sunday, may 19th, i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. we begin with team coverage of beta breakers with crews at the beginning, middle and end of the race. get out to the live pictures. we begin with alex savidge who is over at the start line where security is tight. >> reporter: certainly is. the chief talked about it this morning, added security after what happened in boston but everyone out here just having a good time. a lot of smiles on everyone's faces. here goes the runners, taking off and they just took off, obviously, we saw the start a few minutes ago and this is right -- the start line is at main and howard and obviously everyone is going to be winding their way through the streets of san francisco. the whackiness has begun. you see the costumes, the masks, early on here you see a lot of the elite runners, the folks who are serious about their times here, and then as time moves on, you begin to see stuff like this, this gentleman here in the chicken outfit, or was that a turkey? sort of hard to tell. but i want to talk about sort of the security plan that has

been put in place here by the chief today as these runners move on by us here. they have added quite a few additional security measures in light of what happened in boston. no large backpacks allowed here at the race. there have also been security cameras set up all along the route which of course winds its way from here in the downtown area over to the great highway. there will also be trashcans. they have put in transparent trashcans and taken out the normal trashcans, another layer of security. there will also be bomb squads on site here all along the route and bomb sniffing dogs as well, and a short time ago right before the race was about to get underway, i ran into the police chief greg sir and i talked to him a little bit about some of the added security measures put in place. >> they have been going up and down since 3:00 in the morning. we have been here since before 5:00, we really want to be invisible so that everybody has a blast but we know that people are a bit anxious.

>> reporter: all right. you know, but a lot of the people i talked to this morning, a lot of the runners, they were getting all warmed up and stretching out before the race had begun. i asked them how comfortable do they feel in light of what took place in boston and in light of all of the additional security measures that san francisco police talked about, a lot of people said they feel very comfortable, completely safe, happy to be taking part in this. ran into one gentleman who was telling me he has one in the beta breakers for 45 straight years. that is quite a streak. and obviously today you see a lot of folks in their costumes, the outfits, the hats and 30,000 people filling the streets of san francisco, the whackiness, the zaniness, the costumes, the madness, it is the 102nd annual beta breakers and it is underway here at the start line in downtown san francisco. everyone happy to be out here today. we will be here at the starting line, we will send it back to you, mike and claudine in the

studio. >> thanks, alex. at 5:00 this morning, you're looking at dozens of san francisco police officers who gathered at the center. they were going through a final check list before the race and officers were there including patrol street cops and police chief greg suhr. be vigilant in reporting suspicious activity and patience because of the traffic gridlock around that race course. as alex mentioned there are a few new security measures at this year's beta breakers, surveillance cameras at the start, middle and end of that 12-kilometer course, backpack or bags -- and there are 17 different law enforcement agencies involved in security including the fbi and the sheriff's office, bomb technicians and k-9 units also there for precaution. >> we may see the elite runners

go through the most difficult part of the race. >> reporter: within the last half hour we see people start to show up. i want to show you we are at hays and scott, the backside of the hays hill and there is traffic congestion as police have blocked off scott street. you can see people trying to get around the race course. we have a couple of those san francisco police officers on motorcycles and that's the top of hays hill that you're seeing now. there's where one of the security cameras has been placed that ffpd will be checking throughout the day. here down at the intersection we have a spectator out here on stilts. he's for sure going to have a clear view of today's race, just some of the zaniness that alex mentioned that makes this run so special in san francisco -- and san francisco so special. at the corner of alamo scare we also have the first aid center, the red cross first aid center. i spoke with them shortly ago and they said they will see on a cold year when runners are

more likely to have sprained, they could see anywhere from 450 runners but today beautiful, sunny out, starting to warm up, so they are not expecting to see a whole lot of injuries and again hays hill one of the toughest parts of the race, this is also where i'm told that people kind of start to bow out and celebrate, which is what some of the runners do here. we are going to be looking forward to some of that zaniness. for now send it back to you. >> see you seen -- soon. there will be a lot of street closures in the cities. here's a look at the road closures. golden gate park and -- will be open until 4:00 p.m. tonight. most other roads will open after the race between 10:00 and 11:00. beta breakers not the only big race in san francisco. spikeless and amgen tour take off in half an hour. crosses the golden gate bridge, the cyclists will ceup to

