welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. we're finding out more about the teenager killed in a triple shooting in east palo alto. the boy was in a car with three friends when someone riddled the car with bullets. within the last 40 minutes. ktvu's janine de la vega spoke with the victim's father and he thinks it may have been a case of mistaken identity? >> reporter: yes, that's right. that is because his son usually doesn't drive that car. he said his son was just hanging out with friends at mcdonald's. they were coming back here to drop-his brother and two men started shoot. there's a ton of broken glass here still on the ground. bullet actually hit into this home right here, narrowly missing people. now, the family has identified the boy who was killed as 16- year-old jose luis. his bad said he was a junior at woodside high school in redwood

city. just before 11:00, two men approached the maxima jose was in with three other friends when the men started to shoot. jose was dead when officers arrived. a 15-year-old and 16-year-old were hit by bullets. the 17-year-old was uninjured. jose's father said his son was not in a gang. as i mentioned before, the car he was driving was not his, which makes people believe somebody else may have been the target. >> he was a good kid, yeah. he never do anything. >> reporter: the family is grieving and did not want to talk about their feelings toward the gunmen responsible. police have a very vague description of the two suspect, two latino males seen running away. they hopped into a gray or silver sea dan. back out here live -- sedan.

back out here live, police will be knocking on doors, canvassing the neighborhood. they've already been here at the scene to process some of the evidence. one of the things they are gonna do is look over the car, the boys -- that the boys were sitting in to see if this could help them. coming up next you will hear more from the family and their feelings this morning on this terrible tragedy. reporting live from east palo alto, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland firefighters busy stamping out an oakland hills fire that have could gotten out of control very quickly. the flaming embers flying in the area near the chabot space and science boulevard off skyline boulevard. ktvu atara -- ktvu's tara moriarty has been out there since 4:30. tara? >> reporter: a group of young

adults was seen coming out of the woods. people are known to use these camp sites around here illegally. so the arson investigator is going to be looking into that as the possibility for this case. behind me, you can see there are fire crews still on the scene, putting out the hot spots. we have video. we arrived as crews were pulling hoses around 1:45. someone in the area called smoke and called 911. we were in the 10000 block of skyline boulevard near the that boat space and science center. at least two dozen of ifs were on the scene. the fire started about 500, 600 feet off the road not close to any homes. >> we investigated all of the areas and came up skyline. upon arrival, engine 4 was able to see a glow and make dark with where the engine was. >> reporter: the chief talking about how hard it was to find

the fire at the beginning. it took firefighters an officer hour and a half to find -- an hour and a half to find the fire and then they cleared the bush. some cars are being allowed through. this is the two-way street here. so the crews are taking up one lane and bicycles and cars are being allowed to use the other. not too many folks frequent this area. it's sort of remote. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:05. the chp is investigating a deadly crash in a remote area of west marin county. it happened early this morning on point reyes petaluma road outside of petaluma. investigators say a white pickup truck crashed into a free and burst into flames. the driver was pronounced dead on the scene. still not clear what led up to the accident. let's go back to -- let's go back to sal. you've been busy this morning. but it's l been relative

oklahoma. i'm gonna step out of the way and let you see what we're talking about. i'm standing in front of what was once a mobile home. you see the people hard at work there. that's the woman who lived here. that's her friends and some family who are here helping her go through what's left. you can see it's not much. but she says she's looking for pictures, jewelry, anything that she's able to salvage. where do you even begin when you are home that you call home is literally blown apart. let's get to some of the pictures. absolutely astounding images of some of these funnel clouds. oklahoma, they don't play around when it comes to storm chazing. that's one of the reasons why we see -- why we see much detailed video or detailed pictures coming out of here. they will send people right into the storms. when you see the funnel clouds dropping out of the sky, without very little warning,

it's just terrifying. you can see the damage they do. we're talking about hundreds of homes here. one fatality, miraculous loy, you hate to diminish a fatality because that's someone's loved one, but when you look at the area hit, it's -- it's amazing not many more were killed. in granbury, texas, six people died. a very large swath of an area that we're talking about here. the national weather service is predicting storms capable of producing tornadoes expected to hit this area, the exact same areas that were smacked in the face yesterday. that's supposed to happen later today, 3:00, 4:00 local time, forecasters keeping a very close eye on the skies, the radar as the people who are here, trying to pick up what happened yesterday. that's the latest from shawnee,

temperatures are beginning to warm up. sunny today, warm to hot, 70s, 80s and 90s. this is dallas, texas. emergency responders were gathering at the scene of a fire. here we are with the right pictures. this is a story we've been following since 4:45 this morning. a firefighter was unaccounted for. i radioed to say he was trapped inside the building.

