a san mateo house fire broke out shortly after midnight. why firefighters are still on scene mopping up hot spots. an 8-year-old child hit by a car in the east bay. the new information we just received this morning. and disastrous flooding that is turning roads into rivers. we are going to see -- you're going to see what's happening right now in the midwest. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 morning news. >> good morning. thank you for joining us on this thursday morning, may 30th. almost the end of may. i'm pam cook. >> moving right along. good morning, everybody. i'm brian flores in for dave clark today. get you out the door with weather and traffic beginning with steve paulson this morning. >> little warmer, little cooler this morning because we don't have much in the way of any low clouds. there are some patchy low clouds but burning off quick and sunshine today and temperatures coming up but still no westerly breeze so not a huge jump but getting near average for most 70s, 80s

inland, 60s closer to the beaches. highway four, very nice drive so far in bay point, getting slowing in antioch from antioch to pittsburg. looking at the commute in san francisco, it is a nice start, remember, there is a daytime baseball game today, we will tell you more about that and the rest of the commute coming up. we are following breaking news in oakland where our cameras caught exclusive pictures of a marijuana grow in a warehouse. firefighters found it after responding to reports of smoke from a warehouse on 51st avenue. ktvu channel 2 news reporter tara moriarty is on the scene where firefighters say the grow house operation wasn't the only thing going on. >> reporter: firefighters told us that they believe that the growers were actually using an auto repair shop as a front for their marijuana grow operation. this is the building that we are talking about right here. it's the gold building that you see behind me. it was so dangerous, this fire, the way that the growers had rigged the operation that crews actually had to leave the

building after first arriving inside. there were wires dangling and let's take a look at this exclusive video. it shows 65 to 70 mature plants that firefighters found around 4:15 this morning, someone passing by the warehouse off east 12th and 51st avenue noticed smoke and call 911. fire crews believe that the illegal wiring is what sparked this fire. the chief said she didn't want to put her crews in jeopardy. she called them out after she saw all of the dangling wires. they called pg&e and they cut the wires to the building and firefighters were able to get the flames out within minutes. they were up on ladders ventilating the roof when we first arrived about half an hour ago. pg&e still here. they have turned off the power and meanwhile oakland police are taking over this investigation. coming up we are going to tell you why the battalion chief thinks someone else actually tried to put out this fire before her crews even arrived. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. crews still on the scene of

an early morning house fire on the peninsula that started shortly before 1:00 this morning in the san mateo hills. katie utehs joins us from the fire scene where sunrise now giving us a better look at this damage. >> reporter: you can really see the extent of the damage. i'll step out of the way so you can start looking at this house. it is an older home that was under construction. you can see there's a lot of charring along the roofline, there's still some of the foam and water left over from that attack this morning. firefighters are still on scene mopping up the hot spot. we will see them peeking in and out of the windows, they have been walking in and out of the house watching for flare-ups and smoke. there has been some smoke on scene. let me show you some of the video shot overnight. you can see the flames shot out of the roof. the home is currently being remodeled so no one was home at the time of the fire which sparked shortly after midnight. firefighters tell me it was someone from across the canyon about a quarter mile away who saw the flames shooting from the roof. they are the ones who called 911. now, that person was actually

able to point this to the exact street of the home. we are here on view ridge drive. that helped firefighters get here more quickly and as firefighters worked to knock down the flames, they battled layers of construction materials. >> there's a couple of layers of roofing so because they had the original layer of roof, they put a roof on top of a roof, like a metal clasp roof itself so lots of voids and spaces. >> reporter: i'm told the fire damaged both floors and the attic of this home. firefighters say the home was connected to electricity but not gas and they are still working to determine the cause of the fire. again, there was no one home at the time the fire started. the investigator is expected to arrive on scene around 9:00 this morning. of course this daylight will help aid them in figuring out where this fire started. and coming up at 6:45 i'll have more on what made this home particularly dangerous for firefighters to battle that morning fire. live in san mateo, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. a man hit by a caltrain in san francisco. that happened at about midnight