-- the race will end in santa rosa. aeg is running both the tour and beta breakers and it says the cyclists and runners won't impact each other. security is guaranteed to be heightened after a bomb scare near stage 7 of the tour yesterday in livermore. the alameda county sheriff's office bomb squad used its robert to investigate -- robot to investigate it. they closed several downtown streets just a few hours after the tour raised -- raced through. >> when they told us to come in, that's when -- and lock the door, that's when i knew, okay, something is really going on and finally somebody asked what's going on and they said it was an incident. >> police told outdoor diners to move inside and some businesses were told to close and evacuate. the bomb squad later determined the box was filled with postcards and was not a threat. a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning. we will give you a view

overhead as the cyclists across the landmark. set to be on that bridge at 8:20 this morning and the chp is going to hold traffic for five or 10 minutes while the tour crosses the bridge. another race going on, the alcatraz sharkfest swim happening in the same area as the amgen tour of california at around the same time this morning. the 1 1/2 mile swim from alcatraz begins at cinch 50 on -- 7:50 on the east side of the island. 50 kayakers, lifeguards and support boats will monitor the swim. we are keeping an eye on today's big events and we will have live coverage all throughout the morning. we also have more information on our website at ktvu.com, including detailed information about those street closures for the beta breakers race. time now is 7:08 and certainly beta breakers very colorful. got to apologize, though, live television, some people not in costume. >> never know what's coming by. >> yes, so we will be very careful, as careful as we can this morning but maour toes,

those beta breakers runners. >> quite entertaining, right? >> always. >> we are looking at a fabulous day to be out in, well, perhaps the shorts, no shirt. bring the sun block, the water, you'll be absolutely fine. we've got a nice warm forecast coming our way outside our doors this morning you can see a bit of haze but we are with the mostly sunny skies across the region, including most of the bay, just patches of fog and along the coastline we are looking at partly cloudy skies to mostly clear at half moon bay, santa cruz so we are looking at plenty of sunshine for today. temperatures are up over yesterday, two to 4 degrees in most cases. santa rosa you take the cake with the north breeze already blowing in your neighborhood, 56 degrees, and that dry north freeze will be with us for the afternoon with just a have you weak onshore breeze for today. 54 in oakland, 54 concord, 48 in walnut creek so a mild start again, we are warmer than where we started yesterday morning.

it was a bit of a cool start in some areas yesterday. the winds are light and variable, another indication of that ridge of high pressure now strengthening, coming in from the north at santa rosa, an onshore breeze in fairfield but a light one. temperatures are going to be warm, we will be anywhere from four to 8 degrees warmer than we were yesterday, widespread 70s and 80s around the bay and inland, even 70s expected along the coastline in some cases, that dry north wind really cranking up in the hills, north and east bay hills a little bit later today will last into tomorrow morning and that again is going to elevate our fire danger. we have been talking about that this weekend. the national weather service does not have an advisory in place but somethinto be aware of, right? giving you a look at the forecast for beta breakers, they are already on the run but if you plan on heading out there to maybe be along the sidelines and cheer them on, here is a look at the forecast for today, starting out in the low 50s right now, mostly sunny and 60 degrees at 10:00 and then 67 with mostly sunny skies expected at noon as they head

colorful folks, the costumes and all the crazy folks usually hang out near the back. we are going to keep an eye on the entire race for you. we've got cameras all across the city and chopper 2 is launched so we will keep you updated on mornings on 2. police in oakland are looking for the suspect of a deadly shooting. it happened at about 4:30 this morning in the area of 92nd and east 14th street. police say two people were inside their car when someone pulled up and started shooting through the driver's front door. the man in the driver's seat died at the scene. another person was self- transported to the hospital with unknown injuries. anyone who may have witnessed this shooting is asked to call police. the ladder trucks were up overnight in san francisco. firefighters responded to a fire on venezia near 16th street shortly after 1:30 this morning. the two-alarm fire started at we be sushi and quickly spread to the thai house next store. when firefighters arrived, they say went attack

looking for residents inside the buildings. >> we immediately took a life safety approach on this and made a quick search of the building by getting hose line into the rear to start suppression efforts here. >> crews knocked down the fire in about an hour and so far no injuries reported. the cause of that fire has not been released: the salvation army is asking for help for families displaced by a fire in redwood city. the fire on oak side road happened on wednesday. 26 people are still in temporary housing including twin baby girls and four boys between 5 and 11 years old. the salvation army says some of the fire victims don't even have a change of clothes. if you would like to help, you can find information on our website at ktvu.com under hot topics. there was just one big winner in last night's record powerball jackpot of more than $590 million. one ticket matching all six numbers was sold at a publix supermarket in zephyrhills, florida, according to the

