morning. it happened at 2:00 a.m. near a strip mall on macarthur boulevard. ktvu's tara moriarty is there, where at least ten shots were fired. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning, tori. the range of the shooting was pretty incredible, given the fact the shooter was only after a wallet and a cell phone. take a look. you can see this window is completely shattered, blown out by bullets and then over here the front door of this frame shop is missing. and then there's a bullet hole up there and we found a pretty large one in this hair and salon window. down there, a liquor store and you can see a bullet hole in the front door. police say around 2:00 this morning, a robber or robbers held up a man stealing his wallet and cell. they fired at least ten shots striking the victim in the leg. he's at a local hospital and is expected to survive. now, we're on the 2800 block of macarthur in the diamond neighborhood. right near 580, not too far from the greek orthodox church.

we spoke to one man who works at a restaurant across the street. he said he was surprised by the damage here. we talked to police this morning. so far no description of a suspect. investigators are gonna talk to the victim to get tter idea who they are looking for. if we come back here live, you can see there are three video cameras in the corner of this liquor store. so police will be looking at that nor some clues this morning -- for some clues this morning. live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. a 12-year-old boy accused of stabbing his own sister to death is scheduled to appear in a san andreas court. he's charged with second-degree murder in the death of 8-year- old leila foul erin the family home -- fouler in their family home. the boy told police he had seen

a man leave their family home after he found his sister dead. the boy has been in custody for the past two and a half weeks. 7:03. well, some new problems, new worries about the new bay bridge. this time, problems along the new bike path. ktvu's claudine wong is on yerba buena island right now to tell us what is going on and what's ahead for caltrans later today. claudine? >> reporter: well, this meeting today will give us an update on really all of the problems facing the new bay bridge project. i want to give you a look from yerba what main -- yerba buena island. when you talk about these problems, still a lot of unanswered questions. it still could have an effect on where this project stands in terms of cost and schedule. so we're waiting for a couple of things. first we're gonna get an update on the testing and monitoring on the remaining bolts of the

bridge. 32 broke back in march. they were part of a batch of 96. there was another match we've been talking about of some 200 other bolts and rods that came. it's still unclear if those will be addressed in terms of are they a problem or not? if they are, there will be a lot more work and the answer remember, the bolts are embedded, can't be taken out, can't be replaced. so the engineers put a steel saddle over that section. that's what's happening now. we should get an update on how long the work is gonna take and if it will delay the scheduled labor day opening. sources have told ktvu's tom vacar that for now it looks like it will not. also on the table, we'll talk about the corrosion of the cables that hold the causeway sections together. corrosion issues, a big concern there and then the bike path. this is the new problem. there are bolts along the bike path that have been sheared off and broken. they are characterizing this problem as a welding problem

and not a bolt problem. apparently, they were put in incorrectly, welded together and not put together to span. so when they did, they were just sheared off. the big thing with this meeting, they've been getting updates on how this will affect the overall project. every meeting we've done that -- and i've been to many of them -- the question has has risen, is this a problem with management? the big question, how this will affect the big picture and when they will be able to transfer traffic on the current span. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:06. new this morning, a reward is being offered for information on a northern california man wanted for killing his wife and two young daughters. police have been looking for shane miller since his family was found shot to death inside

their shasta county home on may 7th. a $10,000 reward is being offered by the nonprofit group secret witness of shasta county. after the bodies were dissed -- discovered, his truck was found in humboldt county. his dog was also found. the searches have been scaled back. local police will continue around-the-clock patrols. later today, a former east bay high school coach is due in chart on child sex abuse urge chas. barron edwards used to coach football at kennedy high school in fremont. he's facing 16 criminal counts. prosecutors say they've located two alleged victims but are looking for more. bail is set at more than $2.5 million. some lawmakers hope all of

