on. >> reporter: it was a pretty intense man hunt out here for a couple of hours. officers searched the apartment but at some point they assume that the fourth suspect had slipped away, gotten out of the two-block perimeter and out of the area. so they have now called off that search. he is described though as a hispanic man about 20 years old, 5'8", 180 pounds with a distinctive high crew cut hair style. debra villalon. we have a better picture of what caused a bring to collapse. investigators have determined a truck car rig some sort of drilling equipment hit an overhead bridge support. three cars within another bridge when it went down in the skagit river. the bridge is located 60 miles north of seethe approximately.

>> fortunately i'm extremely fortunate that nobody died as a result of this. we were fortunate it happened later in the day. but the impact on this for washington state and the people that live in this area, commerce on the west coast is going to be pretty significantly impacted because this is the major interstate roadway. >> the state's transportation secretary says the bridge was inspected and repaired last year. engineers are working on a temporary replacement. the bridge that collapsed has a design similar to the eastern span of the bay bridge, which hundreds of thousands of drivers use every single day. live to explain why it's considered functionally obsolete but still safe. >> reporter: that's right. the bridge that collapsed in washington state yesterday does have some similar counterparts in the bay area, including what you're looking at right now.

the old eastern span. the bridge is a true truss bridge. rated safe but functionally obsolete. >> is that something to be worried about? >> not necessarily. >> reporter: jay an engineer specializing in bridge collapses says about 10% of california's bridges are functionally obsolete. >> not necessarily a safety issue. doesn't have the width and height to be up to the code and standards. >> reporter: in the bay area the old eastbound span of the bay bridge and the eastbound span of the carcinas bridge are threw truss desins. >> these will be older bridges that were designed for different vehicles. small ravishings and lighter vehicles. >> reporter: cal trans says the majority of the state's functionally obsolete bridges are safe for drivers. >> what that means is that if

it were -- if we were to build a new one today in that same location it would look very different. >> reporter: the agency performs inspections every two years to decide which bridges to repair or replace. >> age of the bridge, the amount of traffic it has to handle, its location, how close it is to the salty air or salt water. >> reporter: coming up at 6, the potential problem that cal trans is looking at on state bridges in the wake of yesterday's bridge collapse. reporting live, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. firefighters held the line on a grass fire today. the two alarm fire was reported about 11:45 near the intersection of highway 4 and i- 80. you can see from these pictures shot by news chopper 2 that the fire burned very close to a row of houses. it spread to three acres before

crews were able to bring it under control. the fire damaged some context and fences, but no buildings were burned. we know the name of the man who died on his bike in san francisco. family of dylan mitchell says he had just moved to san francisco two weeks ago. mitchell collided with the rear end of a garbage truck early yesterday. investigators say mitchell was not wearing a helmet and that he died at the scene. just 90 minutes from now a vigil is scheduled to begin marking the 19th an verse of an unsolved ill killing. jenny lin was found stabbed to death. tonight lin's parents are holding a balloon release and a candle light walk as they have done every year since her death. in 2006 sheriff's officials identified a suspect in the case. a convicted killer already serving a life sentence. there was a lack of evidence

tying him to the case. police are reviewing surveillance footage in hopes it could help them catch three teens. investigators say the man had left his birthday party and was walking when the three teens robbed him. police say cameras at a nearby apartment complex may have captured footage of the attack. the teens are suspected of robbing a woman. the man who was shot is expected to survive. people in northern california are still talking about that big jolt that gave them quite a scare. about 8:45 last night there was an earthquake measuring 5.7. it was centered near greenville but was felt as far away as san francisco. live from the area, a lot of people say they've never felt an earthquake like this one. >> reporter: including people who have transplanted from the bay area. you see one of the chimneys damaged, the blocks from that

chimney fell off and damaged the roof. blocks not only fell, they flew up to 50 feet away. nobody has been hurt yet. the shaking has yet to stop. >> it happens at like -- >> reporter: surveillance video at every green market shows the manager sweeping up when the shelves start to shake, bottles and cans fall and smash and the plights flash and flicker. >> i ran in the back room looking for my coworker. we got under a door jam and waited it out. >> reporter: three miles from the epicenter of the earthquake, before they felt the shaking they heard what first sounded like explosions. >> we'd hear a boom boom boom. you'd start shaking. >> reporter: the pipe coming out of a water lank at the lake almanor resort cracked and gushed. >> that's the strongest i've ever felt up here. usually it's small, little, you can feel the jolt once in a while. that was unique for our area. >> reporter: cups and dishes are shattered in some homes. pictures and mirrors fell off

