me the driver who triggered the crash was under the influence. now, this accident blocked all the lanes for 33 hours or more. >> traffic is moving once again and the scene is cleared. it is a chain reaction crash. it happened after two morning. >> red honda sedan veered out of control and came to rest facing the wrong way in the fast lane of the freeway. two cars and a party bus slammed into the red honda, killing the passenger, a woman. the crash seriously injured the driver as well. >> chp believe the driver of the red honda was drunk when he lost control of his car. there were people hurt object board the party bus as it collided with the stopped car. we had approximately. 18 people in the party bus. we had two moderate injuries and six minor injuries. they were all transported. >> usually, you don't have,

when they are in the party bus. >> reporter: chp is not relet'sing the name of the woman -- reflecting the name of the woman in the crash. the man remains in the hospital being treated for serious injuries. but the chp officer told me a short time ago, the driver will be facing dell any dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. alex savidge, channel 2 news. a man is facing felony drunk driving charges. he hit a girl in vacaville and then ran off. police say a 21-year-old driver hit the girl was she was walking across the street and alamo drive. the driver left the scene and then turned himself in. the girl suffered a head injury and is expected to survive. there is an increased police are presence on all the

the bay bridge and it is cool to mild for the afternoon. investigation is underway for a train collision in missouri that led to the collapse of a freeway overpass. we reported right here on "mornings on 2". it involved two trains. investigators say one of them hit a support pillar and that the freeway could not support the impact. fuel leak from one of the trains caused a small fire to break out. they were injured when the portion of the freeway gaveway. all victims are expected to recover. they are calling the bridge collapse in washington state a wake up call from the nation. they need to pinpoint exactly went went wrong to prevent similar occurrences around the country. the bridge went into the skagit river after it was hit by the semi. and two cars plunged into the river. they started removing sections of the bridge and it will be months before the repairs are

possibility of some rain. i'll have a look at when you can expect that. and your numbers for the afternoon coming up. new this morning, a suspected drunk driver faces criminal charges in connection to a deadly multi vehicle accuracy in bulger game. around two a.m., a red honda going southbound slammed into a barrier on highway 101. investigators believe moments later the honda was hit by another car and a packed party bus. the driver of the red honda was taken to the hospital with major injuries. officers plan to arrest him on charges that include drunk driving. a 36-year-old female pang in his car died -- passenger in his car died at the scene. >> when it's at night it's always better to stay in the vehicle, make sure you seat belt is fastened. at this point we don't know for sure whether the passenger had the seat belt fastened. there's a possibility that she was not restrained. >> eight people aboard the party bus were hurt but none of them seriously. southbound lanes of 10 once were closed this morning.

a fairfield man is facing felony drunk driving charges after police say he hit a 16- year-old girl in vacaville and took off. it happened about 6:45 last night. police say the 21-year-old driver hit the girl as she was walking across the neat at nut tree road. investigators say the driver left theenbut turned himself in later. the girl suffered a head injury, but is expected to survive. a fire forced more than 100 people from an apartment complex in mill valley. it started just about 3:00 this morning at the shelter hill apartments on miwak way. firefighters say the complex is undergoing major renovations and the units where the fire started were under construction. more than 100 people were evacuated but many have been allowed to return home. firefighters had some trouble getting to this fire. >> this complex is built on a steep hillside. so accessing the area of the fire was difficult. units had to stretch hose down several flights of stairs. >> no one was hurt and the cause is still being investigated. firefighters are still trying

to figure out how several power poles caught fire overnight. this is video of one poll that caught fire in san francisco. cameras also caught another fire in may fear and manzanita in south san francisco. firefighters responded to at least nine similar fires overnight. both pg&e and fire crews are investigating the cause. we're learning about a few power age outages in the bay area. in san francisco more than 1600 customers affected and south san francisco,fully three00 customers. it's unclear if those outages are related to this morning's power pole fires. right now there is no estimate on when the power will be restored. 900 customers in san rafael have lost electricity but it will be back on in two hours. some residents in antioch are calling for new fencing around a canal after a 13-year- old boy drowned. investigators believe the teenager was playing with a cousin near the water's edge when he fell in yesterday near hill crest avenue. that canal runs 6 to 8 feet

deep. the currents go up to 9 miles an hour. and a neighbor saw the victim's cousin soaking wet, running for help. >> we all ran back there, we ran back there, only thing i seen was a sliver, nobody was in sight. >> rescue crews recoveried the boy's body after a two-hour search. witnesses say the boys were playing in an area clearly marked with no trespassing signs but neighbors are saying there should be a higher fence along that canal to make it more difficult for the kids to climb over. authorities say they do routinely see young people get tempted by the water ways in the bay area but those cases often have deadly consequences. in february of 2011, a 16-year- old and 17-year-old from walnut creek drowned after rafting on a canal near downtown that was filled with storm debris. people in san antonio, texas are bracing for the potential of more flooding this morning. torrential rains cause water levels to reach 25 feet in some areas. a news helicopter captured the rescue of this man trapped on the roof of a public restroom.