deputy secretary of the florida lottery. the jackpot is the largest in powerball history. it is a few million dollars more than the jackpot shared by winners in arizona and missouri back in november. and someone in san jose came close to that jackpot with five winning numbers last night but they missed the powerball. that winning powerball ticket was sold at the 7-eleven at 2440 expressway. he or she was just one number away but five out of six ain't bad. lottery officials say that winner did win $1.1 million. here are the winning numbers from last night's drawing, 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and your powerball number is 11. if you did not win, don't let it get you down. the odds were definitely against you. members of occupy the farm have retain a plot of land in albany owned by uc berkeley. >> the multi-use property zoned by the regents of the university of california and is not open to the public. >> couple dozen people ignored

warning from police and returned to the field and planted broccoli and kale seeds. last week they put in plants which the school then plowed under. so far police have not moved in this time but are documenting the protesters who are there. >> this is just the newest phase of the battle so, yeah, carry on, right? as they say keep calm and carry on, keep farming and carry on. >> we've gone through the process to have the land developed and to have a market here and i think that's what the majority would like. >> some albany residents angry with occupy the farm held a dueling protest calling it no to occupy. a support developing the land to turn it into senior housing and a grocery store ground breaking expected toward the end of the year. in virginia as many as 60 people have been hurt after a car plowed into a crowd of parade goers. the accident happened yesterday at the hikers parade in damascus. investigators say the elderly man who was driving his cadillac in the parade may have suffered a medical emergency

before crashing. police say both bystanders and law enforcement worked together to help save lives. >> hikers and law enforcement, ems and fire personnel picked up a 1997 cadillac into the air and pulled people that were pinned, trapped underneath this vehicle out to safety. >> the victims suffered injuries that range from critical to superficial. three people did have to be transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital. so far no deaths have been reported. we are getting a look inside the wreckage of friday night's commuter train crash in connecticut. a passenger took these photos of debris and mangled metal. investigators are looking at a broken section of rail. they think it may have caused the derailment and collision. they have ruled out foul play and that wreckage may be removed today. service remains shut down. humboldt county sheriff's officials are scaling back their search for a man suspected of killing his family. deputies say shane miller has been on the run for almost two weeks now. he is accused of killing his

wife and two young daughters in their shasta county home. investigators say they found his car in humboldt county the next day. they have been searching the area since but they say there is no sign of miller. deputies have taken down their search command post but they say they will continue to troll the area for -- patrol the area for the next few days. a new report reveals there were troubles at the home of layla fowler long before killed. the family struggled financially. a stockton record reports leila's father had at least seven children born to at least four different women, five of the children lived with him in cal perris county and child support filings the father barney fowler accused leila's mother of not seeing their children for years. leila was stabbed to death on april 27th. her 12-year-old brother charged with the killing. his next hearing is on may 29th. well a memorial will be held at 8:00 this morning for a veteran longshoreman killed in an accident at the port of oakland. coworkers will gather at the

terminal to eulogize 78-year- old manuel simpson. he died on friday. simpson was in the water for more than half an hour before divers could reach him. port operations resumed last night after work was halted for the investigation and as a show of respect for simpson. the italian team competing in the americas cup decided it will spend the next few days training in the san francisco bay. one of our tower cams caught the crew practicing yesterday morning. the team said weather conditions were ideal for the team to get out on the water. that is despite a safety committee request for teams to suspend training for a week while it reviews procedures after the death of a sailor from the sweden team. according to the mercury news, race organizers said they were disappointed with the italian team's decision to practice anyway. it was a thrilling victory at the tank. what shark fans are saying about last night's critical win at home and why the nhl is not happy with the team's leadership. plus a great morning to be

the 102nd bay to breakers officially underway. welcome back to mornings on 2, everyone. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. we have live team coverage for you of the bay to breakers race. katie yudes is watching the runners on hays street hill but first we want to go over to alex. >> reporter: the crowd start of starting to thin out behind us. we are at howard and main in the downtown san francisco, the financial district here where just a half hour ago the 102nd annual bay to breakers kicked off and now we are seeing the tail end of thecrowd. 30,000 people participating today, running this 7 1/2 mile route that takes us obviously from the bay side of san francisco over to the ocean. and we are obviously seeing some impressive costumes, thank tutus, a couple of piglets, we are seeing zombies, a lot of superheroes as well. i want to mention that security has been a major issue, a major