the walls. at least 4 fireplace chimneys on the lake almanor peninsula are damaged or destroyed. >> i jumped up screaming. we hugged each other. we almost got hit by a mirror. our cat is still traumatized. he won't come out from under the bed. >> reporter: aftershocks have left people here on edge and many can't help but keep an eye on a volcano that last erupted 98 years o. >> i'm not a geologist. it's something to worry about. >> reporter: tonight the county has declared a state of emergency and is still assessing the damage. many of the homes in this area are vacation and weekend homes. many people may not realize they have damage until they get up here for the memorial day weekend. we saw the beautiful picture of mount lasson. one of north america's most dangerous volcanoes.

our health and science editor john fowler is here with why scientists sent an alert to the national park. it erupted less than a century ago. it's still an active volcano and of some concern tonight. lasson peak -- 30 miles of faults connect the area to the 5.7. >> this is the largest earthquake we've ever recorded in this area. >> reporter: scientists are asking park rangers to keep an eye on hot springs, sulfur pools and steam vents because of continuing seismic shocks. >> they can destabilize them. busy weekend. a lot of visitors. >> reporter: for about three years beginning in 1914, lasson erupted explosively. ash clouds. since last night's quake, no unusual volcanic activity. >> we have alarms. if we start to see increased

levels. >> reporter: a line of faults runs from lake tahoe to lake almanor where the quakes are centered, then on to lasson. scientists still haven't identified the exact fault. they're swamped with so many aftershocks. >> it'll take us a few days to come up with a better image of what fault it's on. >> reporter: it's possible maybe even likely the quakes are not on any named fault. the area is riddled with faults, many of them unknown. reporting live, health and science editor, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. one driver is facing dui charges, a second driver could be facing similar charges after a two-vehicle collision. police say they're trying to determine which of the two vehicles ran a red light around 2:20 a.m. a black suv t-boned a dodge stratus and then hit a pole. took fire crews an hour to get the driver out of the suv. the driver of the dodge has been charged with dui.

police are considering similar charges for the suv driver. a man from palo alto is in central custody, accused of killing a family of four. the fbi arrested kevin dahlgren when his flight landed last night. police say he killed his aunt and uncle and their two sons. czech authorities issued an international warrant for his arrest. a holiday like no other. we found out what the state of the state park system is. new at 5:30, the record that is going to be set this memorial weekend. memorial day weekend is usually the biggest visitor weekend. some of the spectacular reasons why as well as the attractions. back here in 10 minutes. holiday weekend forecast. there's some rain in the forecast. i'll break that down.

livermore police know what caused a woman to crash her truck into a backyard today. this happened just before 9 this morning. officers say the woman pulled her pickup to the side of the road, then sped across all lanes of traffic. her truck then went up and embankment and plow through a fence into someone's backyard. police say the woman had some type of medical problem and she'll not be facing any charges. she was not injured. visitors to yosemite national park are among the first to experience a new addition. robert handa went to see for himself. he's live with how the change is expected to make a daring climb safer. >> reporter: this holiday weekend is traditionally the busiest time of year for the park. there are a lot of reasons why. first of all, we're up on glacier point road. a road that goes through a lot

of temporary closures. it's open right now. so are virtually all of the maiming roads. the scenery is spectacular. this time of year is the peak for water falls when you get plenty of flow from the melted snow. as i mentioned, the pleasant temperatures, even if they run a bit hot are nowhere near the intense heat visitors endure during the summer months. rangers officially opened up half dome to hikers after workers installed the last of the handrails last night. >> very important. it's iconic. it's one of the highest peeks out here. not many people know. just about anybody can climb it. you need to be a rock climber. really experienced. but if you're in relatively good shape and not afraid of heights, just about anybody can try their luck on half dome. >> people come here to climb half dome. that's what they want to do. they plan for a year in advance

and get reservations, pay their fees and head on up. >> reporter: and rangers have told me this summer will be a good chance to wipe out a lot of bad memories from last summer. about a year ago when a number of park visitors came down with a virus. that led to several deaths and numerous changes in park policy. more on some changes and tips with dealing with the holiday rush. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a federal grand jury has indicted an oakland man on charges he stole a gold jewelry box and artwork. andre franklin is charged with stealing art work. they also say he took the jewelry box in early january. the indictment put its value at more than $100,000. he could face 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. target and 16 other

