circumstances teenagers face. >> reporter: you would never know by the celebration of this college prep school that the city is in the middle of a crime emergency. and that in just a few hours a city curfew is going into effect. >> some people like it. some people don't. some people don't know why it's happening. >> reporter: tonight additional police are on patrol looking for juveniles out after 11:00 p.m. >> we don't really need anybody under the age of 18 out on the streets at night. >> reporter: the most recent sunday when 18-year-old jose luis quinonez was killed while sitting in a car with friends. the violence appears to be surrounding one gang. >> today we caught nine

it's called the power line fire. 250 people in the community of green valley were evacuated but they are expected to return to their homes right about now. since the flames are burning near high tension lines, fire officials say they are placing crews along the line. fire crews say they do plan to stay in that area tonight watching for any possible flairs up. firefighters in san jose made quick work of the grass fire on kelly park. in less than 20 minutes crews had it knocked down. the fire burned about 2 acres, several homeless people tried to put it out but it proved to be a little too much for them. warm weather and windy conditions are fueling all of

used by pedestrians until then. deborah villalon is live to tell us where this brush with the law will end. >> reporter: you can still see the mark on the pavement. here's the road crosswalk stretches across four lanes of traffic. here for a few months. >> i'll use these access all day long. >> reporter: and many people welcomed it. because just one crosswalk here across sonoma boulevard was easy for drivers to overlook and look through it. today police came to that blue house tipped off by a citizen. and the freelance painter is no more. >> it's over $1,000 which makes it a felony.

a legitimate crosswalk. caltrans plans to repave and paint this area to erase any remnants. new at 10:00, oakland animal services are calls or is calling on the public to find whoever injured a female pet. we have to warn you these are gruesome pictures. they medicated the animal for pain but described her condition as terminal. >> bones actually protruding through skin because there's just no muscle. there's no tissue. there's nothing left. this dog was allowed to rot in the backyard and suffer for a long long time. >> reporter: and take a look at this, this surveillance video shows a man delivering the dog to the shelter around midnight last night inside a plastic crate with no food or water.

the dog had a chain wound tightly around its neck as well as a harness that cut into her fur. shelter officials say they hope a neighbor will call so they can in their word get some justice for the animal which has been put down. a court ruling today put california's death penalty on hold for the forseing future. a state appeals court rejected the state's biggest attempt for legal injection. now california specially has to go back to the drawing board. no one has been executed in california for seven years. there are currently 725 inmates in death row. more than a thousand of them had appeals and will now be eligible for execution. now questions about overcrowding in county jails. many sheriffs are being forced to assume the role of being

judges and it has who will remain in jail. firefighters in oakland say they discovered an indoor marijuana growing operation this morning. but neighbors tell us someone stole the plants as soon as authorities the scenes. eric rasmussen asked why the pot was left behind. >> reporter: this is what firefighters responded to. 65 to 70 mature marijuana plants. now they're gone. >> who did the pot belong to? >> i don't know. i have no idea. >> reporter: thieves broke into the building on 51st avenue and stole the marijuana after police cleared the scene without removing the plant, says this man. >> i think it's a shame that the city of oakland after an emergency let people be vulnerable like that. wide open to be picked clean. >> reporter: the man who said she's a mechanic here returned to board up the building again

after someone removed the plywood police removed from over the door way. neighbors say someone broke into the property. >> do you think they should take the pot? >> of course, if they have something legally they should take it. >> reporter: police say they couldn't seize is marijuana because they didn't if it was illegal or being used for medicinal purposes. this morning, witnesses did not think they were dealing with a legal operation. they say leaving the plants behind made this place a target. >> there's people who just sit on stand by and wait on the internet and on the newscast for stories just like this. >> reporter: police say they never received a report about a break-in this morning. they tried to talk the owner, the people we talked to on the property said the owner is out of town. mario kioto held a

a prbus rvice launched in san francisco this week that following the same route as a popular munni bus rout. the new competition offers a less crowded ride but at a premium price. jana katsuyama is live in the city where she talked to the founder and also went along for a ride, jana. >> reporter: this bus rout goes along the same rout as munni's 30x. instead of cash you pay with an

iphone app. on munni's busiest ride, riders say buses are often overpacked during commute hours. >> they're full to the rim so they don't pick anybody else so they just keep going. sometimes you get passed by two or three buses before you get picked up. >> reporter: this week a start up company started service. >> san francisco has been growing allot and munni is just kind of overcapacity in a lot of commuter routs. kyle kirchhoff started the start up with friends. the bus offers leather seats and wifi for $6. the shuttle launched this week. the private shuttle uses munni bus stops and critics say that's unfair. >> munni has a priority and they should have a priority so

digging one of two tunnels for munni's two new highways. the boring is called dr. chung. a sister machine called big that will dig thenorthbound tunnel. an accident snarled traffic on interstate 80 for hours. the crash happened in vacaville at 7:00. the toyota flipped over and was hit by another car. the chp still has not releaseed the woman's identity but says she was from vacaville. the over drive was not hurt. police shut down three lanes creating back up. a judge upped the bail for a man suspected of driving a

car that crashed in culma earlier this week killing three passengers including his fiance. paul diaz unts of vehicle manslaughter. authorities say he was drunk at the time of that crash. police say the ford mustang crashed into the back of another car with such force it split the car in two. diaz is being charged with an enhancement for a prior dui. an officer is being called a hero. tom cob says he got the call that a 5 -month-old girl stopped breathing. when he got to the day care center he was flagged down by someone outside. and found a woman inside giving the baby cpr. >> i took over started doing chest compressions which is what we're thought to do.

