phone from las vegas. >> he just called me that day and was like fly out, come to the warriors game and i was like well i have to go to the studio to record so i couldn't make it. if i was there i would have been in the car with him. go he leaves behind a young son. a $20,000 reward is being offered in the case. check out these pictures of an overnight car fire in east oakland. one of our protographers was on scene even before the first firefighters arrived. this happened around 11:30 last night. flamed engulfed the dodge caravan and nobody was injured but while investigators aren't calling it arson just yet they do tell us the cause of the fire was not mechanical. we've just received new details about the crash of two commuter trains in connecticut that injured 70 people. within the past hour, the national transportation safety board said its investigation 10

days. they hope to move the damaged train cars off the track within a day and a half. three people are in critical condition after one of the trains derailed hitting the second train last night. passengers described this frightening scene. >> all of a sudden we just hear boom! and then we saw like smoke everywhere and i was just focusing on my two kids just hugging them and bracing them. >> investigators say they are looking at how the trains break the conditions of their wheels. information will be gathered from data recorders on the train. similar to the black box we see on trains. commuter service between new york and boston has been suspended because of the crash. organizers of the amgen tour of california say they believe the bike race will be won or lost during todays climb up mount diablo. stage 7 will start at 11:30 this morning and end on the mountains summit around 3:00. stage 8 begins tomorrow at marina green in san francisco. we'll provide live coverage of

the start of stage 8 right here on mornings on 2 tomorrow. the state will end in santa rosa. cycling fans gathered at bailey road in san jose yesterday to watch the riders test themselves in time trials. tj vanguarderen won stage 6 and as the race leader the 24 year old is from montana. and as you may have already heard there was another big event in san francisco tomorrow the bay to breakers. 30,000 runners are expected to take part and another 70,000 could show up just to cheer them on. in the wake of the boston marathon bombings there are several new security measures in place at the race this year. we talked live with san francisco police chief earlier this morning on mornings on 2. he says surveillance cameras are set up along the course, along with see through trash cans, large backpacks are also ban and everyone has to be registered. >> we want everybody to start at the start because that's where all the checkpoints are going to be and certainly if you can run and have a good time don't run the risk of being asked off the course.

forecast for our bay area community. well this morning people from a north texas neighborhood hit hardest by a series of tornadoes will be able to return home to see what if anything they have left. you're looking at video of the damage left behind in the city of grandbury. the national weather service says 16 tornadoes ripped through that area. one woman huddled in a bathtub with her family listening to everything around them get torn away. >> i had my eyes closed, we were all praying, it was awful. it was the most scary feeling, i was worried about my kids. >> at least six people died and several others are still missing. governor rick perry is assuring people they are going to get all the help they need from local and federal governments. a powerful storm is being blamed for injuring at least one person in northern alabama. yesterdays weather system knocked down trees, flip ped dumpsters and damaged several hopes and businesses.

one woman was hurt as she ran for cover . the national weather service says that storm is moving north toward tennessee. new this morning north korea reportedly fired three t range guided missinto the water off its east coast, north korea routinely tests such rockets but todays launch comes during a period of tentative diplomacy. south korea says the north fired two missles this morning, a third in the afternoon but government officials say the intent of the operation remains unclear. police in britain say they have a new lead in the case surrounding the disappearance of madeline mccann. she was four years old when she disappeared in 2007 from her families vacation home in portugal. police after a review of the case they have come up with a list of new possible suspects who they plan to question in connection with her disappearance. police had originally focused their investigation on her parents but they were cleared in july of 2008. in this mornings weekly address president obama listed three areas that must be improved to build a thriving

middle class. >> one making america a magnet for good jobs. two, making sure our workers have the education and skills they need to do those jobs and three, making sure your hard work leads to a decent living. >> the president says american businesses have created more than 6.5 million new jobs and while he's encouraged he's still looking for ways to increase middle class wages. president obama also indicated the need for more legislation making it easier for families to refinance home mortgages and take advantage of those historically low rates. the president is coming back to the bay area next month for a couple of fundraisers, on june 6 he is scheduled to appear at a reception in palo alto and a dinner, a venture capitalist a co-founder for sun microsystems. the dinner cost $65,000 a couple. it includes a meal and a photo with the president. the money is going to go to the democratic senate campaign committee. california's unemployment rate dropped to its lowest

