>> reporter: police say the teens stole a woman's wallet and credit cards. they are described as young african-american male teenagers. detectives are going to be tracking those credit cards to see if they can track the suspects that way. one officer said years ago, they weren't seeing these brazen types of crimes being committed by such young people. now it's a lot more

commonplace. the shooting of the paramedic a few weeks ago in the oakland hills really brought that to life. in oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. in washington state, early reports suggest that an overweight big rig struck a bridge causing it to collapse, plunging two cars into an icy river. this happened yesterday afternoon, north of seattle. check out this picture. three people in the cars were safely pulled from the river. rescue workers say no one was killed or seriously hurt. coming up at 7:15, we'll go live to washington where a federal team is expected to arrive today and investigate the collapse. 7:03. in walnut creek, family member, friends and students are mourning the death of a high school student. ktvu's brian flores is here to tell us the teen recently moved to the bay area from central asia. brian? >> reporter: hi, dave. well, the student moved here from uzbekistan just a couple

of years ago. the family said they wanted a better life. it was a life cut short just weeks before summer vacation was supposed to begin. he was a junior at the high school. he was part of two groups as well. one of them was english as a second group and the wrestling team. he was also the champion in his wrestling weight class. he was rushed to john muir medical center here in walnut creek. he was stabilized and had brain surgery. he was -- he was stabilized for a week. he died frommer repairable brain damage. his wrestling coach also describes him as the glue that kept the team together. he was then laid to rest on wednesday. right now, friends and family are planning some type of community memorial. there's also a memorial for him on facebook. we also understand that if you do want to contribute to the memorial fund, go to any chase

arrested last night at dullus airport near washington, d.c. 20-year-old kevin dahlgren was arrested when he arrived on a flight from vienna after czech police issued a warrant. dahlgren's facebook says he's from palo alto. he's accused of killing his aunt and their two sons. czech police says they sent him overseas because he was having psychological issues. drama in the skies over england. it involves a plane from pakistan. also an interstate bridge collapsed in washington state. we'll take you live to the scene. we'll find out how the drivers survived. and the company that made the bolts that failed on the bay bridge, finally talking. why they say they are not to blame. of happiness. luscious locks there's an entire land here...with living cars. now this is flying... with style.

breaking news from england. two men have just been arrested. it's in connection in a flight from pakistan. two british fire jets were scrambled hours ago and escorted the pakistan plane with 300 people on board. now, the british ministry of defense has given no details yet except to say there was some kind of incident on board that pakistan plane. reportedly, there was a security threat. the pakistan international airlines flight was on its way to manchester, england but it did land safely at an airport there was another scare in the u.k. involving a british jet. the plane was forced to make an emergency landing at heathrow after black smoke started to pour out of one of the engines. once on the ground, the 75 people on board were evacuated.

three people suffered minor injuries. british airways is investigating. the airline has canceled all of the shorter flights, at least for the time being. british police are trying to determine if the two men accused of the brutal murder of a british soldier acted alone. the victim has been identified as 25-year-old lee rigby. he was a ceremonial drummer and an afghan war veteran. the two men accused of attacking rigby were shot by police at the scene and are in the hospital. a neighbor of one of the suspects says she's shocked. >> what's been the reaction of the local community here? >> shock. >> police searched several homes yesterday and arrested a man and a woman. it's not clear yet how they may be connected to the killing. new this morning, russia says the syrian government has agreed in principle to a conference in the country's future proposed by russia and the united states. it is the first confirmation

that president assad's government would be willing to take part in talks with the opposition. the aim of the talks would be to establish the outlines of a transitional government as a way to end the fighting. but russia says that it's impossible to set the date for the conference at this point because there's no clarity about who will speak on behalf of the opposition. 7:13. we're tracking some new revelations this morning that attorney general eric holder personally signed off on the justice department searching the e-mail of a reporter. as ktvu's kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, this could lead to more problems within the obama administration. kyla? >> reporter: yes. those reports show that holder signed the warrant personally, giving the d.o.j. permission to go through the e- mails belonging to a fox news reporter. the warrant also gave the justice department permission to track james rosen's visits to the state department and his communications with his source,