i did that for 20 to 30 seconds then i heard the baby gasp. >> there's no word on why the infant stopped breathing but police say the day care center did just what they should have done and there is no criminal investigation. and best of all here we're told that little baby is just fine. the job market may be improving but young people are still finding stiff competition for summer jobs. as john fowler reports now, older workers are often vying for the same opportunities as teens. >> reporter: job counselors today tell me from retail to office work to even the trade, hiring is up. just not of young people. state officials report among young adults and teens unemployment nudges 25%. walnut creek student art barilko says he's been looking for a job for months. >> entry level. because i don't have the experience. there's so many people looking

for work that it's hard to get noticed. >> we have so many youth and adults competing for the same jobs, even at the fast food retail, sales associate positions. >> i'm looking for part time work to supplement social security income. >> reporter: dorothy ingram is a retired teacher with experience. she says she's picking from jobs offered to her over high school candidates. >> people from high school and college, but i have so many degrees it makes a difference on what i can find. >> reporter: 67% of retirees want at least part time work. persistence, confidence and community skills can at least get them in the door. john fowler, ktvu news. the man who founded znet in

san francisco and became a millionaire is now headed to bankruptcy court. miner has filed for bankruptcy. he says he has 50 to $100 million in liability and just 10 to $50 million in assets. minor sold znet for almost $2 billion. he was known for spending a lot of his money real estate venture and fine art. last year, ninor and his wife were named as california's top income tax delinquents. temperatures increased today. you probably felt it out there. we had 84. we're going to see temperatures tomorrow in the mid-80s, upper 80s to the upper 90s showing up adds well. forecast for tomorrow will be warmer. right now it's 70 in antioch. 63 in fairfield. sort of indicate that is tomorrow is going to be a bit warmer. no fog at the coast right now.

new apple store. as david stevenson told us, this now stands as progress. >> reporter: it has stood in union square for two years but this fountain earned by the hyatt hotel could be checking out thanks to apple. >> i think it's bad. because it's been here since i've lived here. i was like four. and it's beautiful. >> reporter: it was created by 87-year-old japanese american artist who's art career began in a world war ii internment camp. it makes san francisco an international icon. but apple's proposal to redesign the levy store leaves no room for this fountain. >> we feel the fountain should stay and be part of the city. >> reporter: it's not a simple matter to move the privately owned fountain. >> if you want it to become

a building. there were several children but the car fortunately missed everyone. it appears he suffered only minor injuries. a woman who was abandoned as a newborn in concord was reunited this week with the woman that found her. kara still had an umbilical cord when she was left in a woman's car. she began searching for her birth mother a few years ago but so far hasn't been able to relocate her. however, old newspaper articles relocated her to the woman who found her. she is still hoping to find her birth mother. >> there are always questions, what about my ethnic background. what about my medical history. i want to know in this particular case, that my birth mother who wrote this heart wrenching letter, i want to

we have late word tonight from the san jose police department about a new plan to add more officers to patrol constitutety this weekend to deal with a series of gang related injuries. a 19-year-old man was shot and killed near sante elementary school around 5:20 this morning. the family of felipe band era s says he was waiting for a ride to work and was not in a gang. but they also said he recently had a met new friends and had an encounter with a ominous groups. >> they were having around argument and my sister told me that one of the guys told him that he was going to get him.

miles across and that is about the distance from the first tower on the west span of the bay bridge all the way in to the city. >> that's pretty big. >> that's pretty big. >> reporter: david clinton says he follows news about close fly byes and he's not alone ever since that meteor crash in russia forced many injuries. but that meteor was tiny compared to the q2 asteroid which for the time is harmless. >> there's no risk of it hitting us there's for the next few years. >> reporter: people can view the asteroid tomorrow on shelley. see that moving white speck that's a moon. it's discovery announced just today. >> so it's like a tiny version of the earth system passing right through our neighborhood.

up again on saturday. by saturday these temperatures are in the mid-90s and upper 90s. so today was sunny and warmer obviously. there's a little patchy fog showing up in places. high pressure keeps that away. winds kind of go offshore. fire danger comes up so it's friday and saturday will be the warmest days of the week. forecast highs for friday. 90 in clear lake. 80 in san helena. 89 in napa. and 90s right throughout the east bay. air quality is going to start to take a hit. fire danger comes up. temperatures come up. as you suffer you will notice it a little bit too. grass pollens are coming up and the wind and the warmer temperatures. 82 in cupertino and there you go. just a warmer day. it's going to be beautiful, saturday is going to be hot. sunday the fog wants to come back and slightly cooler. there's your five day forecast with your bay area weekend clearly in view because for a lot of folks it's here.
