sante drives near the school. janine de la vega is there with new details from the victim's relatives. >> reporter: tori, police are still here on the scene and been here since 5:30 in the morning, right across the street from a elementary school and investigators are trying to find clues to help them find who killed a young man apparently on his way to work. police saturated this neighborhood keeping onlookers far away from the body on the ground. israel hernandez, says this was the spot where he would pick up his nephew, but today instead he found police investigating a shooting and feared the worst. >> i came over here and i just can't find him and i been calling his phone and he not answer the phone so i am still waiting for police to say that -- that is him up there. >> officers say they received 911 calls at 5:20 this morning of gunshots in the neighborhood and found a latino man face down on the ground with one

gunshot wound. detectives interviews neighbors to see if they heard anything or saw a person or car leaving the scene. they spent hours gathering evidence which prompted the principal of sante school to cancel classes. they sent out a message to parents but some didn't get it and still showed up shocked to find out about the killing. neighbors were also shake in. >> we always heard stuff and seen stuff but it seems like it is getting closer and closer. it is scary. >> officers took him aside and showed him picture and he confirmed it was his nephew, he says he was a janitor and moved into an apartment there a month ago and trying to make a better life for himself. this comes on the heels of a crime meeting held last night between the police and the community. there has been concern over rising crime, including three homicides last weekend. they were running from call to call when they responded to this. >> this is the 4th shooting of the night, fortunately for us the only fatality but several

houses and cars struck earlier in the other drive-by shootings. >> it is unknown what the motive is or if it is gang related, hernandez says his nephew was not in a gang but recently started hanging out with a new group of friends, no suspects are in custody. ja lyn de la vega, ktvu champ 2news. >> thank you. police held their annual ceremony to remember officers killed in the line of duty. that is part of the code honored not only by every peace officer but also by every spouse, significant other, parent, child and siblings. >> in the united states more than 15,000 officers have died in the line of duty since the first death was recorded in 1792. a marijuana grow operation went up in smoke in the east bay and it was a surprise find for firefighters. it happened at a warehouse on 51st avenue in oakland, tara moriarty joins us live from the scene to explain how the fire started and video of the marijuana you will see only on 2. >> reporter: police had this warehouse boarded up with the marijuana plants still inside but as you can see behind me here the plywood has been removed and neighbors tell us after the police and news crews left, two latino men broke into the building and stole the plants. this is video of 70 mature plants firefighters stumbled upon when they arrived. but someone had been there just

before crews got there. >> there was a fire extinguisher on the floor so it looked like someone tried to extinguish the fire prior to our arrival. >> heavy fire was coming there this morning. >> we had high-voltage and numerous wires from the ceiling so it wasn't safe so we pulled everyone out and waited for the arrival of pg&e to cut the wires. >> they say the growers were using an auto repair shop as a front and stealing power for their grow operations. >> there is numerous lights, there is numerous generators and what is unusual is there is wires hanging from everywhere. looks like in the back there was a car repair shop. >> no one was hurt in the fire. if you are wondering why police didn't confiscate the plants they said they needed to check to make sure it was illegal but neighbors say it is too late

anyway. investigators say the illegal wiring is what sparked the fire. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. a busy morning for oakland firefighters, also called out to battle a fire at an auto repair shop. crews responded at 8:15 a.m. to a report of heavy smoke fromming from the julio and sons transmissions on international boulevard. firefighters cut their way into the building through security gates but pulled back and went defensive after flames began shooting from the roof. the cause is under investigation. however a chief at the scene says the fire started while an employee was working on a car that caught fire. he was able to get out safely. no injuries were reported. a peninsula home was damaged in a fire. coming up what investigators say made the fire more dangerous for firefighters trying to put it out. the secret service says a letter sent to president obama may have been tainted with the

deadly poison ricin. the white house screening facility detected it and sent it to the fbi. it was post marked shreveport, louisiana, the same post mark on letters sent to michael bloomberg and his gun control group recently. some new funding will help 280 homeless veterans get off the streets. more than 3 million dollars will go to 6 bay area housing agencies in the form of housing vouchers with the vouchers veterans pay 30% of their income toward register housing and the government makes up the difference. they also provide support services and case management. >> one of the most troubled neighborhoods have a message for police. find out what they want to say. >> it is going to warm up, steve will be here with the details for your neighborhood. plus you may have seen the

motorcycle crash that was reported just before 6:30. chp says the motorcyclist lost control and fell off his bike in the fast lane near treasure island, that rider was injured but no other cars were involved, the back up made a mess of the commute for the rest of the morning. the state will decide by july 10th whether the the bay bridge will open on labor day weekend, the delays include ordering and making replacements for the bolts that snapped while being installed. if they need more time the opening date could be pushed back into the new year. cal trans has been criticized for many of the problems and governor jerry browne has ordered a review of the agency saying he is trying to make it a better department. neighbors from one of the most troubled communities say they are fed up with crime and took their safety concerns to the top. sal castaneda is live in san francisco with the invitation