we've learned they just carried this body out of this burned condo. a very saddening to this story. at least five people who lived in the condo complex have been rescued. one person has been treated for smoke inhalation. we just confirmed that a firefighter was killed in battling this fire in dallas, texas. back here at home, police in martinez have arrested a suspected arsonist in a hillside fire threatening homes. police say 48-year-old julie tenpenny was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance and arson. investigators think she was high on drugs when she used a lighter to ignite dry grass in the alhambra hills neighborhood yesterday. now, wind pushed those flames quickly. firefighters held the fire to 15 acres of grass out there. no homes were damaged. firefighters called in for water and rardant drops from planes -- retardant drops from planes to help get the fire

under control. the contra costa resources say those resources are needed after the department. homeowners are happy for the help. >> they had the helicopter coming over. we thought we were all right and then it started to flare up again really bad and the smoke got really heavy. >> about a dozen goats here, they wereth haved at the very height of the fire. neighbors helped chase down the goats. they had to do that a couple of years ago. the goats were put in a pickup truck. one police officer went to the hospital after injuring his leg after arrests julie tenpenny but he should be okay. happening right now in washington, d.c., the senate judiciary committee is debating a landmark immigration reform bill. there's senator durban right there. they want a compromise on

several issues. silicon valley companies don't like some of the language in the bill. committee members will try to come to a deal on whether beau americans should have the right to sponsor foreign-born spouses for green cards. the head of the associated press says the secret seizure chur of the reportersers phone records is a major threat. the head of the a.p. is considering suing the justice department. >> i don't know what their motive is but i can tell you their actions are unconstitutional. we don't question their right to conduct these sorts of investigations. we just think they went about it the wrong way. >> the government asked the a.p. to hand over records after the a.p. broke a story about a thwarted al qaeda plot in yemen. the white house is responding as congress gets ready to hold hearings be on the irs scandal.

kyla campbell is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom right now to tell us how this is affecting the president's approval rating. >> reporter: a cnn poll shows president obama's approval rating is up 2% since last month despite the irs audit. if it's up to republicans his 53 approval rating won't last. republicans and democrats are furious about the targeting of conservative groups. but members of the gop are especially critical of the white house. president obama said he was not aware of the inspected general's audit of the irs until he saw it on the news10 days ago. but the inspector says members of the obama administration were aware last summer. senate republican leaders say the white house is lying and offreaching. >> they are here to tell us what to do and this if they start criticizing, you get targeted. >> reporter: a woman criticized

for knowing the most and doing the least is set to testify. i will tell you about that more next hour. kyla campbell,tvnel news. at least 70 people have been killed in a wave of car bombings in iraq. the attacks targeted markets and crowded bus stops in shiite neighbors in baghdad. it's raising fears of a return to all of the sectarian violence that once brought iraq to the brink of civil war. also, north korea did it again. they fired a sixth short-range missile. >> the sixth in three days of the missiles were fired this morning. both were fired into the sea of north korea's east coast. now, tensions, as you know, have been rising between south korea and north korea since february after north korea was sanctioned by the united nations for carrying out a nuclear test. hackers in china may have launched some new attacks in the u.s. "the new york times" reports a very secret unit in

china's military is, once again, hacking american companies. that unit is believed to be responsible for hacking more than a hundred u.s. businesses over the past five years. reportedly stealing blueprints, clinical trial results and government documents. officials say the hackers may be going after some of the same companies targeted in previous attacks. 7:20. well, we're in for a really warm day all over the bay area. meteorologist, steve paulson, says a big change in the weather, it's literally right around the corner. also, the couch gag on the simpsons has become a tv classic, what a bay area woman has come up with that stand out from the rest. northbound 280, you see some slow traffic there getting up to highway 17. another look at the south bay commute -- straight ahead.

7:23. look at this big boy. a family on vacation in redmond, washington got a big surprise. a moose was taking a swim in their pool. they caught it on video, shooting out of their living room. this is a 7-foot tall moose casually wading in the pool. if eventually climbed out of the pool and left. for the first time, san francisco will be regulating commercial dog walking. after july 1st, dog walkers you will have to get a permit, have proof of liability insurance and undergo at least 20 hours of training. in addition, you will no longer be able to walk more than eight dogs at once. some critics say they are planning to file an injunction based on unconstitutionality. a woman of oakland was the winner of a designed contest for "the simpsons" gag. she was reported to a trip to the fox studios to see her idea

the bridge. but it does look okay. if you are driving in hayward, southbound 880 is slow before winton avenue on the way down to fremont. let's go to steve. well, clear skies, temperatures warming up. although we had huge differences in some, as much as 30, between 40 and 70 depending upon the breeze. it will be sunny, warm to hot. but this will be the warmest day. temperatures coming up, san rafael from 83 to 87. livermore from 86 yesterday to 90 and san jose from 81 to 86. but even under clear skies, temperatures will be really hard-pressed to stay warm after today because of a big low dropping from. 72 fairfield. 70 antioch. fairfield, antioch, out to vacaville, already very warm. a sunny monday. and then temperatures will turn south and then they keep going south, especially wednesday into thursday. we'll see a 20-degree -- 20-