level in four and a half years. new numbers released by the labor department shows the states unemployment rate fell to 9% last month. the labor department says nearly 75 7,000 jobs have been added since the recovery began in february of 2010; however, nearly 1.7 million californiaans still remain unemployed. here in the bay area, all nine counties reported unemployment rates considerably lower than the state average. they range from a high of 8.1% in salanox county to a low of 4.6% in marin county. the sequester cuts from the federal government are having an impact on the employment development department, starting monday customer service will be reduced. edd phones will only be staffed from 8:00-noon instead of until the close of business at 5. during the afternoon hours, staff members will now focus on other things such as processing applications for unemployment benefits. the only way we lose is to

give up this contract. >> it is day two of the week long nurses strike at eastbay center hospitals. the nurses say contract issues include patient care, benefits and wages. this is the ninth time they have walked off the job in the past two years. strikes are happening at three facilities in berkeley and oakland at eden hospital in castro valley and sutter delta. the hospitals hired replacement nurses and they say the strike will not affect patient care. one expert says the state budget outlook is a lot better than governor brown makes it out to be. about 3 billion types better, an independent budget an a cyst says our state will take in $3.2 billion more than the governor has estimated and now that extra money is expected to trigger a new debate among lawmakers about just how to spend it. meanwhile the governor is defending his proposal to shift education spending to the states needy children. with a proposed increase in school funding this year brown wants to target new dollars and districts with low income students and foster children.

some people are against the governors plan and say the money could be put to better use elsewhere. the tea party is sueing the irs. the civil suit is expected to be filed next week. it represents more than a dozen tea party groups who claim they were targeted by the irs or had their tax exempt status severely delayed or denied. just yesterday congress grilled the outgoing irs commissioner who testified that mistakes were made. he denied any political agenda but admitted corners were cut in an effort to reduce work loads. lawmakers promise more hearings accusing the agency of becoming too large and intrusive. well, it's an aggressive campaign to get workers to move from silicon valley to canada. we're going to tell you what the countries offering that it says we don't have. a fantastic forecast for your weekend. temperatures warming by several degrees over yesterdays highs, i'll have a look at what you can expect coming up.

while police and port officials complete the investigation. a man is in the hospital following a 45 minute standoff and gun battle with newark police. it all began on mcdonald avenue shortly before 6:00 last night. neighbors say the man had been firing shots in the neighborhood before barricading himself in his house. after 45 minutes of trying to convince the man to come on out, they decided to go in and they say they were shot out by the suspect. police say they returned fire hitting the man once. he was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. and a demotion has been overturned for a pair of oakland police officer whose headed up a boxed swat operation. in 2009 then captain richard roseco commanded an operation to track a paroleee who gunned down two officers. two swat officers were later killed in the manhunt but now an arbitrator ruled that the oakland police department unfarly singled out them and failed to consider their own accountability. both men were demoted two ranks, their ranks will be ckng

out, so as you see, the curious young bear seems to debate whether to try and eat it. that's a scary shot. the camera captures those close ups of the bears teeth, mouth and throat and the camera wasn't damaged. >> better the camera than brad joseph. >> [laughter] firefighters in southern california continue to battle tough terrain and large flames as they fight to put out two wildfires. they are burning about 30 miles apart on i-5 near the grapevine. one of the fires which is burning has spread to nearly 600-acres. it threatened an elementary school and dozens of homes when it broke out yesterday. the other fires within burning since wednesday in frazer park. that fire has burned more than 4300-acres and is currently 70% contained. high winds continue toly a big role in that fight. meanwhile firefighters in the bay area especially in nappa county are bracing for a busy fire season. cal fire says lack of rain this past winter season is to blame. since the beginning of the year cal fire responded more than 1300 grass and wildfires which