steven kim. the warrant named rosen a co conspirator in a leak investigation. word that eric holder was behind the warrant came after president obama called for announcing a review into practices of the justice department. the potential problem, he put holder in charge of that. >> they will convene a group of media organizations to hear their concerns as part of that review. i directed the attorney general to report back to me by july 12th. >> this morning critics say holder has no right investigating his own actions and leaders within the republican party have said for days now that holder should resign. now, i've called the white house and holder's staff this morning. so far, no one is willing to give me any comment. i will keep you posted in my developments next hour. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. contra costa county softening the policy on deportations. the sheriff's office says it will no longer handle illegal

it will be a busy memorial day weekend at california state parks. there are almost 27,000 bookings, the highest number on record. campers are also staying longer than ever before. a few camp sites are still available. but the parks department says you can also try the first come, first served ones too. disneyland in anaheim and disney world in florida are kicking off a monster summer. these are live pictures. both parks opened at 6:00 this morning and will stay open until 6:00 this evening. thousands will enjoy the extra time to catch one more show and ride their favorite ride one

7:24. a federal team is heading to washington state today after a bridge collapse sent two cars into an icy river. it happened yesterday afternoon north of seattle. rescue teams were able to pull everyone from the water. reporter katherine barrett is at the collapsed bridge with more on what police think happened. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning to you, tori. well, the area here is -- was swarmed with some transportation engineers last night and a little bit this morning, sort of assessing out to a degree whether the rest of the bridge is gonna stay

standing. they are waiting for the ntsb to come and start a formal investigation into exactly what happened. you can see the wreckage behind me is really quite something. you have these two cars that drove off the bridge as it dropped into the river, tangled in the wreckage still. one of them is having a battery short circuit with the water. it periodically blares -- it blares its horn. you can see the cars, half submerged. the people were quite lucky to get out with their lives. they got out with relatively minor injuries. this is, of course, interstate 5, a major artery from north to south from the canadian border down to oregon and, in fact, california, and commerce, tourism and everything else will be disrupted. it could be weeks before they get this thing even temporarily repaired for traffic. tori, back to you. >> so katherine, i mean, that's certainly a big deal. this i-5, we know it well down here. what is the detour?

how long is it gonna take people to go around this bridge? >> reporter: well, there are different detours, dedepending upon whether you are northbound or southbound. i was just talking about this with my photographer here. it's not two owners but i think for all of the big trucks that go, it's gonna clog up local roads quite badly. but interestingly enough, local officials have a plan in place from the vancouver olympics. they already planned these routes for traffic due to the vancouver olympics. so customs and border control have put those in place and hope that will smooth things out for the foreseeable future. tori? >> but so 0 before -- but obviously not in time before the memorial day weekend. thank you. here in california, an investigation learned there are more than 2,000 bridges deemed struckly deficient. but caltrans says they face a

multi-billion-dollar shortfall for maintenance, repairs. we have new information about last night's earthquake, the one that was felt all across northern california. one couple living near the epicenter said it felt like the end of the world. ktvu's claudine wong is in our studio now with all of the new information. claudine? >> well, one thing we know without a doubt, this earthquake was felt from miles. dan in walnut creek, said a chair started to rock. one other viewer at the silver legacy was on the 21st floor and felt the video. this is from security cameras at the evergreen market in greenville. it was rockin' and rolling. this was when the quake hit. i did talk to the store this morning. and they said that there are actually employees in the store at the time when the quake hit. they just stood in the doorways as the bottles of wine and other groceries fell off the shelves.