the attention on the irs will lead to reforms in the federal tax reforms. lawmakers say the current scandal shows how complicated tax provisions give the irs too much power in enforcing the law. there is a bipartisan to make the laws more simple and rts that a u.s. drone strike in pakistan killed the number two commander of the taliban in pakistan. coming up for you at 7:15, reactions to those reports in pakistan where leaders there have been very critical of the u.s. drone operation in that country. 12 people were burned out of their homes last night in marin county. a fire started around 8:00 p.m. on the 22000 block of sir francis drake boulevard in the point reyes national seashore area. the fire destroyed two mobile homes and four cars. firefighters were able to save a nearby century-old farmhouse and the cause of the fire is under investigation. well, firefighters are working to get ahead of a wildfire in the hills most of

santa barbara. so far, the fire which began monday afternoon has burned more than 2,000 acres. last night, people who had been evacuated from about 50 homes were allowed to return. air tankers and water-dropping helicopters have been called in. right now, the fire is 10% conintad -- contained. a scare last night for passengers on a u.s. airways airplane from mineta to phoenix. the flight left the south bay yesterday afternoon but it came back a short time later after there was smoke in the cockpit. the plane landed safely, no one was hurt among the 90 passengers. the airline is trying to figure out if mechanical failure caused all of the smoke. 7:09. we want to check in with sal. see what's happening on the roads. a little bit of drizzle. hopefully not causing too many problems. >> no, not really. the problem at the bay bridge was because of an earlier crash. we had a three-car crash. no one was injured, west of the

metering lights. the bridge crews got out there quickly and moved it. but the traffic has not been the same since. it's backed up about 30 minutes. the san mateo bridge is not all that bad, neither the dumbarton bridge. i think traffic is a little bit better. every day we've seen it improve. one day in june, we'll say hey, where did everybody go? the traffic is okay on southbound between hayward and union city. i've seen a dropoff in the traffic time between hayward this morning. let's go to steve. cloudy to mostly cloudy. there's a weak little system sliding back. i know towards el granada, cassie jean said drizzle just started. there's a couple reports comes in. as at at&t park with the giants. 59, westerly breeze about 20 miles an hour. we have a pretty good onshore push. even with the temperatures,

mostly cloudy skies. a little drizzle. it will clear out. mostly sunny, breezy in the low to mid-70s. a fire caused by a train derailment near baltimore is now under control. we have video of the explosion that started the fire. >> back up. >> the freight train was carrying hazardous materials and other cargo when it hit a truck yesterday afternoon in rosedale. some of the train cars caught fire. the blast shook homes a half- mile away. the truck driver was seriously injured. federal investigators will spend the next few days trying to figure out exactly what caused the crash. a key court hear something scheduled for the palo alto man accused of murdering four family members in europe. it's a detention hearing for kevin call green. prosecutors want to hold him here while the czech republic prepares to extradite him.

police say he stabbed the victims there, then tried to burn the bodies. court documents say dahlgren had been living with the relatives for a few weeks. he was arrested last week after arriving at dullus airport. 7:15. a dean strike in pakistan, just hours -- drone strike in pakistan, just hours ago reportedly killed a top leader of the taliban. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, pakistan says the u.s. is behind the attack. kyla? >> reporter: dave, pakistani intelligence officials say the drone killed the number two leader as well as his close aide. the taliban said it would not confirm or deny the reports. i put calls in this morning to the cia and the associated press. neither is confirming anything so far. two drones were filed near the border killing four people. the talabani's death would be a

blow. this morning's deadly drone strike comes less than a week after president obama stood by the u.s. drone policy but also said it would be scaled back. coming up in 15 minutes, a u.s. military commander is giving a life briefing from afghanistan to the media on current operations. we'll listen in to see if he says anything about the u.s. drone strike in pakistan. i will have an update next hour. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. new reports that china will conduct a military exercise next week testing out what it calls digital units. the digital soldiers are computer operators. they gather intelligence, they assess combat situations and they control troop movements. all of this comes as the pentagon accuses china as using computer hackers to steal

american medical technology. president obama will talk next week when they meet next week in southern california. a hospital in the north bay says an employee accidentally published private information on the website. sonoma valley hospital says more than 1300 patients were affected. names, surgeons, dates of procedures, charges and the name of the patient's's insurance information. that information was discovered february 14th but it was not discovered by state officials until the middle of april. affected patients were told about this several weeks ago. the hospital says it's taking measures to make sure this does not happen again. president obama had a little explaining to do last night during a reception at the white house. he was attended an asian- american and pacific islander heritage event when he wound up with lipstick on his collar. >> i think the -- i think i know the culprit. jessica san sanchez.