at mission bay drive. caltrain says the man was hit by the last northbound train. he was taken to the hospital. we do not know his condition at this time. there were about 50 passengers on the train as well but they were not hurt. the cause of the crash still under investigation. we have new information this morning about an 8-year- old boy hit by a car in hayward. the boy was hit in a crosswalk just after 8:00 last night at hisperian boulevard and west tennyson. an 18-year-old driver called police she hit the boy. witnesses and the driver say she had the green light and the boy ran into traffic. he is recovering at oakland children's hospital. the driver is not facing any charges. a sex offender wanted by san jose police is now in custody after being found in north carolina. 34-year-old nigel alan garcia was found last week living under a different name and volunteering as a youth baseball coach. he was wanted by san jose police for violating his sex

offender registration requirements. north carolina police say he had to be tased because he refused to return to california alive. the midwest part of the u.s. bracing for more rain and more flooding. the last storm buried cars in several feet of water in chicago. rivers in illinois, missouri and iowa are now rising again. the national weather service predicts some areas could receive up to half a foot of rain by tomorrow. forecasters say the mississippi river could reach its highest level in st. louis in nearly 20 years. well, the people of moore, oklahoma try to recover from last week's deadly tornado, they are dealing with another round of severe weather. they are worrying that they may be even less prepared this time. the tornado sirens that they normally rely on were destroyed or damaged last week. supplies such as weather radios are sold out, power still out to a few hundred people 10 days after that tornado. back here at home, a small earthquake rattled the gilroy area. the 2.8 magnitude quake hit

about 11:30 last night. it could be felt in gilroy, ben leohmann, watsonville and san martine. it did not last long and they have not received any calls of damage or injuries. 6:06. sal right now. sal, you're looking at the south bay. how is it looking out there? >> looks pretty good. looking at the south bay road from milpitas over to the main part of the valley and that would be 237 and it's actually looking very nice. now, might get crowded later but right now is a good opportunity to get over there to 101, sun vail, that -- sunnyvale, that area with no major issues. the metering lights haven't been turned on yet. although it is getting crowded, they should be coming on soon. it does look good into san francisco. driving between hayward and union city, traffic time there pretty low for this time of the morning from hayward to fremont a nice drive. now let's go to steve. >> thank you. mostly clear skies, patches of few low clouds around but

new this morning, a man charged with killing a british soldier in a suspected terrorist attack is due in a london courtroom today. last night scotland yard charged 22-year-old michael adaybreak wally -- adabawali with murder. police arrested him and arrested a second suspect at the scene. rigby's death was the first suspected terrorist attack on british soil since the london subway bombings in july of 2005. the u.s. soldier accused of

killing 16 afghan villagers could plead guilty. a staff sergeant says his client took the plea deal in order to avoid the death penalty. last year's massacre is considered to be one of the worst war crimes in the war in afghanistan. if approved, he will face a life in prison sentence. a congressional delegation in russia this week to find out whether better cooperation between the fbi and russian intelligence could have prevented the boston marathon bombings. the lawmakers are scheduled to meet with russian security. they took part in a wreath laying ceremony in moscow to honor victims of a bombing in 2010 blamed on militants from chechnya. the boston bombing suspects were also from chechnya. russia warned the fbi that it considered the older brother a potential threat. >> one of the things we want to find out is whether or not the fbi followed through on all of the information that was given to them. >> fbi agents interviewed the older brother in 2011 but said they did not find any cause for

concern. as that delegation tries to improve relations with russia, new action in syria is threatening that strained relationship. syria's president confirms his government received the first shipment of long range air defense missiles from russia. as ktvu's kyla campbell reports from our washon, thobama administration condemned that move. >> reporter: white house spokesman jay corny says -- carney says this insurgency of weapons in syria will only escalate the civil war and the shipment of air defense missiles has israel threatening action against syria. israel carried out several airstrikes in syria in recent months to destroy weapons that were bound for hezbollah, a muslim group committed to targeting israel. israel is readying its military forces to take out more deliveries of weapons. the u.s. is trying to put an end to the civil war in syria and wants to hold peace talks in the coming weeks. syria officials say they will attend but opposition groups say this morning the syrian government is carrying out

