a teenager has been killed in a traffic accident. it's one of two traffic incidents in the bay area that took the lives of two children. today. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. but first, developing news out of richmond where a 5 whyled girl died this morning when the car she was riding in -- 5-year-old girl died this morning when the car she was riding in crashed. the car tolled over at richmond

and hilltop drive. the girl was thrown from the car. paramedics took her to the hospital in oakland where she died. five other passengers had minor to moderate injuries. police say own the -- only the driver was wearing a seat belt. >> statistics show show that if a child is restrained properly, the survival rate is higher.

>> robert han ta is live with comment from a driver involved in an accident. >> reporter: didn't. we're at one of the busiest hint -- good afternoon. we're at one of the busiest intersections in san jose. san jose police continue its investigation into this fatal accident. now, this was the view from newschopper2 this morning when a 16-year-old male was riding his bike when he was hit by a white truck going northbound on silver creek road. it was a frantic scene on the road as paramedics tried to revive the teenager who police say was not wearing a helmet. he was taken to the hospital but died about a half-hour

later. as police inspected the scene, traffic investigations began to -- investigators began to investigation. they interviewed the driver of the pickup truck. that question is still going on. police say he's being cooperative. i talked to the driver. he was distraught and say police had taken blood and saliva samples from him. when i asked him about what happened, he said there was heavy traffic and declined to say more. >> as far as determining fault, we don't have any indication who was at fault. our investigators are conducting interviews at this time. but we don't have any idea where -- whether it was the driver or the bicyclist. >> reporter: the silver creek high principal says grief counselors will be on hand now that students have been told what happened. we heard from local residents who say they've been complaining about this incident for a long time.

this is the ninth bicycle/vehicle accident. there were 12 last year. back to you. >> thank you. the chp is investigating a deadly crash in a remote area of west marin county. it happened early this morning on point reyes road. investigators say a white pickup truck crashed into a tree and burst into flames. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. it's still not clear what led up to the accident. police in palo alto are trying to track down two gunmen who opened fire in a car full of teenagers. one of the teenagers was shot and killed. we've learned he was a football at a high school. janine de la vega is live and spoke to the victim's dad. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. there is a group of people gathered in front of the home of jose. there's a makeshift memorial. ther was a tremendous amount of

gur on fordham road. the bullets were flying everywhere. one of the bullets went into the family home. candles were hit and prayers were set at lewis's home. his father hit the gunshots that killed jose as he was sitting in the driver's seat at 11:00 last night. >> two in the leg. yeah. >> reporter: the car was riddled with bullet holes. a 15 and 16-year-old who were passengers were hit by the bullets but are expected to survive. another teen was uninjured. they told officers two latino men walked up to him and started to shoot. officers found at least 25 bullet casings at the scene. >> there was definitely no communication between the suspect and the victims. the victims were just sitting in the car. the car was running. and they were possibly waiting

for somebody to come out of a house so they could leave. >> reporter: police are trying to figure out if there's any connection to other recent gang- related shootings. jose's father said the boys were hanging out at mcdonald's and had come home to pick up jose's father when the gunfire erupted. >> he was a good kid. yeah. candlelight. >> reporter: jose's father says his son is not in a gang and the car he was driving was his friend's. his father believes his son was not the intended target. he was a junior at woodside high school in woodside and used to play on the football team. now, at the high school, there were about 30 students who were already talking to grief counselors and they also had a moment of silence at the school. back out here live again, you can see more people have arrived with flowers. another young boy arrived here on crutches. we're not sure at this point if that was one of the victims who

was released at the hospital, because, again, they just arrived. but a very sad story here in east palo alto where this is their fifth homicide of the year. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. a man who fell from a roof during a beta breakers party yesterday afternoon has died. the accident happened about 3:30 at a house on fell street. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the three-story fall. the medical examiner is not releasing the man's identity but his employer, demand force, identified him as 28-year-old david hansey. firefighters across the -- firefighters across the bay area are on alert as hot temperatures and dry, breezy winds are fueling fire danger. this is mt. diablo. there's elevated fire in the north and east bay hills where the wind gusts this morning were measured at almost 40 miles an hour. the winds have died down. conditions are improving across the bay area.

