expect the second arrest soon. let's go back to the desk. in overnight news one man is in the hospital after his birthday celebration ended in gunfire. tara. >> reporter: officers say they were actually down at the port of oakland trying to break up drag races and side shows when they got the call of this robbery. one officer said it took longer to respond than usual because no one was patrolling the area where the shooting happened. authorities tell us he was shot in the torso after three young teenagers robbed him. the victim was walking on the sidewalk with some friends after celebrating his birthday at a nearby club. now this happened on the 1900 block of san pablo across the

street from the greyhound bus station. he stole a woman's coat with her wallet and credit cards and cash from another person. again they are only described yamerican male teenagers and detectives will be tracking the credit cards to see if they can find the suspects. they are also looking at surveillance video. we got a look at the camera and it was right above where the shooting unfolded. so that may provide important clues to detectives. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:03. new this morning less than 20 minutes ago there was another aftershock from that magnitude 5.7 quake. claudine wong is in our newsroom and you've got video showing that quake damage. >> reporter: that is right. one thing we know without a doubt that earthquake was felt from miles, hundreds of miles

away. one bay area sent me a tweet. the house creeked, the ceiling fan wiggled. another victim said she was on the 21st floor of the reno casino and she felt it. this is the view in the evergreen market in greenville. this is their security cameras. dozens of items including the wine just fell off. i just talked to the folks up there who are getting ready to open up the store. employees said things were good they were there until midnight cleaning things up. it looks like bottles of alcohol took the hit. the staff members that were in time at the time hit the door jams and stayed there until it stopped. that store should open at 7:30 this morning. check out these photos. it's about a mile from the epicenter. those look like albums.

and they sent us these photos of the quake damaging. owners said it felt quote like the end of the world. that is greenville up in the north part of your screen. all the way down to sacramento, san francisco about 200 miles away from the epicenter. this was a pretty shallow quake. just about 6.8 miles deep. looking at the usgs website. they can give us immediate feed back on when they have another shaking. within that last half hour we had four more aftershocks. that shaking according to the usgs could last for days and weeks. reporting live from the newsroom claudine wong. yesterday afternoon about three cars plunged 40 feet into the skagit river north of

seattle. rescue teams quickly responded. they were able to pull everyone safely from the icy water. reporter rick price is in washington and joins us on the phone with the developments. good morning, rick. caller: good morning, pam. good morning, everybody. this is al something to -- this is really something to see. the bridge goes on to the north for most of its span and then there is this big section that is vanished and there is a lot of debris in the river pavement and pieces of steel. we talked to the washington state department of transportation until 3:00 a.m.. they told us this will not be a quick fix. not only is it a big engineering job but the safety board is due here later today. they will join the investigation with the washington state patrol and the d.o.t. tells us they can't really begin pulling pieces of the bridge out of the river until

that investigation is complete. and then you have to look at the investigation reports and figure out what is the best way to proceed. so we are probably talking months here before the bridge is repaired and before we can put traffic back on it instead of the detour routes. >> even down here in california we are hearing about a number of bridges there in the state of washington that received just a few days ago a grade of c minus from engineers. what are they saying about that? caller: well, you know the infrastructure in washington is like infrastructure in a lot of other parts of the country. many of these bridges are old. some are what you might call an o lute type of construction. in the normal course of events they are still able to carry traffic. it's not an ideal situation. this one we're told received maybe just barely a passing

grade or just a couple of points underneath that. and would not have been necessarily at the highest priority of replacement. but the thing that they are looking at right now is there was a very large oversize load on a semi that came through and hit the bridge just before the bridge collapsed. it's up to the engineers and investigators to draw a straight line between those two events. we can't say for sure it's related but it certainly came very close in time and it was a very abrupt collapse once the truck hit the the steel structure. that is something they are are fell focusing one. rick price is on the phone with us. right near the scene of that bridge collapse. thank you for that update. just a few days ago we did our own investigation into the safety of california's bridges.

this is live. pg&e trying to get the power back on right now after an early morning crash. now the highway patrol says a driver we are zooming in now to show you what we're talking about. the driver knocked down a power pole just about 2:00 this morning. the driver was arrested there at the scene on dui charges. but that crash caused a small fire and it knocked out electricity for 200 people. we're in petaluma right now. pg&e says they will get the power back on but it probably won't be until this afternoon. we will keep watching it and bring you details as we get it. british police want to know if the two men accused of brutally murdering a british soldier acted alone. the victim 25-year-old lee

of teenager jenny lynn was found in her home. the 14-year-old girl was a promising musician and a straight a student. her family wants to keep this mysterious case in the public eye hoping someone with new information will come forward. contra costa county is softening the policy on deportations. the sheriffs office says it will no longer hand over certain illegal imgrants to federal government. this includes people's cases are dismissed or convicted of certain misdemeanors but does not apply to drunk driving or domestic violence charges. a 510-foot condo tower in san francisco is being signed off on by the planning commission. the build willing be on mission street and also the home of the mexican museum. they approved the plan yesterday despite parking concerns. between 145 and 190 condos will be built in that tower.

welcome back our time is 6:25. a fire at a funeral home leaves grieving families feeling even worse. it happened last week at the shy press lawn crematory. boxes filled with the ashes of 16 people were burned and then the water of the fire hoses soaked them and then the remains became mixed together. family members are telling the chronical it's like they are losing their loved ones all over again. the funeral home is working with the families now trying to help them recover through this grieving process. it will be a very busy home must recall day weekend at california state parks. there are almost 27,000 bookings for campgrounds. that is the most on record. campers are also staying longer than before. a few camp sites are still available. the parks department says it's a pretty good idea to try first

