arrived quickly. sal castanedo has more on why it was too late. >> reporter: firefighters have been pouring water. in fact, they just stopped doing that. business owners are still on hold and they won't be able to go back in for a while, according to firefighters, and for that matter, they won't be in business for the foreseeable future. >> my clothes are in there. >> reporter: first responders say when they arrived, it was apparent the fire had been burning for a long time. >> there was a delay in reporting of the fire. it was probably going for quite a while before the first 911 came in. >> reporter: first units quickly called for reinforcement. the fire went to two alarms, bringing about three dozen firefighters to the scene. flames shot out of the roof and soon caused it to collapse. firefighters say no one was inside at the time. no firefighters were hurt fighting the fire. firefighters say this fire was hard to fight because it was in the common attic of a building that caused multiple

businesses. >> in this case, there was no fire below. all of the fire was up in the attic spaces. so that presented quite a challenge to us, particularly with the advanced stage of the fire once we arrived. >> reporter: in all, five businesses were destroyed, including a restaurant, a hair salon, a jewelry shop, a nail shop. this woman who works at buchanan nail salon says the fire will cause hardship for them. >> our busiest month is the summer month. our clients getting their nails done and their hair down and their feet done, you know, this is the season where we make most of the money. >> reporter: this video from newschopper2 taken just a few minutes ago, shows the real damage done by this fire. you can see the roof has collapsed. one of the walls is partially down. probably this building will be a total loss. fire investigators say they don't see anything suspicious with the fire. they had investigators into the building now so they don't think it was suspicious.

they are still investigating. coming up at 5:00 on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00, we talked to another one of the business owners who says he wanted to pass thiss about along to his family and -- this business along to his family and why that now may not be the case. sal castanedoing ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. firefighters are resuming their attack on a wildfire near santa barbara threatening holes. the u.s. forest service says the white fire has now burned 1800 acres in the los padres national forest and is only 10% contained. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon about 15 miles north of santa barbara and forced the evacuation of up to 6,000 memorial day campers and some residents. today, they conducting a massive aerial attack on the fire. more than 550 firefighters are at the fire lines. they believe it may have started from a camp fire. bay area economists says restaurant and hotel industry is not just getting a little

better. it's getting a lot better. they told the "oakland tribune" that hotel revenue is up 8% in the south bay for the first quarter of the year. the numbers are similar for san francisco and the east bay. a spokesman for san jose's fairmont attributes the rebound to a surge in both business and leisure travel. >> it's the sharks, the earthquakes, the as, the concerts has really helped us stretch out our businesses to seven-day occupancy instead of two or three. >> he says employees are bringing home more money, especially part-timers getting more hours and that restaurants are benefiting from this surge in spending. a report on consumer confidence shows a five-year high. the reading rose to 76.2 this month, which is a significant jump from the previous reading of 69 in april. analysts say consumers are feeling more upbeat about the job market and economic growth.

investors liked this news as well as a report out this morning that u.s. home prices jumped 10.9% in march compared to one year ago. taking a live look at the big board, you can see the dow is up triple digits. it was up over 200 points after the opening bell. right now it's up 108 points. the nasdaq is up 26. s&p up 9. a sidewalk memorial is growing in colma at the scene of a deadly memorial day accident. police say the victims were all passengers in a ford mustang and were ejected when the driver rear ended another car on hillside boulevard early yesterday morning. the driver ran off but later turned himself into police. he's 25-year-old paul diaz. he was looked into san mateo county jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run. police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. three people are now under arrest in a triple shooting in san francisco that left one victim in critical condition.

it's a story we've been covering since it was breaking during ktvu's morning news. ktvu's tara moriarty is live at the 16th street b.a.r.t. station where the shooting happened with what she's learned about the apparent motive. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: good afternoon. that's right. police are now looking at surveillance video from cameras mounted above this very busy b.a.r.t. station. they are hoping had will bolster their case to the three people they believe are responsible for the shooting. just before 4:00 this morning, police say three men in a black mercedes station wagon pulled up at 16th and mission at the b.a.r.t. station and tried to rob three men. >> i'm upset it happened here. >> reporter: an argument erupted. the victims were caught in bullets. police say a 40-year-old and 47- year-old man were struck in the leg but will survive. a 47-year-old man was shot in the torso and is fighting for his life. >> we were trying to get medical aid for the victims that were all shot laying on the ground. we were trying to maintain the

crime scene for the witnesses because we don't want to lose them. they had information that proves the shoot -- who the shooters might be. >> reporter: the suspects showed up in the bayview district. >> the suspects fled the area. officers were able to obtain a description of the suspects and the suspect vehicle. that was broadcast over our radio citywide. officers in the bayview district located a vehicle matching that description and attempted to stop the vehicle. >> reporter: police say the suspects tossed a handgun out of the car window near the double rock housing development, then three blocks away, slammed into two parked cars. as they were backing up, they rammed into a patrol car. the officer hurt his back but is okay. >> he caused a police presence. >> reporter: one neighbor didn't want to appear on camera. she said more patrols are needed. >> it changes with the police presence. what happens, we have these kind of incidents. there's a lot of police presence. everything quiets down and the police go away and these things happen again.