concern here for this bay to breakers, obviously in light of what took place at the boston marathon, the bombings that took place there and the san francisco police have added extra security, security cameras along the route have been put in place, they have taken out trashcans to make sure that nothing can hide in trashcans and they have also put bomb sniffing dogs and a bomb squad on site today here just to add an extra layer of comfort and security for people taking part. people feel quite comfortable. in fact, you can tell, everyone is excited. everyone has smiles on their faces this morning. it is a whacky, fun time in san francisco and, you know, obviously a lot of people are serious about running the race. some of those folks are -- may be crossing the finish line here within a couple of minutes is what i'm being told but a lot of other people sort of take their time with the bay to breakers. listen to one of the runners we caught up with. >> we are going to run at the beginning and then we will see how far we get. probably towards the hill we will probably start walking. >> reporter: that's how it

usually happens here, you know, you run, you walk, you run some more, you walk a little bit. you know, you get to a point along the route maybe you want to hang out for a little while and party with some of the folks and that's sort of what it turns into. it turns into one long party that stretches across the city of san francisco. but again, want to point out that the real serious folks, the elite runners will be crossing the finish line here within minutes over at the great highway in san francisco. we obviously have crews along the route including there at the finish line so we will have the 102nd annual bay to breakers fully covered for you here but we are at the start line. i said thecrowd is thinning out and then i see a whole nother influx of people heading towards us. so more runners on the way. i don't know where they are coming from but they keep on coming so we will keep an eye on things here at the start line, send it back to you guys in the studio, mike and claudine. >> thanks. it is the nemesis for many bay to breakers runners, the hayes street hill, 250 feet above sea

level. katie is there for us where runners are taking on the challenge. what's happening? >> reporter: the sea of people that have left, alex, they are all right here. it's kind of starting to slow down a little bit. the crowd is getting thick. we have some interesting costumes and also some really pumped runners because they have conquered the hill at this point and i just got knocked in the head. lots of love to the runners out here. thank you for that. you know, it's the beauty of live television, folks. we are trying to not show any nakedness, we are trying not to get smacked by runners because they are doing quite the fete here, out here running this 12k race and they are on the final stretch and we have -- this is my first bay to breakers. we have another first timer. i want to talk to people that are watching the race. this is really a spectator sport as much as it is a run. this is your first time. what are your early impressions? >> it's been awesome. i had no idea what to expect. >> reporter: and you came out, you have seen this before, you knew what you were getting into. >> this is like the spirit of

san francisco. everyone gets to be crazy and dress up and i mean this is san francisco at its finest. it's amazing. >> reporter: it is san francisco at its finest. we have some of the elite runners are most likely crossing the finish line at this point. i'm going to work my way back over here so you can see more of these wild costumes. people out here having a good time. the weather couldn't be better. it is beautiful out here today. for now sending it back to you. we are having a good time here at the bottom of hayes hill. also in san francisco, the last leg of the amgen tour of california. that begins in about 40 minutes and ktvu channel 2 news reporter christian kaplan is covering the race live from the starting line. >> reporter: would you say this is a busy morning in san francisco, bay to breakers, amgen tour of california? the race set to get underway. this is the eighth and final stage of the amgen tour of california set to depart from here, the marina green in san francisco and head north towards santa rosa. in the distance you might be

able to see some of the cyclists getting ready at this hour. that start in just about 45 minutes. yesterday was a dramatic day, net -- leopold carnig took the lead. a lot of folks really into this. you can see them prepping out here right now. we were told that they are just about to put up the starting archway right now. you might be able to see it there. they are inflating that. things here just about to get underway. today's race is going to be a beautiful race, again, going up north towards santa rosa. my colleague rick lee and i will be following this race. we will be leaving here shortly after the cyclists and we will be heading up to santa rosa to get those results for you and show you the scene up there tonight at 5:00 and at 10:00 tonight again we will have more coverage. so you can be sure there's going to be a lot of coverage for the amgen tour of california and all the events going on around san francisco. for now live in san francisco,