>> we will smile and say good morning, to you. it's friday, may 24th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. speed and alcohol are being blamed for an early morning accident in san jose. ktvu channel 2 repo j de la vega at the scene with a look at just how bad the accident was and why it could have been worse. janine. >> now that it's daylight you can see some of the damage left behind by this crash. this suv which was towed away blowed into the traffic street light. now here's what it looked like earlier this morning. police say neighbors heard a loud crash and called 911. officers found a 22-year-old woman trapped inside a black suv that had struck a light pole at the intersection of aborn and ruby in the evergreen area of san jose. it took an hour for

firefighters extricate her from the car. she was take ton the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. now that suv had t-boned into a dodge stratus traveling eastbound on aborn. the passengers in that car were conscious and talking. officers say they are going to arrest the 26-year-old female driver of that dodge for driving under the influence. >> we spoke to some owners at the scene from both of the vehicles and some of the statements from the scene appears the drinking was involved. >> both drivers? >> both vehicles, yes. >> reporter: police say they believe one of the cars ran a red light. they are still trying to determine which of those vehicles was responsible. the intersection was blocked off for a couple of hours. it happened at 2:00 a.m. but of course they are now open and traffic is flowing smoothly. police say all three people that were in both of those two cars are very fortunate to be alive just because again they believe speed was a factor. they believe both the drivers were under the influence. and again one is already in

president obama will be there in oklahoma the same day too meet with some of the survivors and families. people are now giving back to those effected by the devastating tornado in oklahoma. people in island park, new york are packing up supplies like tools, gloves, and money to help those in need. volunteers say they feel a connection with those people in oklahoma since they went through the same loss about seven months ago. time now 6:35. the city of oakland has given back millionsover dollars in redevelopment money. the state ordered the city to pay back $34.2 million. battling crime with limited amount of resources leaders from canada were in oakland yesterday trying to get some advice on how to fight crime. coming up at 6:48 what the

canadian leaders are hoping to find out from the city's police department and how they are using other california law enforcement agencies as a model for their own crime fighting plan. family members, friends, and fellow students are mourning the death of a student from a high school in walnut creek. ktvu brian flores tells us that this teenager had recently moved to the bay area from central asia. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, pam. 18-year-old amir moved to walnut creek a few years ago. his family says they just wanted a better life unfortunately this was a life just cut short a few weeks before summer vacation. now he was a junior at the high school. he was part of the school's wrestling team and actually the foothill league champion in his weight class. last tuesday he was working out at a nearby fitness club when he collapsed. he was rushed to john mure medical center. he had brain surgery shortly there after and was in the hospital for a week.

friends and family held a vigil next to him for that time as well. on tuesday he died having suffered through brain damage. that is according to a letter that was sent out by parents. his wrestling coach describes him as the glue that kept the team together and he was laid to rest on wednesday of this week. right now friends and family are planning a community memorial for him and there is a memorial for him on facebook. coming up we will tell you how the public can contribute to this fund and we'll talk to family and friends and what is no question a difficult week for them. live in walnut creek i'm brian flores. bart will run a longer test on bikes on board trains even during rush hour before making permanent changes. the bart board has had short periods of time when bikes were allowed on any time in the train cars. surveys showed an overwhelming majority of bart riders didn't think that was a problem. it will run from july 1st to

shooting. there are reports this morning eric holder personally approved a warrant authorizing the justice department, to search the e-mails of a fox news reporter. some lawmakers want an investigation of what they are calling the government's targeting of journalists. new this morning a quake felt around northern california. a terrified couple who lives near the epicenter says the initial earthquake felt like the end of the world to them. claudine wong has been monitoring the seismic activity over the past ten hours. >> things are still shaking. i did talk to the usgs this morning. they say the area has a lot of aftershocks right now. it looks like that could last awhile. we've been watching and it looks like every 15 minute there is is a quake. most of them are pretty small. i wanted to show you new video we got at the greenville market which is 200 miles north of the bay area. you can see from the security

cameras things were rocking and rolling there. while this was happening there were employees inside the store. they took cover in the door jams and once it is over the cleanup started and that lasted for a few hours after that. there was damage nothing too serious. if you look at the video you can see things falling off the shelves. that market will open as normal in just about 45 minutes. but check out these pictures from another homeowner on the east shore. it might take the homeowners cd anderson a little longer to clean up his mess. he suffered significant damage to items of his home. it looks like someone ransacked his place. anything that wasn't bolted down ended up on the pieces of art work that were destroyed. we are about 200 miles away from that epicenter. this was a pretty shallow quake. just about 6.8 miles deep. people in the bay area said they felt that shaking in antioch and san francisco.

one woman says she felt it in reno. she's at the silver legacy. anna sent me a tweet saying it was strong and lasted quite awhile. walls, windows, and floors were all creeing. in case you were wondering, the usgs says there are three types of quakes. one where the plate drops from underneath the other and one where they push against each other and one called a slide. live in the newsroom claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. russia was also rocked by a powerful earthquake overnight. it was centered off the eastern coast of russia but felt in china and other neighboring countries and in the russian capital of moscow. people ran into the streets but there are no reports of any deaths or serious damage. lawmakers from canada are turning to cities such as oakland on advice for fighting crime. some may argue that oakland isn't the best model for