[laughter] >> jessica sanchez was the runner-up on "american idol" last year and was one of the performers at the white house last night. two home invasion suspects are wanted for breaking into a woman's santa rosa home and tying her up in front of her 3- year-old. police it happened on inglewood drive around 12:40 yesterday afternoon. the women reported two women anput her child under a house blanket. then they robbed the house of cash and valuables. the woman was unable to untie herself and call 911. she and the child were not hurt. 7:19. there's new report that shows mothers are the primary or even the only source of income for 40% of all income.

more than 5 million hers are married mothers with higher incomes than their husband's. total incomes for them $85,000. the average income for single mothers, $23,000. southern california california security guards are getting ready to goen to strike next month. at noon bay area church leaders plan to bless their picket signs. workers say their contract with a.b.m. security and universal protection security expired six monthsing ago and there's been little progress towards a new contract. they say the biggest issue how much they will have to pay for health insurance. we know that smoking is bad for humans but a new study says that cigarette butts may be good for certain nesting birds. a team of mexican researchers found that births' nests that contain remnants of cigarette buts had fewer parasites than those with no butts. scientists also say that birds

this is a rescue in crescent city. rescue personnel helping a woman friday night had to be rescued themselves. they were stranded for five hours before a helicopter arrived and lifted them to safely. several were in the early stages of hypothermia. the woman was flown to be treated for head injuries, broken bones and cuts. the newest crew of the international space station, they just arrived and their temporary home. karen nyberg and her crew members circled nine times before docking. they were greeted by the crew already there. the new crew will spend six months conducting experiments and doing four spacewalks. but they are home now. believe it or not, a

police in palo alto make two dozen arrests. janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: a couple of officers i spoke to said they feel like things are working. it's been quiet overnight. they haven't had a shooting since this crackdown overnight. these officers are, woulding sometimes 11, 12 days -- are working sometimes 1, 12 days straight -- 11 days, 12 days straight. since the chief declared a crime emergency a week ago, 27 people have been arrested, including gang members. there is an internal power struggle going on inside that gang. in a two-week period of time, there was a shooting and jose

qinteros was killed. the chief has applied a special task and there will be a meeting to discuss the crime wave. he wants feedback from the community. we asked people if extra enforcement has made them feel safer. >> yes, but i think we need more, more police or more patrolling. i don't think it's enough. i think if they do more or more police, we can be more safe. >> reporter: the chief has met with ex-gang members and outreach workers who already started to track down current gang members. e department says maintain double the amount of patrol officers during critical time periods. it's doing that by canceling days off that are scheduled. tonight's town hall meeting is at 6:00 p.m.

thanksgiving weekend crash that killed two of his daughters. investigators say arvin tendell and his family were on their way home from an all-night plaque friday shopping trip when he dozed off and flipped his suv. two of his daughters died. his wife was hurt. the santa clara county district attorney's office will have the final decisions on the charges. federal investigators say someone stole male from the back of a -- mail from the back of a truck. it happened in oakland on monday, may 13th. a monday was caught on camera -- man was caught on camera stealing male at market street while the truck was at a red light. the man broke out the back of the mail truck, grabbed what he could and just walked away. >> it seems a little bit more daring and brazen. but again, it doesn't matter. he broke into the truck, the crime's been committed.