massacres so they will not attend peace talks. senator john mccain just met with rebels in syria and he is calling for more u.s. involvement in that civil war. i just reached out to my white house contact for more information and reaction to that but so far i have not heard back this morning. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. 6:15. and a warning for shoppers at the broadway plaza center in walnut creek. police released a surveillance photo of an attempted robbery suspect. before 9:00 last night a woman left nordstrom and entered the second story parking garage. a man believed to be around 18 years old came behind and grabbed her purse. the two people then struggled. the suspect then ran away when another woman walked by. the victim was not hurt and her purse was not stolen. police now arrested a san jose man who nearly died after exchanging gun fire with police during a standoff in newark earlier this month. that arrest came while 50-year- old kevin rose continues his

recovery in the hospital. yesterday police served an arrest warrant for several charges tied to the may 17th shootout. the suspect booked into jail once released from the hoital. a new development this morning from the jerry sandusky scandal. the family of late penn state football coach joe paterno will sue the ncaa today over landmark sanctions against the university. penn state was fined $60 million, it lost scholarships and banned from playing in bowl games for four years due to its inability to address child sex abuse allegations. the lawsuit claims that the ncaa rushed to judgment and skipped due process. paterno's family wants to overturn the sanctions and ask for unspecified damages which they would donate to charity. san jose mayor chuck reed says silicon valley schools have to do a better job of bridging the achievement gap. a new report shows 20% of latinos students in san mateo and santa clara counties qualifies for -- qualify for state universities and just 22%

of african-american students qualify. that's compared to 53% of white students and 71% of asian students. yesterday mayor reed called the numbers dismal but also recognizes that the 10 schools where latino students improved and said other schools should follow their lead. the berkeley city council is discussing a ban on smoking in the city's apartments in group housing arrangements. one proposal would ban smoking at multiunit housing. that includes apartments, senior living facilities, fraternities and sa reports sororities. redwood city stop using red light cameras to reduce traffic accidents. it will turn to new computer software that breaks down information such as pin pointing areas with the most citations, collisions and dui arrests. police would use the data to find patterns and shift resources to needed areas. right now 6:17. check back in with sal. what are you covering, sal?

>> looking at the toll plaza, filled in coming into the city. the metering lights have gone on meaning there's a bigger backup at the toll plaza. also looking at highway four which is getting busier, getting up to the grade. i skipped highway 4 and ot only bay point. the sun is kind of not allowing us to see such a great picture right now of the toll plaza but it is backed up for about a 15 to 20 minute delay. if you're trying to catch a flight at sfo, the ride there from san francisco or on the peninsula looks good along highway 101. 6:18. let's go to steve. >> thank you. very good morning. sunrise over the big city. there you are. mostly sunny here today. i mean, we have patchy low clouds but there won't be too much left. yesterthat gray skies and drizzle. that's all gone except for patchy low clouds. temperatures are cooler, though this morning but warmer this afternoon. we should be average this time of year about 65 to 80 across

the board. temperatures have been way below for a good seven, eight days. today we are getting near average. napa yesterday 77, 82 today, 66 san francisco after 64 yesterday. loor moor 72 yesterday, 79 today. and san jose very nice 70, we will go 76. looks like a beautiful day for a baseball, 12:45, sunny, nice, high 66 degrees. still a west wind in place, 44 in napa and middletown 44, 40s for santa rosa, also san rafael, novato, close for some, upper 40s in walnut creek. livermore 50, 51 fairfield, 50 in san francisco, redwood city 51. everything starting to move in high pressure's direction. you can see that building in, that will be here tomorrow, friday into saturday but not sticking around. we will start to see a jump in those temps today after cool lows and patchy fog but sunny and warmer weather takes over today for most, still 60s mainly on the coast but patchy low clouds, a west wind really you need a north or northeast to really kind of jack those temps up but it will be happening today, days are much,

