a massive tornado devours an oklahoma city suburb, killing dozens of people, and turning day into night. >> this is horrible. horrible. >> amid the twister's devastation, rescue workers search for children in the ruins of a flattened elementary school. good evening, i'm julie haener. >> i'm frank somerville. 51 people are confirmed dead tonight and that number is expected to rise, as search and rescue crews continue through the evening, looking for more victims. the storm was packing winds of up to 200miles per hour when

it made a direct hit on the city of moore, oklahoma. heather holmes is here with what we know right now. >> the frank, the president declared a major disaster in oklahoma after this beast of a tornado. take a look at some of the video. this was captured by a man sitting in his car, as this massive twister headed his way. >> for 40 terrifying minutes, the small town of moore oklahoma was undersiege by this monstrous tornado. >> it was just unbearably loud. >> reporter: teachers and

children at plaza towers elementary also took shelter. the storm was an ef-4, the second most powerful type of twister. seven children from the school are among the dead, with many still missing tonight. >> our hearts are just broken for the parents that are wondering the state of their children. >> reporter: the governor of oklahoma has called up national guard members to assist in the search and rescue operations. >> make sure that we have looked under every single piece of debris and every single building. >> reporter: first responders weren't the only ones rushing to help in the path of the killer storm, and trapped in the rubble. >> trying to pull cooler doors off, and everything, and they got the record truck in. sadly, they found a man and then a woman and a small baby. >> me and one of the other guys

pulled a teacher out. she was on top of three kids. the kids were fine. she was hurt pretty bad. we put her on top of the jeep and wheeled her out. >> reporter: tonight, emergency crew workers are crawling among the ruins looking for any survivers. frank and julie, dozens of children are believed to still be trapped. heather holmes, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> more details now, the last census shows moore is a community of about 55,000 people. the national weather service estimates the path of the tornado to be 20 miles long. and we have just learned that the death toll has now gone up from 51 to 91 people, including 20 children, 7 from that school that was leveled. at least 145 people are injured. 79 of them said to be minors. of course, a massive outbreak of tornadoes today, and even last night. the thing that struck me today about this oklahoma city, moore

city tornado was that the national weather service just moments before this occurred issued a rare tornado emergency. what that means is, as we look at how the tornado looked, just before as it was developing, you see the rotation here, as it was going towards moore, you see right here. right about this time, the weather service issues a tornado emergency. that means there is a high likelihood of numerous fatalities. we're hearing reports of anywhere from a mile to a mile and a half at the base of the tornado. they're unconfirmed, but that is a big tornado. an ef-4. the path of this tornado, about 20 miles long. at this time, you're looking at perhaps 3 to 4-inch hail. heavy rain. this is just one of the storms. there were numerous storms throughout the that area, from

the great lakes region south towards texas. more in the forecast, unfortunately for this area tomorrow. we'll keep you posted on any updates. coming up tonight at 10:30, the even stronger tornado that once cut a very similar path of destruction in oklahoma. in fact, it was among the costliest in u.s. history. new at 10:00, animal control officers in san francisco are telling us about an increase in animal cruelty cases. ktvu is live to show us what officials are calling an extreme case involving a puppy. >> reporter: the 10-month-old puppy was brought here to the san francisco animal shelter this morning. officials here tell me, they need the public's help. animal care and control officials say the pug chihuahua mix suffered a severe beating which caused her to go blind and suffer damage to a spinal

cord. >> it's atrocious. i've seen a lot of horrific cases, and this is right up there. >> reporter: a handful of cases reported in recent weeks in san francisco. this is scratchy. a year and a half old tibeten terrier. she was thrown to the ground. a 1-year-old pit bull was dropped from a 2nd floor window. both owners are facing felony animal cruelty charges was officials say people who abuse animals often have a criminal history. >> violence animals is a precursor, or indicater of violence against people or children. this is a red flag. >> reporter: animal care and control showed us this photo of 40-year-old raymond gililm. he's a person of interest in the pug mix puppy. >> he's wanted for questioning. >> reporter: i'm told it will

need animal treatment for at least another week, and may be a while before she's ready to be adopted. a person convicted of felony animal abuse, or neglect faces up to three years in county jail, and fines up to 20 though dollars -- $20,000. 27-year-old man from the east bay who ran the beta breakers race is missing tonight. he was last seen near the finish line at observation beach in san francisco. worried friends reported bo rasmussen missing about 10:00 this morning and then joined the coast guard in a search along the beach. one friend received a call from a stranger who found rasmussen's cell phone and credit cards, but they say they really started to worry when he failed to show up to work today. >> i do know that beau is a responsible guy. he just got a promotion.

