>> good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, may 25. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. rosemary is off today, but mark tamayo is nice enough to spend his morning with us. >> there is a chill out there. might wake you up this saturday morning. temperatures starting out the day in the 40s, lower 50s. santa rosa, 45 degrees, oakland 52, and san jose reporting partly cloudy skies and the readings in the upper 40s. the forecast today, patchy fog and cool temperatures this morning. mid 40s to the mid 50s. this afternoon, partly to mostly sunny. temperatures on track, not a big change from yesterday. 60s to the low to mid 70s for this afternoon. coming up, the one direction temperatures will be heading this holiday weekend and we'll break down shower chances for memorial day. in just a few hours, a search will get under way for an emeryville man who disappeared after last sunday's beta breakers race. alex savidge is live with the

call for help from family and friends of that missing man. alex. >> reporter: and good morning. a short time ago i spoke with bo rasmussen's father. he said he is moved by the outpouring of support from this entire community that the family is seeing and will see it later today. they're expecting as many as 200 people will take part in this search. that means friends, relatives, coworkers, all taking part. this is where that search will be coordinated from. this is the gym. bedford hall at st. grab reel church in san francisco. everyone will be meeting here two hours from now. obviously they are already getting set up here. they will continue to search for rasmussen, who disappeared after last weekend's beta breakers race. the family has set up a facebook page trying to help find him and today searchers will be heading out to golden gate park and the surrounding neighborhoods and also near ocean beach where rasmussen's clothing was found near the water. some believe he may have gone

swimming in the ocean. the 27-year-old was last seen on sunday. he just finished walking the beta breakers when he said goodbye to his friends and headed towards the ocean. a short time ago i asked rasmussen's father what he believes happened to his son. >> i go back and forth between these amazing scenarios, where he got knocked in the head and we'll find him in the park buried under leaves. and still alive, to you know, the horrible feeling that hey, my son drowned. >> reporter: now rasmussen's credit cards and phone were discovered near the beach chalet restaurant. his loved ones checked hospitals and jails but no sign of rasmussen. they aren't giving up hope, though. again volunteers will be meeting here. anyone who wants to take part in this search can come down to st. gabriel church in san francisco at 9:00 this morning. everyone is meeting here inside of bedford hall and volunteers plan to search throughout the day today until sun set. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu

channel 2 news. firefighters are at the scene of a house fire in san jose. the fire department posted these photos of that fire on its twitter page. the first emergency call came in just before 4:30 this morning at that home which is on kimber view court near the country club. crews knocked down the fire a half hour later. five people, including a child, lived inside that and may be now finding a new place to live. one person was treated for minor injuries at the scene. no word on a cause. investigators are reviewing surveillance video looking for clues following a robbery at livermore's premium outlets. thieves targeted the true religion jeans store on thursday around 4 p.m. police say a group of 10 people rushed inside and overwhelmed the clerks. they grabbed several pairs of designer jeans worth about $5000. police say the thieves could be part of a crime ring operating throughout the bay area. >> they're hitting all the true religions, like sacks they stole their true religion jeans.

>> police say witnesses told them again there were 10 thieves, four men, six women in their 20s. they had get-away cars waiting in the parking lot. a red 19 80s toyota corolla and a similar car similar to a ford taurus. a san francisco state basketball charge is facing charges for the killing of a rapper near atlanta. 25 desensa white will appear in a georgia courtroom next friday. he was arrested in redwood city and extradited last week. investigators say he is one of five people charged with the shooting death of a 19-year-old rap artist known as little fat last june. white first played at texas tech and roomed with current 49er wide receiver michael crabtree before transferring to santa clara university. he played his senior season at san francisco state this year. a former high school football coach in the east bay is behind bars on $21 million bail. 51-year-old baron edwards is in the contra costa county jail. he faces nearly two dozen counts of sexually abusing children, many under the age of 10.

edwards coached football at kennedy high school in richmond in 2004 and 2005. ktvu interviewed edwards in 2004 about how the grade point requirements made it difficult for students from richmond to get accepted. >> it hurts a lot of our kids. you know, most of our kids are floating around a 2.5 or 6 average here. we have been problems with our test scores lately but we're working on those. ktvu has also learned that edwards is a musician. we found this youtube video of him performing. investigators are still compiling evidence against him. they will not say when or where the alleged molestation occurred. in washington state the bridge collapsed along interstate 5 is causing traffic delays for drivers this holiday weekend. detours are in place but travelers are being warned to expect major backups. three people were hurt when a 160-foot section of the bridge collapsed on thursday. the bridge is a main corridor from canada to california, and

some businesses say they are bracing for impact of its closure. >> we supply a lot of oversized shipments and this is our main route right here. that's going to put a big hamper on us. and a lot of the businesses around here that people aren't even going to want to go into, because of the nightmare traffic to get into it. >> a report released yesterday shows officials with the state's department of transportation performed a special inspection just six months ago on the bridge because there were signs that it had been hit by a different vehicle. inspectors say they found tear and other problems including vegetation growing in panels and rust. president obama is commemorating memorial day by honoring the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. >> they are heroes. each and every one. they gave america the most precious thing they had. the last full measure of devotion. >> in this morning's weekly address, the president says

good saturday morning. over the break we have been choreographing this beautiful live shot towards the bay bridge and the beautiful colors over san francisco bay. temperatures cool this morning in the 40s and 50s. before this week, high school seniors in moore, oklahoma had been looking forward to this day for years. but it is a bitter sweet day for them in the wake of monday's deadly tornado. as custom, moore's three high schools will hold their graduation ceremony today at a convention center in oklahoma city. this is the first time since the storm that large groups of people from moore have gathered in a formal setting.