>> they blew on by. they are like see you. >> from the chopper shot you can tell it was sunny out there out at ocean beach and rosemary a beautiful day for everyone in the bay area. >> just as amazing as that race going on, we've got great weather, mostly clear skies. temperatures warmer than where we started yesterday, 50s around the region in most cases and that sunshine is going to continue for today as the ridge of high pressure continues in our area, driving our temperatures even warmer than what we felt on saturday. a live look there at the bay bridge. it is a good looking start, chances are it's a good looking morning in your neighborhood as well. so if it is bay to breakers, amgen, alcatraz, again it's a beautiful morning out there. mostly clear. temperatures up a few degrees. in santa rosa notably warmer for you, a northerly breeze in your area and that has driven your temperatures up anywhere from five to 10 degrees over yesterday's numbers at this hour. so definitely warmer in your

area. sunny skies, temperatures will continue to heat up and then tonight we will see a pattern develop that's going to bring heightened fire danger to our hills, north and east bay hills. no advisories in place but it will be tonight through tomorrow morning. so we will be watching that for you. a look at the pacific satellite view and the setup. the ridge of high pressure again strengthening over our area as a trough remains to the east of us. we have one digging in along the great basin and that again tightening that gradient as the high pressure rebuilds it's going to kick up those winds for our hills. most of us probably not even going to fill those -- feel those winds but again in the hills likely above 1000 feet they will be howling into tonight as well as tomorrow. 49 degrees right now in napa, santa rosa, mild one for you, 56. we are looking at 54 in oakland, 56 redwood city, low 60s outside your door in antioch. afternoon highs for today, several degrees above yesterday, 88 for santa rosa, 86 for petaluma, 87 in novato so a nice warm afternoon for

salty bay mist. the report says the metal could rust and corrode. engineers discovered that ducts containing the tendons had been left unsealed. caltrans said it examined the tendons and found no problems. some engineers say they don't think the tendons would cause it to collapse during a major earthquake but say the corrosion could lead to costly repairs. in tiburon, health warnings posted to alert residents of a sewage spill there. friday they placed warning placards along the shoreline near paradise drive and mar west. the sanitary district collected water samples to determine the level of hazard. the tests will be completed within five days. in los angeles, firefighters have now contained one of two wildfires. the fire along i-5 broke out friday and destroyed more than 700 acres. crews had it fully contained late last night. another fire that broke out on wednesday near frasier park has destroyed more than 4300 acres,

currently that fire is 85% contained. tributes are pouring in for mikaella lynch, the 9-year-old autistic girl from san francisco whose body was found wednesday in a creek near her family's vacation home in clear lake. investigators believe she wandered off on mother's day and accidentally drowned. relatives and friends have now created a website to remember her, it's called mikaella's village and aimed to perfect her memory, spirit -- preserve her memory, spirit and way of life. in new york, a college student was accidentally shot and killed by police after being held at gunpoint by an intruder. early friday morning police responded to reports of a home invasion at an off-campus home near hofstra university. police say when officers arrived, the intruder had 21- year-old andrea rebello in a headlock and say the gunman threatened to leave before pointing his gun at an officer. >> the officer eventually fired eight rounds in total, seven of

those rounds struck our subject, one of those rounds struck the victim. >> police say smith was a violent ex-convict with a record dating back nearly 15 years. a university spokeswoman says students will be given white ribbons to wear in memory of rebello during today's graduation ceremony. accused ohio kidnapper ariel castro, how he was spending his time in jail. he is facing charges of kidnapping and rape after police say he held amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight for 10 years. right now he is in the county jail on suicide watch. his activities and behavior are logged every 10 minutes. police say for most part he spends his time sleeping, pacing around his nine by 9- foot cell and cleaning. the logs say he repeatedly asked what time -- repeatedly asks what time it is and very polite to prison guards. he was known as a national hero and an invited guest at the white house and now a former philadelphia police officer is being held on the

finish line for the bay to breakers near ocean beach, 7:53 on the clock so that means they are finishing at 53 minutes into the race, 7 1/2 miles, not a bad time for that. if you're planning on getting in your car and making your way into san francisco, that's what you're going to deal with. the green is good, the orange and red is sluggish and that is 19th avenue park presidio right there, highway one making your way to the golden gate bridge and as you get towards the golden gate bridge, don't forget the tour of california is underway in about 25 minutes or so so those cyclists will be making their way across the golden gate, also sluggish there in marin county because that is where the cyclists will be heading as they make their way toward santa rosa for the finish of the amgen, quite the day in san francisco. >> busy day. >> yeah. >> swimmers in the water as well but if we have visitors from out of town which we likely do, we are delivering up spectacular weather for them, right, rosemary? we can tell them this is how it is all the time in san francisco. >> as much as i enjoy the warmup, i do appreciate when

