super bowl l has been awarded to san francisco. [ cheers ] >> there it is. the cheers. breaking news from san francisco. the bay area gets super bowl l. the announcement came down less than ten minutes ago. the nfl owners vote for the foggy bay area over sunny miami. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. the super bowl is coming to the
12:01 pm
bay area. in just the past ten minutes, the nfl approved the bid for santa clara to host the super bowl l game. levi stadium will will be the site. they are planning to move to the new stadium in 2014. that's where janine de la vega joins us now to tell us the reaction once this news came down. janine? >> reporter: everybody was just jumping up and down. this whole room was alive with excitement. you could see the aftermath. people are twirling around their red 49ers' flags. a lot of fans talking about how exciting this decision was. i want to go and show you just moments ago how this room reacted, if we can go to video of that right now.
12:02 pm
>> super bowl l has been awarded to san francisco. [ cheers ] >> reporter: and that's everybody jumping up and down. you know, it -- it was five and a half years of council meetings to try to get the stadium here and now to have this exciting decision, we just spoke with the mayor and he talked about how it's history in the making, that super bowl l will be held here in 2016. i believe that we violent found from the mayor. this is what he told us moments ago. >> it's been an honor and a privilege to work on this effort over the past nine months and jed and mayor lee and mayor mathews and and -- mayor reed, we pulled together -- >> we're listening to a news conference going on in boston from the nfl.
12:03 pm
they have announced that the super bowl l will be played in san francisco. let's listen in. >> and we're excited to show all of you what the bay area has to offer in 2016 for super bowl l at levi stadium. thank you. any questions? >> when did you know that -- [inaudible [workweek. >> listen, when the york family and the nfl invested in helping get a new stadium, that was a huge milestone for us. you know, we've had the ability to host an event of this caliber for a very long time. we just didn't have the stadium. now we have levi stadium and the bay area is thrilled. >> where does this fit into the overall revitalization of the
12:04 pm
franchise? where does the super bowl fit into that? >> after losing a super bowl, it's nice to win a super bowl. so that feels really good right now. this is about -- it's about the community and obviously the team on the field, we're competing for super bowl. we've been in the final four for the past two years and we expect to compete. off the field, you want to make sure that you have a first- class stadiums, not just your own fans, but the hundreds of millions of fans that enjoy the game, now they will have a place to enjoy the next generation of super bowls, the next generations of stadiums. and that's what levi stadium will be. it's bringing the entire community together from the nfl to levis to the folks that were out there pounding the streets for votes when we were trying to get the this passed. it's bringing everyone together. i think it shows the 49ers try to win with class both on and off the field. this is one of those examples off the field.
12:05 pm
and hopefully, like everybody who hosts a super bowl, we'll get to be one of the teams playing in our stadium. >> i know a huge part of the bid was setting the stage -- >> right. >> can you explain how the super bowl might be completely different than in the past? >> i think it's a testament to the 9ers' organization organization and to jed and dr. york and -- and giddeon's leadership. you will be able to go paperless and wi-fi. >> as owners what to you think sold the owners so
12:06 pm
overwhelmingly on this? >> i think it was the overwhelming support that we had from the community. again, this has not been an easy process to build a new stadium. this started back in 1997 and, you know, now you have not just the city of santa clara but the city of san francisco and you see the investment that they've made in monetary terms, in just political capital and the will power of an entire area. i think that was an overwhelming push for us. obviously, having a new stadium that's ahead of schedule in construction, you know, being in the heart of silicon valley, being in a place that has not hosted a super bowl since the 49ers won in 1985. there's a lot of things that i think were working in our favor. and, you know, hopefully we do a great job and show that california is a great place to host super bowls on a regular basis. >> i would just add that if
12:07 pm
this super bowl can show the state of california and other communities the opportunity of bringing in the fans and the business, and all we can expect from the super bowl that that will be a catalyst that stadiums can be built for oakland and for san diego, both in needs of a new stadium. and this may be the impetus to get some of those things done. >> the head of sf travel, steve van dorin, they've done an amazing job. the hotel community has come together like we've never seen before hotel rooms are set aside already and it's a testament to joe's leadership that that came about.
12:08 pm
>> jed, what do you remember about super bowl xix? >> i remember when the team came back to youngstown. i don't remember much of the game. i didn't he go. the first super bowl i want to was super bowl xxiii. >> are there any lessons that you could draw to the bay area from that? >> i don't know if there was anything directly that we looked at. but it's about that super bowl wasn't at candlestick. it was in northern california so you had some 49er supports, some san francisco support playing in palo alto. i think it's about the entire community coming together. because that's to me what sports is all about. it's about bringing an entire community together. beyond that, you look at daniel -- >> you are listening live to a press conference, that's jed york who just gave his team's 15-minute presentation to the nfl owners and successfully managed to win the bid to have
12:09 pm
santa clara host the super bowl in -- super bowl in 2016. let's go back to janine de la vega in san francisco where there's celebrating going on i'm sure. >> reporter: tori, everybody was jumping up and down. they were waving these flags. the city handed these out. they say, the tale, the team, the team. i don't think they put super bowl on it because they didn't want to be superstitious. we talked to the mayor. i want to go to him. here's what he said. >> he the elected officials, we were able to highlight everything that makes this area wonderful and unbeatable because we have the greatest stadium with the newest technology and because we'll have the great technological innovations
12:10 pm
than any other. >> reporter: how are you feeling, ma'am? >> we're so excited. we just got the 50th super bowl. we're getting a brand-new stadium and now we've got the super bowl to go with it. they don't call it faithful for nothing. >> reporter: and you've been to the numerous city council meetings. >> yeah. >> reporter: you've talked precincts. tell me how it feels after all of the efforts that you've gone too get the stadium here and now that the super bowl is coming. >> well, it was my -- my husband and i went to five and a half years of city council meetings. we talked precincts every weekend for months to get the vote out. we don't even live in santa clara. it was an important thing to get that vote out. so then groundbreaking with the stadium and now it's the super bowl! [laughter] >> reporter: again, that's been the receipt action of many of the people who are there. they have cleared into another
12:11 pm
room. there will still be a lot of celebrating going on the rest of the day. we'll have more coverage on the 5:00 and 6:00 news. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> certainly great reaction there. thank you, janine. once again, the breaking news we're just getting into you, the bay area will be hosting the golden jubilee of the super bowl coming up in 2016. we're gonna take a break. when we come back, we'll have the coverage on the aftermath of the massive destructive tornado in oklahoma. we'll be right back.