crews used a life boat to get to him and then brought him to land. crews also responded to more than 200 other calls, most of those were to get people out of the water who got caught off guard, and they were trapped in the rushing water. many vehicles had to be abandoned in flooded areas, even that bus. >> really d. ba really bad. but like i said, i've never seen it like that. >> i wasn't expecting it to be that -- you know, that well sub merged into the water. >> texas officials say two women died in the flood waters and one teenage boy is still missing. 12,000 people are currently without power and many homes have extensive damage. there is more rain in the forecast today, and the national weather service has issued a flood watch through the evening. president obama is scheduled to land in oklahoma in just about 40 minutes. he is going to meet with survivors of monday's deadly tornado, as well as with first responders. the tornado killed 24 people and it carved a 17-mile long path of destruction with winds that approached 200 miles an

hour. president obama plans to talk with the families of the victims. he wants to make sure the communities around oklahoma city get all the federal assistance they need to recover. oklahoma's governor has already come up with a list. >> what i need is the ability to get through red tape, the ability to get the fema funds in here quickly, and to get the services that our citizens need to help them recover through this terrible disaster. >> fema has already helped some families get the money to buy needed supplies, but oklahoma's governor says the state will need help clearing the 17-mile debris field. a bay area company has helped storm chasers track the oklahoma tornado. the daily review newspaper says that the weather channel used special equipment made by davis instruments of hayward. that equipment was put in an s.u.v. and included a roof-mounted electronic weather station. that portable weather station passes along information, including temperatures and wind speeds. giving you a live look at

apartment complexes. officials say they believe the fire started in a creek bed behind the apartments near newell community park at melody and mount claire drives. 75 people were evacuated but the fire was contained in less than an hour. eight to 10 acres burned, nob was hurt. investigators are trying to find out what caused a grass fire that shut down parts of interstate 580. the fire started on one side of the westbound lane just east of livermore and as you can see from this video, the plumes of smoke that came off that fire really made visibility tough. and that caused traffic to back up as the drivers slowed down in the area. fire crews say at one point the fire jumped the freeway and ignited the grass in the center define and all 58 acres burned. no one was hurt. an oregon high school student is facing attempted murder charges after police got a tip he was going to blow up his high school. the 17-year-old was arrested on thursday. investigators say they found six homemade bombs in a secret compartment located under the floor in his bedroom. they also found diagrams,

a deadly early-morning crash in san mateo county. what investigators think triggered the pile-up that shut down highway 101 for hours. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. it's sunday, may 26th. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. new this morning chp blames a drunk driver for a deadly wreck in holiday weekend. around 2 a.m. a red honda crashed in the southbound lanes of 101. investigators believe moments later the honda was hit by another car and then a party bus. a fourth vehicle swerved around the pile-up. a 36-year-old female passenger in the honda died at the scene. the driver was transported to the hospital with major injuries.

chp says he will be arrested and face charges including drunk driving. 8 people on the bus were also hurt. expect an increased police presence on all bay area roadways throughout the holiday weekend. chp and other agencies will be looking for drunk drivers and have called in extra officers to work and will be conducting d.u.i. checkpoints through midnight tomorrow. officers say memorial day weekend is one of the most dangerous times of year out there on the roadways. >> we see these horrible accidents that sometimes involve innocent people, that have not been drinking and are just, you know, random victims of somebody who has been impaired. >> in the first 12 hours of the maximum enforcement period, chp officers made 58 d.u.i. arrests on bay area roads. that's down from 72 during the same period last year. and statewide, there have been 360 arrests compared to 375 last year. a double stabbing at an annual celebration in vacaville last night. investigators say two people were attacked in a downtown

parking lot at the fiesta days festival. police say it began with a fight at a carbon val and ended up in a park area at andrews park. we're told the victims are a 16- year-old and 41-year-old relative. one is in critical condition. vacaville fiesta days is one of the city's most popular events. 30,000 are expected to attend that week-long celebration. and police in paris are trying to figure out if there's a connection between the stabbing of a greenwich solder and wednesday's attack on a british soldier. investigators say a man in a robe walked up behind a 23-year- old french soldier yesterday and stabbed them in the neck with either a knife or box cutter. the victim is hospitalized but is expected to survive. french defense officials believe he was targeted because of his military service >> we are in a place, a soldier, an individual who comes to stab, you don't have to be a great observatory see that people are taking inspiration from acts committed abroad to reproduce them here. >> france has been on heightened alert since january when it launched a military

intervention in the african nation of mali to retain territory they say was seized by islamic radicals. in england, counter terrorism officers have arrested three more men in connection to the attack on an off-duty solder in london. the three new suspects are in their early to late 20s, and two were -- stun guns were used on them when they were restrained. all were retained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. four other suspects was arrested last week. this morning we've learned one man was deported in kenya in 2010 for preparing to fight with al qaeda militants in somalia. the family of an emeryville man who disappeared says it will not leave the bay area until he is found. relatives of 27-year-old beau rasmussen came down from oregon to look for him. dozens scoured san francisco's ocean beach and surrounding areas yesterday. searchers handed out flyers vowing not to give up and even a half dozen san francisco police officers took part in the search. a close friend of rasmussen says he remains hopeful he is

