moving well. this is a live picture. it looks good approaching the 80 split. now let's go back to the desk. high winds are being reported around the bay area and our cameras captured some of the damage that is being done already. tara moriarty is on the great highway with a look at the damages and problems being reported this morning. >> reporter: the high winds have whipped sand across the road. this happens every time we have winds here. and it was windy yesterday. the sand blew in drifts. the southbound lane is shut down this morning. up in the north bay high winds toppled a 75-foot tree which snagged wires around 9:15 last night. it happened on northern avenue in mill valley and the tree landed on top of the car. about 360 people were without power until an hour ago. public works crew had to cut the tree up to be hauled away. and then heavy limbs fell on

sacramento street. crews were busy rheumying the limbs there. no one's power was evented. if we take a live look at the san mateo bridge, we can show you some of the windy conditions. this span as well as the benicia bridge, bay, and dumbarton all under a high wind advisory. back here live you can see how high the drifts are here. usually, if you can have some sort of frame of reference, there is a light pole right to the right. usually all of this sand from about here down is usually where the curb is. you can see just how high it is here. and it's still quite windy and pretty chilly. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. we are also following breaking news out of orlando, florida this morning. fbi agents have shot and killed a friend of the boston bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev. the fbi has not released

information about the shooting but do confirm one man was killed. his friends say he is from chechnya and knew tsarnaev but say he was not involved with the bombing. >> now to our continuing coverage to the disaster in oklahoma. search and rescue efforts are coming to an end. there are no more survivors or bodies buried under the rubble. 24 people were killed including nine children. the national weather service upgraded the intensity of the tornado to an ef-5 that is the strongest possible with winds more than 200 miles an hour. >> i was praying to god so many times. i thought i'm not going to see tomorrow. >> the tornado stretched 1.3 miles wide and carved a 17-mile path of destruction. janet napolitano will tour the region and talk to local

leaders today. a tower zone took a direct hit. these before and after pictures side by side show the devastation there. some teachers are being called heros. they laid on top of students to shield them from falling debris. and lewding is a problem. coming up in 12 minutes oklahoma's plan to reduce lewding in these devastated areas. today is harvey milk day in california. the group savecalifornia.com is running radio ads calling on parents to boycott the day by keeping their children home from school. the san francisco school district says the lesson plan teaches children to reject prejudice and embrace diversity. some celebrations will be held in the bay area today. admission to the history museum in san francisco is free.

frank robin sop will speak at a reading on market street tonight. milk became the first openingly gay lawmaker in california when he won a seat on the san francisco board of supervisors in 1977. he was assassinated a year later. time is 4:33. it's quiet outside uc san francisco at this hour. in less than 90 minutes striking medical workers are expected back on the picket lines. hundreds of workers at five uc medical centers accrues the state are in the second day of a two-day strike. medical technicians, custodians, and respiratory therapists say the hospitals are over staffed. >> they have increased the patient load but not the workers. >> hospital executives say if the striking workers care so much about their patients, they

has been battling cancer for the past seven years. >> i say live life every day. >> gallagher also received the honor of riding on the zamboni machine. the red cross was also on hand collecting victims for the oklahoma tornado. >> way to go sharks. 4:36 is the time. sal, how is the the early morning commute? >> it's doing well as a matter of fact, brian and pam. we are looking at the commutes we always see at this time. you will see that traffic is wide open for you. especially on 80 coming in from vallejo. it has been a pretty nice drive and uneventful. just the way we like it. we don't want anything going on there. bay ridge toll plaza the same thing goes. we want it to be light. the trucks are backing up and doing that beep, beep thing getting rid of the cones. also the morning commute will be okay on san jose freeways. northbound 280 getting up to

highway 17. steve. >> sal? >> pretty good day yesterday for san jose sports. great day. yes. people ask me what is up with this pattern? it may last for awhile. it may even get stronger. so the stage is set for a cool seven or eight days. today and last night was all about the winds. years of experience tell me people like the wind far less than anybody else. today will be wind in spots. fairfield 44. nine o'clock synura -- 49 san rafael. if it wasn't for the breeze, there would be colder conditions. napa airport says calm and 45. i know fairfield's wicked has collapsed. but that is really cool for this time of year. sunshine and chilly lows.