of san ramon city police officers guards the gates as well. one of the protesters is laura. she's with a group. why are you here today? >> i'm here with justice in nigeria now. i spent time there with a community, which are chevron host communities. chevron had a huge gas rig explosion in january 201 that poisoned those communities, poisoned the waters. they were fisher people. they can no longer live. chevron provided meager materials that was not much more than a few bags of rice. so i'm here as their voice to ask when chevron is going to make recompence to the community and talk about the poor record and mismanagement. >> reporter: and i understand there will be a petition as

well to, i guess, fire the ceo as well. are you part of that petition? >> yes. we're all here to say that watson has led this company into a ditch. the example of this gas rig explosion is a clear example of that. their own employee, platform manager, called the company to tell him the rig was unstable and begged them to fly the workers off and in fact the company refused to do so. and then it exlowed and killed that -- exploded and killed that very manager who called them to tell them the rig was unable and proceeded to poison the communities. >> reporter: thank you, laura. several protesters are here. we did try to contact chevron. we did not receive a response. they sent a statement out saying they spent hundreds of millions of dollars in community efforts as we will.

stocks are opening much lower on wall street pushing the dow jones down from a record high. this is a case of good news, maybe bad news for investors which means the fed could end their economic stimulus program. the dow is currently down 146. the nasdaq is down 30 and the s&p, down 15. apple chief's executive tim cook says he has no plans to change apple's unwritten policy

being done. there are still a lot of unknowns. we'll get three updates, more on the fix being done on the shipment. second, more testing on the 192 other bolts that came from that same company in a 2010 shipment and third more on the long-term assessment for this bridge. remember, the steel used in those bolts was also used to make about 2,000 other fasteners on the bridge, less of a concern those will be safety issues. what we had learned to -- what we had learned to hope was more on timing, when when it will open. the bridge could still open on time on labor day. you have a lot that could delay that. and the steel saddles designed to fix the broken bolt problem are not even made yet. >> the steel saddle system that will be installed at pier e-2,

appearing alongside offensive posts. some nissan ads were automatically placed next to images of abused women tasted by facebook users -- posted by facebook users. there's been lobbying to remove the content. some brands have suspended their marketing campaigns. for its part, facebook released a lengthy statement. the company says it aims to provide a respectable platform where people with share freely and chooses to allow content that's offensive or controversy in the name of freedom of expression. it only bans content seemed to be directly -- deemed to be directly harmful. still, the company admits the system to remove hate speech has failed. though facebook will review the guidelines it uses to evaluate reports of hate speech, update training for the teams that review those reports, increase the accountability of the creators of intensive content and establish direct lines of communication with

representatives of groups working to stop hate speech. google hopes to get its plan to wi-fi the world off the ground. the high-tech giant wants to bring the entertainment to underdeveloped and remote parts of the world including southeast asia and releasing special balloons to broadcast wireless connections to small villages. this approach could include internet speeds in internet areas. google is working -- is working upon a satellite-based system that broadcast over hundreds of miles. city officials in san jose can't give the police officers a big raise partly because of a voter-approved measure. a couple of weeks ago, the city offered a 9% raise over two years. but now in it's final position to the arbitration panel. the city is proposing no raises at all. officials say they are bound by arbitration rim its -- limits that voters approved in 2010. the police union wants them to

reverse a 10% pay cut by july of next year. concerns about safety. that's at the top of the agenda in new contract talks for b.a.r.t. employees. union says a hiring freeze is to blame for employee injuries since 2009. they say the b.a.r.t. station agents often work alone despite a possible risk of an attack. 31 assaults on station agents were reported in 2012. that's up from only nine assaults in 2009. 8:08 is the time. we want to check in with sal, see what's happening on the roads. we're getting a close eye at -- look at a consumer camera. sal? >> we're looking at the drive into san francisco here, northbound 280 is where the car is just approaching highway 101. so you will see traffic coming through here on northbound 280 in san francisco. it is moving alongock. it's a little -- along okay. it's a little slow. you can see traffic is okay.