still alive. >> it's heartbreaking. it's someone's son, someone's brother. it's a great guy, and lots of friends and family are here for. >> investigators say is there is no evidence of foul play. they say one theory is that rasmussen went swimming after the race lat sunday. his clothes were found at ocean beach with his phone and credit cards. an investigation is under way in sacramento after a man died in custody. police were called to this metro pcs store friday night by a female clerk who said she was afraid of a man who was acting belligerent. police tried to subdue the man and sprayed him with pepper spray but during the struggle he physically overpowered one of the officers. >> she was hitting him from the back, but because of the guy is a big guy, so he was just beating the police officer. he was not feeling any hits from the back. >> police say at least two citizens and a security guard tried to help by kicking and striking the man, and after he was in custody, police say

that's when they noticed he was unresponsive. the man was pronounced dead at a hospital. so far the cause of death hasn't been determined. caltrans is expected to announce this week whether the new eastern span of the bay bridge will open on time. that's 6 and a half billion dollar bridge is slated to open labor day weekend but the discovery of faulty bolts during construction has put that timeline in doubt. while some have argued the bridge opening shouldn't be rushed. caltrans also warns that the current span is not seismically safe and does run the risk of catastrophe if another major quake hits. october 17th is the 24th anniversary of the 1989s low ma prieta quake. on the other hand, engineers warn the new bridge is not invincible. they tell the contra costa times that in the case of an earthquake similar to the size of a ift a few inches or feet. they say the bridge would be drivable but warn there would be long traffic delays during repairs. scientists pre60 a 63% chance

of a magnitude 6 earthquake or greater in the next 30 years. a new safety barrier could go up at the golden gate bridge in two years. that would involve a 12 inch wide 32 inch high median made of concrete and steel. trucks would move that barrier around during the day and afternoon depending on traffic flow and the project would be complete by early 2015. it will cost 26 and a half million dollars. that money expected to come from federal grants and tolls. and let's give you a live look now at san francisco's mission district. where the 35th annual san francisco carnivale grand parade is just about to get under way. it's beginning at 24th and bryant there, it will proceed down mission street, to 17th and there will also be an art expo. the mexican museum will be featuring and show casing a latino and chicano artists. alex savidge will have a live report at 9:48. a lot of fun to be had in

starting here with a beautiful shot over san francisco. the sunshine peeking through, the low clouds there, 50 -- 55 degrees in san francisco this morning. hello to you. check out all that water. water going 40 feet into the air after a car hit a fire hydrant in burling game this morning. that happened on masterson road near highway 101 in burling game shortly after 6:00. the car took out the hydrant and street signs and took off. an investigation is under way into a train collision in missouri that led to the collapse of a freeway overpass. take a look at the pictures. as we first reported yesterday on mornings on 2, that accident involved two trains. investigators say one of them hit a support pillar, and that

the freeway just couldn't support that impact, and that's the result. a fuel leak from one of the trains also caused a small fire to break out, 7 people in two cars were hurt when the 40-foot section of that freeway gave way. all of the victims are expected to recover. >> and federal transportation officials are calling the bridge collapse in washington state a wake-up call for the nation. they say they need to pinpoint exactly what went wrong to prevent similar disasters around the country be the u-5 bridge collapsed into the skagit river after being truck by an 18 wheeler. three people had to be rescued after they plunged into the water. crews have started removing secedes of the bridge but say they could be looking at months before repairs are made and the bridge are k. reopen. in rancho cordova, two people and 17 animals died after a hours fire that started around 4:00 this morning. neighbors say the victims are a married couple in their 70s. four dogs, three cats and 10 birds also died in that fire. firefighters say the home did not appear to have a working

smoke detector. arson investigators are on scene, but right now, the cause is not known. and we have some new information for you about the two people killed in that angel flight plane crash in new york state. a friend now confirms that the victims were a vietnam war veteran and his wife. their bodies were recovered from the wreckage of the plane that went down on friday night. the body of the pilot still hasn't been found. angel flight is a nonprofit group that arranges free flights with volunteer pilots for sick patients. the plane was on its way from massachusetts to new york, and witnesses say it fell apart in the sky before it crashed into a pond below. >> going down with air bags, and once we get that to the surface we'll search the interior and see if the other victim is inside. >> sources say the vietnam veteran was on his way to get treatment for cancer. the victims' names have not been released. pope francis has a message for the mafia. he says stop exploiting people.

today the pope condemned the mafia and asked them to turn to god. he also paid tribute to an italian priest who he says was murdered by the sicilian mafia in 1993. yesterday the vatican honored the priest as a martyr. the first step towards saint hood. the saint's prison realignment plan is having a huge impact at the solano county jail. the county sheriff says the inmate population has jumped in two years by 250 inmates. the governor's re alignment program started in 2011 as a way to ease overcrowding in state prisons and staff money. it works by sending low-level offenders to the county jail. on friday the solano county jail opened 80 new beds to accommodate extra inmates. in marin county drivers and pedestrians are frustrated that a project to improve safety at a busy intersection has been delayed. a stoplight was added at shore line highway and tennessee valley road last fall. but it hasn't been turned on. it was supposed to be turned on in december but caltrans and