is 300 more compared to the same time last year. people living in nappa county are being told to create defensible space around their homes in order to reduce the risk of fires. happening now, dentists are giving life changing smiles to hundreds of patients. ktvu channel 2 is live in san jose with the free dental clinic that had people lined up and down those streets hours and really yesterday, day in advance. hi, alex. >> reporter: good morning, yeah, a huge turn out here down in san jose. i'll tell you this is really an important event for people who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford to see a dentist. today, they are having all sorts of dental work done for free. it's all going on here behind us and what you're looking at here is the dental triage area and that's where folks when they first come in they have an initial exam done to figure out what sort of work they immediate to have done. this clinic is being put on by the california dental association. they are doing all this dental work for free here at the san

jose convention center this morning. some people here haven't seen a dentist in years they tell me. they are showing up with inspections, many of them have teeth that needs to be pulled. hundreds of dentists donate their time and they do cleanings and fillings, they also perform extractions and do oral surgery. they even are making some people dentures as well. the doors opened 5:00 this morning and some people had been camped out since yesterday morning. the line is still going all around the block right now. many people say they have no other options to get their teeth cared for. >> i can't afford dental insurance. it costs us $200 just to have a tooth pulled. i'm on unemployment. there's no way i can pay for that so when they said free, i'm here. and they should offer more programs like this seriously. >> organizers believe the demand is is great at this free clinic in part because the state cut its dentacal program in 2009 similar to medical, and

that left roughly 3 million low income adults without dental coverage. as we bring you back out here live this clinic will continue thomas well. the goal is all told to treat about 2000 or so people but it is possible there are a lot more people than that waiting in line and it is also possible that not everyone will be able to see a dentist this weekend. live this morning in san jose, ktvu channel 2 news. california will become the first state to offer voter registration through its health insurance marketplace later this year. millions of californiaans will get the chance to register at the same time they're buying insurance under the federal affordable care act. open enrollment begins in october. a 1993 federal law requires states to designate agencies and offices that provide public assistance or disability services as voter registration agencies. san francisco is considering requiring disabled drivers to feed parking meters. a panel proposes expanding and metering current blue disabled parking zones. supporters of the idea say it would cut down on abuse and

free up more parking spaces for the needy. up to one in four parking spaces are occupied by cars with disabled stickers, however changes would need first state approval. well there's controversial new gun control law taking effect in california. every new semiautomatic gun to be stamped with the serial number to that police can trace casings found at crime scene. the law was signed by then governor arnold schwarzenegger in 2009 but the micro stamping teb follow o gay just passed all the patenting hurdles.takes immediately. the national rifle association threatened to sue. dozens of colorado sheriffs came together announce a lawsuit in their state. this is in the aftermath of last years deadly movie shooting in colorado. the new laws expand background checks. sheriff says officials were too hasty when it came to the legislation and are calling it unconstitutional. in about 10 minutes the final public meeting will take

place regarding plans to cut down 85,000 trees in the eastbay hills. now the trees are in clairmont and strawberry canyon in berkeley and oakland. the city of oakland, university of california and eastbay regional parks are trying to secure millions of federal dollars to clear cut fire prone species and pore herbicide on the stumps. the 1991 eastbay hill fire storm prompted this project. 25 people were killed and thousands of homes destroyed. supporters are hoping to mitigate fire danger but opponents disagree with what they call a destructive approach. >> the hills are right for a fire storm and the pine trees are a major contributing factor. >> what amounts to a strong personal viewpoint on what foliagex should or shouldn't be in this area is in our view a terrible misuse of public funds. >> fema has not yet decided whether to fund the project. the last public meeting on the project is about to get under way at the clairmont middle

school in oakland and then the public has until june 17th to submit written comments. most campgrounds in tahoe will be open just in time for the long memorial day weekend. the national forest service made that announcement yesterday and also says that most hiking and biking trails will be open with only a few patches of snow left over from the winter months. campers are being warned about the high fire danger because of the dry winter. campfire permits are required outside of developed campgrounds and are free and all forest service, blm, and cal fire offices. well watching the san francisco symphony perform at the americas cup pavilion, coming up we'll tell you how you can win a pair of tickets when they perform at the new concertvenue this summer. the weather is shaping up around the bay area, a nice big warm up in store for your weekend. i'll have a look at your numbers coming up. ♪