he's very reliable. which is why we are so concerned that we haven't heard anything. because it's just totally out of character. >> rasmussen lives in oakland, and works at a renewable energy company in san ramon. in ten minutes, new details about a man who died in a tragic fall after the race. what we've learned about the victim and the accident. a rush hour crash in hercules sent a car careening off the road. the accident happened at about 5:30 tonight east of willow avenue. the highway patrol says a woman driving an suv rear ended a honda. officers say the suv driver then lost control of her vehicle. the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. her name has not been released. now to oakland, where two people are in custody tonight, two others are on the loose after leading alameda county

sheriffs deputies on a high speed chase. the car took off, leading deputies through the fruitvale district and ending on mcarthur. two people were arrested, two more ran off. oakland police say they believe all four were involved in an earlier home invasion. the police chief in east pailo alloto has declared a 30 day crime emergency starting tomorrow after a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed outside his home. police planned to cancel days off, double street patrols, and also partner with county anti- gang units in an all out effort to stop the violence. >> reporter: tonight friends and family burned candles on fordham street, where the 16- year-old was shot and killed. >> i was shocked. i didn't know what to think. >> he wasn't a person to do harm to anyone. he was no drama. >> reporter: flowers and

messages of grief placed just feet away from where the sophomore was gunned town, as he sat in a nissan maxima with three friends about 11:00 last night. he heard the gunfire and rushed out. two friends in the backseat, 15- year-old, and 16-year-old boys were injured. a 17-year-old in the passenger seat was not hurt. it was not jose's car, and wondered if the shooting might have been a case of mistaken identity. the killing has prompted the east palo alto police chief to declare an emergency. >> we believe a gang is responsible for a lot of the increase in violence. to work effectively, we definitely have to use the intelligence that our gang intelligence units possess here within the county. >> reporter: investigators say tonight, they are reviewing video from a police cruiser

a fire in vacaville today moved dangerously close to several homes. the fire started shortly before 3:00 this afternoon off tim road. a barn and travel trailer were destroyed. firefighters say the wind was a real concern, but only about 15 acres burned. another fire in contra costa county sent firefighters scrambling and put neighbors on edge. ktvu's ken wayne is in orinda now. >> reporter: one fire engine company here on the ridge top, another one down below to make sure this doesn't flare up overnight. for some residents here, it was the scene of rather nerve racking activity earlier today. firefighters moved quickly to contain a fast moving, wind whipped wildfire burning up the slopes of the grassy parkland.

flames moving closer and closer to multimillion dollar homes. >> it really flaired. it's right across the street from my house and right behind my neighbors house. my two good neighbors here. a man started ringing the doorbell frantically, and we opened it up and there was smoke everywhere. >> reporter: she had just enough time to lead her home to safety. >> it was really coming up fast, and we were really, pretty worried. >> we were fortunate that we didn't lose homes. we did put fire engines in place to protect those homes early on. >> reporter: the early start to fire season is already keeping firefighters busy. with neighboring contra costa county fire crews going through budget cuts, it's going to be a more challenging year. >> we rely on them a lot to help us, and we help them also, so i think more help there be going there way now that they've shut down some fire

investigators accuse tenpenny of using a lighter to start a fire on the dry grass. no homes were damaged. governor jerry brown says safety problems may delay the opening of the bay bridge. this is the first time the governor has talked about concerns over the structural integrity over the bridge. also, caltrain is saying steel cables called tendens may be to blame. the engineer says more cables could be added if needed. in san jose, instead of celebrating the last week of school, students are mourning the loss of a 15-year-old boy who was killed while riding his bike this morning. news chopper 2 was over the scene at east capitol expressway and silver creek road. police say the boy was hit by a pickup truck. he was on his way to silver creek high school about 7:30 thomark. friends have identified him as andy martinez. they say he was someone who was

really happy, and had a positive outlook on life. >> knowing he was just a little kid, and a little brother, hurts a lot. >> ktvu did talk to the driver who was involved in the accident. said traffic was very heavy at the time. police also took blood and saliva samples. expert climbers are calling it a freak fall that sent a rock climber plunging 230 feet to his death. it happened on yosemite after a large flake of granite broke off, and severed his climbing rope. his partner who was below him was not hurt. we're hearing more from a man who fell from the top of a building after the bay to breakers race yesterday. >> reporter: neighbors along the panhandle district say

they were shocked and saddened after a man fell four stories during a bay to breakers after party. >> i was home and i heard a third. >> reporter: he described the horror of onlookers outside this apartment building. >> it was crazy. literally, just a couple of minutes after i heard it, i started hearing police sirens. >> reporter: the victim was identified to us by his player as david hamza. police say he was among six people on the roof of this condominium. >> apparently, they had been drinking at this party, and unfortunately fell off the roof. >> it's unclear if a building residents, or outsiders threw the party. police say this does not appear to be a criminal case. >> horrified. awful to think of somebody falling off for any reason. >> the homeowners association treasurer, says some residents actually left the building yesterday to avoid out of control bay to breakers partying. >> it's just such a tragedy.