an elementary school teacher who was buried under the rubble talked publicly for the first time from her hospital bed. >> i don't want to get emotional, but hell crashing down, and we just started to hear glass break. kids are screaming, teachers are screaming. >> the tornado killed 24 people including 10 children. right now there are six people in the hospital with one child in critical condition. president obama will visit the area tomorrow and monday, talking to survivors and first responders. police say a growing problem in moore is now looting. officers are currently reopening neighborhoods flattened by the tornado. residents being allowed back during the day to see if they can recover any belongings. officers close off the areas at night but looters are still finding ways to sneak into the area. >> i work two jobs to get what i've got. they can work two jobs and get their stuff, too, just like i've had to.

they can keep their hands off of other people's things. >> officers say looters are targeting yards with scrap metal, so far, at least two people have been arrested. meanwhile, a local group is making superhero capes to send to children affected by oklahoma's recent tornadoes. kiss the toas creations in danville is holding a sewing event at the danville women's club. they hope to make 100 capes. this is not the first time they've done this. in 2008 volunteers gave more than 1200 capes to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses and disabilities. the group says when children put on the capes their spirits are lifted. and nike says it will do its part to help the victims of the oklahoma tornadoes. its donating $1 million in clothing and the company is working with oklahoma city thunder's kevin durant to donate profits from his shoe line. the money donate willed come from sales of his shoes on nike.com from now through june 15. and blake shelton, country music star, leading a benefit

concert and telethon to raise money for the tornado victims. shelton who was born and raised in oklahoma will be joined by his wife and other country music stars. the event will be televised from an oklahoma city arena on may 29. the jersey shore is back in business just in time for memorial day. chris christie is spending the holiday weekend getting the word out. he is hoping to boost tourism and business by urging people to visit the board walks with their families. seven months ago superstorm sandy slammed right into the shore causing billions in damage. >> i think the shore is finally back. we had a lot of devastation back here. the town of point pleasant beach did a great job of cleaning the whole place up. >> president obama will visit the jersey shore on tuesday for a firsthand look at the progress that has been made. he is also expected to meet with business and homeowners who were helped during the recovery efforts. the new york acquarium is set to partially reopen today. it's the first time visitors are being welcomed back since

superstorm sandy flooded tanks and caused power failures. acquarium officials say exhibits featuring wall russs, harbor seals and sea lions will be open but the back half of the acquarium is closed for repairs until 2016. new this morning, authorities in the u.k. are questioning the friend of a suspect in the killing of a british soldier. the friend was arrested last night following an interview with the b.b.c. in the interview, he says suspect michael ada bulado had changed after visiting kenya. he claimed he was physically and sexually abused during that visit. two men are accused of killing 25-year-old lee rigby. both suspects remain in the hospital after being shot by police. the swedish capital of stockholm was hit by violent riots for the sixth night in a row. angry mobs set fire to more than 100 cars since that violence began. they vandalized schools and threw rocks at police and firefighters. the protest began over the death of a 69-year-old man who

was shot by police earlier this month. police have called in reinforcements. the u.s. government is urging american citizens to stay out of the area. >> and we're waiting for new video of secretary john kerry in africa today. he is in ethiopia addressing the issue of islamic extremists and this is video that was taken thursday during his meeting with the israeli president in jerusalem. this morning, kerry is attending the african union's 50th anniversary. he blames islamic radicals for much of the violence happening in nigeria and sudan. in upstate new york, a search continues for a pilot following a crash involving a volunteer angel flight. the bodies of two passengers were recovered from a wooded area near the crash site but authorities say much of the wreckage is sub merged in a pond that's where divers are focusing their serge right now for that pilot. angel flight is a nonprofit group that arranges free air transportation for sick patients. the cause of the crash is unknown. the family of a cyclist killed in san francisco's

mission district says he had just recently moved to the city. 21-year-old dillan mitchell died on thursday after colliding with a garbage truck at 16th street and south n avenue. investigators say he wasn't wearing a helmet d was traveling at a high rate of speed. he moved to the city from clayton just last week to start an apprenticeship as an electrician a santa cruz county man is in jail after police found dozens of firearms in his home. yesterday police served a search warrant at the mobile home in unincorporated santa cruz county. they arrested 54-year-old nicholas yukich who police say was plotting to commit grand theft. investigators found 48 assault rifles, shotguns and handguns in the home, and also found high capacity magazines and more than 50,000 rounds of ammunition. californians are now learning the price of health insurance under obamacare. people who don't receive or cannot afford insurance through their jobs can buy coverage through an exchange at a group rate negotiated by state regulators.