much longer, 60s, 70s and some 80s but pretty close to where we should be this time of year, slightly below some, slightly above others. saturday the warmest day, cooler sunday, much cooler monday. >> thank you, steve. 6:19. a new sign the housing market is recovering. realty track reports sales of home in foreclosure fell sharply during the first part of this year. 190,000 houses in closure sold between january and march, that's 21% of total home sales. at the worst the housing crisis foreclosed homes made up 45% of all home sales. tighter inventory and low interest rates are the improvement. 10 large public university systems joining forces with practice sara -- prasara. schools will incorporate the massive open online courses into their own teaching. some will use it to prepare students for college work while others will use it for oncampus

mother nature was no match for the groundskeepers at texas rangers ballpark in arlington. workers scrambled to cover the field before last night's game against the arizona diamondbacks, but just those gusty winds whipped the tarp all around, almost taking some of the groundskeepers with it. by the time they finally pinned the tarp down, the field was already soaked and the game had to be postponed. the oakland as will go for a screen against san francisco giants at at&t park today. >> it is look out. and nobody catches it. >> oh, boy. once again the giants do not look like baseball's defending world series champions during last night's game at at&t park. the as, though looked good. defeated the giants 9-6. it was the giants' third loss in a row to the as in the bay bridge

series. first pitch day game at 12:45. >> be nice weather. locked out mechanics from vallejo's six flags discovery kingdom expected back on the picket line this morning. the mechanics maintain the 40 rides at the park and they say texas based six flags offered them a new contract last fall that included a raise but no overtime for working more than five consecutive days. the mechanics say other issues include a high turnover rate and low hourly wages. >> with the contract that they want us to sign, i will be -- i will make less than i make now, so they gave me no choice but to stand out here and try to fight for a couple bucks more. >> six flags says it has brought in replacement workers from other theme parks and that some salary workers are trained on ride maintenance. that lockout -- the locked-out mechanics are advising people not to visit the park or ride the rides until the dispute has been settled.

tv host james lipton is revealing details about his surprising past. the host of inside the actor studio recently told parade magazine that's he worked as a pimp in paris during the 1950s. he said he was introduced to the lifestyle by a friend who was a prostitute. he says he represented her and a group of her friends and before long, he had a roaring business. time now 6:25. hopefully there's no surprises on the traffic world out there. sal, how is it looking like out there? >> we have a new crash, brian, that i'm going to tell you about in just a moment. but first of all, let's go out and take a look at the biggest commute and that would be the santa clara valley commute 281, 101, 87, those are all doing very well. if you're driving on the sunol grade, the traffic here looks good. we have a new accident in livermore eastbound 580 at isabel, this crash involving a motorcycle, even though it's in the center divider, the fire department on the way. this could cause traffic going the other way to slow down. now let's go to steve. >> thank you. mostly clear, some patchy low clouds around, couple of high clouds but overall a lot

very latest read on what it looks like we are in store for today. little bit of a mixed picture, maybe a slightly higher opening. we got some good earnings in this morning, just a little bit ago, costco beating the streets and krispy kreme also good numbers, doughnuts. there's the opening bell live. we will have all the business news coming up. >> doughnuts always good. thursday, may 30th. i'm brian flores. dave clark has the morning off. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. we are continuing to follow breaking news now in the south bay. one person is dead in a shooting that happened just a short time ago. ktvu's janine de la vega is arrived on the scene just minutes ago and we understand this shooting happened right near a school, kids getting ready to head off there i'm sure this morning. >> reporter: we haven't seen any children here yet, and that's lucky because a lot of crime tape and a lot of police around here. this is near santee school. police are down the road here

near santee and audubon drive because at about 5:20 people heard screaming and they heard gunshots being fired in this area and when officers arrived, they found a man. they are saying he is a latino male, maybe around 19 or 20 years old, face down, lying in a grassy area, kind of maybe near the sidewalk. right now they are doing a canvass of the naked trying to see if they can find any witnesses, trying to see who they can talk to. again, we just arrived moments ago so police are just in the preliminary stages of their investigation. the homicide unit has not arrived yet but this is what police -- a police lieutenant told me a short time ago. >> we found the victim face down on the corner of santee and audubon and at this point it's early in the investigation, we are canvassing the neighborhood, the homicide unit en route and we have a lot of work to still do on this one.