retailers are suing visa and mastercard over credit card and debit card fees. in a federal court complaint filed, the retailers allege the companies are setting rates too high. target dropped out of a more than $7 billion settlement of a similar case because they said it gave visa and mastercard too much freedom. stocks were virtually unchanged today. yahoo has reportedly joined a long list of buyers interesting in buying hulu. yahoo is throwing its hat into the ring along with disney, time warner and direct tv in submitting a formal proposal. yahoo announced it is buying tumblr for $1.1 billion. a bill aimed at cleaning up california's oceans has died in

the state assembly without a vote. manufactures co only up with ways to keep plastic out of state waterways. the chambers committee failed to act. the bill would have required manufacturers to find ways to reduce 95% of plastic pollution by the year 2024. violators would face financial penalties. in oklahoma, the hard work of rebuilding is just beginning as state officials say more than 14,000 insurance claims are now pending following that devastating tornado. this comes at about 300 mourners attended funeral services for one of the young victims. 8-year-old kyle davis. today was the last day of school for plaza towers elementary school when was badly damaged by the twister. with their own school in ruins, parents, teachers and students met at another nearby school. >> i found out that his teacher was shielding him and she was on top of him and the cinder

were made by a 130-year-old company out of ohio. that has until now stayed silent. >> our position was to support our customer and work together. the dyson corporation is an ethical company. our values and customer relationships will not be compromised. >> reporter: brian says he didn't want to talk until after the investigation was done. the 55 page report was submitted two weeks ago. now through this video posted on a pr site, he is defending his company and the bolt. but listen closely to how he does it. >> through this report and mutual internal investigations it was concluded that the dyson corporation met its requirements on filling this order. >> reporter: he says fulfilling this order to the specifications requested. testing showed the rods comply with basic mechanical and

chemical requirements. while it goes on to say the condition of the steel is found to be less than ideal and made the rod suggestion septemberable to failure, their position appears to be that cal tran got what it ordered and may have file failed to order the right type of steel. as a result of the report an upgraded standard has been recommended for manufacturing replacement anchor bolts. in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. pg&e says power is back for all people affected when a car crashed into a power pole near petaluma. it happened at 1:45 this morning near manner lane. officers say 23-year-old ann tone brazil is facing dui charges. his car ran off the road and hit a transformer. students at a high school in contra costa county are

thousands of sleeping bags and lots of smores this weekend at california state parks. the parks system is seeing the highest number of overnight camp site bookings in history this weekend. this record weekend means some people aren't such happy campers. tom vacar spent the day at several state parks. tom is live with how the crush of visitors has actually forced some people out sooner than they'd like to go. >> reporter: indeed. if you're thinking about going

abducted the child, and then took her back to los angeles. again, in a cab. >> really happy with the sentence that she got. i know that was the max based on what theynegotiated. just nice to know that she's going to be away for a while. >> she did not speak during her sentencing this morning. a former millionaire from woodside will spend the rest of his life behind bars. a jury found peter paranei guilty of killing his wife and attempting to make it look like a suicide. investigators say he was in debt and murdered his wife inside their home in woodside in 2010. they say he wanted to collect $30 million in life insurance. he will be formally sentenced on july 12th. the city of oakland has been order to return millions of dollars. they sold 8 properties to its

redevelopment agency. those transactions move more than $32 million into city coffers. state auditors said that move was not per misst missable. the money was returned yesterday. the city has the option to challenge the ruling in court. we've heard over and over about how long it takes the department of veterans apair facing duis to process claims. in some cases the wait has been up to two years here in the bay area. rob roth tells us there are finally some changes that should help lower that wait. >> reporter: right. here's san francisco's city college. more than 1300 student veterans have access to a new resource center. some veterans say after returning from war, getting those services can be difficult. this man is a veteran of the war in iraq. he says when he came home he enrolled in school but dropped out because the va was too

slow. >> i was waiting for my benefits to come through to help pay, it was falling through the cracks over and over. so eventually i couldn't afford to pay for my tuition any further and i had to withdraw from school. >> reporter: the department of veterans affairs contends it's made improvements in processing claims. this is the oakland regional office where some claims have languished for two years. last may we reported on a community meeting where hub hundreds of veterans spoke. officials say thanks to a new computer system, they have reduced the backlog by almost 20%. >> we're moving from this 19th century paper-based system to a 21st century system. >> reporter: this large stack of papers is one claim. it's being scanned into the system and officials say once it's into the computer, the processing will go much faster. nationally the backlog is still well over half a million claims. president barack obama has vowed to have it cleared out by