good morning. it's clear. it's very cool. overnight lows. a lot of them in the 40s. windy for some. it will be sunny today. breezy to windy. highs in the 60s or very low 70s. >> thank you, steve. it's now official, the super bowl is coming to the bay area. >> super bowl 2016 has been awarded to san francisco. >> that was the joyous scene in santa clara has the nfl announced the bay area will host the super bowl in 2016. the bay area beat out miami. super bowl l will be played in the new levi stadium in santa clara. >> i was doing a check to make sure i heard it correctly. i was very excited. i'm glad to be handling out

these towels because i'm sweating et upright here. >> there is big money tied to that big game. economists estimate the super bowl will inject $100 to $400 t several big bay area companies have already committed $30 million to cover some of the costs of hosting super bowl l. as we mentioned, super bowl l will be played at santa clara but plans are already under way for big events in san francisco. market street will be transformed into super bowl village. a fan exhibit that is expected to draw big crowds. other super bowl weeks in san francisco are now in the planning stages. the last time the bay area hosted a super bowl was 28 years ago in 1985. super bowl xix was held at stanford stadium. the final score 38-16 and

montana of course named mvp. the former congressman who resigned amid a tweeting scandal is running for mayor of new york city. >> i made big mistakes and let a lot of people down but i learned some tough lessons. i'm running for mayor. >> anthony weiner made his candidacy official where he asks voters for a second chance. weiner resigned from office after graphic photos he sent to female twitter followers. we are hearing reports that the fbi identified five men in libya that may have been involved on the u.s. attack in benghazi. apparently they have them around the clock surveillance. the government has enough information to justify the u.s. military grabbing the suspects but not enough to try them in civilian court. the misery caused by the oklahoma tornado is now being

compounded by lewding. communities arrested two men suspected of ransacking storm damaged homes. they confiscated bags of stolen items. a homeowner called police when he spotted his belongings stuffed in the suspects pockets. in an attempt to reduce lewding they plan to issue homeowners a badge with their pictures on it and only people with those pictures will be allowed into the neighborhood. there is also a great show of generosity. architecture for humanity helps people rebuild. volunteers spent years rebuilding schools in haiti after the 2010 earthquake. the group's reconstruction experts are analyzing how buildings crumbled during the tornado in hopes of building them to withstand future twisters. >> everybody knows how to help respond and help frame what needs to happen next. including putting together a

reconstruction plan. that is what we focus on in the first six weeks. >> the salvation army has opened several relief centers in oklahoma. six urban specialists are there including a fremont fire captain. donations are pouring in including $1 million pledge from ktvu parent company cox enterprises and the james m. cox foundation. rail service is expected to return back to normal in connecticut today. 70 people were hurt when a commuter train went off its tracks and slammed into another train. they also had to repair some of the overhead wires and signal systems. a new clue has surfaced in the disappearance of an oakland man who took part in the bay to breakers race. they found bo's shoes and maroon football jersey at the beach. that is the same area where his phone, credit cards, and passport were also discovered

on saturday. last plus sin has not been heard from since. san francisco archbishop will lead a prayer service today for the city's latest homicide victim. it will take place on annis avenue. that is where meyers was stabbed to death last week. police arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with the case. there is still no word on a motive. the richmond city council will take legal action over the august refinery fire that sent 15,000 people to the hospital. the city council voted last night to hire a law firm if an agreement on compensation is not reached in 30 days. now the city plans to hire the same firm that represented victims of the2010 san bruno pipeline disaster. council members have not said how much they are seeking from chevron. there is a new twist in the labor dispute between concession workers at at & t park and their employer. center plate filed a federal lawsuit against the union that