[ music ] well, san francisco's 35th annual carnivale festival has arrived. the event which celebrates the kilter of latin america and the caribbean almost didn't happen. three months ago organizers said there just wasn't enough money or people to put the event together. but with if help of 500 volunteers and more than $400,000 in donations, that two- day block party was saved. in honor of memorial day weekend, great america is offering free admission to those in the armed forces. the event is called military days and it provides free entry for active or retired service members. the park is also offering a special discount for up to six

search. they are hoping to find answer in the disappearance of 27-year- old beau rasmussen. he vanished last is under after finishing the beta breakers. friends said he told them he was going to ocean beach. some believe he may have gone swimming in the ocean. we talked to beau's father this morning. >> the foundation came in and helped us put everything together, and we've organized a search that we'll work in grid patterns, and we're going to cover a lot of ground today. >> the family is asking for any photos or video from the beach after the race to help them focus on their search. coming up at 8:00, we will go back to san francisco for a live report on how people are reaching to rasmussen's family. vallejo police are getting much-needed help from nearby law enforcement. operation good will began 10 days ago. agencies including the solano county sheriff's office, the probation department and the highway patrol are going to help vallejo police patrol city streets for the next month. high-crime areas are going to be saturated with the

additional officers. this morning police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection to a string of cell phone robberies in sonoma county. sheriff deputies say four men posed as customers at a cell phone store in windsor. they allegedly snapped phones off a display and drove away with $3000 worth of merchandise. police chased them onto highway 101 and speeds topped 100 miles an hour. the suspects scattered into a petaluma neighborhood causing an elementary school to go into lock down. >> i went out and calmed them down, let them know what was happening and that their students were safe inside of a locked multipurpose room. >> police eventually arrested three men, but one did get away. investigators believe the suspects also robbed a mill valley at&t store on tuesday. an east bay banker accused of stealing more than a million dollars from her long-time clients says she is not guilty. linda foss charged with 20 counts, including embezzlement. she entered her not guilty plea yesterday in alameda county

superior court. cameras were not allowed inside the proceeding but one of her alleged victims was there. julie haberger says foss stole more than $40,000 from her and more than $600,000 from her mother-in-law. >> her husband, my father-in- law worked very hard for his money because he wanted to provide her with all that security. so i -- i am angry today. >> linda foss remains in jail. bail was set at 1.6 million. her next court appearance is june 27. the city of san bruno says it will not let pg&e off the hook for the damage caused by the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. the city released a statement after learning pg&e is fighting a record 2.25 billion dollar fine proposed by state regulators. in a filing, pg&e says it has accepted full responsibility for the blast which killed eight people and seriously injured many more. put pg&e calls the fine excess and i have says its shareholders are already paying 2.2 billion dollars in system

upgrades and improvements. about 300 people in northeastern california have been ordered to boil their water because of damage from thursday night's earthquake. that magnitude 5.7 quake was centered near the community of greenville which is about 230 miles northeast of san francisco. the earthquake ruptured a tank that supplies drinking water to residents. so they'll have to boil their water until further notice. it was the strongest quake to hit the mostly wilderness region since 19 34s and size meteorologists are predicting there will be dozens of after shocks in the next weeks. because that area is not closely monitored by scientists, park rangers are being asked to keep a lookout this holiday weekend. the seismic shocks could destablize local hot springs, sulfur pools and steam vents. they haven't been able to identify the fault line that triggered the quake. >> it's possible we will never determine the name of the fault, because unless it's mapped at the surface and a geologist has assigned a name to it, there's no name for the fault.

>> the region from lake tahoe north through the sierra to lake elmanor are riddled with unnamed and unknowned faults. size meteorologists are looking for people to help them track local earthquakes. the united states geological survey has put up a help wanted sign. they want to install about 30 seismic sensors in homes and businesses throughout the pleasanton, dublin and san ramon area. the sensors detect seismic waves from major quakes to minor1, less than a magnitude 2.0. the national park service is announcing there will be no more furloughs. as of june 1 u.s. park police won't be forced to take unpaid days off. the furloughs were a femme prayer solution to budget cuts but the park service says it's able to offset those cuts. park service officials say despite staffing shortages through memorial day, security will not be compromised. with thousands of visitors expected through memorial day yosemite mite has reopened access to half dome. memorial day weekend is often

the busiest time of year for yosemite national park. with water surging from the melting snow, they say it makes summer feel closer. workers installed the last of heavy cable hand rails on thursday night. >> it's iconic. it's one of the highest peaks out here, and not many people know. just about anybody ask come out and climb it. >> rangers say they are anxious to replace bad memories from last summer's hantavirus scare. the virus caused by infected deermice killed several people who stayed at curry village and made seven others ill. the signature cabins have since gun replaced but rangers say at this point, the biggest worry is the holiday crowd. >> and cal fire is warning people to be careful this weekend with increased danger for wildfires. officials say with one of the dryest winters on record, conditions for wildfires are prime. in an average year, by late may cal fire responds to about 850 wildfires. this year they've already responded to nearly 1600. they are warning people to be

mindful of water safety. with temperatures up and snow melting water ways are running high. if you are heading to the russian river this memorial day weekend. expect big crowds and an increase in deputies patrolling area. to cut down on litter and drinking, the sheriff's office and chp are beefing up patrols. in the past couple of years officers have seen a spike in the number of people heading to the russian river. they say partly due to the organization of holiday parties on social media sites. law informat agencies also plan to crack down on drunk drivers this weekend. several d.u.i. checkpoints will be set up throughout the bay area. last year chp says 25 people were killed on california roadways during the memorial day weekend. it says about 60% of those who died were not wearing their seat belts. more than 1300 people were also arrested last year for driving under the influence. more people are expected to hit the road this memorial day weekend, because of lower gas prices. according to aaa, gas prices had fall then many areas prior to the holiday weekend and

