they follow the process? the question is about the materials used. was a mistake made in manufacturing or was the mistake in ordering steel that just wasn't strong enough for the job? live in the studio, back to you. >> thank you. er investigators say the collapse -- investigators say the collapse of a bridge on i-5 in washington state was triggered by a truck that was too large to cross the span. the collapse sent two cars plunging into the freezing waters of the skagit river around 7:00 yesterday evening near the city of mount vernon. three people suffered injuries but are expected to survive. witnesses say the truck carrying construction equipment was too wig to fit on the bridge -- was too big to fit on the bridge. >> there was a big puff of dust. >> reporter: officials say it

will take weeks to reopen that section of interstate 5. they say a temporary structure may have to be built. here in california, a ktvu investigation learned there are more than 2,000 bridges deemed structurally deficient. but caltrans says they face a multibillion-dollar shortfall for repair, maintenance and replacement. we brought you that story last week and you can go to ktvu.com if you would like to see it again. aftershocks continue to rattle northern california this noontime after a 5.7 magnitude quake struck northeast of chico. the initial quake struck before 9:00 last night centered in greenville which is about 150 miles north of the state capital in plumas county. there were no reports of serious injuries. but there was some moderate damage. as you can see from this video, the shaking broke glass and sent items tumbling from shelves and walls. multiple aftershocks have been reported since the initial

quake including a 4.9 aftershock overnight. >> it was shaking really, really, really bad. stuff was falling off the walls and breaking and my cat ran and hid and it was quite a shaker. then we've had quite a few more after that, reallybad ones. the initial quake damaged a water tank that supplies drinking water to hundreds of homes. repairs to that water tank are now underway. with more details on the earthquake and people's reactions to it, reporter david beanek joins us live from plumas county. good afternoon, david. >> reporter: good afternoon. take a look at some of the most dramatic damage, chimneys like this. the bricks fell on the ground and some of them are quite heavy and some of them were thrown some 50 feet away in the middle of the street. fortunately, so far, there's been no word of anybody hurt. surveillance video at the

street when he made a turn and ran into the back of the truck. they say mitchell was not wearing a helmet. family and friends of a walnut creek teen are struggling with grief and shock after a young man died af sudden brain aneurysm. brian flores is at the teen's high school where plans are underway to member memorialize the team's wrestling star. >> reporter: good afternoon. they just moved from uzbekistan a couple of years ago in search for a better life. unfortunately, his wife was cut short doing what he enjoyed doing every day. >> we're trying to keep his memory with us in this time of need. >> reporter: instead of having lunch or hanging out with him, this teen is left memorializing him. >> just crushed. none of us can believe it. he was such a good friend, such

a kind-hearted person to everybody here. he would give the shirt off his back. >> reporter: last tuesday, the teen was working out at a nearby gym. things were fine until he unexpectedly collapsed. he was quickly rushed to john muir medical center in walnut creek where they performed emergency brain surgery. he was stable for a week until tuesday, when word got around that he was not going to make it because the massive bleeding 0 on the brain -- bleeding on the brain. >> i was shocked. i bet his family has the worse pain than me. >> reporter: friends say he might have hit his head before he went to the gym and got some type of concussion. whether that played a role, we don't know. what we do know is that he was well-liked. it was hard for them anyway. >> it's hard because it's the end of the year, we have finals coming up. with the limited life

caused a woman to crash her truck into a backyard this morning. it happened just before 9:00 near san vicente drive. officers say the woman pulled her pickup to the side of the road and sped across all lanes of traffic. they said she then drove up an embankment and plowed through a fence into someone's backyard. police say it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were involved but that the woman may have had a medical problem. an end and a beginning in more health official today -- in moo -- in moore, oklahoma today. it was the end of the school year today as people mourned seven people killed in plaza towers elementary during monday's tornado. as craig boswell reports, it's also the beginning of cleanup and rebuilding. >> reporter: as more and more equipment arrives to remove the mounds of debris, decisions are being made how to rebuild and rebound. it's a slow and steady cleanup

just left his own birthday party and was walking on sab pablo avenue near 20th street when the three teens robbed him. police say cameras at a nearby apartment complex may have captured footage of the attack. the teens are also suspected of robbing a woman of her wallet and credit cards. the man who was shot is expected to survive. a woman accused of kidnapping her grand mare from a home in eastern contra costa county two years ago has just been sentenced two hours ago, ericka gallego was sentenced to eight years in prison. the 60-year-old woman pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges as part of an agreement with prosecutors. back in may of 2011. she took a cab from southern california to her son's home in niceton, grabbed her granddaughter and took the baby by cab back to the bay area. >> really happy with the sentence she got. i know that was the max based on what they negotiated.

and just nice to know that she's gonna be away for a while. >> the grandmother did not speak at this morning's sentencing. but she did give the court a written statement. no word what was in that statement. fewer californians are hitting the road this memorial day weekend. that's according to aaa. the organization predicts about 4 million californians are planning to travel 50 miles or more during the three-day weekend. that represents a 2% decrease from last year. a few people we talked to in the south bay this morning said high gas prices are keeping them home this weekend. >> staying home, can't afford to go anywhere. gas prices still up there. this is my plan. my holiday. >> the aaa survey found that gas prices would not great impact memorial day travel plans for most california ups. those surveyed said they would

offset the high gas cost by conserving in other areas. the number of californians traveling by air this memorial day weekend is expected to stay about the same as last year. 349,000 state residents are flying to their destinations this weekend. that figure reflects a 12% decrease from 2012. it will be a busy memorial day weekend at california state parks. there are almost 27,000 bookings for camp grounds of that's the highest campgrounds. that's the highest number on record. the park department says it's a good idea to try first come, first served camp sites. there's still availability. and the weather pattern this weekend for all of the outdoor festivities will be cooling off. we'll have more clouds to the forecast as well. and possibly, possibly a few showers. here is our live camera. nothing but clear skies.