they said they were there about midnight cleaning up. but the damage is pretty minor and that store should be opening right about w. >> that's the strongest i've ever felt in my life. the pool water's shaking. >> reporter: this is video posted on youtube this morning. rezs reacting to thetic -- residents roo acting to the -- reth aing to the -- reacting to the quake. he said he can't believe it was just about a 5.7. take a look at these pictures from a lodge, damage here includes mirrors falling off the walls, broken dishes. just to show you how far away this is, we're about 200 miles from the epicenter. there's greenville at the top of your screen. we've been watching the usgs website because there have been a lot of aftershocks. it looks like about every 15, 20 minutes there is an aftershock and the usgs said the aftershocks could last for

days or even for weeks. >> all right. thank you, claudine. meanwhile, russia was also rocked by a powerful earthquake overnight. it was an 8.3 magnitude. it was centered off the eastern coast of the russia but it was felt in china and other neighboring countries and the capital of moscow, which was 4400 miles away. you can see it on the map. people frantically ran in the streets. but at this point, there are no reports of any deaths or serious damage. 7:30. well, san jose firefighters say it's absolutely amazing three people survived a horrifying car crash just hours ago this morning. ktvu's janine de la vega just got some new information now. you are here with information about one of the drivers involved and charges that they may face. janine? >> reporter: dave, the driver of one of the cars was just released from the hospital and booked into jail for driving under the influence. now, the driver of the other car actually smashed into that

street light traffic pole that you see there. this is at the corner of aborn and ruby. she's still at the hospital being treated for a broken leg. you can see the force of the impact over herethe's still a gash right here and there's still a lot of broken glass and debris here on the ground. now, at 2:00 a.m., police say that black suv was traveling southbound on ruby when it broadsided a dodge stratus going eastbound on aborn. the suv crashed into a pole. the 22-year-old female driver was trapped in the car and had to be extricated by firefighters, which took about an hour. police smelled alcohol on her break and anticipate she will be arrested for dui. the driver of the other car failed a field sobriety test was and treated for minor injuries. >> whether one missed the light or had difficulty too fast, at some point they met in the intersection, kind of a of it- bone collision.

cars bounced off. the suv crashed into a pole where it came to rest there. there was a lot of damage. >> reporter: police also think one or both of the cars were speeding. this intersection was closed for two hours earlier this morning but cleared by 5:00 a.m. again, back out here live, you can still see a lot of the broken glass. this looks like some foam left over from the bumper here. fortunate that everybody survived the accident. it wasn't busy because it happened early in the morning. there's a lot of cars and stuff here traveling for the morning commute. it was lucky that more people were -- that more people were not injured. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:32. growing concern about a 19-year- old san francisco man who hasn't been seen since tuesday. now, police describe shawn city as medically fragile because of a traumatic brain injury he suffered months ago. they say tuesday morning he went to visit his former high school teacher on oak and goff street. he talked to his dad on the phone about 1:30 but they

haven't heard from him since. he's about 5'5", 120 pounds. he wears braces. he was wearing a black and gray hoodie and jeans and he had a splint on his left arm. the sheriff of kern county is defending his deputies in a controversial incident caught on video. sheriff donna youngblood says the repeated baton blows from his officers did not cause the death of a bakersfield man earlier this month. the sheriff says theon report shows 33-year-old david silva died from a heart problem. the coroner also found silva had alcohol in his system at the time of his death. police in santa rosa hope surveillance photos will help them catch three bank robbers. photos show three armed men wearing masks entering the redwood credit un afternoon on 4th street on -- union on 4th street on monday. he ordered employees to the

ground and customers and made off with an unknown amount of cash. they drove off in a vehicle and abandoned that vehicle and split off into two other cars. a new jury will have to be selected in the jodi arias murder trial in arizona. a judge declared a mistrial after jurors couldn't reach a unanimous decision on whether to sentence her to death or life in prison. the jury reportedly split 8-4 in favor of the death penalty. two weeks ago, the same juror convicted arias of stabbing her -- jury convicted air arrejust of stabbinger to -- arias of stabbing her boyfriend to death. the new trial is set for july. a san mateo county jury found that peter parineh was guilty of killing his wife to expect a $30 insurance policy. prosecutors say he shot and killed her because of massive debts. the defense maintains she