>> reporter: you know, this comes on the heels of a crime prevention meeting that took place last night here in the city because many residents are concerned about the number of shootings and we just had three homicides that happened over the weekend. so this homicide today this morning makes it 20 homicides in the city of san jose so far this year, and we are already on pace to match last year's high. so, again, we are going to be staying here trying to find out more information. there is somebody here, a gentleman who is a janitor who mentioned to me that he always waits for one of his family members who he works with at at that corner so he's very concerned, worried if it's his family member. again, we don't know the identity of the person yet. we just know that gunshots were fired and that a man is dead. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. reports of smoke leads to the discovery of a marijuana

grow operation in oakland and only ktvu has video of what firefighters found. the operation was discovered at a warehouse on 51st avenue, ktvu channel 2 news reporter tara moriarty is there where the fire chief says something else was found inside the warehouse. tara. found a ter: that's right. fire extinguisher on the floor inside this warehouse so they actually think someone else tried to put out the flames before they even arrived. take a look at our executive video of what we have when firefighters stumbled upon inside the warehouse here off east 12th and 51st avenue around 4:15 this morning. 65 to 70 mature plants. they say the growers were using an auto repair shop as a front for their illegal business. now, crews were able to get the flames out within minutes but they had to pull out after they first arrived because conditions inside were just too dangerous. >> we have high voltage and we had numerous wires hanging from the ceiling and such so at that point we extinguished the fire so at that point it wasn't safe for us to be in there so we

pulled everyone out and waited for the arrival of pg&e so they could cut the wires to the building. >> reporter: fire crews believe the illegal wiring is what sparked this fire. and meanwhile oakland police taking over the investigation. back here live you can see they are just closing the gate here. they have boarded up the warehouse and are taking off. we are live in oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. critical questions remain in oakland's first deadly officer-involved shooting in more than a year. it happened yesterday afternoon in east oakland during an investigation into a stolen gun. police tried to stop a car with three men inside at 90th avenue and plymouth street but the car sped away to 77th and bancroft avenues where the suspects got out of the car and ran in different directions. that led to the deadly shooting. >> one of our officers encountered the subject who was armed at the time. the officer at that time discharged his firearm. >> the man was taken to highland hospital where he later died. police are not saying what prompted the officers to shoot.

officers arrested the other two suspects without incident. new this morning, word that president obama will nominee a former bush administration -- nominate a former bush administration to head the fbi. according to various sources, the president will no, ma'am name james -- nominate james comey, under george w. bush. the term of robert mueller is up in september. a muslim advocacy group calling for an investigation into the death of a chechen immigrant who was shot to death by authorities last week in florida while being questioned about his ties to one of the boston bombing suspects. the fbi says 27-year-old ibragim todashev was killed after he became violent during questioning. the council says it wants to know if excessive force was used or whether todashev's rights were violated. the fbi says during the questioning todashev suddenly flipped over a table and lunged at an fbi agent with a sword. some news organizations are refusing to meet with attorney

general eric holder because of holder's insistence that the meetings be off the record. president obama asked holder to set up the meetings with media executives to discuss guidelines on how the federal government should handle leak vestigations. it follows revelations of the justice department's secret gathering of reporters' phone records and e-mails. the "new york times" and the associated press says they won't attend the meetings unless they are on the record. and the debate over gun control is now linked to threatening letters targeting new york city mayor michael bloomberg. coming up at 6:45, the dangerous substance found in the letters and how bloomberg is responding. electric car make tesla is expected to make a big announcement about its charging stations today. the palo alto based company plans to triple the number of supercharging stations by the end of next month. the stations would be added across the country allowing people to drive coast to coast without having to worry about where to charge their car. right now there are six supercharging stations