weather out there. >> good morning to you. it is a beautiful day out there, an enjoyable weather forecast especially if you like it warm, mostly clear, a few patches afog along the coastline. it's a mild one, temperatures up a few degrees over yesterday and i think we are going to see a rapid increase, even santa rosa starting out way warmer this morning by about 10 degrees. sunny skies, warmer temps in store for the afternoon and again tracking the possibility of an increase in fire danger tonight for our north bay hills as well as our east bay hills. i'll explain this, bring you your temperatures coming up. happening right now, runners and walkers are making their way through san francisco for the 102nd bay to breakers race. want to show you video of the start of the run which began at 7:00 a.m. the route will take people 7 1/2 miles through san francisco. we saw the serious runners as well as people out there ready to have a good time and many people dressed in costume. ktvu's alex savidge is at the start line where all the action began and security was tight there this morning. alex. >> reporter: yeah, was.

seriously, security obviously one of the serious issues for the san francisco police department, but obviously a very fun event. you know, you might look at it kind of like a mobile halloween party. this is what we have here, this is the start line of the bay to breakers and right now you can see these are sort of the stragglers. i don't mean that in a disparaging way but these are the folks that are taking it slow and, you know, they are taking the race slow, folks are still leaving the start line here, they are still coming. i don't know where all these runners are coming from but they are still coming from somewhere and they still want to take part in the bay to breakers. a beautiful day for a race. a lot of folks walk part of the race route, stop, chitchat, have a good time, socialize, that's part of the fun of the bay to breakers but on a more serious note, san francisco police, they really are out in force today. i talked with the chief early on this morning. he talked about the plan they have put in place here. they have beefed up their staff by about 25% additional

officers, undercover officers walking the route, running the route, to keep an eye on folks. they are also keeping an eye out for any suspicious packages and those sorts of things. you know what we are seeing out here live too is in light of what happened in boston, we are seeing a lot of love for boston, a lot of people wearing things in tribute to boston and i talked with one runner who was doing just that and i talked to him about how comfortable he feels today with the added security measures in place. >> with all that happened in boston, there was a lot of concern about whether there would be something going on here and i wanted to show the people in boston we are just as strong and we support them and we are running this race regardless of what happened so -- >> reporter: again, we are bringing it back out here live, san francisco police are doing their best to make sure this is a safe race today and that nothing takes place out here. one of the things they even did was along the race route they took out all the trashcans that are normally there and they put in clear trashcans, transparent trashcans so they could see what was inside of them just to be on the safe side really that's what the chief says is that he just wants to take e ex

sure this is a safe bay to breakers today for everybody taking part. 30,000 runners and i think we are sort of seeing the last few folks here of those 30,000 people leaving the start line here in downtown san francisco. we will continue to keep an eye on things here in downtown and we will send it back to you guys in the studio, mike and claudine. >> great. thanks, alex. at 5:00 this morning dozens of san francisco police officers gathered at moscone center, they went through a final check list before the run. officers who were there included bike patrol street cops and police chief greg suhr, the department is asking people for both patience and vigilance, vigilance in reporting any suspicious activity and patience because of traffic, gridlock around the race course and as alex just mentioned, there are a few new security measures at this year's bay to breakers. there are surveillance cameras at the start, middle and end of the 12k, backpacks or bags larger than 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches by 4 inches wide are

banned. there are some 17 law enforcement agencies involved in security during this race including the fbi and the sheriff's department, bomb technicians and king 9 units have -- k-9 units also brought in. >> crews on hayes hill. katie utehs is there with runners still making their way through. >> reporter: i have handpicked some of my favorite costumes. joined on my right by the teenage mutant ninja turtle. what inspired you to come out to bay to breakers? >> well, she ran it last year and we decided we will just join you and dress up, be a team. >> yeah. >> reporter: are you having fun so far. >> yeah. >> reporter: are you guys surprised at all by the energy of bay to breakers, some of the nudity? does anything shock you at this point? >> we were fair warned so -- >> we brought our own energy. >> reporter: you knew what you were getting into it. i'm going to let the turtles