killed herself. tonight, there will be a somber ceremony in castro valley to mark a sad anniversary. the candlelight vigil and march comes 19 years after jenny lynn was found dead inside her castro valley home. police are still looking for her killer. the 14-year-old was a promising musician and a straight-a student. jenny's family wants to keep this mysterious case in the hub -- public eye hoping someone will step forward. today is the second and final day of a nurses' strike in san jose. pg&e trying to get the power back on of a -- after an early- morning crash. chp says the driver knocked down a power pole on adobe road at 2:00 this morning. the driver was arrested there and faces dui charges. that crash started a small fire and it knocked out a electricity for about 200 people. pg&e is hoping to get the power back sometime this afternoon. well, bicyclists won't be allowed to take their bikes on trains dura on b.a.r.t. until july. that's when a longer test of a more relaxed b.a.r.t. policy will begin. b.a.r.t. has conducted two shorter tests. the cyclists have always wanted the option of taking their bikes on board any b.a.r.t. train. they say most of the bikers already take extra steps to stay out of the way of the noncyclists on b.a.r.t. >> i tend to think more consciously about how much

welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. a man celebrating his birthday was shot last night. his friends were robbed. tara moriarty is live with surveillance cameras police hope will lead to evidence that will lead to the suspects. >> reporter: detectives are looking at that surveillance video to try to get a better idea who they are looking for. if you take a look behind me, you can see a camera there. this is right above where the

shooting and robbery happened. it captured the whole thing. it obviously contains very important clue us. ktvu was there early this morning when an ambulance took the victim away. this was around 12:30 in the morning. he was in critical condition, then he underwent surgery. around 4:00, we were told that he was out of surgery and recovering. authorities tell us he was shot in the torso after three teenagers robbed him. the victim was walking on the sidewalk with friends arsell -- after celebrating his birthday. this happened on the 1900 block of san pablo across the street from the greyhound bus station. police say teen stole a woman's wallet and credit cards from another person. they are described as young african-american teenagers. the detectives will be tracking the credit cards to see if they can track the suspects that way. where you officer said years ago they were not seeing these -- one officer said years ago they were not seeing these

brazen crimes being committed by such young teens but now it's becoming paramount. and that shooting of that paramedic in the oakland hills really maim to light -- came to light back to you. a man for killing a family of four in the czech republic was arrested in dull -- at the dulles airport. kevin dahlgren is accused of killing his aunt, her husband and their two sons. czech television says his parents recently sent him overseas because he was having "psychological issues." a popular walnut creek teen is being remembered after suddenly dying from a brain aneurysm. brian flores is live at las lomas high school to see how this is affecting students with just two weeks to go.

>> reporter: 18-year-old was a student here at las lomas high school. his family says they moved here just a couple of years ago from uzbekistan. they just wanted a better life. unfortunately, it was a life cut short, just weeks, as you penged, before summer -- mentioned before summer vacation. we as junior at the high school. very popular and -- he was a junior at the high school. very popular and well liked. last tuesday, on the 13th, he was reportedly working out at a nearby fitness club. his friend says at first he was okay. and then he suddenly collapsed. we don't know exactly what caused him to collapse. but his friend said he had some type of concussion beforehand and perhaps the stress of working out may have caused the aneurysm. he was rushed to john muir medical center in walnut creek where they did emergency brain surgery on. he was stable for a while. in the hospital for aing with. and then on tuesday, he died

having sufferedirrepairable brain damage. now, at the school, friends and classmates are memorializing him by writing messages in the quad area and also wearing hearts around campus with his name on it. >> just crushed. none of us can leave it. he's such a good friend, such a kind-hearted person to everybody here. he would give the shirt off his back to a stranger. it's just been a really hard week for everybody here at las lomas. >> reporter: his wrestling coach described him as the glue that kept the team together. he was laid to rest on wednesday. friends and family are planning a memorial for him. there's also a memorial for him on facebook. you can donate an account at chase bank. there is also an account there. the school here is also taking donations at the school as well. he also has a brother. his name is okmal.