represents the workers. it claims local 2 violates national labor laws. contract talks center on pay and job protection. people who live in va low hay can notify the city about potholes. officials are asking you to report potholes, burnt out street lights with an app call the see, click, fix. they can provide a gps location of the problem and up load a problem. so far 43 complaints have been reported on the site. right now it's 4:49. let's check back in with sal. any problems? >> nothing major right now. traffic does look pretty good around the bay. you can get a decent drive almost anywhere. there is road work out there being picked up. on the east shore freeway it looks pretty good. one of our earliest commutes is

this east shore commute. there is a lot of people out there but there are no fender benders on the way. toll plaza looks the same but it's backed up for a short distance. only for the cash payers. very short. if you are driving in san jose northbound 280 and 101 are off to a good start. now let's go to steve. you n seize hoofing is dive -- you can see how everything is diving down. next week could be a much different story. stronger area of low pressure will drive in. temperatures are going to stay below average here for awhile. it will be sunny for everybody. it will be breezy to windy. i think the main event was yesterday. san francisco again temperatures really struggling on the coast when you get that kind of breeze. anywhere from 20-35 miles an hour. 49 for a low. it's chilly not only along the coast but also inland locations. there is our low. it does not have a lot going for it. but 40s and 50s. 44 fairfield. any kind of breeze is holding temps up.

49 san jose. 42 walnut creek. westerly breeze for some or northerly westerly or you get a little north wind depending on that localized event. sfo, oakland west to northwest. half-moon bay says more of a northerly breeze. there is a low pretty good up there. but for us unless you're up near the oregon border. 42 in tahoe. 50 for some even out to sacramento. a chilly 53 that is a pretty impressive system for this time of year. sunny and breezy. windy for some. temperatures will stay below average for awhile. 50s and 60s and 70s. it will be sunny one of those days where it's probably nice in the sun you walk around the corner and the wind hits you. sunny and breezy. a cool pattern takes us into the weekend. >> thank you very much. time now 4:51. coming up she claimed she was

oakland was sparked over an argument by a third woman. ray quell and bobby sartain were shot multiple times. a witness testified that the girls were with 18-year-old diantay powell when he said his girlfriend was coming to join them. the witness said sartain got angry and slapped powell who began shooting. the preliminary hearing is expected to end today. she claimed two men robbed her and tried to kidnap her infant son but now police say a pleasanton woman made the whole story up. 23-year-old jennifer flores says the suspect stole her purse but detectives figured out that flores left her purse at a dominoes pizza the day she reported it stolen. police arrested flores yesterday on charges of filing a false police report. in san jose firefighters put out a grass fire that burned dangerously close to some homes.

said fire started right by highway 101 yesterday afternoon. the flames burned 100 yards from a row of homes. investigators say a man cutting grass may have accidentally sparked that fire. one san francisco supervisor is exposing extra fees to help benefit muni. scott weiner said adding a fee charge for extra tickets would help hewn know. it would pay for four light rail vehicles. it could be used to upgrade the current one. supervisor weiner is asking the city controller office to study his proposal. sal, people behaving themselves out there? >> i would say so brian and pam. good morning, to you. traffic is doing very well. i would say we have good behavior out there if you will. let's take a look at the pictures. san francisco live look at northbound 101 the james lick

freeway. approaching the 80 split. it's is a very nice looking drive. also at the bay bridge toll plaza it has been light. the workhorse of the bay area commute if you will. if you are driving in san jose all the freeways there 85 to 17 are off to a good start. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. our morning is off to a good start if you like cool weather. there is very chilly lows. everything continues to carve itself. everything being an upper level low and jet stream which has been diving into california. it's a dry pattern for us but it's cooler, windy for some. but some of the lows are very, very cool. 44 fairfield. 45 napa. 46 santa rosa. low, low 50s for some. 40s for others. and if it wasn't for the breeze, i think we would be even cooler. you can see the circulation around that low. unless you run toward seattle and portland that is where we are getting some rain. sunny today. coast bay and inland. windy coasts parts of the hills. staying cool though.