good saturday morning. if bay point camera looking towards mount diablo. the golden hills here. temperatures off to a cool start this morning but into the 70s this afternoon. well, illegal dumping in oakland is increasing, and residents are just getting fed up about it. yesterday homeowners from east and west oakland held a protest in the lobby of waste management's oakland offices. they were asking the company to offer free monthly dropoff days at the dump. residents believe having a cleaner city may hebe curb the crime. >> grime brings crime and we really believe that. >> i've heard more gun shots in the last year there have been four murders, one block around the corner from my house. >> a representative from waste management says illegal dumping is the city's responsibility,

and says residents should be talking to their elected officials. neighbors are also asking the city to install surveillance cameras in hot spots to catch those responsible. the woman accused of planting poison juice at a san jose starbucks last month will not face any criminal charges. the santa clara county district attorney's office says it cannot prove ramena babahanian committed a crime. the 50-year-old was arrested after witnesses say they saw her try to sneak two contaminated orange juice bottles into a display case. the fire department say the bottles contain lethal amounts of rubbing alcohol but the d.a.'s office says further tests show the liquid include vinegar which is not considered harmful substance. a teenager is under arrest in connection with a killing in san jose. 19-year-old christopher lema attacked 36-year-old demetrius port were a ma sheet tee. investigators found porter's body outside a jack in the box parking lot last week. the two men police say didn't appear to know each other.

they're still trying to figure out the motive for the attack. los angeles police detectives are starting a second investigation into officers reselling guns for profit. the police department first alerted federal investigators about the alleged firearm sales and possible gun violations, but the l.a.p.d. police chief admits that investigation is lacking and has now ordered a second investigation. police officers can often buy guns at discounted prices for professional use, but a lieutenant was implicated back in 2010 of reselling dozens and possibly hundreds of firearms. a controversial arizona sheriff's is at the center of an immigration debate plans to appeal a federal judge's decision. sheriff joe arpaio calls himself the toughest in the country. a judge ruled that arpaio and his deputies vie allotted the constitutional rights of latinos by singles them out without cause during immigration patrols. the sheriff denies the allegation of racial profiling. this case stems from a class action lawsuit and seeks only a

change in the sheriff's practices. a 1.3 million dollar federal grant is going to schools in newtown, connecticut. the newtown community was struck by tragedy back in december following the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school. 20 students and six educators were shot and killed. education secretary arnie duncan announced the grant yesterday and discussed his goals for keeping students safe. >> we want a lot fewer young people being shot. and we want a lot fewer young people growing up in a climate of fear. and we can figure out how to get there, if we can agree on those two goals then we can find i think a common agenda to move forward. >> duncan says the grant money can be used for counseling and training staff. he says decisions to place armed guards at schools will be left to individual schools. the numbers are in, and two dozen east bay schools ranked high compared to similar schools statewide. the public school rankings were based on how well students performed on standardized tests taken more than a year ago.

from around the bay area and everyone is meeting at the search command center which is at bedford hall, at st. gabriel's church in san francisco. the class kids foundation is helping to organize this search and figure out some of the search areas that should be focused on today. everyone will head out just about an hour from now. they will be looking for any sign of rasmussen, who disappeared after last weekend's beta breakers. his clothing was discovered at ocean beach and one theory is that he may have gone swimming in the water. the family set up a facebook page to help find the 27-year- old who lives in emeryville. searchers will be heading out to golden gate park and the surrounding neighborhoods. they'll be searching near ocean beach as well. rasmussen had just finished walking the beta breakers when he said goodbye to his friends and headed toward the ocean. his credit cards and phone were found near the beach chalet restaurant. now rasmussen works as a project developer for an alternative energy company in san ramon. his father is hopeful he'll be found safe.

savidge, ktvu, channel 2 news. new information and new pictures of an overnight house fire in san jose. just before 4:30 this morning, firefighters were called to a home on timber view court near the country club. crews knocked down the fire in just about 30 minutes. five people including a child lived inside the home. one person was treated for minor injuries at the scene. no word on what started that fire, and within the next 30 minutes, you will hear from one of the firefighters who are at the scene. investigators are reviewing surveillance video looking for clues following a robbery at livermore's premium outlets. thieves targeted the true religion jeans store on thursday around 4 p.m. a group of 10 people rushed inside and overwhelmed the clerks. they grabbed several pairs over designer jeans worth about $5000. police say the thieves could be part of a crime ring operating throughout the bay area. >> they are hitting all the true religions, like saks, they stole their true religion genes that they saw there. >> police say witnesses said

the group was made up of four men and six women in their 20s and check out this cars, because apparently they had get- away cars in the parking lot, a red 19 80s toyota corolla and a silver car similar to a ford taurus. san francisco state basketball star is facing charges for the killing of a rapper near atlanta. 25-year-old desensay white will appear in a georgia courtroom next friday. he was arrested in redwood city and extradited last week. investigators say he is one of five people charged with the shooting death of 19-year-old rap artist known as little fat last june. white first played at texas tech and roomed with current 49er wide receiver michael crabtree before transferring to santa clara university. he played his senior season at s.f. state this year. a former high school football coach in the east bay is behind bars on $21 million bail. 51-year-old baron edwards is in the contra costa county jail. he faces nearly two dozen counts of sexually abuse children, many under the age of

good saturday morning. here is the oakland tower cam looking across the bay. san francisco in the distance. lots of sunshine but a cool start, 40s and 50s. new this morning, authorities in the u.k. are questioning the friend of a suspect in the killing of a british soldier. that friend was arrested on suspicion of unspecified acts of terrorism following his television interview last night with the bbc. in the interview, he says the suspect, michael an snu had changed after visiting kenya. claiming he was physically and sexually detained during that visit. two men are accused of killing 25-year-old lee rigby. both suspects remain in the hospital after being shot by police. the swedish capitol of stockholm was hit by angry mops again last night. they vandalized schools and threw rocks at police and firefighters. the protests began over the death of a 69-year-old man who was shot by police earlier this month. police have called in reinforcements.