he's a junior here as well. coming up, we'll try to talk to more friends and family. obviously a very tough week for many of them this morning. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. a fire at a funeral home in colma leaves grieving family members feeling e. it happened at the cypress crematory. boxes filled with the ashes of 16 people were burned from the fire and then water soaked the ashes. family members say it's like they lost their loved ones all over again. the funeral home is working with the families to help hem -- to help them through this difficult time. a driver and passenger walked away this -- away from this crash with no injuries. authorities say the car flipped over into a ditch and was leaning up against that power pole. you saw the flames inside the car. it spread to a nearby field. both the driver and the passenger, somehow escaped before the fire started.

buildings destroyed by the tornado. our reporter rene marsh is there now to show us the damage and tell us about the plans to rebuild. rene? >> reporter: that's right. you know, good morning, dave. we now know that this latest estimate that we're getting is it could cost anywhere from $2 to $5 to do this cleanup effort as well as rebuilding. when you walk around neighborhoods like this one in moore, oklahoma, you really get the sense that these folks are $ed. they don't plan -- are determined. they don't plan on going anywhere. they plan to rebuild. one example of their determination to move forward, this weekend, high school graduation ceremonies will go on as planned. the last day of school was the first time many students and teachers had seen each other since monday's deadly turned oklahoma turned plaza towers elementary into a pile of rubble. >> glad to see my friends and

races including a significantly lower speed limit. yosemite's famous half dome is opening today in just time for the memorial day weekend. this week, rangers added climbing cables and planks to the trail which climbers use to climb to the summit. usually the came go up in june. but the low summit allowed rangers to install them earlier. i did that about ten years ago. big advice you need, it's really helpful to have gloves if you are climbing using those cables, otherwise they can really chew up your hands.

groups has been suspended. in a hear, lois learner said she did nothing wrong and took the fifth and refused to answer questions. yesterday she was paid on paid leave. reportedly, she was asked to re a parking garage collapse in maryland has left one person dead. it happened yesterday at westfield montgomery mall. another person was trapped in the rubble but was rescued. at the time of the collapse, the garage was under construction, both the men who was killed and the injured men, they were construction workers. the cause of the chance is being investigated -- the cause of the collapse is being investigated. about 7:00 p.m. yesterday evening on a bridge along i-5, 60 miles north of seattle, the bridge collapsed.

there have been dozens of aftershacks after that earthquake. claudine wong has more. >> reporter: one thing wino is that this earthquake was felt for miles. it was felt all the way down here in the bay area even the epicenter is 200 miles away. we'll take you to the epicenter now. it was a 5.7. this is from security cameras of a grocery store there. i talked to this store this morning. they told me employees were there when the quake hit and stood in the doorway. there's bottles of wine and cans and other groceries off the shelves. overall, they say the damage was pretty minor. >> that's the strongest i've ever felt in the my life.

deanza boulevard. while no weapons were visible, the suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. detectives in the santa clara county sheriff's office are asking for witnesses to come forward. speed and alcohol are being blamed for an early-morning accident in san jose. it was a bad accident but ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is at the scene now to explain whit could have been a lot worse. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. well, the speed limit here along ruby avenue is 35 miles an hour. but a neighbor just stopped to tell me that people speed here all the time and go way over the speed limit. police are telling me that speed played a either in this accident -- a factor in this accident but so did alcohol. you can see the debris left over from this accident. police say neighbors heard a loud crash and called 911. officers found a 22-year-old whomp interested inside -- woman trapped inside. it took an hour for