get back on their way. we have friends from the sea, lobsters. what inspired you for this costume? >> we are the crustation nation, we have been doing this for 32 years and we are going from the bay to the breakers, it's appropriate. >> reporter: it's warm this year, you feeling toasty? >> i'm buttered up. >> reporter: all you clam chowder eaters out there, the lobsters, maybe not talk about that in front of these ladies. thank you so much. enjoy the rest of your run. we have a lot of people walking, the costumes are getting a little more wild. i did have one couple sitting here, they were counting the number of naked people and they were up to about 25 and i think at this point the number has gotten a little bit higher but we are all having a good time out here. there haven't been any injuries to report here. the first aid stand is over at the corner of alamo square but mike and claudine, send it back to you right now. a lot of runners, lot of walkers still making their way through here at hayes and scott. >> that's a long race dressed

the next couple of days and eventually we are looking at that northerly breeze really to strengthen in our hills and it's going to come later today, lasting into monday morning, so that will bring an elevated fire danger to our north and east bay hills. the winds are expected to gust pretty strong, 30 miles per hour or so, very dry conditions, very warm conditions, so again, we are tracking that for you. the national weather service has not issued an advisory but something to be aware of over the next 24 hours or so. 57 degrees in napa right now, 61 in novato. these numbers, two to 4 degrees warmer than where we started yesterday, mostly sunny skies even along the coastline, a few patches of fog this morning, keep pointing back to santa rosa because a whopping 12 degrees warmer at this hour than you were 24 hours ago and again it's that northerly breeze that we are beginning to feel. 59 in palo alto right now, mid- 50s in los altos hills so seeing a quick rebound and i think it warmup is just getting started. we've got a nice day in store for you when it comes to the temperatures and it will be

a live look towards the city of san francisco, drier warmer air in the bay area for your sunday. last leg of the amgen tour of california is about to start. christian kaplan live for us at marina green where the cyclists are getting ready to take off and heading for the golden gate bridge. getting close, huh? >> reporter: your timing couldn't be better. there is the sound right now, they have just fired the starting gun. we should be able to see the cyclists coming around the bend in just moments. this, the eighth and final leg of the amgen tour of california, the cyclists on their way here from san francisco's marina green going up to santa rosa. the whole trip expected to take just over 2 1/2 hours. you could tell these are some of the world's elite cyclists here getting ready and fans are out here to watch them this morning, a lot of excited fans. ktvu will bring you coverage this evening at 5:00 and at 10:00 on the results of this eighth and final leg of the amgen tour of california.

scare near stage 7 of the tour. the bomb squad used its robot to investigate a package. the suspicious looking box prompted livermore police to close several downtown streets a few hours after the tour raced through. >> when they told us to come in, that's when -- and lock the door, that's when i knew something is really going on and finally somebody asks what's going on and he says it was an incident. >> police told outdoor diners to move inside some businesses were told to close and evacuate. the bomb squad later determined the box is filled with postcards and not a threat. in virginia, as many as 60 people have been hurt after a car plowed into a crowd of parade goers. the accident happened yesterday at the hikers parade in damascus. investigators say the elderly man who was driving his cadillac in the parade may have suffered a medical emergency right before crashing. police say both bystanders and law enforcement worked together to help save lives.

>> hikers and law enforcement and ems and fire personnel picked up a 1997 cadillac into the air and pulled people that were pinned, trapped underneath this vehicle out to safety. >> the victims suffered injuries ranging from critical to superficial. three people had to be transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital. so far no deaths have been reported. just a couple minutes ago we showed you the amgen cyclists going across the start line and there they are now as they are headed towards the golden gate bridge. we are keeping an eye on it for you. we've got -- there they go again. >> doyle drive. >> so we are watching them as they cross -- get ready to cross the bridge. there you have a live shot of the golden gate bridge. we told you about the rolling closures that the chp is going to hold. they have got all traffic stopped on there and there you see the first clway across that really spectacular to be able to ride across that golden gate

out what caused a small plane to crash overnight killing two people on board. the plane went down near the auburn airport at about 12:30. officials confirm a distress call was sent out before the crash. investigators from the ntsb are scheduled to arrive in sacramento later this morning. and police in oakland looking for the suspect of a deadly shooting. that happened around 4:30 this morning in the area of 92nd and east 14th street. police say two people were inside their car when someone pulled up and started shooting to the -- into the driver's front door. the man in the driver's seat died at the scene and another person took themselves to the hospital with unknown injuries. anyone who may have witnessed the shooting is being asked to call police. and nearly half a dozen people are without homes this morning after an overnight fire in san francisco. fire crews responded to flames on valencia street near 16th shortly after 1:30 this morning. firefighters believe a two- alarm fire started at the we be sushi restaurant and then quickly spread to the thai house restaurant next door. at first it was clear if all the residents living above those restaurants had escaped.