the u.s. government is also urging american citizens to stay out of that area. before this week, high school seniors in moore, oklahoma had been looking forward to this day for years. but it's a bitter sweet day for them in the wake of monday's deadly tornado. as custom, moore's three high schools will hold their graduation ceremony today at a convention center in oklahoma city. this is the first time since the storm that large groups of people from moore have gathered in a formal setting. just yesterday, an elementary school teacher who was buried under the rubble talked publicly for the first time from her hospital bed. >> i don't want to get emotional, but hell crashing down. and we just started to hear glass break. >> kids are screaming, teachers are screaming. >> the tornado killed 24 people, including 10 children. right now there are still six people in the hospital with one child in critical condition. president obama will visit the area tomorrow and monday talking to survivors, and first responders.

police say a growing problem in moore is looting. officers are currently reopening neighborhoods flattened by the tornado. residents are being allowed back during the day to see if they can recover any belongings. officers then close off the areas at night, but looters are still finding ways to sneak into homes. >> i work two jobs to get what i've got. they can work two jobs and get their stuff, too, just like i've had to. they can keep their hands off of other people's things. >> officers say looters are targeting yards with scrap metal. so far, at least two people have been arrested. meanwhile, a local group is making superhero capes to send to children affected by oklahoma's recent tornado. kiss the toad creations in danville is holding a sewing event today at the danville women's cleanup. the group hopes to make 100 capes. and this is not the first time it's done this. back in 2008, volunteers gave

superstorm sandy flooded tanks and caused power failures. exhibits featuring walruses, heir seals and sea lions will be open but the back half of the acquarium will be closed for repairs until 2016. in upstate new york a search continues for a pilot following a crash. bodies of two passengers were recovered last night from a wooded area near the crash site but authorities say much of the wreckage is sub merged in a tha focusing the search for the pilot. angel flight is a nonprofit group that arranges free air transportation for sick patients. the cause of that crash is under investigation. the family of a cyclist killed in the mission district says he had just recently moved to the city. 21-year-old dillan mitchell died on thursday after colliding with a garbage truck at 16th and south van nuys avenue. he was not wearing a helmet and traveling at a high rate of speed. he moved to the city from clayton just last week to start an apprenticeship as an

electrician. the santa cruz county man is in jail after police found dozens of firearms inside his home. yesterday police served a search warrant at a mobile home in unincorporated santa cruz county. nicholas eukich who police say was plotting to commit grand theft. investigators say they found 48 assault rifles, shotguns and handguns inside the home. they also found high-capacity magazines and more than 50,000 rounds of ammunition. californians are now learning the prices of health insurance under obamacare. people who don't receive or cannot afford insurance through their jobs can buy coverage through an exchange at a group rate negotiated by state regulators. depending on income, california healthcare prices for a 40-year- old range from $40 to $300 per month for a mid-level plan. some young adults who are less expensive to cover could pay nothing depending on how much they earn. consumers can begin signing up in october for plans that take effect next january. a new bill that places restrictions on electronic

new this morning, a south bay home selling for a million and a half dollars catches fire. what made the fire so difficult for crews to put out. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm claw sedin wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. we have new information about that house fire in san jose. we first reported at the start of the newscast, just before 4:30 this morning crews were called to a house on timber view court. it took firefighters about 30 minutes to sting all of the flames. we're now told that the family was in the process of selling the house. the asking price 1.5 million dollars. firefighters say the family had stored much of their belongings in the garage and that is where

from kenmore square all the way to the official finish line. the city of san bruno says it will not let pg&e off the hook for the damage caused by the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. after learning pg&e is fighting a record 2.25 billion dollar fine proposed by state regulators. in a filing pg&e says it has accepted full responsibility for the blast which killed eight people and seriously injured many more. pg&e calls the fine excessive, and says its shareholders are already paying for 2.2 billion dollars in system upgrades and improvements. about 300 people in northeastern california have been ordered to boil their water because of damage from thursday night's earthquake. the magnitude 5.7 quake was centered near greenville, about 230 miles northeast of san francisco. the earthquake ruptured a tank that supplies drinking water to residents so they'll have to boil their water until further notice. it was the strongest quake to hit the mostly wilderness

region since 1934. sizemologists predict there will be dozens of after shocks. because the area isn't closely monitored by scientists, rangers are being asked to keep a look out. seismic ockscould destablize local hot springs, sulfur pools and steam events. so far they haven't been able to identify the fault line that triggered the quake. >> it's possible we'll never determine the name of the fault, because unless it's mapped at the surface and a geologist has assigned a name to it, there's no name for the fault. >> the region from lake tahoe north to lake alminor where the quakes are centered are riddles with unnamed and unknown faults. scientists are looking for people to help them track local quakes. the united states geological survey has put up an online help wanted side. they want to install about 30 seismic sensors in homes and businesses throughout the zamora moen area.

