they have been warned to be on the look out for anyone looking to borrow their phones. >> reporter: at the high school kids learn life lessons, be careful about helping strangers. >> you should be able to be safe, not worry about your phone getting stolen. >> reporter: students have been approached by two women. >> we need borrow your phone. we need to get ahold of our son. the kids are stopping and letting them use the phone and taking off after. >> reporter: the school district warned parent and students. >> three things, don't talk to strangers. number two, if they ask for your cell phone, ignore that. if you are near school go back to school. >> call 911. and the administration took an

additional step to warn kids. >> made an announcement over the campus. >> reporter: teachers also drove home the point. >> not to like give anyone our phone. >> reporter: parents are angry. >> disconcerting. >> sickens people that people  would do this to kids. they are kids. they want want to help someone else. >> reporter: they are two black women in their mid-30s on foot or car and the cars were a white car and a gold mercedes. police say this happened elsewhere. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. a former water polo coach at a high school has pleaded not guilty to charges he had sex with a minor. he was a coach on the girl's water polo team. he was arrested last month and

charged with nine meltony count. -- felony counts. he is free tonight on bail. gloria alred is taking university of california at berkeley to court over their handling of rape aldivisionigations. -- allegations. the complaint allege as hostile environment ifor women and failing to report campus crime. none of the schools have commented on that complaint. the labor fight between concession workers and their company is turning ugly. they authorized a strike earlier this month now the company has filed a lawsuit against them. that lawsuit claims the union violated the act by trying to drag the san francisco giants into negotiations. the lawsuit claims the president made remarks about

fundraisers for disabled military veterans. >> we want them back at the table but we are not going to shy away from explaining when they have bad deeds and do wrong things. >> we think this is a pr stunt. rather than service with us last night i got word of this throh worrs want the giants to take a smaller portion of their profits. they also want job security with the team if they leave at&t park. questions are raised about a aquatic center about to be built on the university of california at berkeley campus. ktvu's alex savage is live at cal with the controversy over the swim center. alex? >> reporter: this will be a state of the art training facility for cal's swimming teams but this will wipe out this parking lot where i am standing. this is where employees park their cars and many are not

happy. >> right now this is the only campus pool for competitive swimming but they will soon have a new place topractice. these are renderings of the aquatic center. >> we need more water for our swimmers, divers, water polo. >> they decided to build it on the parking lot. >> i think it is a terrible idea. >> he told me the new pool will cause big problems. >> finding a place to park or get to work will be harder. >> reporter: it will be an ideal place for the swimmers to train. and that will soon include missy franklin who joins the team next fall. private donors are picking up the tab for the construction, although she is skeptical.

>> they have been told they have full funding. we don't know whether to believe them. >> the university is promising they will not break ground till all the funding is in place. >> we are not assuming debt. nothing. completeply privately financed -- completely privately financed. >> it will get underway later on this year and be open for swimmers a year or so after that. today university spokesman said they are trying to figure out other options for employees here, other places to park their cars. live in berkeley, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. elementary school students declared their plans to head to college in a mark this afternoon through san francisco's mission district.

>> more than 250 students and families took part in the march to college. they began that 24th street bart station and walked to the city college campus. it is never too early to start thinking about a college education. >> it is critical we start to begin the conversation as early as kindergarten so college is a natural extension after high school. >> it is organized by mission graduates. they work with students in a mission district in the mission district to prepare them for college. we know the name of a man who was struck and killed in san jose monday night. the medical examiner identified the victim as david sterns of san jose. police say he was hit by a driver. the driver stopped and

cooperated but the accident remains under investigation. people concerned about safety on a san francisco street that is notorious for speeding are meeting. they want input on planned improvements. they would include crossing light wheres a teen was killed in march. she was celebrating her birthday when she was killed. the meeting is held at the san francisco zoo. and the bomb squad blew up what looked like a pipe bomb. it was found at the waste authority facility. workers were evacuated as a precaution. authorities say it ended up being just a pipe. no one was hurt. only on 2 tonight, you will recall a fire shut down a restaurant in berkeley. now she also helping her