including one in gilroy. and legislation to make electric car charging stations more accessible cleared a major hurdle in sacramento. the state senate passed a bill to make electric car stations similar to gas stations by allowing people to use credit cards or other payments. right now electric car drivers have to pay a subscription fee or join a club to use public charging stations in california. the measure now goes to the state assembly. right now 6:36, back over to sal. sal, how is the commute? >> getting a little bit more crowded but we do have a crash in livermore that is -- that might affect the westbound commute even though it happened eastbound heading away from pleasnaton toward the valley. eastbound 580 near isabel, westbound 580 you might see slow traffic because the emergency vehicles are in the center divide, people slowing down to take a look so westbound 580 going to be slow. this morning between hayward, union city and fremont, the drive time about 16 minutes here which is not bad. sometimes it's double that so we are getting a little bit of a break at least for now. and if you drive across the

bridge, san mateo or dunbarton bridge you'll find traffic on 101 doing pretty well. live pictures now, golden gate bridge, traffic here looks good, crowded at the bay bridge for about a 15 minute delay and if you are driving in san francisco on the freeways, 280 and 101, they look good, 6:37. go to steve. >> thank you, sal. patchy low clouds around, disappear pretty fast here but we have some around, mainly on the san mateo coast but a little bit inland but doesn't stand much of a chance. big difference compared to yesterday for sure and much cooler lows but warmer on these afternoon temps, napa 77 yesterday, 64 in san francisco, livermore was 72, that's it. should be closer to about 81 or 82, san jose was only 70, 76 today, 79 for livermore and 66 san francisco, just 2 degrees warmer. it will be sunny today, looks nice, breezy out of the west, can't lose the west wind yet but sunny, 66 degrees we will say at game time to looks pretty good. system gave us very cool weather has been rotating out of the area so high pressure is

following right now. breaking news in san jose, we first reported about 15 minutes ago. this is a live picture from the area of santee and audubon drive. lots of police cars there. they are canvassing the neighborhood investigating a deadly shooting there. someone heard screams and then gun fire around 5:20 this morning near an elementary school. the victim was a young man found face down. ktvu's janine de la vega will have a live report at the top of the hour. a marijuana grow operation found in oakland this morning after firefighters responded to the smell of smoke coming from a warehouse on 51st street. firefighters say they found about 70 plants and a lot of illegal electrical wiring. the warehouse also housed an auto repair shop. other top story, crews still on the scene of an early morning house fire on the peninsula. it started shortly before 1:00 in the san mateo hills. ktvu's katie utehs joins us live from the fire scene where crews are still dealing with the hot spots. katie. >> reporter: absolutely and the morning sun is really

illuminating the fire damage done to this home that is currently being remodel. take a look over my left shoulder, you can see the roofline where there's foam and water dripping just a few moments ago before you guys came out live to us, firefighters were spraying down a hot spot on the roof and the damage is quite extensive. i peeked through the windows which appear to be new vinyl windows and the interior is pretty badly damaged. because the home is being worked on, no one is living here. now, that's good because nobody was injured but it did delay the call for help. firefighters say someone from across the canyon about a quarter mile away saw the flames shooting out of the roof and that's when the person called 911 shortly before 1:00 a.m. the firefighters worked to knock down the flames, they battled two layers of roofing, an old wooden roof and a more modern roof on top which made this home dangerous and unstable for those firefighters. >> made it difficult for our firefighters, we kept them off the entire -- because the