7:30. we're learning new information about a big house fire in the hills above kentfield in marin county. it started early this morning on the 100 block of goodhill road in the kent woodlands area. alex savidge joins us live from outside the home with more on how the fire may have started. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well a ba taba tal yun family says they -- well, a battalion chief says the family was barbecuing last night and

that's what may have sparked this fire. it was a destructive fire, as you can see. it broke out here at this home. it's a 3500-square foot home. it caused quite a bit of damage, especially in the garage. there is a '66 mustangs, a classic car, destroyed by the games. the good news, no one was hurt. crews say a 95-year-old woman was home this morning along with her adult song and wife. all of them were able to escape unhurt. the flames broke out at about 2:00 in the morning. this home is on the 100 block of goodhill road in tentfield. investigators say the spire doesn't appear to be spin -- the fire doesn't appear to be suspicious. it may have started near the barbecue. >> from what i hear, they were barbecuing, done at about 7:00, they took the coals out of the barbecue and wetted them down. >> reporter: this fire grew

quickly in size. that's the -- that's why the kentfield fire department had to call in resources from several neighboring departments here in marin county. there was heavy damage throughout the home. in addition, there is also a guesthouse behind the mainhouse destroyed by fire. crews have ent is the last couple of hours trying to salvage whatever possessions they can from this home for the homeowners. obviously, the folks who are living here, they won't be able to stay here for the time being and are being helped out by the red cross. we're live in kentfield, ktvu channel 2 news. overnight, fire in san francisco destroyed an old pier, it's at the end of 23rd street in the central water front doing patch district and has not been used in decades. a fire boat was called in to flight the games from the water. a battalion chief says he believes homeless people may have started the fire by accident. in benicia, a man was killed last night after drive

-- after driving the wrong way on 680 for nine miles. this happened around 8:00 last night near marshview road. the police say the driver, who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol, got onto highway 80 in suisun city, going the wrong next and then he moved on -- direction and then he moved on and still went the wrong way. the driver of the other vehicle is expected to survive. this driver died at the scene. two people are suspected of a carjacking in berkeley. deputies have been searching for suspects in the green point area just east of novato. yesterday, they set up a perimeter in that area. police say the suspect abandoned the stolen vehicle in a driveway on sutton lane and they were last seen running into a wooded area. parents and students are returning back to a campbell elementary school for the first time since finding out one of their teachers was arrested for

a sex crime. san jose police have charged 41- year-old grant blair with attempting lewd acts with a minor. they said he set up a meeting online with a person he thought was a 13-year-old but was actually a police officer. blair teaches at the old orchard school in campbell. police say they have found no incidents of abuse among students there. san francisco police are investigating a frightening fall yesterday during a party after the beta breakers race. it happened on fell street around 3:30 near golden gate park. a 28-year-old man fell off the roof of an apartment building and is listed in critical condition. it's still not clear how he fell. this was the most serious indent at san francisco's -- incident at san francisco's major public event since the -- since the boston marathon bombings. there were bomb-sniffing dogs along the race route and security cameras at the start b

police reported only a handful of minor problems. really typical of any beta breakers race. officers arrested 23 people mostly for being drunk in public. 7:34. nobody has claimed the biggest powerball jackpot in history. the winning ticket is worth $590 million. it was sold at a grocery store in the suburb of -- in a suburb of tampa, florida. the winner's name won't keep secret for long. those names are public record. in the meantime two people from california, did not win the big jack pocket but they are instant millionaires anyway. one of two tickets world $2.3 million was sold in san jose at a 7-eleven. the other ticket was sold in kern county. both had five of the six of maaing numbers. the name of the san jose winner has not yet.

but a clerk described a man's reaction to hearing the good news. >> when he saw the ticket, he said, yes. you are the winner. no. say yes. oh, man. it's a lot of money. he happy. he looked happy. yeah. >> by the way, california joined the powerball lottery last month. a new government study shows a rise in the number of american children with mental health disorders. according to the centers for disease control and prevention. 13 to 20% of u.s. kids under 18 have mental disorders. that's estimated at 7 million to 12 million children. the study is billed as the first comprehensive look at the mental health status of children in the country. los angeles is the latest city to investigate a las vegas hospital accused of patient dumping in california.