program for school children. health and science editor john fowler shows us how the restaurant is joining forces with other restaurants to keep school gardens growing. >> reporter: crews rushing to repair the restaurant. we got an inside tour. it burned 2-1/2 months ago. the chef popularized organic food. >> we are not going anywhere. >> reporter: rebuilding ran into delays. >> when are you opening? how soon? >> reporter: june 21. a 2500 dollars per person fundraiser for a kids gardening program. >> we learn about plants and caring for some. >> reporter: there are 14 of these gardens but only one gets money from them. the rest are federally funded

governor jerry brown says when it comes to the economy what goes up must comes down and he will stay the course on spending. >> if we operate like this is a straight line it is always there, that is where we get into trouble. that is what happened before. you spend money that you think will be there and it isn't. that is why you need to pay down debts. >> theserve said california's business climate is improving but he isn't going to change his strategy. a loophole in the affordable care act could leave doctors in the lurch. it will allow people to buy insurance through a new exchange beginning january 1. they will have to only pay up

front for one month and then get a 60 day grace period before they have to pay again. they are concerned if they canceled during the two months doctors won't get paid. >> we want doctors to participate in the exchange because we want the exchange to be successful. i am concerned if the financial burdens hit doctors because doctors are on the hook for that payment from 30-90 days they won't be able to. >> officials say they are working on ways to keep people from taking advantage. security guard spotted a man in black lurking outside the same pg&e station in san jose that was hit by vandals last month. the sheriff's department says the guard saw the man about 3:00 a.m. this morning. the man ran off. you will recall someone with a rifle shot at transformers on april 16 and vandals cut lines

nearby. tomorrow we will get a look at the repairs for the 32 broken bolts on the bay bridge. there is a new report on what may have caused the bolts to snap. e-mails show the bolts were approved ck bain 2001. the suppliers recommended the same bolts for the bay bridge but the rods were subjected to higher tension there. no evidence that any of the bolts failed on the richmond bridge. the great highway remains closed after winds covered the highway with sand. it is closed to lincoln boulevard. some sand dunes are knee high. it could be days before the great highway is reopened. firefighters rushed to a fire today that came within a couple feet of a number of homes in san jose and tonight we are learning this wasn't the

first time they had to go out there. ktvu's robert handa is in san jose with the circumstances that are intriguing investigators tonight. robert? >> reporter: this san jose neighborhood had scary moments today, especially when the fire burned up to the fence line. firefighters are still putting o spots. people have reason to be concerned for their safety even after the fire has been put out. >> the smoke from the fire in san jose could be seen from the north end of town. the fire erupted around 11:00 a.m. this morning in a grassy field surrounded by homes and schools. firefighters fought through the smoke but officials called in cal fire to make water drops. >> they were real concerned. they wanted to make sure we got ahead of this thing. we didn't want ta-- want it to

jump over the creek. >> bright red flames and dark smoke. couldn't stand here for a minute or two because they had got into your nose and eyes and you got to get away. >> reporter: vealingers are determine -- investigators are determining the cause but acknowledged there have been five years in this year. neighbors believe they started in homeless encampments. >> horfiring to know they will -- horrifying to know they will do this again. >> reporter: investigators are not speculating on the cause but call the fires unusual. there were no evacuations today or injuries and firefighters will be here checking on hot spots. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news.

this isn't the first wildfire that burned close to homes in san jose. news chopper 2 was ever head on may -- was over this fire. breezy around the bay area but calmer than this morning. ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin is live in the weather center with a look at the conditions. >> 10:00 p.m. news i was showing you winds up to 50 miles per hour at the san francisco international airport. the winds died down. breezy now. live camera shot. the flag blowing. atmosphere is super clean right now. the winds make the atmosphere clean out nicely. that gives us a nice day. good air quality day. bay is browner too, that has to do with the winds. this system up here is bringing