cal fire is warning people to be careful with increased danger for wildfires. officials say with one of the dryest winters on record, conditions for wildfires are prime. now in an average year, by late may, cal fire usually responds to about 850 wildfires. but this year, they have already responded to nearly 1600. cal fire is also warning people to be mindful of water safety this weekend. with temperatures up and the snow melting, water ways are running high. fire danger definitely up and rung this season, but right now turn to mark, fire, red flag warnings not really in existence on this saturday? >> at least today. we're cooling off this weekend. right now we're tracking patchy fog regrouping out there. with that you'll notice the cool breeze off to a brisk start this saturday morning. here is our camera looking towards the east bay hills. some of that overcast forming over the past two or three hours. with all those barbecues this weekend with the holiday weekend we are expecting fire dangers to be elevated somewhat. the hills are still very dry. and that will be increasing, will be an increasing concern

wanted in connection to a string of cell phone robberies in sonoma county. sheriff deputies say four men posed as customers at a cell phone store in windsor. they allegedly snatched phones off the display and drove away with $3000 worth of merchandise. police chased them onto highway 101. speeds topped 100 miles an hour during the pursuit. the suspects ended up scattering into a petaluma neighborhood causing an elementary school to go into lock down. >> i went out and kind of calmed them down. let them know what was happening and their students were safe inside of a locked multi purpose room. >> police eventually arrested three men but one of them, one man did get away. investigators say they believe the suspects also robbed a mill valley at&t story on tuesday. an east bay banker accused of stealing more than a million dollars from client says she is not guilty. linda foss is charged with 20 counts. she entered a not guilty plea in alameda county superior court. cameras weren't allowed inside the proceeding but one of her alleged victims was there.

management says illegal dumping is the city's responsibility, and says that residents should be talking to their elected officials. neighbors are also asking the city to install surveillance cameras in hot spots to help catch those responsible. the woman accused of planting poisoned juice at a san jose starbucks last month will not face any criminal charges. the santa clara county district attorney's office says it can't prove that the woman committed a crime. the 50-year-old was arrested after witnesses said they saw her try to sneak two contaminated orange juice bottles into a display case. the san jose fire department said the bougets contained lethal amounts of rubbing alcohol, but the d.a.'s office says further tests showed the liquid included vinegar which isn't considered a harmful substance. a teenager is under arrest in connection with the killing in san jose. police say 19-year-old christopher lima attacked 36- year-old demetrius porter with a machete. investigators found porter's body last week on blossom hill road. police say the two men didn't appear to know each other and

they're trying to figure out the motive police in london are trying to figure out what led up to the deadly attack of a zoo keeper. 24-year-old sara mcclay was injured after being attacked by a sumatran tiger at an animal park and later died at the hospital. officials say mcclay had worked at the park for several years and was good with big cats. this attack comes a few months after a 24-year-old intern was killed by a lion at a california animal park near fresno. a 1.3 million dollar federal grant is going to schools in newtown, connecticut. the newtown community was struck by tragedy back in december following that mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school. 20 students and six educators were shot and killed. education secretary arne duncan announced the grant yesterday and discussed his goals for keeping students safe. >> we want a lot fewer young people being shot. and we want a lot fewer young people growing up in a climate of fear. and we can figure out how to get there if we can agree on those two goals then we can find i think a common agenda to

breakers. alex savage is joining us now. >> reporter: searches will be focused in and around golden gate park and ocean beach as well looking for any clues in the disappearance of boras mussen. he went missing after last week's bay to breakers race. we'll show you the search center at st. gabriel's church. these are volunteers who have arrived who are beginning to get their search assignments and they will be heading into the field shortly. more than 200 volunteers expected to take part today. i want to show you the scene from a few minutes ago as volunteers gathered for a briefing this morning at the search center inside this church, they will now be heading out today trying to find boras mussen who disappeared after he walked last week's bay to breakers. his clothing was discovered at ocean beach and there is a theory he went swimming in the water. his credit cards and phone were found near the beach chalet

restaurant. friends and relatives have come in from all over the country including people from oregon where rasmussen is originally from. i talked with one of his close friends who said he's not surprised with how many people are taking part in this search. >> beau's kind of a special guy. he has a lot of friends, people that care about him. he's very good about keeping up with people. this does not surprise me really in the least. >> reporter: he did tell me that he is not surprised by the number of them people who have come down here today. he says that beau rasmussen was a well liked person. he works as project developer for an alternative energy company in san ramon and this past week volunteers have done several searches. they have checked about 20 miles of coastline from san fransisco to pacifica with no luck. in addition as we bring you back out here live to the search center, volunteers are about to be -- about to head out in the field shortly.