the l.a. city attorney's office is looking into whether the hospital dumped patients along stateline. san francisco's city attorney is doing the same. a "sacramento bee" investigation claimed the city bussed out 1500 patients. drivers with the handicapped blackards don't have to pay for -- placards don't have to pay at meters. but that -- but that may soon change. this is being abused. brian flores has more on who is behind this controversial decision. >> reporter: it's no secret that park something rare -- park something rare, it comes at a premium. this is a hot topic issue, especially those with the placards. this is one of the areas where people, commuters, in fact, report seeing abuse of the disabled placards. with those people who have them, they may be charged to feed the meters. a few days ago, a committee of

about 15 people, about half of them, members of the disabled community. they spoke in front of the municipal's agency proposed this. currently people with the placards cannot only park in blue zones, but it will gives the driver to park for an unlimited time. parking is hard for everyone but especially for those who are disabled. some use those placarded to park for hours. the bottom line, how best to enforce it and how do you limit it. >> i have mixed feelings. i don't think they should be charged. there are legitimate people who really struggle. i know when i broke my knee, it was a real effort. but by the same token, there's people -- especially by pier 23

that will get out of their car and run across the street. >> reporter: now, ultimately, the state will have to weigh in. if there were changes, it probably won't happen until the fall. some would be to add more parking stones. the city is making changes on its own. they will be adding more officers for disabled placard enforcement. we're live here in san francisco, i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. want to check in with sal and what's happening at the bay bridge toll plaza this monday morning. >> it's pretty crowded. there hasn't been a crash but it's still pretty slow there westbound coming over from oakland san francisco. it's backed up for a 30, 35- minute delay. once you make it on the bridge, it looks okay getting into san francisco. there are no major problems. but again, it will be slow. san francisco is doing pretty well, northbound and southbound on 101 mere and on 280.

"per the agreement and our promise not to skew it up, tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business." yahoo!'s stock has been fluctuating. in our next hour of "mornings on 2," you will hear what the 26-year-old ceo of tumblr has to say about that deal. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police busy, offering a $10,000 reward for information to solve two deadly shootings. it happened 14 hours -- they happened 14 hours apart. a man was shot on west trip. no information on a victim, a suspect or a possible motive. police are also searching for the suspect who fired shots on a fire killing one man and injuring another. it happened about 4:30 on 92 under avenue and international. police -- 92nd avenue and international. police are offering a reward for each shooting that could lead to an arrest.

thousands of steel tendons on the bridge may be at risk of corroding. engineers discovered in 2006, the ducts containing the tendons were left unsealed which means rain and fog could have caused rusting and corrosion. caltrans tested 1600 of the tendons, found half of them had rust. only a few had moderate levels of corrosion. in a statement, the public information officer for the bay bridge says "this issue does not affect the safety or life span of the skyway." an engineer says caltrans used the wrong test and the results are meaningless. corrosion may be a factor in the failure of seismic rod failures last month. caltrans posted a video called war on corrosion. it's on youtube with more information on the way there dealing with the prob

the man's house and narrowly missed hitting people. let's go to video from earlier. the bullet that proved to be fatal hit a 16-year-old boy. he was a junior at woodside high school in redwood city. police say at 11:00 last night, he and three friends were sitting inside a white maxima on fordham street when two men walked up to the car and started to shoot. officers say 25 bullets were fired. jose tied at the scene. his friends ran to a house. two were hit. jose's father said he heard the gunshots. >> running to inside to the house, yeah, and we -- we heard that -- a shooting and we go inside. we didn't see my son. i went outside to the car and he was there.

welcome back. we have new information about a big early-morning house fire in the hills above kentfield in marin county. it started in the 100 block of goodhill road in the kent woodlands area. alex savidge is live with more on how this fire may have started. alex? >> reporter: well, investigators this morning are looking into whether hot coals from an unattended barbecue may have sparked this fire. it did quite a bit of damage to this large home. it's a 3500-square foot place here in kentfield. as you can see, a good portion of the roof collapsed during this firefight. the good news, no one was hurt when this fire broke out at about 2:00 this morning. this home on the 100 block. crews say a 91-year-old woman was home at the time along with her adult son and the son's wife. everybody managed to escape

unhurt after they noticed the fire. the next door neighbor i talked to said he got a knock on the door early this morning. >> the woman from next door says our house is on fire. call 911, which is what i did, and came out and saw a wall of flames about 15, 20 feet high. >> reporter: this fire quickly grew in size. that's part of the reason, the kentfield fire department called in resources from a number of neighboring marin county agencies. a good portion of the home was damaged and there's also a guesthouse behind the main home that was destroyed. the fire also burned through the garage and it destroyed a prize possession for this family. this vintage -- this vintage '66 mustang. the family is being helped out by the head cross.