>> we immediately took a life safety approach on this and made a quick search of the building while getting hose lines into the rear to start suppression efforts here. >> firefighters say everyone had gotten out before they got on scene. crews contained the flames in about an hour and so far no injuries havebeen reported. the cause of the fire is under investigation. there was just one big winner in last night's record powerball jackpot. more than $590 million, one ticket matching all six numbers was sold at a publix supermarket in zephyrhills florida. that's according to the deputy secretary of the florida lottery. the $590.5 million jackpot is the largest in powerball history. it is a few million dollars more than the jackpot shared by winners in arizona and missouri back in november. someone in san jose, though came awfully close to the jackpot with five winning numbers last night but they missed that powerball. that winning powerball ticket was sold at the 7-eleven at 2440 al ma din expressway, he

runners or so but there are thousands more who just come out to enjoy san francisco and the city is really known for this bay to breakers race. everybody here is having a good time. there's not been any police activity that we can see and people are really just getting water from the first aid tent. it's kind of getting hot out here. we have people that are in costumes, people that are shedding some of the warmer costumes. i'm going to send it back to you. it is turning into a bit of a block party out here. >> thanks, katie. let's talk about security because in the wake of the boston marathon bombings, security at bay to breakers is much tighter than normal. 17 federal state and local law enforcement agencies are all taking part in the security effort. there are dozens of san francisco police officers throughout the race course, some are on motorcycles, others are on bike patrol. there is also a command post set up, police chief greg suhr says the security plan is simple, maintain a police presence without interfering with the fun and spirit of bay to breakers. >> they have been going up and down since 3:00 in the morning. we have been here since before

5:00. we really want to be invisible, so that everybody has a blast, but we know that people are a bit anxious. >> police are using technology as well to help keep runners and spectators safe. police have installed surveillance cameras throughout that race course this year to get a better view of the 30,000 runners and 70,000 spectators. and here's a breakdown of some of the security measures this year. surveillance cameras are positioned, they are at the start, the middle and the end of this 12-kilometer course. backpacks, well, big ones not allowed if they are more than eight-by-eleven by four they are banned. the 17 law enforcement agencies involved in security include the fbi and the sheriff's office and then there are bomb technicians and k-9 units that have also been brought in as a precaution. right now the amgen tour of california is rolling along in marin county. we have new video from the start of the race stage of this earlier this morning. the riders took off from the starting line at marina green

at 8:57. crowds cheered on the cyclists as they made their way through the marina onto the golden gate bridge, the cyclists crossed that bridge about 10 minutes ago. here is a look at the route for today's eighth and final stage of the tour, runs 81 miles through san francisco, marin and sonoma counties and end in santa rosa, the home of bmc racing featuring tj van garderin who leads the race and expected to win. finishing the race in san jose will mark a milestone for pro cyclist michael torqueler. he was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash during a training ride on pine flat road. he spent time recovering at santa rosa memorial hospital and has been living and training in santa rosa since february. humboldt county sheriff's officials scaling back their search for a man suspected of killing his family. shane miller has been on the run for almost two weeks now. he is wanted for killing his wife and two young daughters in their shasta county home. investigators found his car in

humboldt county the next day and they have been searching the area since but they say there is no sign of miller. deputies have now taken down their command post but they say they will continue to patrol that area for the next few days. and a new report reveals there was some troubles at the home of layla fowler -- leila fowler long before she was killed. court documents indicate the family struggled financially and leila's father seen here in that plaid shirt had at least seven children born to at least four different women. five of the children lived with him in calaveras county. in child support filings the father barney fowler accused leila's mother priscilla rodriguez of not seeing their children for years. leila was stabbed to death on april 27th. her 12-year-old brother charged with the killing. his next hearing on may 29th. happening now, a memorial being held for a veteran longshoreman killed in an accident at the port of oakland. coworkers are gathering at a terminal to eulogize 78-year- old manuel simpson. he died on friday after the truck he was in apparently was