>> reporter: now, luckily, there was an officer on patrol just around the corner when the shooting happened. he responded to the scene within a minute. police will be releasing mugshots of the three suspects who we understand will be facing multiple felonies. live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. damage assessments are now complete following last week's deadly tornadoes. assessments from fema and the oklahoma department of emergency management show over 3900 homes, businesses and other buildings were affected. more than 1200 were destroyed and more than 450 sustained major damage. the may 20th tornado that touched down in moore, oklahoma killed 24 people. a day earlier, two people were killed when a tornado hit near shawnee. president obama is in new jersey this noontime checking out the recovery and cleanup in areas devastated by superstorm sandy back in october. he's being escorted by new

in just a few months, berkeley will begin testing one of two controversy metered parking plans. they are part of the three-year pilot program set to start in september in three neighborhoods. the plans are designed to improve parking conditions and encourage people to use alternative means of transportation. one would have drivers pay higher rates between noon and 6:00 p.m. when demand is highest. the other would charge drivers more when they stay longer. a business owner we spoke to this morning says he believes both plans will drive customers away. >> i think they are gonna kill the businesses out here. similar shops down the street away from downtown offering similar services, people will spend their money there instead of getting a ticket here. getting $50. >> the program is partly funded by about $2 million in federal grants. game 7 of the nhl western conference semifinals, just about six hours away. new at noon, fred ingles is

live outside staples center in l.a. where the sharks take on the kings. fred, the winner will take it all. what's the atmosphere like at this hour? >> reporter: well welcome to -- welcome to l.a. staples center, home of the clippers and the lakers. both of those teams, well, their basketball season is done. so staples center is all about the l.a. kings. irvin magic johnson is now a kings' fan. sharks came out 15 minutes earlier for their skate-around inside staples center. they seemed very anxious, loose at monday overwhelmed by the significance of a game 7 game. san jose, 0-5 for the year inside tapes -- inside staples center. the sharks feel they can beat the odds. >> obviously, we are trying to keep things loose and have fun with everything going on.

the as won, 4-1. we're learning that an unusual defense is planned for an oregon teen accused of plotting to low up his school. -- blow up his school. 17-year-old grant accord is due to be arraigned on attempted aggravated murder charges. police arrested him and found bombs in his bedroom. the teen's high school reopened after the team swept the campus for any explosives. students are asked to stay vigilant. >> everyone out there has seen something. none of these incidents occurred in a vacuum. because this time, somebody came forward and we avoided what could have been a horrific event in our school. >> today, of course, a lawyer for the teen's mother says her lawyer suffers from a medical condition brought on by strep throat conditions. a vandal tagged this

there was a burst of enthusiasm on wall street at the opening bell due to good news on home prices and consumer confidence. the dow indexes have given back about half of the gains. in the markets stay positive, it will be a record 20 tuesdays in a row. the markets have been higher. taking a live look, the dow is up 111. the nasdaq is up 27. s&p up 10. we're now learning that the u.s. postal service is in even deeper financial trouble than first reported. there have been discussions about cutting back service and eliminating saturday delivery but congress keeps refusing to go along with the suggestions. the postal service continues to lose $25 million a day and now postal service officials say daily mail delivery could be

threatened within a year. the problem stems from americans increasingly using the internet to write letters and pay bills. san mateo city leaders are set to weigh in tonight on plans to revamp the hillsdale shopping center. developers are proposing and overhaul of the north end of the mall. the plan would replace sears and cost plus world market with a target store and luxury sinny plex. the -- cineplex. they will meet and discuss this. breaking news in maryland. authorities are responding to a cargo train derailment. this is from the whitemarsh area, about 14 miles northeast of baltimore. you can see flames coming from the train which derailed near an industrial park. witnesses report hearing a loud explosion. hazmat crews have responded to the scene and buildings in the area are being evacuated. no reports of they injuries at this time outside of baltimore. and today on ktvu channel 2 news at 10:00 we're monitoring