the fire investigators are out here trying to determine the cause of this fire. back to you. 8:29. we have new information about the woman suggested of arson who was -- suspected of arson who was arrested in martinez. this is a first look at the suspect. julie tenpenny of concord. police say she was seen using a lighter to ignite dry grass yesterday. reportedly she was high on drugs, and even fought with police injuring one of them. now, here's the damage police say she caused. flames that threatened homes in the alhambra hills neighborhood near pleasant hill. the wind pushed the fire along steep slopes. firefighters rushed in. the helicopter dropped water and a flame dropped fire retardants as homeowners were packing up just in case they have to evacuate. it's terrifying, you feel the heat, the hear the crackling of the fire. the ashes are flowing over.

ther was a 90-minute firefight and they were able to keep it to 15 acres. police say the officer hurt in the struggle with julie tenpenny suffered injuries to his leg. he was taken to a hospital and will be okay. julie tenpenny was arrested for being under the influence of and also accused of arson. into in other news -- fire in -- in other news, fire destroyed and old pier in the doing patch district. the pier has not been used in decades. a fire boat was called in to fight the flames from out in the water. the battalion chief told ktvu he thinks homeless people may have started that fire by accident. in benicia, a man was killed last night after driving the wrong way on busy 680 for nine miles. this happened around 8:00 on northbound interstate 680 near marshview road. the chp says the driver who was under the influence of drugs and alcohol got onto highway 80 in suisun city heading in the

wrong direction. he transferred to 680, still going the wrong way, and crashed head on into a hummer. he died at the scene. the driver of the hummer is expected to survive. in marin county, the search continues for two people suspected of a carjacking in berkeley last week. deputies have been searching in the green point area, east of novato. yesterday, officers set up a perimeter in the area. police say the suspects abandoned the stolen vehicle in the driveway on sutton lane and were seen running into awooded area -- awooded area. -- a wooded area. san jose police have charged 41-year-old grant blair with attempting lewd acts with a minor. they say he reportedly set up a meeting online with somebody he thought was a 13-year-old but was really a police officer. blair teaches at the old

orchard school in cam bem. police found no incidents of abuse among the students there. san francisco police are investigating a frightening four-story fall from a building during a party after the beta breakers race. it happened on fell street about 3:30 near golden gate park. a 28-year-old man fell off the roof of this apartment building. he's now listed in critical condition. it's still not clear how he fell. this was the most serious incident at san francisco's first major public event during the bombings. this year's beta breakers had unprecedented security including undercover cops in running gear. there were bomb-sniffing dogs along the route, security guards at the started a finish line. large p bas were banned -- large backpacks were banned. about 23 people were arrested, mostly for being drunk in

cool? $1.1billion ais apparently the -- is apparently the answer. yahoo! is buying tumblr. they are more than 100 million users and is especially popular with teenagers and young adults. the deal similar to google buying youtube and facebook by buying instagram. in a statement from yahoo this morning, per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business. tumblr's ceo echoed that statement. he says "our team isn't changing. our road map isn't changing and our mission to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve certainly isn't changing." yahoo! says karp will stay on as ceo.

disturbing news coming from the fox con factory in china. that's one of the companies that manufacturers parts for ap -- manufacturers parts for apple. three workers committed suicide in less than a month. this comes after fox con says they need to cut back on mandatory overtime for employees. thousands of steal tendons on the skyway part of the new bay bridge may be at risk of corroding. the "sacramento bee" reports engineered discovered in 2006 that ducts containing the tendons were left unsealed. that means rain and fog could have caused the ducts to rust and corrode. caltrans tested 1600 of the tendons and found half had rust but says only a few had moderate levels of corrosion. in a statement, the public information officer for the bay bridge says "this issue does not affect the safety strength or the life span of the skyway"

from colorado springs this, a rare look at the amazing rescue of a bear that ended up in the tree. the 200-pound black bear got stuck two stories high. they had to tranquilize it before lowering it down to the ground by ropes dangling from a fire department ladder. in overnight news, a mountain lion was spotted in portola valley. the lion was seen around 2:00 a.m. near portola road. wildlife officials say if you see a mountain lion, never approach it especially if it's feeding or with offspring.