firefighters to extricate her from the car. she was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening had t-boned into a dodge. two people in that car had minor injuries. but police arrested the 26-year- old female driver of that car for driving under the influence. >> very lucky. very easy could have had three fatalities on this accident. but like i said, they all appear to have non-life- threatening injuries. getting checked out at local hospitals. we're very, very fortunate. >> reporter: police say they believe at least one of the cars ran a red light but they are still trying to determine which vehicle was responsible. police say the female driver of the suv is from san jose and is suffering from some broken bones. she's getting blood tests taken at the hospital but they do expect to book her for driving under the influence as well. back out here live again. it looks like there's cleanup to be done out here because of all of the debris still left on

a little breezy but not nearly as windy as the past couple of days. this has been a crazy week. month, 90s, 80s. by wednesday, we had gusts to 56 miles an hour at sfo and maybe where you live as well. hopefully not that strong. it was very, very chilly this morning. still some more 30s. had some mid-30s. if by chance, you are heading up to the russian river area, as federal governmentgy in la fay -- as peggy in la fay get, it was 45 -- la fayette, it was 45. in the mountains, very, very chilly. the days won't be bad. today is a little better. but still, this low as long as it sits up there it will prevent us from warming up. i think today is the warmest over the next hour. patchy fog is about gone. it will be warmer. some areas pushing the upper 70s but the -- one of the forecast models just came in. it's much, much stronger on the rain for monday. we're not talking showers. we're talking rain.

long-lasting manufactured goods rose 3.3% in april after dropping almost 6% last month, rather, in march. that was helped by more demand for aircraft and stronger business investment. the market headed for its first weekly loss in five weeks. the dow is currently down 28. nasdaq down 12. s&p down 5. 8:44. let's bring you up to date on some of the other top stories we're following for you -- in oakland last night, a man was shot while celebrating his birthday is recovering this morning. police say he was with three friends. they were walking home after the birthday celebration. that's when at least three teenagers robbed them and shot the man. the investigation goes on. this morning, they are still investigating that bridge collapse in washington state. state troopers now say a truck that was hauling a load that was too tall hit a support beam on that bridge and caused it to partially collapse. it happened over the skagit river, north of seattle. three people were pulled out of the water with minor injuries.

and a in -- in walnut creek, family members, students are mourning the tragic death of a high school student there. ktvu's brian flores is here now to tell us the teenager had recently moved to the bay area from central asia. >> reporter: it's been a difficult week. good morning. the 18-year-old moved here to walnut creek from uzbekistan a couple of years ago. he was a student here. his family said they just wanted a better life for him. unfortunately, it was a life cut short, reportedly from a brain earner rich. he was a junior at the high school, very popular and well- liked. he was part of the english as a second language learn -- learners and he was part of the mt. diablo wrestling team and was weight champion in his class. he was reportedly working at a nearby fitness club last week. his friends say he was okay but suddenly collapsed. we don't know what caused him

to collapse. he had a concussion that he suffered beforehand and the stress from working out may have caused the aneurysm. he was rushed to john muir medical center. he was in the hospital for about a week. but then on tuesday, he had -- he died suffering through irrepairable and extensive brain damage, according to a letter sent out by parents of the principal -- sent out to parents by the principal. students are wearing hearts around their neck with his name on it. >> we're, whyed. noen of us can believe -- we're crushed. none of us can believe it. he was such a kind-hearted person. he would give the shirt off his back to a strangeger. it's just been a really hard week for everybody here at las lomas. >> i'm still kind of sad. but i'm happy he's not suffering anymore. >> reporter: now, he was laid to rest on wednesday.

life in prison. the jury was reportedly split 8- 4 in favor of death. two weeks ago the same jury convicted arias of stabbing her boyfriend to death. the retrial for the penalty phase of the case is scheduled for july. >> rain, hail, severe weather in oklahoma slowing down the recovery efforts. that's where 12,000 homes were damaged or destroyed earlier this week. 24 people were killed, including ten children. the damage is topping $2 billion. a memorial for all of the victims is now scheduled for this sunday. president obama will be in oklahoma to meet with survivors. meantime. after losing homes and cars and many other things in superstorm sandy, people are giving back to the oklahoma tornado victims. people are from island park, new york are packing up supplies like tools, gloves and money to help those who need