entire structure supporting the roof was burning. >> reporter: firefighters tell me this home was connected to electricity but not gas. at this point they are unsure where the fire started and if it was electrical in nature. crews are still watering down the roof around six hours after they first arrived again because of those layers of roofing, there are still smoldering embers underneath. i'm told the fire investigators expected this morning -- a fire investigate expected this morning now that it is daylight and we are going to learn what sparked the fire. back out here live fire crews continuing to knock down the hot spots and taking out the drenched building materials from outside of that house. there's nice tools in the garage, so quite a bit of damage out here this morning. live in san mateo, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. the fbi is investigating two letters containing the deadly poison ricin that were mailed to new york mayor michael bloomberg. one letter was opened at a screening facility in manhattan. the other was opened at an office used by the group mayors

against illegal guns which was started by bloomberg. police say the letters reference bloomberg's gun control efforts. now, the mayor says he is not threatened by the letters. several people who came in contact with them are being treated for mild symptoms. the state will decide by july 10th whether the new bay bridge will open on labor day weekend. delays include ordering and making replacements for the 32 bolts that snapped while they were being installed. if construction crews need more time, the opening date of the new bridge could conceivably be pushed back until next year. caltrans has been criticized for many problems lately and governor brown has ordered a review of the agency saying that he is trying to make it a better department. a group of lowell high school students are leaving monday for a trip to italy that almost didn't happen. now, since their freshman year, the 23 students have been working with the east coast company european institute to set up a 17 day italian tour. the cost of that trip, $5000 each. but a couple of weeks ago they

were suddenly unable to reach the company or get their money back. now, a different company, world strides is covering the cost of the trip. parents are planning legal action against the european institute. later today, a bay area teenager will be competing in the semifinal round of the national spelling bee. >> prosciutto, p-r-o-s-c-i-u-t p-r-o-s-c-i-u-t-t-o. prosciutto . turnoff. we also have slowing on nearby interstate 880 heading south out of milpitas towards san jose out of fremont, i should say. also look at the bay bridge it's tough to see but it's backed up for a big delay because of dentn the bridge. now, i thought at first it was just a stalled motorcycle but it turns out that this motorcycle driver laid it down and now it looks like the fire department, i'm just reading this here, the fire department has all lanes temporarily blocked on the bridge. so this is turning into what i thought was not going to be major, into a major delay. i hate to say it but the bay bridge, we are going to see delays that are going to last for a while. remember there's a giants game today, giants and the as at 12:45 and the backup is growing. if you want to get to that game today, i suggest using public transportation. move along and take a look at 580 westbound slow out of the altamonte pass into -- because of a motorcycle crash.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 ktvu channel 2 morning news. live look at the big board, dow up 76 points and the nasdaq and s&p 500 also posting some gains right now. we talked about it earlier, costco beating the streets, krispy kreme reports after the close later this afternoon so we will keep watching those stocks. time now is 6:55 and charges could be filed today against a driver accused in a deadly memorial day crash that took the lives of three people. 25-year-old paul diaz was due to be arraigned yesterday but prosecutors delayed the hearing because they are still waiting for toxicology tests. now, witnesses told police that diaz maersk going as fast as 75 miles per hour when he crashed on hillside boulevard and sheared his car in half. all three of his passengers died including his fiancie. investigators say diaz ran from the scene but turned himself in a few hours later.

a federal judge has ruled a brutality lawsuit against the san francisco sheriff's department can move forward. ktvu news was the first to show you a video of the incident at the hall of justice in 2011. daryl hunter says he suffered a concussion and other injuries when several deputies punched and kicked him after his arrest. hunter says he didn't do anything to provoke the attack. this afternoon petaluma will unveil a replacement for a vandalized memorial in a downtown park. the vietnam memorial bronze plaque honored the memory of the 16 men from petaluma who died while serving in vietnam. it was stolen from walnut park last january. generous donors made it possible to replace that plaque with a similar design but one that is bigger and more elaborate than the original. the dedication ceremony taking place at 2:00 this afternoon. palo alto police advising people not to be alarmed if you see some smoke today. a prescribed burn is being held on paige mill road and interstate 280 to skyline boulevard. firefighters say it's necessary to cut down on the risk of