the group extended to the chief of police. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori, residents of the tenderloin came straight to police headquarters saying they want better policing in their neighborhood. today about two dozen activists and tenderloin residents holding signs gathered on the steps of the hall of justice stating they wanted to bring a message to the chief of police. more than 1500 people signed a petition asking for police chief craig sur to visit the neighborhood, activists say when he does that he will see they need more officers. today he wasn't in his office but they delivered a petition saying they will welcome the chief at any time. >> i would like him to come and tour the neighborhood. come and see what we are talking about instead of just looking at numbers or hearing us talk, come see what we are talking about. >> brenda washington lives at the jefferson hotel. she says the neighborhood has

suffered police cutbacks more than any other. activists say in 2009 there were 101 officers patrolling the tenderloin, now there are only 69, a drop of 32%. they say that drop has led to an increase in crime, which is not fair to the people who live here. >> just because they live here in the tenderloin don't mean everybody is on drugs, doesn't mean everybody is poor, doesn't mean everybody don't have an education, don't mean everybody don't work. >> police say the numbers are not accurate because it doesn't take into account the foot patrol officers on market street, which are assigned out of a different station and say it has suffered fewer cutbacks than others. they said chief craig sur did go to the tenderloin yesterday and also said the chief is committed to restaffing or redoing the staffing at all the police stations soon. live in san francisco, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, sal.

oakland police say they arrested a man this morning for selling crack cocaine out of his apartment. officers say have gotten complaints about people coming and going and began a narcotics investigation. this morning they served the search warrant and say they found crack cocaine packaging materials and scales, police say the nail salon had nothing to do with the crack bust but it was good cover for the dealer. >> it doesn't really skyline himself and kind of blends in with everything else going on, unfortunately for him there was a lot of foot traffic and people coming and going from this location so it is the reason why we were receiving complaints. >> police did not release any details about the man they took into custody, waiting for the district attorney to file charges, san jose mayor chiewk reid says silicon valley schools have to do a better job of bridging the achievement gap. a new report shows 20% of

students there qualify for state universities. and just 22% of african american students qualify, compared to 53% of white students and 71% of asian students. yesterday mayor reid called the numbers dismal but also recognized the 10 schools were latino students improved and said other schools should followtheir lead. we have more information today about a hit-and-run accident in hayward involving an eight-year-old boy. it happened after 8:00 last night when the boy was in a crosswalk there. this morning police told ktvu the 18-year-old female driver called and turned herself in 20 minutes after the collision. the driver is not facing charges, witnesses and the driver say she had the green light and the boy ran into the crosswalk. he is recovering at oakland children's hospital. the berkeley city council is discussing a ban on smoking in the city's apartments and

group housing arrangements. one proposal would ban smoking in multiunit housing. that includes apartments, senior living facilities, fraternities and sororities. residents who expose their neighbors to spoke who face fines up to 250 dollars, the city is working out more details. investigators are looking into what sparked a house fire on the peninsula. it started before 1:00 a.m. on view ridge drive in san mateo. no one was home when the fire started. the homeowner says the house was vacant because it is being remodeled. building materials made it more dangerous for firefighters to fight the fire. >> what made it difficult for firefighters, we kept them off because the entire structure supporting the roof was burning. >> an estimate of the damage is not yet known and the cause is under investigation. according to governor

browne's new estimates his plan to overall the water system will cost 25 billion dollars. most of that money would fund w the sacramento river delta. the rest would pay for eco system restoration projects, the majority of the plan will be covered by water user rates, the rest would come from taxpayers. the drake's bay oyster company has cut ties with the non-profit group that was providing it with legal help. the split came after the report by the struggle to stay open in. the federal lease expired last year and the interior department ordered the company to shut down. a court ruling to halt that closure is expected in a few weeks. mechanics who maintain the rides at the 6 flags amusement park in vallejo are back on the strike, they say the company

locked them out after they were unable to agree on a contract. they say they are concerned about provisions in the proposal that would keep them from receiving overtime pay. the company says it has brought in mechanics from other amusement parks, the two sides are scheduled for meet with a mediator on june 5th. we got our first look today at a baby giraffe in her habitat at the san francisco zoo. the calf was born last week at 5'10," 130 pounds, that is average for her species, the as yet unnamed baby girl was out and about with her mother kristin, animal keepers say the new baby is having positive interaction with the adult giraffe group and say she has a lot of spunk. >> she is right where she needs to be and her attitude, behavior is everywhere -- is right where we want it to be. it has been a few years since we had a calf and we are

stocks bouncing back from yesterday's declines as weaker than expected economic data is actually keeping afloat the belief that stimulus measures by central banks will continue, so a live look the big board is up 67, the nasdaq up 32, s & p up 10. among the disappointing news out this morning 354,000 americans filed for jobless benefits for the first time last week, that is up 10,000 from the week before. and it is a bigger increase than most economists had forecast. but it is still a sign of modest but steady hiring. juice maker is closing its half moon bay headquarters for good. their parent company coca cola is shutting the facility as part of its realignment efforts, it was purchased by

coca cola 12 years ago and says operations will be relocated to the county where their main production facility is located. about 30 people at the half moon bay office will be affected. according to cock coca cola, most will lose their jobs. tesla motors announced they are expanding. they plan to triple that number by the end of june there. tesla says travelers will be able to drive for about three hours and take a 30 minute break to charge and then get back on the road. today on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 we told you earlier about the deadly shooting in san jose. this is the 4th killing since sunday. and it comes right after a public safety meeting. we are going beyond the crime tape and looking into the