when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see slow traffic. we had a couple of earlier incidents on the bridge. one was a three-car crash with no injuries. the other was a stalled vehicle. they cleared that out. things are improving a little bit. there was a car on fire, southbound 101, it was on the shoulder, it wasn't on the lanes. you can imagine that people are slowing to take a look at it. and the fire department is there. the car fire is out but they still have to tow the car away. if you are trying to get down the peninsula, i would recommend using 280 instead of 101 at this point. we're also gonna take a look at highway 4 because it's improving a little bit. last time i showed it to you, the road sensors were picking up a lot slow traffic. but now some of the traffic is on 680 between pleasant hill and walnut creek. you will see slowing there. here's steve. >> a little bit of sun out there. mostly sunny, napa county, parts of solano county. there's still the low of gray out. a decent system coming by, not giving us much rain but it gave us a lot of drizzle.

experience unsafe work conditions but immation rights activists say workers have no recourse if their employer attempts to have them deported in response to a complaint. the bill goes to the state assembly. 8:17. santa clara county considering raising the minimum wage. last november, san jose voters approved a measure increasing the minimum wage from $8 to $10. now there is a similar proposal for unincorporated parts of the county. supporters say people can't live on $8 an hour. san jose civilly convalley chamber of commerce which opposes the minimum wage hike, they haven't taken a position on this latest proposal yet. a man in belmont is facing criminal charges for allegedly using bear repellent to attack an apartment manager. police say steven plumber confronted the employee yesterday about news from maintenance being done on an apartment unit. they say plumber hit the manager in the face, then attacked him with pepper spray

used to repel wild animals. the manager was later treated at the apartment complex. he did not have to be hospitalized. it is 8:18. daly city is looking at a new project that could protect local neighborhoods from flooding. under the planned improvements, some of the water from the canal will be diverted into san francisco's lake merced. supporters say the project would also be a win for the city because it would he restore dwindling water levels at lake merced. well, the san jose sharks' season, it's over after losing game 7 of a tense, hard-fought playoff series with the defending stanley cup champs. the los angeles kings scored two goals in a three-minute span in the second period. that's all they needed. their goalie was just too good. the sharks lost 2-1. so the kings will face the winner of tonight's game 7 between detroit and chicago.

8:19. the napa valley expo is reporting bigger-than-expected profits from the bottle rock festival. bottle rock will pay the expo more than $752,000. after they pay some bills, the expo will have more than $580,000 in profit. the numbers came out during the first public statements on the festival. two more meetings are scheduled for tomorrow. justin bieber, now under investigation for reckless driving. the la county sheriff's department has received several complaints of bieber speeding around at speedway speeds in his gated neighborhood this week. one of the calls came from former nfl star keyshawn johnson. the la county district attorney is considering possibly filing misdemeanor charges against justin bieber. >> i'm sure a nice neighborhood. >> very nice.

from being tried as an adult because he's so young. a judge, not a jury, will decide his fate. it will probably be a juvenile detention until he's 23 years old. new information this morning, a reward being offered for information on a northern california man wanted for killing his wife and two young daughters. police have been searching for shane miller since his family was found shot to death in their home in shasta county on may 7th. a $10,000 reward is being offered by secret witness of shasta county. shortly after the bodies were found, miller's truck was found, about 200 miles away in humboldt county and his dog gigi was also found. police say the search efforts have been scaled back. other agencies are leading the area -- leaving the area but the local police will continue to search where the truck was found. later today, a former east bay high school football coach is due in court. he will be facing child sex

abuse charges. 51-year-old barron edwards coached football at kennedy high in richmond. he faces 16 criminal counts. prosecutors say they've located two alleged sex abuse victims but there may be more. his bail is set at more than $2.5 million. 8:33. a hospital in the north bay says an employee accidentally published private medical information on its website. sonoma valley hospital says more than 1300 patients were affected. information included names, surgeons, dates of procedures, charges and the name of the patients' insurance company. the date was published february 14th but was not discovered by state health officials until mid-april. affected patients were told several weeks ago, the hospital says it has taken measures to ensure the mistake is not repeated. happening now -- chevron shareholders are meeting in san ramon and protesters are out in

force. ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores is live with the protesters' concern about chevron's political influence and also its safety record. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. several protesters are behind me here. lined up on bollen jordanian road. they are -- bowl lynnjer road. they are and the meeting began a half-hour ago. they are hoping to get their message across. several groups and even the mayor of richmond plan on being there. they are denouncing chevron's local political contributions. others are here because of what they say is the company's track record here on safety and overseas. many remember the richmond refinery fire. many will be in the shareholders' meeting today and plan to hand over a 20,000- signature petition that calls for the ceo, john watson, to be fired. they say because the company

spent millions of dollars in richmond. >> they've tried to have richmond leaders elected by putting millions of dollars in that election. they try to bulldoze over the community and democracy. >> reporter: we've tried several times to get a response from chevron. we've not gotten one. there said they've been a part of the community for a long time and have invested in the community for the past few years. protesters will be out here throughout the morning. along with the protesters there a really charge security presence, both internally and the city of san ramon. police officers are here as well if it gets too rowdy. that doesn't appear that will happen. protesters say they will be here all morning.

weather today, a day after tornadoes hit kansas, michigan, ohio and pennsylvania. severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are expected from south dakota to central texas. the warning comes after this huge tornado swept through benington, kansas last night, destroying one home. four tornadoes also struck northeast kansas on monday destroying two businesses and some homes in the town of marysville. more money will be poured into oklahoma today. several several country music stars will hold a telethon in oklahoma city called "healing the heartland." many performers are from oklahoma. the telethon will benefit the united way of central oklahoma. the 12-year-old boy who drowned in an antioch canal last weekend was trying to

retrieve his shoe. he and two other boys were throwing rocks into the canal. the boy's flip-flops slipped in the water. the water looks calm there but was moving quickly under the service. his body was found about a university whatter mile downstream from where he fell in. the governor of iowa has declared a disaster in te counties after torrential rain caused widespread flooding. as much as 8 inches fell in part, of the state. at least one death has been reported after an elderly man in an suv was swept away. ten state highways are closed. 8:41. the expanding problem of stolen cell phones here in the bay area and how the phone companies are reacting. now, san francisco police chief greg su has stolen -- greg suhr says there ought to be a national registry by the cell phone companies so that when a cell phone is stolen, it can be

she says the quake woke her up. the scene on her window fell off, shook things up and scared her roommates as well. that quake was felt from bakersfield to manhattan beach. and bay bridge officials meet this afternoon. they will give an update on the construction on the new bay bridge span. while they probably won't announce today if it will open on labor day weekend, ktvu has learned the opening is on schedule for now. crews have run into several major problems including 32 seismic bolts found defective two months after they were installed. two 13-year-olds from the bay area are competing right now in the national spelling bee. pam cook is watching to see how they are doing. it's always a little humbling seeing the words they can spell. >> oh, my, yes. most of them had to give up. our local spellers are number to and 24. they made it into round three. round two just ended about five minutes ago. round three will continue in

into flames and the explosion shook an area about a half- mile. the truck driver involved was seriously hurt. federal investigators will take the next couple of days trying to determine what caused that crash. anhaim police say a dry ice explosion at disneyland is the latest in a string of similar events. yesterday afternoon, security evacuated toon town after an explosion in a trash can. people reported hearing a loud boom and seeing the lid blow off. anaheim police say it appears to have been caused by dry ice put in a plastic bottle. no one was injuredden the section reopened a couple of hours later. sal, the toll plaza getting any better? >> a little bit better, finally. i think we'll gonna start to see improvement for sure as the month wears on. but the bay bridge has not improved. that's because of earlier issues. still quite a delay. if you want to wait around, i think it will get better by 10:00. whos that too time -- who has