national cemetery. there are about 26,000 graves in the pray sid owe. scouts have been placing flags there for more than 50 years. in washington state the bridge collapse along interstate 5 is causing traffic delays for drivers this holiday weekend. there are detours in place. travelers are being warned to expect major backups. three people were hurt when the 160-foot section of the bridge collapsed on thursday after apparently being hit by a truck. that bridge is a main corridor that takes people from canada to california, and some businesses say they are bracing for the impact of its closure. we supply a lot of oversized shipments and this is our main route right here. that's going to put a big hamper on us, and a lot of the businesses around here that people aren't going to want to go into because of the nightmare of traffic to get into it. >> a report released yesterday shows officials with the state's department of

transportation performed a special inspection six months ago on the bridge because there were signs it had been hit by a different vehicle. inspectors say they found pairs and other problems including rust and vegetation that was growing in panels. san fransisco's state basketball star is facing charges for the killing of a rapper near atlanta. 25-year-old decensae white will appear in a georgia courtroom next friday. he was arrested and extradited last week. investigators say he is one of five people charged with the shooting death of a 19-year-old rap artist known as lil' phat last june. white played at texas tech and room with current 49er receiver michael crabtree. he played his senior season at sf state this year. a former high school football coach in the east bay is in jail being held on a $20 million bail. 51-year-old daren edwards is in the county jail and faces nearly two dozen could wants of sexually abusing children, many under the age of ten. edwards coached football at kennedy high school in richmond

when children put those capes on their spirits are lifted. new this morning, federal investigators are looking into how two freight trains collided in southeast missouri. at least seven people were injured in this morning's crash. authorities say the trains collided at an overpass in scott county. one of the trains hit the pillar to the overpass making it collapse. two vehicles were on the bridge at the time. most of the victims have been treated and released from the hospital. the jersey shore is back in business just in time for the memorial day weekend. new jersey chris christie is spending the holiday weekend getting the word out. he's hoping to boost tourism and business by urging people to visit the board walks with their families. seven monthsing a superstorm sandy slammed into the shore causing billions of dollars in damage. >> i think the shore is finally back. we had a lot of devastation back here. the town of point pleasant beach did a great job of cleaning the place up. >> president obama will visit the jersey shore on tuesday for a firsthand look at the

progress being made. he's also expected to meet with businesses and homeowners who were helped during the recovery efforts. new this morning authorities in the uk are questioning the friend of a suspect in the killing of a british soldier. the friend was arrested on suspicion of unspecified acts of terrorism following his television interview last night with the bbc. in the interview he said the . spect, had changed after ken he claimed he was physically and sexually abused wheylike attend during that visit. he and another man are accused of killing 25-year-old lee rigby and both suspects remain in the hospital after being shot by police. in upstate new york a search continues for a pilot following a crash. the bodies of two passengers were recovered from a wooded area near the crash site. authorities say much of that wreckage is submerged in a pond and that's where divers are focusing their search for the pilot. angel flight is a nonprofit group that arranges free air transportation for sick patients. the as of the crash is unknown.

honoring the nation's fallen heros, hundreds bay area scouts are paying tribute this memorial day weekend. good morning and welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday may 25th. i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. happening now thousands of scouts are recognizing the sacrifice of service members. they are planting u.s. flags at the grave sites of both the san fransisco national cemetery and the golden gate national cemetery in san bruno. it is a memorial day weekend tradition dating back more than 50 years. the golden gate ceremony includes a man who has been part bay area scouting for years. he says he is now organizing scout troops in afghanistan. if you're planning to head to the russian river this memorial day weekend you can expect big crowds and an increase in deputies patrolling the area to cut down on litter and

drinking, the sonoma county sheriff's office and the chp are beefing up patrols along the russian river. offices and deputies say they have seen a spike in the number of people heading to the river. they say it's partly due to the organization of holiday parties on social media sites. law enforcement agencies also plan to crack down on drunk drivers. dui check points will be set up throughout the bay area. 25 people were killed on california roadways during the memorial day weekend. it says about 60 percent of those who died were not wearing their seat belts. more than 1300 people were arrested last year for driving under the influence. thousands of people are expected to hit the road this memorial day weekend and according to aaa there's a bit of relief because gas prices are lower than last year's holiday weekend, but that's all relative. it's going to cost you more than 4 bucks, the average price in california is 4.02 a gallon. let's give you a look at how things look locally. the average is 4.11.

cal fire responds to about 850 wildfires. this year many many many. cal fire is also warning people to be mindful of water safety this weekend because with temperatures up, the snow is melted and those water ways are running high. the city of san bruno says it will not let pg&e off the hook for the damage caused by the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. the city released a statement after learning that pg&e is fighting a record $2.25 billion fine proposed by state regulators. in a filing pg&e says it has accepted full responsibility for the blast which killed eight people and seriously injured many more. pg&e calls the fine excessive and says its shareholders are already paying $2.2 billion in system upgrades and improvements. about 300 people living in the northeastern part of the state have been ordered to boil their water due to damage from thursday night's earthquake. the magnitude 5.7 quake was centered near the community of

greenville about 230 miles northeast of san fransisco. the earthquake ruptured a tank that supplies drinking water to residents. they must boil their water until further notice. it was the strongest quake to hit that region since 1934. seismologists predict there will be dozens of after shocks over the next week. because the area is not closely monitored by scientists, park rangers are being asked to keep a lout this holiday weekend. seismic shocks could destabilize hot springs, sulfur pools and steam vents. seismologists have not been able to identify the fault line that triggered the quake. >> it's possible we will never determine the name of the fault because unless it's happened at the surface and a geologist has assigned a name to it there's no name for the fault. >> the region from lake tahoe through the sierra where the quakes are centered are riddled with unnamed and unknown faults. seismologists are looking for people to help them track