rosemary orozco will be here in a few minutes with more on the conditions. and firefighters ar keeping a close watch on the area in the oakland hills where a fire broke out overnight. it started just before 1:00 this morning off skyline boulevard near the chabot space and center center in redwood regional park. one of our crews was there as the firefighters were rolling out the hoses. there were a lot of lem bers flying around. it -- a lot of embers flying around. it took them about an hour and a half to contain the names. fire crews they think illegal campers may be to blame. >> we don't do open bonfires, open pits. we have histories and we're susceptible to high fire danger. we always want to be cognizant of any type of flame or fire. >> reporter: the fire burned about three acres of threes, grass and rush -- trees, grass and brush. california's top politician

it's official. silicon valley's yahoo!announced it is buying tumblr. alex savidge is live with more reaction to this. >> reporter: one tech analyst i talked to here in san francisco told me today the goal of this deal is to try to make yahoo!cool again. it's a play for younger users. marissa mayer announced this $is .5 billion deal to -- $1.5 billion deal to buy tumblr. most of the visitors are in their teens and 20s. the company will be operated independently. it won't be moving west. tumblr's headquarters will remain in new york. they are trying to breathe new life into this. a cnn analyst states there's a lot riding on this deal from mayer who came over from google

chicago. the 787's batteries are blamed for two fires on planes. boeing has redesigned the battery system. japan's all nippon airways could resume it's flights next month. if you think there's a lot of construction now at san francisco international airport, get ready for more. about an hour ago, mayor lee announced plans to the airport over the next ten years. brian flores is live at sfo with what passengers can expect. >> reporter: the idea behind the improvements was the success from a terminal 2. officials hope to bank on that success to terminals 3 and others throughout the airport. this is a $4.1 billion-dollar capital improvement plan. the plan will take about ten years for all improvements to be completed. player lee made the announcement in terminal 3.

some additions will improve security and concourse at terminal 3. but a renovation. there are plans to include local businesses and a luxury hotel also at the airport as well. but for officials they say -- >> that $4.1 billion will reflect a large number of construction jobs. obviously the high level of professional service engineering design jobs as well as the concession jobs and the concession developedders that more and more reflect the diversity of our economy. >> now, somebody has to pay for all of these improvements. so i spoke with airport officials who say the cop session sales will be the -- concession sales will be the driving force. >> the airport is generating

stealing $10,000 from prostitutes. in kentfield, a fire started in the 100 block of goodhill road. we first brought you this story on our morning newscast. investigators are looking at the possibility a barbecue used earlier in the evening touched off the fire. three people in the house ran next door and called 911. fire officials put the damage at $500,000. an iconic san francisco restaurant is expanding to the east coast. they will open a second location in washington, d.c. just a few blocks from the white house. this is a first for the eatery which has been around for more than 140 years. san francisco police chief greg sur is the great grandson of the restaurant's founder. >> i've always thought this is the best restaurant in the world. now that there will be another restaurant on the east coast,

mid-80s -- antioch. mid-80s in an concord. half moon bay checking in right about 59 degrees. a bit cool there. not too bad but a reading just south of this one showing half moon bay showing in right at 63. slightly warmer than that reading we see on the map. ridge of high pressure right over california today. that is what is continuing our warmup for the afternoon. but we have a system, can't really see it. but it's dropping off canada and it will be sitting off the washington coastline tomorrow. the cooler temperatures, so you are going to feel that difference in the next 24 hours, i would say, by tomorrow you will feel the onshore breeze. for today, 5 to 15 above the average. 60s to 70s. warmer than that around santa cruz. and we're talking 80s to low 90s. take a look at these numbers.

89 for santa rosa today. 86 in novato, 76 in richmond, upper 70s for sausalito. into the east bay, we have upper 70s to low 80s around the east bayshoreline. livermore, 90 degrees for you. santa clara valley going to be nice and warm as well. 86 san jose, 87 saratoga. mid-80s in santa cruz, right there by the water, it will feel pretty good. 81 in san mateo. upper 70s in san francisco. 60s to low 70s for half moon bay as well as pacifica. the extended forecast, take a look at that tumble as early as tomorrow. our inland communities dropping anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees bringing us back to where we should be for this time of year. we hold onto the trend. low 60s at the coast. low 70s inland and into the weekend temperatures rebound nicely. >> sounds good. the life of a dog has been saved in santa cruz county. animal shelter officials say it three firefighters to find the

dog in the watsonville area. he was emaciated and confusioned and may have been on the island for more than a month. they say the dog survived by eating bird eggs and is recovering at the santa cruz animal shelter. from colorado springs, the dramatic rescue of a bear caught on tape. the bear got stuck in a tree about 20 feet up, had to be tranquilized before being dangled down. firefighters say they often get cats out of trees but this is different. we'll tell you when the bay area will learn if the super bowl is coming to the new 49er stadium.