new details tonight about a deadly accident. 5-year-old zaniya jackson was the little girl killed today when she was ejected from an suv, and rolled over. police say that little girl might have survived if the adults in that car had taken one simple step. >> reporter: it is one of the busiest roadways in rich -- richmond, for most of the day, it was quiet and empty save for a few police cars and this suv. the last car of the morning commute. >> that was very hard to see. >> reporter: tammy heard the crash at 8:00 a.m., and came out of her apartment to see a dying child, lying in the road. >> it's heartbreaking to know that this child apparently did not have their seat belt on. >> reporter: the 30-year-old woman from san pablo was heading westbound, when she

apparently lost control after swerving to avoid another car at the intersection. >> potentially, the driver of the suburban, their attention may have diverted to something else. >> reporter: the 5-year-old girl was in the backseat, thrown from the suburban as it rolled at least twice. she suffered major head drama, and died at the hospital. police say the girl's death was almost certainly avoidable. and that driver could face charges. >> the 5-year-old, for sure should have been secured properly in a child's seat or at least seat belted. >> reporter: what tammy witnessed was horrible. she called friends and family members to remind them to buckle up. >> just one easy step and i could have saved my child. >> reporter: richmond police say all the six people were from san pablo, and only one was wearing a seat belt. that was the driver. the california state senate

passed a bill to regulate medical marijuana. it's an effort to deal with objections from the federal government. federal prosecutors have been cracking down on dispensaries. saying nearly anyone can get pot. the bill now moves to the assembly. meantime the state assembly passed a deal for community colleges. fees would match those for non- residents. the average is $200 per unit. some lawmakers object to the disparity in costs. this bill heads to the state senate. ray manzarek, the keyboardist, and co--founder of the legendary band, the doors, died today from cancer. ♪ [ music ] he teamed up with singer jim morrison in 1965 to form the doors. they sold more than 10will hits

new information now on the deadly tornado that hit moore,

oklahoma. the death toll stands at 91. at least 20 of these killed were children. we just spoke with a reporter covering the situation in moore. she told us, people there are walking away from their homes, pushing baby strollers, and suitcases dismayed from the destruction. when she asked when they were headed, she just said they don't know. she said the area is extremely chaotic. the reporter says people are coming from all over to help those in need. >> the woman was in tears. she says i'm not crying about my house. i'm crying because of all of these people here to help me. oklahomans just help each other. they don't ask questions. >> reporter: the reporter also tells us that right now, there are a lot of volunteers lined up to help with the search and rescue efforts. those operations are expected to continue through the night. this wasn't the first time that

moore, oklahoma has been through a devastating tornado. >> it's mind boggling to imagine, but in 1999, a tornado that was even more powerful leveled large parts of that town. meteorologists say it is unusual for a tornado to track roughly the same path. back in 1999, the tornado was an ef-5. that's the highest it can be, with winds clocked at 300 miles per hour. we sent reporter tom vacard to cover the aftermath 14 years ago, and he found one stunning example of the power of nature. >> reporter: the people on this block say this car belongs with this house. but they say they have no idea who owns this truck, but they're pretty sure it came from the sky. >> according to the national weather service, texas sees the most tornadoes. over the last 30 years, texas has averaged 150 tornadoes per year. kansas is second with 78 per

we have developing news in the south bay at this hour, where a pedestrian has been struck and killed. according to the highway patrol, the accident happened at 9:24 tonight near madeleine drive and south white road in east san jose. these are pictures now live from the scene. the chp reports the victim was in a crosswalk. our crew is on the scene now working to learn more as soon as they get any new information we will let you know. the remains of almost three dozen military veterans were laid to rest today decades after their military service and deaths. rob spoke with a man who made it his mission to give those

men a properly burial. >> reporter: under escort by more than 100 motorcycle riding veterans, the ashes of 35 all but forgotten marines, soldier, and air men are finally home. >> leonard allen. >> reporter: in each flag draped box are the remains of veterans who died in sonoma county, without family, friends, or money. no one knew they had served their country and they all earned the right to a military funeral. >> these 35 veterans have been lang wishing, especially as indigent veterans in a common crypt. >> reporter: this afternoon, each one was acknowledged and thanked. it were retired fire chief, ron collyer who made it his mission to confirm which remains were that of veterans. >> it was a great day. you couldn't ask for a better day, than to bring it to closure like this. >> reporter: the remains of two

this is the fourth day of the seven day labor strike for nurses and medical technicians in the east bay.

today, they were trying to bring attention to a $142,000 fine. cal osha slapped the hospital with a total of six violations for potentially exposing staff and visitors to contagious diseases such as tuberculosis. officials say they are appealing the fine. thousands of medical workers are set to go on strike tomorrow morning at ucsf. the strike will have a negative impact on patients. that was shortly before a sacramento judge issued a temporary injunction barring 450 employees from the strike. more than 12,000 are planning to walk off their jobs at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow. the two sides are at odds over pay and staffing levels. today, the men who planned to run the contra costa county enforcement team pleaded guilty to a series of charges including stealing from

prostitutes, and conspiracy to distribute marijuana and methamphetamine. his attorney says wielsch committed the crimes while suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. holding a smart phone in public is now all it takes to be a prime target for criminals. cell phones are now involved in 50% of all robberies. the new way those crimes are being tracked. >> reporter: she says her iphone was stolen when she set it down for a moment at work. >> it was seriously like 5 minutes. >> reporter: with the help of her brother and a cell phone tracking app, she found the thief and got her phone back. >> it's not even an iphone 5. why do you want my iphone 4? >> they're still valuable. >> i guess. >> reporter: in the last 6 months more than 500 victims in san francisco did report them to police. idg and info world published