earthquakes. the united states geological survey has put up an online help wanted sign. they want to install 30 seismic sensors in homes and businesses throughout the pleasanton, dublin area. they detect seismic waves of quakes. police are searching for a suspect want in connection with a string of cell phone robberies in sonoma county. sheriff deputies say four men posed as customers in that cell phone store in windsor and snapped phones off the display and drove away with $3000 in merchandise. police chased them on to highway 101. speeds topped 100 miles an hour during the pursuit and the suspects scattered into a petaluma neighborhood causing an elementary school to go into lockdown. >> i we went out and calmed them down and let them know what was happening and that their students were safe inside. >> police eventually arrested three men but one person got away. investigators believe the

suspects also offend a mill valley at&t store on tuesday. an east bay banker accused of stealing more than a million dollars from her long-time client says she's not guilty. linda foss is charged with 20 counts including embezzlement. she entered her not guilty plea yesterday. cameras weren't allowed inside the proceedings but one of her alleged victims was there. julia hobinger says she stole more than $40,000 from her and more than $600,000 from her mother-in-law. >> her husband, my father-in- law worked very hard for his money because he wanted to provide her with all that security, so i'm angry today. >> linda foss remains in jail. bail was set at $1.6 million. police are getting much needed help from nearby law enforcement agencies, operation good will began ten days ago. agencies including the salano county sheriff's office the

workers. they say there's still -- they're still not sure how today's picketing will affect today's giants game at 1:05. center plate had previously said the managers will serve the food to fans if workers go on strike. the two sides have been at odds over wage increases and health benefits. we're going to continue to follow this story and will bring you more information as it becomes available. two dozen east bay schools are happy about the scores, the public school rankings were based on how well students performed on standardized tests. it's all done under the academic performance index where schools are ranked 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest. 24 schools scored 10. 11 were in alameda county. 13 were in contra costa county. it is graduation day at san fransisco state university today and a record number of students are being awarded degrees. today's ceremony at 1 p.m. and the larry baird the president and ceo of the san fransisco giants will be the

the fire started in the garage and then spread upstairs. smoke alarms woke up the six people inside the home. today would have been an open house. the owners were asking for $1.5 million. and a big turnout for today's search in san fransisco for a missing emeryville man. family, friends and volunteers are looking for 27-year-old beau rasmussen who vanished after last weekend's bay to breakers. >> reporter: good morning, the class kids foundation has come in to help organize this search effort and the family of beau rasmussen is expecting a huge turnout. they're expecting more than 200 volunteers to take part in the search. many of them have headed into the field and they're searching for any clues into the disappearance of rasmussen who went missing after last week weekend's bay to breakers race here in san fransisco. an hour ago this was the scene as dozens of volunteers gathered for a briefing at what has become the search center at st. gabriel church this the

city. searches will be looking in and around the golden gate park and checking near ocean beach. that's where rasmussen's clothes were found along with his credit cards and cell phone last weekend. >> i go back and forth between these amazing scenarios where he got knocked in the head and we're going to find him in the park buried under leaves and still alive to, you know, the horrible feeling hey, my son drowned. >> while this case is being investigationed by the police department, this morning we did see a number of san fransisco police officers here at the search center center and i'm told about a half dozen officers will be involved in today's search. rasmussen works as a project developer for an alternative energy company in san ramon. a number of his co-workers are here today taking part in the search, and this past week volunteers also did a lot of searching, looking at coastline from about san fransisco down to pacifica with no luck.

a machete. they found porters body outside a jack-in-the-box parking lot. the men didn't appear to know each other and they're trying to figure out a motive. hundreds of runsers are coming together to finish the last mile of the boston marathon. on april 15th two explosions killed three people and wounded more than 260 others. today more than 2,000 people and some of the bombing victims are running together from kenmore square to the finish line. a $1.3 million federal grant is going to schools in newtown connecticut. ment community was struck by tragedy in december following that mass shooting at sandy hook elementary school. 20 students and six educators were shot and killed. education secretary arnie duncan announced the grant yesterday and discussed his goals for keeping students safe. >> we want a lot fewer young people being shot, and we want a lot fewer young people growing up in a climate of fear, and we need to figure out how to get there. if we can agree on those two

goals then we can find a common agenda to move forward. >> duncan says the grant money can be used for counseling and training staff and he says decisions to place armed guards on campuses is going to be left to individual schools. illegal dutching in oakland -- dumping in oakland is increasing and residents are getting fed up. homeowners from east and west oakland held a protest in the lobby of waste management's oakland offices. they were asking the company to offer free monthly dropoff days at the dump. residents say they believe having a cleaner city may help curb some of the crime. >> grime brings crime and we believe that. >> i've heard more gunshots and -- in the last year there have been four murders, one block around the corner from my house. >> a representative from waste management says illegal dumping is the city's responsibility and that residents should be talking to their elected officials. neighbors are also asking the city to install surveillance cameras in hot spots to catch

those responsible. a controversial arizona sheriff says he is going to appeal a federal judge's ruling in a case about racial profiling. sheriff joe lapaio calls himself the toughest in the country. a judge ruled that arpio and his deputies violated the constitutional rights of latinos by singling them out without cause. the sheriff denies allegations of racial profiling. this case stems from a class action lawsuit and seeks only a change in the sheriff's practices. urban outfitters is being criticized for selling a line of products that look like prescription bottles. this is a picture of one of the clothing chains latest controversial products. yesterday attorney general and 22 other state attorneys accused the retailer of undermining the fight against prescription drug abuse. lawmakers asked the products to be removed from stores. yahoo has joined in on the bidding for the online tv streaming service hulu. this comes after yahoo
